98th Natsu Koushien - Day 11, Game 4 - Nichinan Gakuen (Miyazaki) v Hokkai (Minami Hokkaido)

Last Round of 16 game. Winner gets a crack at Seikou Gakuin, which seems like a good and bad matchup at the same time by now. From the games so far, Hokkai by far has the bigger task ahead of them while Nichinan Gakuen has shown their competence in their games so far.

15:22 - First pitch!

Well, Nichinan Gakuen not wasting any time. Yoshiga hits a single through the left side. 2 down now and Yoshiga at 3rd, Masuda hits a hard grounder up the 3rd base line and off of Yuuki into foul territory. Yoshiga scores easily and it's 1-0 just like that.

Surprisingly to me anyways, Hokkai would have a response soon after. Bottom 2nd,Taiga leads off with a base hit past Maeda. 2 down and Taiga now at 3rd, Gehou would hit a single to left and there we are at a tie game, 1-1.

I'm actually surprised to see Hokkai having as much success as they are against ace Moriyama. I guess part of it is that Moriyama isn't really firing it in there as he maxes out in the mid-120s. So in the 3rd they have runners at the corners and 2 out, but fail to score. and then in the 4th they get back to back hits from Fuse and Gehou, but when Oonishi strikes out Fuse must've had his signs crossed up because he's stuck in no-man's land and run down for the 3rd out. While they have the advantage right now on offense, they need to be converting these opportunities into runs.

The game hits the break all square at 1-1. Neither ace is completely dominating if you look at strikeouts, but both have managed the game really well as it has zipped along at a quick 50 minutes.

Hokkai would get first crack at breaking the deadlock. Bottom 6, Yuuki whizzes one past Moriyama into center for a base hit. Taiga lays down a bunt, but the Nichinan defense waits for it to go foul... which it never does! And to make matters worse, after a conference, Kawamura lays down a bunt that Moriyama fields, goes to 3rd, only to see the 3B not covering the bag! All safe and it's manrui, no out!!

Now Nichinan gets one of those outs back when Fuse grounds to short. Ishijima goes home for 1, but that's all they get.

And now Gehou grounds to short! Ishijima goes to 2nd for 1, throw to 1st is the double play and somehow Nichinan Gakuen escapes!

However, they aren't immediately able to turn that into momentum for their side, so it kind of sits in the middle while the two teams fight for it. In the meantime, both teams scuffle at the plate.

And then suddenly the run comes out of nowhere. Bottom 8th, Moriyama innocuously hits Sugano. After a sac bunt Taiga drives a ball into the left center field gap! That will score Sugano and it's 2-1 Hokkai!

And then...

Kawamura hits a ball to right, Hamamoto chases after it, goes to the wall...

And it's gone! It's gone! Hamamoto hits a 2-run HR and Hokkai is suddenly up 4-1!!

There would be no coming back for Nichinan Gakuen as Moriyama futilely screams while holding back tears. Nichinan would go down in order in the 9th as Hokkai moves onto the best 8, 4-1.

09:30 - First Pitch!

Both teams going with different pitchers to start the game. Probably in an attempt to save the arms for the home stretch should they get there. Also given who they may be drawing into, beating the other team with as much 2nd tier stuff is desirable.

But in a game like this where neither team is all that great, it really boils down to execution. The team who minimizes mistakes wins. Not like the powerhouse teams where there is some room for error. For these teams there usually isn't.

Judging from the starters used this seems to be the case.

And unfortunately for Nichinan Gakuen, they make the first unforced error in the 2nd inning.

It starts innocuously enough when Kinoshita singles to left. But when Shichino pops a bunt down the 1st base line, no one can get to it to catch it, and then they wait too long to see if it goes foul (which it never does).

After a sac bunt, Kurisu hits a ball to 2nd, but Maeda is anticipating the throw home and whiffs on the ball. That allows both Kinoshita and Shichino to score for a 2-0 Shiritsu Wakayama lead.

Then after a walk to the last batter Hamano (which is a cardinal sin), Kawasaki singles to right making it a 3-0 game and forcing Nichinan Gakuen to send in ace Moriyama.

It was Shiritsu Wakayama's turn to reciprocate in the 3rd.

