Saturn (Japanese: サターン Saturn) is one of Team Galactic's four Commanders.

In the core series games

Saturn is first seen leading the efforts of Team Galactic at Lake Valor near Pastoria City. He battles the player inside Azelf's cave and reveals that Mars is at Lake Verity. He is later encountered again in the Team Galactic HQ, overseeing the imprisoned lake guardians while the Red Chain is being created. After being defeated again, he allows the player to free the lake guardians.

After the events at the Spear Pillar, Saturn can be found in the Galactic Veilstone Building, contemplating what direction to take Team Galactic after Cyrus disappeared. He was never aware of Cyrus's grander plot and claims to have learned that "extremism is never the solution".

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Saturn can be found at fought at the Battle Tower during the post-game.

Pokémon the Series

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

Saturn debuted in a cameo at the end of A Secret Sphere of Influence!. He, along with some Team Galactic Grunts, commented that Jessie, James, and Meowth did a lousy job at stealing the Adamant Orb for them, and framing Nando for the crime.

Saturn's first speaking appearance was in Journey to the Unown!, along with his Bronzor. He managed to steal a cube that was under the guard of the Unown of the Solaceon Ruins and brought it with him back to the Team Galactic HQ.

Later, in Enter Galactic!, Saturn exposed the cube to the meteorites in Veilstone City, transforming it into the Spear Key. He and a few Team Galactic Grunts went to go steal the meteorites, but ended up meeting Ash and his friends for the first time. He also battled Brock and his Croagunk with his own Toxicroak, which ended after Team Galactic made a tactical retreat.

In Losing Its Lustrous and Double Team Turnover!, Saturn stole the Adamant Orb while it was being transported to the Celestic Town Historical Research Center from Eterna City. He also aided in stealing the Lustrous Orb from the Celestic Town Historical Research Center but was admonished by Cyrus after the completion of the mission for displaying ineptitude.

In Saving the World From Ruins!, following the failure of Mars's Iron Island mission, Cyrus placed Saturn in charge of the Spear Pillar's excavation from Mount Coronet. He worked with Charon to locate ruins on Mount Coronet in Gateway to Ruin!. Team Galactic located some ruins, though not the ones they wanted. Saturn and the others then fled following the arrival of Looker and Ash's group. Later, Saturn returned to Mount Coronet and discovered the Spear Pillar ruins in Unlocking the Red Chain of Events!, allowing him to fast-track Team Galactic's scheme.

In The Needs of the Three!, Saturn kept Gary at bay while Pokémon Hunter J successfully captured the three lake guardians at Lake Valor. He later returned to Team Galactic HQ.

In The Battle Finale of Legend!, Saturn's Toxicroak was defeated by Brock's Croagunk. After Cyrus passed through the dimensional portal created by Dialga and Palkia he realized that Cyrus had just been using him and the other Commanders to reach his own goals and cared little for those who served him. When Mars hysterically attempted to follow their Leader, Saturn grabbed her arm to block her from doing so, shaking his head solemnly at his fellow Commander. Afterwards he was arrested along with Mars and Jupiter by Looker and stated that Team Galactic was finished.

He appeared briefly in Memories are Made of Bliss! in Team Rocket's fantasy with all the other members of Team Galactic.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Saturn reappeared in The Arceus Chronicles (Part 1) through The Arceus Chronicles (Part 4), leading Team Galactic in an attempt to bring back Cyrus. As the first step of the operation, he successfully caught a Heatran in order to power a device meant to open a gate to the world that Cyrus had disappeared into. The operation, however, experienced a setback when the energy cannon exploded and Heatran went on a rampage. Saturn and the other Commanders later faced Ash and his friends in order to stop them from interfering with them, but they were ultimately defeated and captured by Cynthia and later arrested by Officer Jenny, ending their plan in a failure.

Character

Saturn is determined to successfully complete all his missions and would order a tactical retreat to avoid further complications. As a result of this perfectionist quality of his personality, Saturn tended to call out his Toxicroak to handle interruptions like Ash and his friends.

History

Diamond & Pearl arc

Saturn's role in Team Galactic is to raise funds for their projects and he has the permission of Cyrus to use any means he feels necessary; however, he is very lazy and usually sends machines to do his dirty work for him. Saturn decided to kidnap Platinum for a ransom, as she is the daughter of the wealthiest family in Sinnoh; however, when his grunts couldn't find a picture of the child he settles on her bodyguards, Paka and Uji.

