Long vacation apartment rental
How do I pay rent in Australia from a US bank account? Other AskMes have touched on issues people have had with US banks when traveling abroad for extended periods. Assuming I can manage this, I’m wondering how to pay rent since unlike most purchases I probably can’t put it on a credit card. Other than, say, getting a local friend to pay with money I supply.
Landlord's unrealistic cleaning demands and a couch held hostage.
Please advise on how to proceed proactively and cautiously to prevent conflict from what seems like retaliatory whims after landlord spent money removing mold.
I rent a furnished basement in a house with landlords. Unrelated to mold, they were replacing furniture and removed the couch to make space for a new one. After several days without a couch, I requested it be delivered. They said “no”; I cost them money due to unspecified “neglect.” My rent was increased 20% and insist I pay $1000 for FOUR professional deep cleanings because the place is messy. I'm feeling squeezed. Need advice on whether or not to move to new apartment with more space
I’m a 41-year-old living in Oakland, and I’m considering moving to a larger apartment in a building closer to my current one, but feeling uncertain about the decision. I’d really appreciate some outside perspectives since I don’t have anyone in my life I can ask for advice. [more inside]
An ask about... asking
It's about that time, y'all: I'm starting my apartment hunt in earnest. (AKA, The Almighty Mommy Goddess' dad gave a budget to get me the f out, because Reasons.)
What have you asked of people who are the gatekeepers of residences?
I know the big stuff - square footage, why is there carpeting in the kitchen, monthly utilities, etc.
What other questions I should be asking?
What are things that you wished you'd known about, sooner - the good, the bad, and the ugly?
Thank you!
Paying rent and getting credit for it?
In a new apartment and considering rent payment options. I could pay my rent by credit card, and there would be a 3% fee for doing so. The portal where I set up the rent payment also suggested I might want to report the rent payment to the credit agencies for a $6 per month fee. [more inside]

SF/Penninsula RentFilter: Is this normal? (EOY 2023 edition)
I've recently moved back to the Bay Area after living on the East Coast for a bit and am looking for an apartment. So far, every place I've contacted has had the agent or landlord requesting an online credit check and application before showing me the apartment. That seems fishy as hell to me, but is this just the new normal in SF & Peninsula? [more inside]

Paying my rent

How does universal basic income not mean rent going up the same amount?
What it says on the tin. I'm not for or against UBI, I'm aware of the concept and it sounds interesting. But I am too stupid to understand it, because everyone keeps talking about UBI, and I can't imagine how if there was UBI, landlords wouldn't just go, "OK, you have an extra [UBI] a month? Guess what, your next month's rent is [current rent + UBI}." I need someone to explain to me how that isn't exactly what happens. I can understand most of the economics argument, but I'm missing this particular part, and I don't even know where to look for the answer. Who's got the papers, blog articles, and Tweet threads such to explain how UBI isn't just a wealth transfer to rentiers?
How to protect myself if things go south after my partner moves in?
I own my house outright. Practically and emotionally, my house is my one source of security in an unstable world (I have a terrible family of origin and am divorced from a borderline abusive ex). The thought of allowing someone to move into my house terrifies me, but I may be in that situation in a few months. How do I best protect my interests? [more inside]
Ratio of rent between two apartments at the same location
I want to propose an amount of rent to my landlord to move to an apartment across the hall. I think my suggestion will be to compare the market rate between the two, and increase my rent proportionately if necessary. Hoping for help on what the appropriate comparison between the two would be, and maybe bonus thoughts on how I should negotiate this. [more inside]

Is it common to be charged rent when house-sitting?
As the title asks - I am about to house-sit for a friend’s parents for a month and they are charging me (well below market rate for a house, but still non-trivial) rent. I’ve previously house-sat for others for free, with the understanding that looking after the house, taking mail, feeding pets etc was “payment” in exchange. Is this unusual? [more inside]

I need to show my credit score to rent. How do I get a print-out?