After Ishida led of with a single, and moved to 2nd. Kurusu then could not find the strike zone at all walking both Nagahara and Yoshiga on 4 straight (and it wasn't even close). However, Nichinan was not able to bring in more than 1 run, and that was on Maeda's sac fly. 3-1.

Now obviously these teams can't execute each time they get an opportunity, but you expect them to do so at some point. And the more you get, the more likely you should be able to convert one of them into runs.

We could see this in the inning following. Shiritsu Wakayama would get a 1-out and a 2-out single from Kinoshita and Okamoto, but with 2 down they needed a hit and couldn't get one.

Nichinan Gakuen actually had a good chance in the 4th when Hagiwara had a double to left center, but was left stranded there by the following 2 batters.

Shiritsu Wakayama wasted a chance in their half of the 4th when after a leadoff hit by Hamano, Yamazaki couldn't lay down a good bunt, and when Kawasaki laid down his, it was successful, but when the ball gets dislodged in a collision, Hamano goes for 3rd and is thrown out.

That tails directly into the 5th for Nichinan Gakuen where with one down Nagahara is hit. After a flyout Kurusu seems poised to get out of the jam. However, his plan of attacking Maeda and Masuda backfires, because without pitching inside, the batters cheat on the pitch. Maeda taking it the other way and Masuda pulled over Shichino's head, both for doubles and both for an RBI tying the game at 3-3.

That's where the game would be at the break where Shiritsu Wakayama has handed the momentum to Nichinan Gakuen. In addition, Kurusu I don't believe has an answer for the middle of the lineup. Should he face them again, he'll be in trouble.

As I had hoped Shiritsu Wakayama goes to their ace Akaba. Unfortunately, he's struggling against the bottom of the lineup. Hagiwara had a routine grounder to short, but Hamano's short hop means Kitajima can't field it. After that was a single by Ishijima.

The contact play was a failure for Nichinan Gakuen as Ishijima went home and initiated the rundown. However, walking Moriyama meant the top of the lineup was definitely going to get involved.

Akaba gets a second key out when he strikes out Nagahara on an inside fastball, but once again Shiritsu Wakayama gets in their own way as Okamoto is called for catcher's interference. a run scores and it's 4-3 with Maeda coming to the plate.

And Akaba walks Maeda making it 5-3. Masuda swings over a fastball down and away to retire the side, but it really looks like they're pitching a bit scared. Almost all pitches were away.

At this point I'm seeing if there's any life in the Shiritsu Wakayama offense. If there's none in the next couple of innings, they're done.

Leadoff double by Shichino is a good start in the 6th, and a grounder gets him to 3rd. However, Akaba can't hit a ball on the outside half of the zone, and Hamano grounds out.

They get another try at it in the 7th when Yamazaki walks but after a sac bunt and a flyout there's quickly 2 down. That's when Kitajima reaches out on an outside fastball and drives it over Hamamoto's head for an RBI double making it 5-4. They're within 1, but need to continue creating opportunities for themselves to possibly convert.

However, in the 8th, after Okamato dumps a ball into left center for a hit, he tries to steal 2nd, but is thrown out by a good margin - killing the potential rally and leaving it for the 9th inning.

Now all Akaba has to do is hold serve, but Maeda-Masuda stand in first. Akaba walks Maeda again, but on the first pitch Masuda grounds into the 6-4-3 double play!

The hard part seems over, but Hamamoto singles to center.

And then to Hagiwara, who may have been forgotten, Akaba pitches one inside, but somehow that Hagiwara is able to send down the RF line for an RBI triple. 6-4 and certainly a key insurance run for Nichinan Gakuen.

And that's how the game ends as Shiritsu Wakayama goes quietly in the 9th. Nichinan Gakuen advances, and with the matchup against Hokkai, could reach the Best 8.

98th Natsu Koushien - Day 5, Game 1 - Hachiouji (Nishi Tokyo) v Nichinan Gakuen (Miyazaki)

We're rounding out the 1st round today and starting the 2nd on this short schedule day. Shiritsu Wakayama or Hiroshima Shinjyou await the winner of this match.

Hachioujji defeated both Toukaidai Sugao and Waseda Jitsugyou, but ace Saotome not a power ace at all. Nichinan Gakuen established power, but did not face substantial competition. Tokyo would be the stronger prefecture of the two, so penciling a winner will be difficult.

