Charles Randolph Butler Jr. is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. He joined the court in 1988 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.

Early life and education

A native of New York, New York, Butler earned his bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University in 1962 and his LL.B. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1966.[1]

Military service

From 1962 to 1964, Butler served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.[1]

Butler was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on April 28, 1988, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama vacated by Judge Emmett Cox. Hearings on Butler's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 29, 1988, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on October 5, 1988. Butler was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on October 14, 1988, and he received his commission on October 17, 1988. From 1994 to 2003, Butler served as the chief judge of the district court. He elected to take senior status beginning on March 28, 2005. Butler was succeeded in this position by Judge Kristi DuBose.[1][2]
