Long vacation apartment rental

How do I pay rent in Australia from a US bank account? Other AskMes have touched on issues people have had with US banks when traveling abroad for extended periods. Assuming I can manage this, I’m wondering how to pay rent since unlike most purchases I probably can’t put it on a credit card. Other than, say, getting a local friend to pay with money I supply.

Landlord's unrealistic cleaning demands and a couch held hostage.

Please advise on how to proceed proactively and cautiously to prevent conflict from what seems like retaliatory whims after landlord spent money removing mold. I rent a furnished basement in a house with landlords. Unrelated to mold, they were replacing furniture and removed the couch to make space for a new one. After several days without a couch, I requested it be delivered. They said “no”; I cost them money due to unspecified “neglect.” My rent was increased 20% and insist I pay $1000 for FOUR professional deep cleanings because the place is messy. I'm feeling squeezed. An ask about... asking

It's about that time, y'all: I'm starting my apartment hunt in earnest. (AKA, The Almighty Mommy Goddess' dad gave a budget to get me the f out, because Reasons.) What have you asked of people who are the gatekeepers of residences? I know the big stuff - square footage, why is there carpeting in the kitchen, monthly utilities, etc. What other questions I should be asking? What are things that you wished you'd known about, sooner - the good, the bad, and the ugly? Thank you!

Paying rent and getting credit for it?

In a new apartment and considering rent payment options. I could pay my rent by credit card, and there would be a 3% fee for doing so. The portal where I set up the rent payment also suggested I might want to report the rent payment to the credit agencies for a $6 per month fee. [more inside]

SF/Penninsula RentFilter: Is this normal? (EOY 2023 edition)

I've recently moved back to the Bay Area after living on the East Coast for a bit and am looking for an apartment. So far, every place I've contacted has had the agent or landlord requesting an online credit check and application before showing me the apartment. That seems fishy as hell to me, but is this just the new normal in SF & Peninsula? [more inside]

How does universal basic income not mean rent going up the same amount?

What it says on the tin. I'm not for or against UBI, I'm aware of the concept and it sounds interesting. But I am too stupid to understand it, because everyone keeps talking about UBI, and I can't imagine how if there was UBI, landlords wouldn't just go, "OK, you have an extra [UBI] a month? Guess what, your next month's rent is [current rent + UBI}." I need someone to explain to me how that isn't exactly what happens. I can understand most of the economics argument, but I'm missing this particular part, and I don't even know where to look for the answer. Who's got the papers, blog articles, and Tweet threads such to explain how UBI isn't just a wealth transfer to rentiers?

Dealing with mental illness & financial expectations from parents

I'm 24F, and struggle with severe anxiety and PTSD. Currently in therapy, but it'll take a while for me to gain basic functionality. I graduated from college in 2020, and have been unemployed ever since (mostly due to mental illness, but also the pandemic.) My college savings are running out, so I will need to move back in with my parents in order to get back on my feet. My mom wants me to pay rent even though they're financially stable. Any advice for ending a lease early in the UK?

They have threatened several times that they're going to change the locks on me if I don't pay rent. Is it legal for my landlord to increase my rent BEFORE my lease expires?

My apartment lease renews later this month and my rent will go up. Is it legal for my landlord to have charged me the new higher rent for the entire month of April even though part of the month falls under my current lease at a lower rent? My current lease has not yet expired. This can't be right. I asked them to fix the error and they said it's not an error.