09:30 - First Pitch!

1st Inning
Oh, this is a surprise! Both aces throw in the mid to upper 120s!!

I'm not as surprised out of Miyazaki, but winning with that in Nishi Tokyo? That's impressive in it's own right! Looking at it in that light, the battle isn't with the offenses, it's with which pitcher can maintain his control of the zone the longest. When you can't throw hard, control is everything.

The first inning sees batters taking quite a few pitches. Yamaguchi gets a leadoff walk for Hachiouji in their half of the frame, but otherwise both pitchers are off to a good start.

2nd Inning
Hamamoto for Nichinan gets the first hit in the game, a single through the 6-hole. They don't elect to play for the one-timer, and while Hagiwara give the ball a good thump, he lines out to left. Ishijima hits a clean single to right on a ball up and in to given them a decent scoring chance, but Ishida goes after a slider ont he first pitch and pops out to end the inning.

Moriyama willing to shorten the game getting the Hachiouji batters to make contact. 12 pitches,3 routine groundouts.

3rd Inning
Nichinan getting all the opportunities so far. Nagahara gets a one-out base hit as the ball takes an odd hop at Ishidzuka, but he's thrown out by the slimmest of margins by Hosono, killing the rally.

Hachiouji meanwhile gets their first hit, from Hosono no less, a single to shallow center.

But on a missed bunt attempt, he's caught straying too far from 1st! Hagiwara fires to 1st and they nail him for the 2nd out!

Moriyama finishes it off snagging a comebacker by his counterpart Saotome. It's a real pitcher's duel to start.

4th Inning
Nichinan Gakuen is making good contact on Saotome's pitches, but is just missing the sweet spot. Maeda and Hamamoto just get under a ball and fly out to left, and Masuda hits a liner, but right at Takenaka.

Moriyama continues to get groundouts, recording the first 2 in that manner. But then out of nowhere Shiihara lines a single over a leaping Maeda, and then Hojyou does the same over Ishijima! Back-to-back hits and Hachiouji has their first real chance!

Onoda meanwhile is taking real close pitches, almost striking out twice, but instead working the count full.

He hits a grounder to the left side, but Ishijima runs it down, throw to 1st.... OUT!  Nichinan with the great double play and they're out of the jam!

5th Inning
Finally those hard hits are finding the gaps for Nichinan Gakuen! Hagiwara hits a single to left. Then, they continue trying the hit-and-run on Ishijima's AB until he finally delivers a hit to right! That means runners at the corners and no out!

But, when Ishida hits a ground ball to 2nd, Hachiouji actually concedes the run! They turn the double play and give Nichinan Gakuen the 1-0 lead!

In the bottom half, Hachiouji gets a chance again with 2 outs. Hosono draws just the 2nd walk from Moriyama, then Saotome lines a first-pitch single to left.

But that last hit escapes them. Yamaguchi grounds out to short and we're at the break. It's a quick game with good pitching, great defense and chances for both sides.

6th Inning
Hachiouji makes its change at pitcher, sending in #11 Yonehara to finish the game.

(At this point I had to attend a meeting and could only watch the game in which I will have a writeup, but Yonehara basically cratered the moment he came in, allowing 5 runs and effectively making the game out of reach.)

Day 3, Game 1 - Nichinan Gakuen (Miyazaki) vs. Akashi Shougyou (Hyogo)

So far, the games haven't been all that competitive in the end. Hopefully this changes today with our opening matchup.

Akashi Shougyou has the better resume on paper having wins over Fukuchiyama Seibi and Houtoku Gakuen, though both have faded away as of late so using them as benchmark wins do not count as much as it once did - especially since Houtoku Gakuen was passed over for an invite.

Yoshitaka's numbers don't look bad on face value, but in his last couple of outings, specifically in the Kinki Super-Regionals, he gave up a lot more hits and issued more walks - which eventually led to their downfall against Osaka Touin - though how Yoshitaka gave up only 5 runs giving up 12 hits and 6 walks is beyond me.

Offensively, they were never totally embarrassed in any of the games - everyone got their share of hits and runs, which is at least a positive.

Nichinan Gakuen's resume is rather light. The semifinal win against Shounan is their keystone win, but then was shutdown in the final by Shuugakukan. The pitching staff appears loth to issue a walk, which is good and Moriyama's K rates didn't decline with the step up in competition, so there's that.

