Richard J. Arcara is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of New York. He joined the court in 1988 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Arcara served as the district court's chief judge from 2003 to 2010.

Early life and education

A native of Buffalo, New York, Arcara graduated from St. Bonaventure University with his bachelor's degree in 1962 and from Villanova University School of Law with his J.D. in 1965.[1]

Military service

Arcara served as a captain in the U.S. Army's military police corps from 1966 to 1967.[1]

Arcara was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on August 7, 1987, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of New York vacated by Judge John Elfvin. Hearings on Arcara's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 27, 1988, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on February 4, 1988. Arcara was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on February 19, 1988, and he received his commission on February 22, 1988. From 2003 to 2010, Arcara served as the chief judge of the district court. He elected to take senior status beginning on January 3, 2015. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Lawrence Joseph Vilardo.[1][2]