He eventually tracks them at the Lost Tower and challenges Paka and Uji to a battle with his Croagunk and Abra. Despite the power his Pokémon possess, they are both defeated by Paka and Uji's skills. Angered by his loss, Saturn throws a temper tantrum and has the grunts seal Route 210 which will force them to stop at Veilstone, where their base is located. He is approached by Mars and after a brief argument about her stepping into his room without permission; she transfers energy to the Galactic Bomb.

He is later seen at Veilstone where he sets his revenge plan into action which he starts by having the grunts attack Paka and Uji in the darkness of night. After waiting a long time for Paka and Uji to be defeated by the grunts; Saturn's patience wears thin and he pulls out a mysterious machine to use on them. When the grunts finally lure them into firing range Saturn activates the machine; it fires a beam at Paka and Uji which sends them into an unknown dimension where they will stay for all eternity. Having become bored now that he has won; Saturn decides to play video games until Cyrus enters the room and punishes him for using the machine without permission by pinching his arm.

Saturn later appears at Lake Valor after a period of absence where he plans on blowing up the lake so that he can capture the Legendary Pokémon Azelf. He encounters Pearl who has come to prevent Team Galactic from blowing up the lake. Saturn easily defeats Pearl and attempts to interrogate him but the countdown for the lakes explosion begins before he can get an answer.

Once the lake is blown up Saturn commands the Galactic Grunts to begin the capturing of Azelf. Despite the skills Azelf possesses and Pearl's determination, Saturn eventually ends up the victor and defeats Pearl with a Gunk Shot from his Octillery and successfully captures Azelf. He later arrives at the Team Galactic HQ along with his fellow Commanders Mars and Jupiter where they listen to a speech given by Cyrus; Saturn is seen clapping after he finishes.

He later appears at the Spear Pillar where he and his fellow Commanders, Mars and Jupiter await Cyrus's arrival so that he can activate the ritual that will summon Dialga and Palkia. Saturn is the most shocked of the three when he sees that Cyrus is heavily injured but still promises to let no one stop him from activating the ritual. He, Mars, and Jupiter are all attacked by the Gym Leaders Fantina, Roark, and Gardenia but despite their challengers neither Commander is afraid. As they battle the Gym Leaders, three more arrive to help them Crasher Wake, Maylene, and Candice along with Byron for support; Saturn battles Roark and Fantina while Mars and Jupiter battle the other four. Despite his powerful Pokémon, Saturn is eventually defeated and is trapped underneath a pile of rubble, humorously with his machines airbag crushing him.

Platinum arc

Later, Saturn and his teammates are discovered by another member of Team Galactic, Sird. Sird explains to them that she had infiltrated Team Rocket on a mission, but failed. Soon after, they are attacked by Riley of Iron Island, who had tracked Sird by her Aura. Sird battles Riley, allowing Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars to escape unharmed.

Later, Saturn and the other Commanders witness Charon battling Diamond and Pearl in Eterna City with Heatran and Giratina. Despite their irritation that Charon has revealed his true loyalties, they decide to ignore it so that they can enter the Distortion World and rescue Cyrus. After arriving, they find Charon there as well. He lies and tells them that he is searching for Cyrus too, but is being attacked by a group of people and asks for their help.

Saturn and the others comply, and they each face a different opponent in a one-on-one battle. Saturn faces Mira in battle, while Jupiter faces Marley, and Mars faces Cheryl. During the battle, Saturn is confused at Mira's battle strategy which has her make her Alakazam boost its defensive power in an attempt to make the battle longer.

The battle is interrupted by Giratina, who flies past them so that it can fight the other Legendary Pokémon in the area. After Charon is defeated, Saturn, his fellow Commanders, and Cyrus emerge from the Distortion World and into the real world. Charon tries to lie to Cyrus by claiming that he intended to gather the Legendary Pokémon for Team Galactic's sake. Cyrus reaches down to Charon, which Saturn and Mars think it means he's going to pinch him. However, Cyrus only takes his machine, and praises Charon for his technological genius. The records reveal that he has been using it since the battle on the Spear Pillar, which angers Saturn into figuring out that he was attempting to use the machine to control Dialga and Palkia into opening a hole to the Distortion World, to which Charon denies.

Cyrus speaks to his four Commanders once more and reveals that he is disbanding Team Galactic, which angers Jupiter because she, Saturn, and Mars will have nowhere else to go without him. Hearing her wishes, Cyrus takes Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter away with him and thanks Diamond, Pearl, Platinum for their help.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!

Saturn in the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! manga

Saturn first appeared in the ruins of Celestic Town along with Jupiter and Cyrus. He battled Mitsumi while Hareta pursued his leader.