Offensively the team seems to go for the "go big or go home" strategy. For the competition they faced, their 0.295 BA isn't all that impressive. But 3 batters in their lineup have an ISO equal or greater than their BA -  - Hamamoto (0.450 BA, 0.450 ISO), Nagahara (0.286/0.428) and Ishijima (0.250/0.542). And Masuda's isn't bad either (0.357/0.286).

So the question is whether that power we see translates at all. If it does, then Yoshitaka will need to tread carefully. But if not, then they might struggle to move on to the next round.

____________________________________________________________

09:02 - First Pitch!

Yoshitaka seems a little shaky to start. Fastball sitting in the upper 130s, but really unable to locate it. Ishijima takes the opportunity to take a fastball sitting in the zone to left for a one-out single.

It appears he has a slider, 2-seamer, splitter, and the slow curve that he can't seem to get over the plate consistently.

And with 2 down Ishijima jumps the gun way too early for 2nd and is run down for the 3rd out.

Moriyama on the other hand is starting off very well. He is hitting the bottom of the zone time and time again and early Akashi Shougyou is having trouble reaching it - despite him throwing in the 120s. He induces 2 golf shots and a K in his opening frame.

Things don't improve for Yoshitaka in the 2nd. He leaves a change smack in the middle of the zone and Hamamoto hits a no-doubter down the left side for a HR. 1-0 Nichinan, but it could be more as his fastballs are high and suggesting a release point way too early.

But given the lead, Moriyama for some reason can't find the form from the 1st. Falling behind his first batter 3-0, he leaves one just a little too much in the zone and Konishi drives it over Hamamoto's outstretched glove for a double. Despite being bunted over, neither Matsushita nor Yoshitaka can drive him in. Instead, both hits bounders to Maeda and are retired.

Yoshitaka settles (just) in the 3rd as he is more comfortable with his change and splitter - though he does get a wakeup call when Ishijima lines a ball back to Yoshitaka, who deploys the self-preservation button and snags the ball out of reflex more than anything.

The respite proves brief though as Masuda checks in with his first single to center. Throw in a balk where it looks like his leg twitched before going to 1st and he's under duress again. But the split again saves him as Hamamoto grounds to short, and Hagiwara waves over one in the dirt (at 135!) for strike 3.

The inconsistent play continues though as Yoshitaka breezed through the 5th with no issues.

As for Moriyama, he's doing a good job working the edges of the strike zone. He yields only a soft single to center after that ringing double with all the other outs either off the end of the bat, or jam shots.

Akashi Shougyou gets another shot at it when Oota gets a single to start the 6th. But they need two bunts to move the runner to 2nd and things look bleak. But Hashimoto is able to get around on a pitch and single to right, driving in the douten run without a throw making it all square 1-1.

As the game progresses to the final stages of regulation, it seems like the opportunities have flipped. Yoshitaka, despite still having control issues, is leaning on the splitter heavily to get his outs - and it's working.  Meanwhile, offensively they've been able to get runners on every inning.

Their best chance comes in the 8th when Oota bloops one just in front of Nagahara. And when he can't field it cleanly, Oota takes 2nd. Hazama-kantoku calls time to talk to his runner (odd), but Gotou winds up laying down the bunt.

Oonishi already showing bunt before the pitch, takes a couple. But then they go for it on a 2-0 count, and somehow Oonishi is able to reach up and lay down a perfect squeeze. Moriyama is late, and has to go to 1st, giving up the run, and this late. 2-1 Akashi Sbougyou.

Nichinan with no time to respond still does! Maeda gets a hold of a letter-high fastball and drives it in front of the wall in right center for a triple! Even after Hazama-kantoku calls time. Yoshitaka plunks Maeda on the number, bringing up... Hamamoto.

And he hits a clean single to center, leveling the game once again! 2-2, and still only one down!

Once again, Yoshitaka goes to the splitter. Strikes out Hagiwara for the 2nd out, and Yoshiga swings on the first pitch flying out to center. Akashi gets one last chance to avoid our first enchousen game.

