Raised in Yorktown, Matt is a graduate of Yorktown High School and was first elected Supervisor of the Town of Yorktown in 2019 and reelected in 2021. He graduated from St. Anselm College in 2008 and received an MPA from Marist College in 2010.

As Town Supervisor, Matt Slater balanced Yorktown’s budget through spending cuts and economic growth and cut town taxes for the first time in three decades – even cutting town taxes two out of three years as town supervisor. Slater’s economic development plan was hailed as a model for the rest of the state by the Business Council of Westchester County and it helped attract major investments by Trader Joe’s, Uncle Giuseppe’s, and several other transformative projects throughout Yorktown’s five hamlets.

Prior to his election as Yorktown Town Supervisor, Matt served as Chief of Staff to former state Sen. Terrence Murphy for four years. In that role, he partnered with Sen. Murphy to enact dozens of local and statewide laws. He secured millions of dollars in state funding for area projects and led local relief efforts for the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Maria.

In 2022 Matt received a Presidential Direct Commission as an officer in the United States Navy Reserves and is currently assigned to Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 8 based in Lakehurst, NJ.

  • Tackling New York's affordability crisis to keep people and businesses in New York.
  • Prioitizing public safety to keep our families and communities safe.
  • Protecting taxpayers by demanding greater oversight of New York's bloated spending.

Areas of public policy I am personally passionate about include fiscal accountability, making childcare more affordable and available and protecing the Hudson Valley's natural resources.

My frst job was at Yogi's Steakhouse in Yorktown where I bused tables from the 8th grade through High Shcool. This was a great experience that taught me how to interact with people.

The greatest challenge facing New York State is the structural deficit from increasing state spending by billions of dollars in recent years. The Financial Plan for the 2024 budget projects a $2.3B deficit next fiscal year which will grow to $4.3B in 2027 and $7.3B in 2028. This is unsustainable and only further threatens New York taxpayers who already lead the nation in tax burden.

Experience is important and I appreciate the different perspectives that people bring to a conversation. However, when dealing with a state government like New York's I do believe governmental experience is crucial to properly understanding how the government operates in order to properly assist constituents and partner with local governments. Having worked in the state legislature for several years, as well as serving as Yorktown Town Supervisor, I bring a high level of governmental experience that benefits my constituents and the communities I represent.

Building relationships with other legislators on both sdies of the aisle is crucial. People are tired of the partisan politics that has broken our federal government. We need problem solvers and people willing to build consensus on important issues which is exactly what I have done in Albany. Most recently, working with Assemblymembers Amy Paulin, Mike Reilly and Mike Tannousis we unaimously passed the Detective Brian Simonson Law to crack down on cell phone thefts and the black market.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in New York

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
