A.J. McNamara
A.J. McNamara was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. McNamara joined the court in June 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. McNamara served on senior status until he passed away on December 4, 2014.[1][2]
Education
McNamara graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1959 and later graduated from Loyola University-New Orleans School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1968. McNamara served on active duty in the US Navy from 1959 to 1962.[1]
Professional career
McNamara started his legal career as a bailiff and law clerk for former federal judge Herbert Christenberry in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana from 1966 to 1968. From 1968 till his appointment to the federal bench in 1982, McNamara was a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Louisiana. McNamara was an elected Republican Louisiana state representative from 1976 to 1980.[1]

McNamara was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on May 5, 1982, to a seat vacated by Edward Boyle as Boyle assumed senior status. McNamara was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 18, 1982, on a voice vote and received commission on June 21, 1982. McNamara served as a chief judge from 1999 to 2001 before assuming senior status on June 9, 2001.[1] McNamara was succeeded in this position by Jay Zainey. McNamara passed away on December 2, 2014.[2]
