Expand all | Collapse all

I am a community organizer and a fierce advocate for racial, immigrant and gender justice. I am an activist with a proven track record of standing up and speaking out against injustices. I've approached coalition building from the grassroots. I was on the founding board of NICE (New Immigrant Community Empowerment), a Jackson Heights-based organization, which fights for workers and immigrant rights. To expand participation in local government, I helped found the progressive New Visions Democratic Club. In 2002, I successfully defeated the party-backed candidate to become the first Latina to represent our community on the Democratic Party's State Committee. And for the past 13 years, I have served as the leader of a social justice organization dedicated to building Latina power to advance gender justice, becoming a nationally recognized advocate for universal health care and reproductive freedom.

  • I am running to make the New York Health Act (a state version of Medicare for All) a reality, to ensure everyone has access to healthcare, regardless of income, employment, or immigration status. The outbreak of the Coronavirus has tragically exposed how vulnerable New Yorkers are because we lack universal, high quality healthcare for everyone.
  • I am running to protect our immigrant communities. I will fight for relief for immigrants excluded from federal aid, and to make New York a true sanctuary state. The 34th Assembly District is 62% immigrant, including many that are undocumented. The coronavirus pandemic has left out immigrant communities in crisis, and we need the state to step in where the Trump Administration is failing us.
  • I am running to prioritize education justice by ensuring our vastly underfunded public schools receive the money they are owed, and fighting to make CUNY tuition free again.

I have worked in the fields of reproductive and immigrant justice, disability rights, early childhood education, higher education, and veteran's health. I have always approached my work from an intersectional lens, meaning these issues cannot be separated from each other. In order to achieve racial and immigrant justice, we must fight for access to education, universal healthcare, free and accessible transportation, housing for all, criminal justice reform, and more. If elected, I will fight for policies that benefit our immigrant communities, working class families and communities of color.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in New York

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