One down in the bottom of the 9th, Matsushita lines a ball past a ducking Moriyama. And then when Yoshitaka lays down a bunt, Moriyama's throw is behind the runner pulling Ishijima off the bag. What's worse, Matsushita steps off after the safe call and Ishijima had a chance to tag him if he just had his wits about him,

The snowball continues when Moriyama inexplicably hits Fujiwara on the back - something very unusual. Morisaki-kantoku doesn't call time, and Fujii lays down the sayonara squeeze to end the game 3x-2.

But, while a sayonara squeeze would be exciting, in this case it just wasn't. Moriyama up until then hadn't really been all that terrible, and was arguably the better pitcher (Yoshitaka got bailed out by the splitter a LOT). It just seemed like unfortunate circumstances that cost them the game more than something overly bad.

In review though, it felt to me that Moriyama was somehow late to a squeeze even though he knew it was coming. In reality it was because he was still in the windup and not out the stretch that allowed the runner from 3rd to get a large jump. That is all on Moriyama.

Even with that, Nichinan didn't play a bad game, Akashi just got things to fall their way in the end and I guess they advance.

Previewing the projected field - Nichinan Gakuen (Miyazaki)

Nichinan Gakuen is no stranger to Koshien, but they tend to go years between appearances and it's been a while since they've had a modicum of success. Furthermore, the resume is rather light as they didn't face any of the familiar teams out of Miyazaki, and then also got a favorable schedule in the super-regionals before finally running into Shounan in the quarterfinals, just eking that one out before getting routed by Shuugakukan.

With such a soft schedule it is hard to make any good analysis on their prospects. Ace Moriyama Genki (森山 弦暉) seems to be the guy they realistically trust in their big games, but I don't have any info on him (natch). His big problem seems to be getting out of the gate, having given up 7 runs in the first 2 innings of the semis and finals. Minoo Yuuki (蓑尾 優希), Ueno and Kurihara were used in relief, but again, not when they faced Koushien-level competition.

Offenseively, cleanup hitter LF Masuda Kaisei (益田 海成) was by far their most consistent hitter on the team, but you couldn't say look at the top of the lineup and see a decent set of hitters, and that is also concerning. This may mean that they only way they got a bit was because of their soft schedule.

Expect a one-and-done performance barring an easy pairing, and that's no gimme either.

Day 2, Game 1 - Nichinan Gakuen (Miyazaki) v. Touhou (Aichi)

Well, it was an interesting opening day to say the least with the spring champions falling, a blowout, and finally a normal game to finish out the day.

Wonder what will happen today....

The theme of avoiding the powerhouses continues in the first game of full action. Nichinan Gakuen only had to go through Miyazaki Nichidai and Nisshou Gakuen to run the prefecture. And in both of those cases, they were low scoring affairs with Nichinan winning 3-1 and 2-0. In fact, that 1 run against Miyazaki Nichidai was the only one they gave up the entire tournament.  But given the competition and the low scores, it certainly is a point of concern.

Same goes for Touhou. No Chuukyoudai Chuukyou, no Aikoudai Meiden. Just a 6-3 over Toyokawa in the 5th round as their notable victory. But it would appear that they have a super rookie in #10 Fujishima Kento that might help carry them.  As a rookie, he can supposedly hit the mid 140s on the radar gun and has a changeup in addition to the standard fare.  He was certainly successful in the Aichi taikai, but

Still, I know it sounds like a broken record, but with neither team really tested against the upper tier teams, it's hard to put a finger on who has the advantage.

08:30 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Not the best of starts for Fujishima as his pitches are up and he walks Tabuki to start the game.

Uemura lays down the bunt, but Fujishima goes to 2nd for 1, throw by Suzuki is wide!  Uemura takes off for 2nd, but the ball bounces off the wall and Kodama fires to 2nd, and they get the double play anyways!

Fujishima may be the super rookie, but apparently he's still hittable. Takumi singles to center, and Hagiwara gets it off the end of the bat, but it's through the left side for a base hit!  Fujishima in trouble again.

But Tomoya flies out to left and the inning is over.  No damage done, but Nichinan showing they can hit early.

Bottom 1st
Suzuki with a soft base hit to center, and he goes for 2!  Throw in, and it's not in time!  That's a hustle double from Suzuki!

Okada tries to lay down the bunt, but the defense crashes in and he can't advance.