Dealing with mental illness & financial expectations from parents
I'm 24F, and struggle with severe anxiety and PTSD. Currently in therapy, but it'll take a while for me to gain basic functionality. I graduated from college in 2020, and have been unemployed ever since (mostly due to mental illness, but also the pandemic.) My college savings are running out, so I will need to move back in with my parents in order to get back on my feet. My mom wants me to pay rent even though they're financially stable. That feels off to me, but I can't tell if that's an appropriate reaction or if I'm expecting too much here. How should I navigate this? [more inside]
New Apartment, Same Building: Y/N?
I have the opportunity to move into an upgraded but much more expensive apartment two doors down from my current unit. Any advice for ending a lease early in the UK?
My situation has changed, and I need to end my lease early so that I can start another one elsewhere here in London. I started the current lease at the beginning of April 2022 after having lived here for one year already, and would like for my last day of tenancy to be the beginning of September 2022: that's five months of full tenancy, with three months notice.
Do you have any experience with doing this, and relevant advice for how to handle it going forward? [more inside]
How do I deal with eviction by my family?
I lost my business and went through a pretty rough patch with depression. I was invited to come live with my recently retired parents. They decided unilaterally that I was to start paying rent, based on local apartment prices or I was to get out immediately. They have threatened several times that they're going to change the locks on me if I don't pay rent. I'm not looking for suggestions such as moving in with friends, I'm looking to see if they have any rights to lock the doors and hand me a suitcase as I'm essentially a house guest. [more inside]
Is it legal for my landlord to increase my rent BEFORE my lease expires?
My apartment lease renews later this month and my rent will go up. Is it legal for my landlord to have charged me the new higher rent for the entire month of April even though part of the month falls under my current lease at a lower rent? My current lease has not yet expired.
This can't be right. I asked them to fix the error and they said it's not an error. In fact, after I asked, they upped the amount they say I owe, which feels punitive. [more inside]
Are all the rental listing sites the same?
Looking for, I think, a house with garden space in Durham/Chapel Hill. What's the best approach? The bulletin board at Weaver St. Market is gone :( Why can I still not search for "bathtub" and "landlord who values cleanliness"? Or even "minimal stairs, you clever thing!" [more inside]

Setting expectations for apartment showings with my landlord in NYC
I'm going to notify my landlord in NYC that I'll move out in 1 month, at the end of my lease. What are reasonable expectations for apartment showings as they find the next tenants? How to navigate potential rent increase in 2021
Our landlady has the past two years increased our rent around the anniversary of our move in date. After the first year we've been month-to-month lease. We love our place and have no plans to move. Given the state of the world, the fact that we've been able to keep paying rent on time, and the current local market, I'd love to not have a rent increase this year. I'm not amazing at these sorts of conversations, so would love some advice on how to proceed. [more inside]

Negotiating rent in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
My lease is up soon and my landlord just sent me the renewal paperwork. They're asking the same monthly amount as they did this past year. However, I'm fairly sure that rents for one bedroom apartments have dropped in my neighborhood (Williamsburg) due to the pandemic. How can I a) demonstrate this to my landlord and b) phrase a request for them to lower the monthly amount? [more inside]

Move to a larger/nicer but higher rent apartment due to work from home?
My partner and I are working from home for the foreseeable future. We currently live in an apartment we’ve never loved, but it is serviceable and the rent is low for our area. Alternatives for Dealing with a House
I've inherited a house that I can't live in it because I live many states away. My experience with property management companies has been terrible and so I'm not sure how reliable they are. I would like to keep it in my family even though I'm feeling my only real choice is to sell it. [more inside]

Paying rent by check via bank's Bill Pay - is this "reliable"?
I'm having to pay rent by check for the first time ever. Yay to outdated means of payment! Is there anything I should know about using my bank to send the check rather than doing it myself? I bank with Fidelity and notice it has a 'Deliver By' date that it allows me to choose. Am I pretty safe if I always put the date as by the 1st? New to the world of paying rent by check, so thanks! The landlord will also only allow it to be mailed, so no option of just handing it in.

How much housing leads to affordable housing?
I live in LA. You may have read that we're in a housing crisis many decades in the making. Inside baseball: in the left-liberal circles where I travel, there's a pretty fractious disagreement about whether supply-side solutions, i.e. just building more housing, are more likely to bring housing costs down or just further displacement. Can you point me to any writing (studies, journalism, etc.) that seek to explain just what conditions in the supply side of the housing market lead to increased housing affordability? [more inside]
