Limited mobility visit to NYC March 7-9

United Healthcare Clawing Back Payments
United Healthcare sent a notice to me that they miscalculated payments and are clawing back payments. They say I now owe about ~$2,600. United Healthcare owns OptumBank and they just charged my Health Savings Account (HSA) this amount putting my HSA substantially in the negative. All of the payments and claims were prior to July 2024 (beyond the 6 month limit they usually impose on their members for claims). [more inside]
Cannabis use disorder - where to start
Someone close to me recently opened up about a very severe and long term cannabis use disorder. They’re recently sober and have asked for my help, though they doesn’t know exactly what they want or need. What are the steps for getting help for an addition and supporting someone who struggles with one? [more inside]
6 month bedbug issue in NYC apartment with a lapsed lease
TLDR: had bedbug treatments, lease lapsed, not sure they're gone but the landlord-hired exterminator won't hear it.
Is there a way to request a city canine inspection if I don't have a current lease? Will cashed checks/historical leases suffice? Other agencies to ask for help?
Is there a reputable inspector/exterminator to go to? I do not trust the one that was hired by the landlord. Can I deduct the treatment cost from my rent? An immediate move isn't really feasible, but my roommate and I have our eye on listings and have applied for housing lotteries. My ideal would be to find a way to rectify the situation and not be forced to move. [more inside]
NYC/NJ: Tour ideas like the Hop On/Hop Off Bus, but something else...
My grandma in her 90s loves going on all kinds of tours and cruises. Previously I've taken her on the Hop On Hop Off Bus in NYC and she loved it. I'm looking for other ideas in the NYC/NJ area for May-June. [more inside]
Illustrated story about essential NYC?
Came across it a few years ago ... it might have been Roz Chast, but maybe not. Anyway, it was a cartoon about 2 friends doing the most essential New York City things. The one I remember perfectly was having martinis at Bemelman's. Everything else is a blank, and I'd like to share it with a friend who'll be in the city next month? Any ideas? Thanks!
NYC hospital rec (just in case)
Planning a babymoon girls trip in early January for my pregnant 30 y.o. daughter, myself, and my 81 y.o. mom. We're all in good health, but I like to be mentally prepared in case of an emergency. If any of us needs to go to a hospital, which one should we go to / ask to be taken to? [more inside]
NYC to EWR on Thanksgiving
I'm catching an international flight out of Newark on Thanksgiving Day, departing in the early evening. What's the best way to get to the airport from Manhattan that day (I was going to take the train from Penn Station)? How much extra time should I give myself? Any advice for surviving the experience?

Recommended NYC lumberyard for bookshelf-building wood?
I'm considering building my own bookshelves per this design by Teresa Nielsen Hayden. She specifies board sizes and suggests, "go to a lumber yard that will cut wood to size and give them a list of how many boards you want in what sizes". I seek a lumber yard in or near New York City that will deal with me (a novice) fairly and communicate well. I'm happy to speak on the phone. I prefer to work with independent shops rather than national chains. I'd need them to deliver (I live in Western Queens).
Sleep come free me!
I'll be arriving at JFK at about 8AM after an absolutely HEINOUS 48 hours of air travel, but my hotel in Manhattan (W. 42nd St) doesn't allow check in until 1PM. Anybody have suggestions for someplace I can go lay down and sleep for a few hours?

How's the neighborhood around the Wilson Ave station in Bushwick?
We're two mid-30s transplants from the Bay Area and we saw a great apartment today a few blocks from the Wilson Ave station. We liked the neighborhood and the commute makes sense, but a lot of the info online is outdated or shitpost-y so I'm hoping MeFites might have tips. [more inside]

Restaurants with tea leaf tempura in NYC?
Is there anywhere in NYC where I can get tea leaf tempura? I had this dish while visiting a tea plantation in Japan, and I would like to try it again. Alternatively, is there somewhere in NYC where I could buy fresh tea leaves suitable for tempura? Thanks!

Not sure what to do about the AC that arrived yesterday
After going round and round I finally ordered a new air conditioner. Lowe's delivered it yesterday, depositing it in the entry hall of my 3-story building. I live on the 2nd floor. After they left, I noticed that the box has been opened. This seems less than optimal. [more inside]
Advice on AC size?
I'm in AC decision-making hell. I'm going to put a window AC in my small home office. I thought I'd found my ideal model, but it's a strange shape and turn's out it won't fit. So now I'm back to square one. The model I'm now leaning toward bc it's quiet is 8000 BTUs. That's the smallest it comes. But the room is maybe like 150 sqft, so is 8000 BTUs just too big? Are there reasons why having a too big AC is a bad idea?
Pet transportation options
There's a cat that I would really like to adopt, but unfortunately she's been relocated from a shelter in NYC (where I am) to a shelter in Kingston, New York (90 miles north). Are there options to transport her back home that I may be missing? [more inside]
Can you recommend a good watch repair place in NYC?
I have an old watch that crapped out about 10 years ago. As I recall, I took it to get a new battery and was surprised to find that a new battery didn't solve the problem, so I just cast it aside. Now I'd like to resuscitate it. I live in Park Slope, so local is good, but Manhattan is also fine. Good, reliable work and not too expensive are my criteria.