No matter though because Kodama singles to left center!  Suzuki on his wheels again, and there's no throw home! Touhou leads 1-0 just like that!

2 down, and Kodama tries to take 2nd, but is thrown out by Hagiwara for the 3rd out.  Still, Touhou takes the early lead!

Top 2nd
Yokokawa somehow gets on a ball way inside and shoots it through the right side for a single.  He's moved over to 2nd.

あ。

Azuma gets hit on the helmet, but it's not a fastball and it's a glancing blow.  Still an injury runner comes in as per mandate.

Shintani with a single through the right side!  Yokokawa has to hold at 3rd, but it's manrui for Nichinan and it's back to the top of the order and Tabuki!

He's constantly trying to take the ball the other way, but winds up hitting it right to Miyazawa!  He goes home for the force and there's 2 out!

Fujishima finally dialing it up, hitting 140 on the gun.  He gets ahead of Uemura 1-2....

SANSHIN!!!

Uemura looks at a ball just on the inside half for strike 3 and Fujishima with the guts pose runs back to the dugout! He may be a 1st year, but he's not letting the game get to him.

Bottom 2nd
Meanwhile Touhou works on Yokokawa.  Mine with a ball back up the middle for a leadoff base hit.

Kudou follows that up with a solid single through the left side.

Mizoguchi with a blooper to center, and that's in for a base hit!  Manrui for Touhou!

And Kanagawa-kantoku is making a change! #10 Yanagi Yuusei comes in for Uemura, and takes the hill.  Yokokawa goes to left and Azuma goes to 2nd.

And Yanagi is throwing gas.  He's hitting 140 on the gun and the ball seems to rise all the way to the glove.  Fujishima just swings and whiffs on 3 straight.

SQUEEZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matsubara lays down a perfect squeeze bunt and Yanagi can only go to 1st!  Mine scores and it's 2-0 Touhou!

Suzuki flies out to deep center, but Touhou puts another crooked number on the board.

Top 3rd
Nichinan Gakuen swinging away as Takumi and Hagiwara both fly out.  And Tomoya just walks back the dugout after a 118 kph curve just goes right down the pipe for strike 3.

Bottom 3rd
Yanagi can throw harder, but he's missing outside.  Okada draws the leadoff walk.  Kodama deadens the ball and they're in business once again.

Whoops.  Okada goes a tad too early for 3rd, and he's easy prey for Yanagi.  It's your standard rundown for the 2nd out.

But Yanagi's control is still lacking and he hits Miyazawa.

And he's not even close to Mine, throwing all 4 balls outside.  Nichinan looks to be in bad shape on the hill...

Now he's missing low to Kudou.

Yanagi puts a ball over, but right in Kudou's wheelhouse as he singles to center! Miyazawa scores and Touhou extends the lead to 3-0!

There were no other pitchers used, so unless Kangawa-kantoku has something up his sleeve, he might be in trouble.

Yanagi gets the count full, but Mizoguchi hits a ball down the 3rd base line... FAIR!

It bounces over the bag and Shintani can't get it on the dive!  Mine scores on the double , it's 4-0 and Kanagawa-kantoku calls for time as #18 Wama warms up in the bullpen.

Yanagi actually gets ahead of Fujishima, but winds up plunking him to load the bases!

Yanagi gets ahead of yet another batter, 1-2 to Matsubara.  He hits one right to 3rd, but it's off Shintani's glove and takes a left turn into foul territory! Another run scores and it's 5-0 Touhou!

The inning finally ends when Suzuki is jammed and grounds to 2nd.

I suppose it could be worse when you send 9 batters up, but Touhou extends their lead in a big way.

Meanwhile, Nichinan is trying to swing their way out of the deficit, but instead they get 3 groundouts on just 5 pitches!

Bottom 4th
At lest it looks like Yanagi's pitches are getting close to the zone, Okada is taking some healthy hacks, but grounds to short.

And then he leaves one too far in and Kodama singles to center.

Miyazawa also gets a hold of one in the zone and puts some zip on it, but Tomoya makes the leaping catch for the 2nd out.

Hey! It's a donut! Mine can't make it 3 times on base as he strikes out looking on a Yanagi fastball that touches the outside corner.  They finally stop Touhou, but the battle's far from over.

Top 5th
Last batter Shintani about the only thing going right for Nichinan as he lines over Miyazawa for a base hit!

