Andrew Jay Kleinfeld is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Prior to his service on the Ninth Circuit, he was a district judge on the United States District Court for the District of Alaska from 1986 to 1991.[1]
Early life and education
Born in New York, New York, Kleinfeld graduated from Wesleyan University with his bachelor's degree in 1966, and from Harvard Law School with his J.D. in 1969.[1]

Kleinfeld was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit by President George H.W. Bush on May 23, 1991, to a seat vacated by Alfred Theodore Goodwin. The American Bar Association rated Kleinfeld Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on Kleinfeld's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on July 19, 1991, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on September 12, 1991. Kleinfeld was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on September 12, 1991, and he received his commission on September 16, 1991. Kleinfeld assumed senior status on June 12, 2010.[1][3] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Morgan Christen.
District of Alaska
Kleinfeld was nominated to United States District Court for the District of Alaska by President Ronald Reagan on March 26, 1986, to a new seat created by 98 Stat. 333. Hearings on Kleinfeld's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 23, 1986, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on May 8, 1986. Kleinfeld was confirmed on a voice vote of the Senate on May 14, 1986, and he received his commission on May 15, 1996. Kleinfeld resigned from the district court on October 7, 1991, upon his elevation to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1][4] Kleinfeld was succeeded in this position by Judge John Sedwick.
Kleinfeld served as a federal magistrate judge with the United States District Court for the District of Alaska from 1971 to 1974.[1]