Dentists in Manhattan who are actual skilled medical professionals?
I've got MetLife PDP dental coverage through my new employer. This is probably a long shot, but does anyone have a recommendation for a participating dentist that you really like AND have built a long-term relationship with, including at least some sort of restoration work done that you are satisfied with? I'm in fairly good dental health but I have a bit of health anxiety and want to establish a relationship with a medical professional dentist in case I ever need a crown or root canal. Out-of-network dentist recs for Manhattan also welcome, since it seems kinda rare for dentists to accept insurance outside of the "dental spa" storefronts. Thanks!
Where can I find abundant seaweed in or near New York City?
For an art project, I'd like to look at and photograph a lot of seaweed, and take home a bit of it. Where can I find abundant seaweed washing up on the beach in June, in or near New York City? Ideally accessible by public transit, but it doesn't have to be.
Access to methadone today in Manhattan Or Bronx.
I’m looking for information about one-day access to methadone in NYC today. I’m helping someone whose usual methadone clinic closes at 2 pm. He’s looking for somewhere in Manhattan or the Bronx that can take a walk-in today after 2 pm for methadone. Anyone have any ideas?
Where can I buy eclipse glasses in NYC?
I thought I'd get my free glasses at Warby Parker or the library but after going to two stores and two library branches, I think I'm too late. There are a gazillion for sale on Amazon, but I worry they're not trustworthy. Do you know places that are selling trustworthy ones in the city? Please only rec places you know has them, because I already feel I've done the wild goose chase. Thanks.
online dating as an obese woman in NYC -- push through or give up?
[TW: weight and body issues]
I'm a 40-year-old "ethnic" obese woman living in NYC, single for ~7 years, and have started to date online this year. I'm struggling to meet suitable men despite being very successful in other areas of life and having very flexible criteria (swiping on other heavy people much larger than I am, short men, etc. from all walks of life). Those I have met have been unsuitable or inconsiderate to frankly awful and abusive people, many of whom have made a point of commenting on my fatness, mentioning that I'm not their "type" and other code for lack of attraction to my body. I'm wondering whether I should continue to subject myself to this or wait to jump back in once I've lost the weight? [more inside]
Low-key NYC gyms for the easily overstimulated?
Looking to get back to the gym, because I've tried a regular home-workout routine and it hasn't stuck. I was with Planet Fitness pre-pandemic and couldn't stand the bad, loud sound systems (I listen to my own music in earbuds or have decibel-reducing earplugs with me) and the TVs everywhere, and the vibe that felt catered to dopamine-starved 18-year-old boys. I just want to work out somewhere that's mellow and not roid-ragey and has a good variety of cardio/weight machines. Not that interested in classes at the moment. I'm in Queens along an LIRR line, so for the right place I'll travel into Penn Station/Grand Central.

Can you spare a share... for a hotel in Times Square?
Looking for hotel recs in Times Square for a spring break trip with my teenager. I haven't been to NYC since pre-pandemic. Not considering other areas for Reasons. Websites all look alike. Manhattan nap spot (free or museum admission)
I’m looking to get a quick catnap in sometime this afternoon in Manhattan, like 3-4pm. What would you suggest? Something that combines with something else (musuem, cool interior) that’s not the obvious tourist spots like the NYPL. Comfy, and not hassled by folks and can keep my bag and laptop secure.

Bathroom venting woes
My employer, a 501c3 non-profit in NYC with more than 500 employees, has failed to provide a working ventilation fan in my building's sole single stall bathroom. The bathroom is shared by 13 employees and is the only bathroom in our building. A functioning fan has been requested for several years without any response. What are the appropriate ways to handle this?
Please note: this is not a residential property; much of the information easily available online is for tenants of residential properties and doesn't apply in this situation.
Eating out for 20 in Queens

Overnight parking options outside of NYC
I'm planning a family trip from Ohio to Massachusetts with a stop over in NYC for a couple nights. We're going to get a hotel in Manhattan, but I don't want to take my car into the city. Tracking down Paxlovid in NYC
My partner has Covid and is feeling very sick. His doctor prescribed Paxlovid, but none of our regular pharmacies seem to have it in stock. Recently verified heated outdoor gathering spots in New York City
I'm seeking casual gathering places (pubs, cafés, etc.) that serve food and/or drink, and that have truly outdoor seating, and that are suitable for groups of 6-12, and that have some form of outdoor heating such as firepits or heat lamps. Please only recommend venues where you personally have empirically verified the existence of real outdoor seating, within the last month, with your own senses. A roof plus two walls is fine, three walls is possibly okay as long as there's a lot of airflow, four walls is not okay. [more inside]

NYC bagel delivery
For Christmas I'd like to gift NYC bagels to someone who lives in Manhattan but doesn't venture very far outside of her neighborhood (which is somewhere between Kips Bay and Murray Hill, according to Google Maps). Discovering a place within walking distance would be awesome, but mostly I want to find a solid bagel shop that does *local, fresh* delivery rather than packaging frozen bagels for shipping, if that's possible?
Oysters at Thanksgiving - advice on buying in NYC and keeping fresh
I'm contributing a few dozen oysters to the big meal this year. I've never actually kept oysters in the fridge though -- they've always been consumed immediately. Any advice on when to buy them and how to maximize freshness until shucking time? Should I wait until Thursday morning to buy them if at all possible? And any recommendations on where to get good ones at a reasonable price in NYC, assuming I won't have much time for shopping over the next couple days and would prefer an easy and reliable place to pick them up in Brooklyn?
