Personal experience restoring matted carpet?

Hi! I'm looking for personal tales of DIY restoration of matted wall-to-wall carpet, presumably with a carpet rake and a steamer or some other device. I don't expect it to be perfect--I just want it to be good enough to rent to fairly well-to-do students. Considering the high price of putting down a new floor, cost is no object for this question. Thank you!

Travel insurance for chateau rental for 1 week?

A US-citizen friend is going to rent a chateau in France for 1 week for 8 people for a Big Life Event this fall (not a big party, no activities beyond people staying there). Advice/timing for returning a rental car to LAX and flying home

I’m on vacation in LA, staying near the Santa Monica Pier. I’ve got a rental car I need to return. My fight is at 11:55 AM PT this Sunday, Jan 7. How long should I count on it taking to get from my hotel to the gate? What’a good time to leave? (I’ve been hearing scary stuff about construction around the airport leading to super-long times from the car rental to the gate) [more inside]

DIY Collage Frame?

I have an absolute whackload of art pieces that are framed in cheap plain black frames. I want to hang them on my (rented) walls in various gallery walls and was thinking that to minimize the number of holes that need to go in my (rented) walls, maybe I could glue the smaller frames together as a collage frame first and then hang it from one or two holes instead of like 16 holes. Is this plausible? Do you have any advice on how to do it? [more inside]

How to buy a car for just one year?

I don’t currently have or need a car. In June, I’m moving to a new city for 1 year, after which I move back home. It’s a town that you need a car in, though with the intensity of my job and a nonexistent commute, I’m probably only going to use said car 2-3x per week. What’s the smart move here? I’d be tempted to buy a crappy used car for the year but I won’t have the time or mental bandwidth to deal with car troubles. Buying something expensive, though, seems silly given how little I’m going to end up using it before reselling whatever I get. What do?

Rental garage door is developing issues; advice?

I rent a house and the garage door has over the past two months opened itself three times. Two of those times were not witnessed; once was fully observed. That time, it touched down as requested but then went immediately back up again on its own. When halted and sent back, it stayed down the second time. Should we live in two homes, assisted by AirBnB?

Me and my wife own a house in LA. We're sort of tired of city life, for now, and want to spend most of our time outside of the city. We have enough money for a down payment for a (modest) place in the Joshua Tree area. However, paying two mortgages would be ridiculous and beyond our means. What we want to do is make both homes AirBnB ready, such that we could move back and forth as desired, while recouping the mortgage on the property we weren't staying at.