Oh? Tabuki with a grounder that sneaks its way through to left for a base hit!  Now Kanagawa has Yanagi bunt the runners over and a base hit can put a dent in the deficit.

Takumi bloops one to right!  Matsubara has no play and both runners come in to score!  It's 5-2!

Hagiwara with a drive to left center!  That's past the outfielders!  Takumi heading home, the throw is late!  Mine fires to 3rd, and they gun down Hagiwara trying to take an extra base.  It's 5-3, but I think that's a baserunning error despite the run.

Tomoya grounds to 2nd to end the inning, but despite the base running mistake, Nichinan responds with a 3-spot of their own!

Bottom 5th
Touhou's bats though are on the prowl again.  Kudou lines a single to right and despite being 2-2, Mizoguchi bunts him along to 2nd.

Fujishima with a long AB, fouling off 5 pitches before hitting a ball back up the middle.  It goes off Yanagi's glove but right to Tomoya who tags Kudou for the out, but the throw to 1st is way too high and Fujishima gets 2nd on the throw.

Matsubara in a complete carbon copy of Fujishima's AB, fouls off several of his own behind 1-2.

This time though he hits a short liner down the right field line! Tanigawa tries to make the diving catch, but at least keep the ball in front of him.  Fujishima though scores on the double and it's 6-3.

Oh that error is proving costly! Suzuki with a drive to deep right and it's over Tanigawa's head!  Matsubara scores and Suzuki is in with a triple to make it 7-3!

With Wama warming up in the bullpen, Yanagi walks Okada on 4 straight, all outside.

Kodama continues the assault on the Nichinan pitching staff with a solid base hit through th left side.  8-3 now for Touhou.

Miyazawa flies out to center to end the inning, but Nichinan Gakuen at the break find themselves having to outhit their pitching.

Top 6th
Nichinan continues to try and swing early to get on base, but again, it winds up being a short inning.  6 pitches later and Touhou will be back on the bats.

Bottom 6th
Yokogawa takes the hill once again, with Azuma going back to left and #15 Tsukamoto coming in for Yanagi to play 2nd.

But after recording the first out, Kudou doubles to the right center field gap.

あ。

Well, that went downhill fast.  Mizoguchi hits a 2-run HR to right and it's 10-3 Touhou.

Fujishima checks in with his first hit, a scorcher past a diving Shintani for a single.  #11 Iita is being sent out to the bullpen.

After a flyout, Suzuki gets yet another base hit, this time down the left field line for another double.

Okada pops out to short, but Touhou continues to pile on the runs....

Top 7th
Now they're just showing off,  Grounder to the right side of 2nd, Miyazawa flips to Suzuki who goes to 1st for the out.

Tabuki and Tsukamoto go down in order and Nichinan may be waving the white flag now.

Bottom 7th
Touhou appears to be doing the right thing and trying to cycle through the game quickly with the big lead.  6 pitches later and we're onto the 8th.

Top 8th
Takumi also one of the bright spots for Nichinan as he hits a deep gapper for a double and his 3rd hit of the game.

But he can't even advance another 90 feet as both Hagiwara and Tomoya fly out while Yokogawa hits it right to 1st for the 3rd out.

Bottom 8th
Kudou tries to go for the gusto I think, but he just flies out to center and is retired for the first time.

That allows Mizoguchi to catch up with a single to center.

Fujishima getting his swing down here late in the game, blasts one over Tabuki's head for a double.

There some discussion going on after Matsubara's flyout to center, but I can't make out what it's all about.

No matter though, Suzuki singles to right making it an 11-3 game.

And Touhou isn't stopping either.  They get Suzuki to 2nd on a feigned steal of home.

Mercifully though Okada goes down swinging to end the inning.

Top 9th
Last ups for Nichinan Gakuen, and Fujishima is given a break as ace # Ooi enters the game.

Nichinan Gakuen goes down swinging and Touhou advances with an easy 11-3 win.

Not much to say here.  Nichinan Gakuen's pitching just wasn't up to snuff today as Touhou knocked them around to the tune of 20 hits and 11 runs.  They make a return to Koushien, but the say is brief.

For Touhou, it won't be this easy going forward, but rookie Fujishima seems to be up to the task.
