Larry J. McKinney was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan and served as a senior federal judge from 2009 until his death in 2017. McKinney served as the district court's chief judge from 2001 to 2007.[1][2]

Early life and education

A native of South Bend, Indiana, McKinney graduated from MacMurray College with his bachelor's degree in 1966 and from Indiana University's Maurer School of Law with his J.D. in 1969.[1]

McKinney was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on May 5, 1987, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana vacated by William Steckler. Hearings on McKinney's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 18, 1987, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on July 9, 1987. McKinney was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on July 17, 1987, and he received his commission on July 20, 1987. McKinney served as the chief judge of the Southern District of Indiana from 2001 to 2007. He elected to take senior status beginning on July 4, 2009, and served as a senior federal judge until his death on September 20, 2017. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson.[1][2][3]