Just like in the games, Saturn was assigned to Lake Valor to capture Azelf. At the lake, Hareta and Saturn battled; Saturn initially had the upper hand using his Gallade but Hareta was able to turn the tide. After both his Gallade and Rhyperior were defeated, Saturn was fired from Team Galactic by Cyrus, but earned a second chance by using a Revive on Rhyperior so Cyrus's Gyarados would not lose to Hareta.

After the events at the Spear Pillar, Saturn appeared to have joined the newly formed Neo Team Galactic and its leader, Charon. He reappeared at Canalave Library in an attempt to exact revenge on Hareta, but failed, and promised to attack again at the Galactic Veilstone Building. However, there he revealed he was actually a double agent and still loyal to Cyrus, whom he helped Mitsumi and the other Galactic members free.

Pokémon

Toxicroak
Saturn's Toxicroak
Main article: Saturn's Toxicroak

Toxicroak is Saturn's main Pokémon. It was mostly used to make sure that Hareta didn't interfere with Team Galactic.

Bronzong
Saturn's Bronzong

Bronzong is another Pokémon on Saturn's team. It went up against Byron's Bastiodon and tried to stop Bastiodon's every movement. As a result, it was able to defeat Byron and caused a cave-in with Earthquake. While Bronzong was battling Hareta's Piplup and Riolu, it was defeated by Riolu's Focus Punch.

Bronzong's known moves are Solar Beam, Gyro Ball, Reflect and Earthquake.

Gallade
Saturn's Gallade

Gallade was called out after Bronzong was defeated. Gallade was shown to be very powerful as he was able to take out Hareta's Onix in one hit with Leaf Blade. His next opponent was a Misdreavus, in which the Screech Pokémon helped him activate the Steadfast Ability, causing him to be much faster than ever before. However, despite the boost, it fell to Misdreavus's Shadow Ball after Hareta ran up the hill and sped down using a bike, which in the process, the bike was destroyed. Hareta than congratulated Gallade for a job well done which angered Saturn.

Gallade's known moves are Fury Cutter and Leaf Blade and his Ability is Steadfast.

Rhyperior
Saturn's Rhyperior

Rhyperior was used to battle Hareta after Gallade was taken out. It was proven to be a tough opponent as it weakened Piplup while Toxicroak weakened Luxio. Later, it was hit by Geodude as it emerged from the ground and taken out by multiple Magikarp. Later, while Hareta was battling Cyrus's Gyarados, Saturn gave Rhyperior a Revive. Due to Piplup's Torrent, Rhyperior was swallowed by Piplup's Surf.

None of Rhyperior's moves are known and its Ability is Lightningrod.

Golbat
Saturn's Golbat

Saturn used Golbat to fly away along with Jupiter's Golbat.

None of Golbat's moves are known.

Magmortar
Saturn's Magmortar

Saturn sends out his Magmortar to fight against Hareta's Empoleon and Minun. It was finished off with a Surf attack from Empoleon while Saturn was paralyzed from Minun's Thunder Wave.

Trivia

  • Saturn bears a striking resemblance to Coin. However, any relationship between them, if any, is unknown.
  • Saturn was incorrectly referred to as female on multiple occasions outside of the games. He was identified as female in one mistranslated chapter of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! and then again on Pokémon Sunday. The confusion is also furthered by his feminine Japanese voice.
    • It should also be noted that Saturn is one of the few Trainers in the main series games not encountered in the Battle Frontier to have a Pokémon with a 50-50 chance of being male or female to be the opposite gender as himself, along with Bugsy, Will, Janine (Generation II) and Grimsley. Notably, Bugsy has also been mistaken for a girl.
  • Saturn is the only Team Galactic Commander whose Spanish name wasn't changed to correspond to a different planet; Jupiter's and Mars's names were changed to correspond to planets with names of Roman goddesses (Ceres and Venus, respectively).
    • However, Ceres is a dwarf planet, like Pluto (from which Charon's Japanese name was taken).
  • Saturn is the lieutenant Commander of Team Galactic, meaning he is of a higher rank than Jupiter and Mars and his immediate superior is the Galactic Boss, Cyrus, which would explain why after Cyrus disappeared, the remaining Team Galactic members followed under the command of Saturn. This is ironic, since he is the only Commander who was not told Team Galactic's true goals.
  • Saturn is the Commander the player will battle the least in Platinum, aside from Charon, who doesn't battle the player at any point in the game.
  • In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, when Saturn battles alongside Jupiter in the Battle Tower, he uses exclusively Dark-type Pokémon, while Jupiter uses exclusively Poison-type Pokémon.
