86th Senbatsu - Day 6 - Game 3 - Komadai Tomakomai (Hokkaido) vs. Riseisha (Osaka)

The final game today will determine who will face Fukuchiyama in the Best 8.

Riseisha's game against Koyamadai can be pretty much thrown out.  When at Koushien, you are 2 outs away from a no-hitter, combined with the fact that their offense jumping on Itou early (though a lot of that was his own doing) - it's really hard to actually parse anything from this game.  And ace Mizota wasn't really tested on his control as Koyamadai just swung away.

The problem is, when a team is supposed to win, or wins in dominant fashion it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't proposition.  Riseisha was supposed to beat Koyamadai, so you just shrug your shoulders and say "well, they were supposed to do that".

For Komadai Tomakomai's game I had picked Souseikan because I thought Hokkaido as a whole was weaker than normal.  The caveat was that for Souseikan, their runs were scored on stats that were not inflated like they should have been.  So when Souseikan was 3-hit, in some ways it wasn't surprising given the prior results.  But Komadai's offense was for the most part muted with walks and errors aiding their run production, and thus could be a problem in this upcoming game.

14:27 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Mizota tries to get a slow curve by Yuuki, but Yuuki counters with a ball just out of the reach of Tsuji for a leadoff hit.  Sakai showing bunt, takes 2 pitches and falls behind 0-2.  Still, he manages to bunt the runner along.

Yasuda patient with Mizota gets ahead 2-0 before taking 2 hacks at the ball.  His third try pops the ball out to center.  2 down.

Wakamatsu is jammed, but his looper is just over the leaping Yoshida!  Yuuki rounding 3rd and he'll score as the throw in goes to 2nd! Komadai takes the 1-0 lead!

It's a hit and run, but Kamaya grounds out to short to end the inning.  Still, they fire the opening shot in the battle!

Bottom 1st
Not the best of starts.  Nakamura gives up a leadoff walk on 4 straight to Inoue.  His pitches are all up.  And his first pitch to Tsuji almost takes his head off.  Tsuji does eventually lay down the bunt.

Once again, Nakamura is high on his first pitch to Yoshida.  But, he does get him to swing under a slider and pop out back to Nakamura.  He appears to get out of the inning when Nakayama hits a ball to Suzuki, but he can't get a hold of the ball for some reason and everyone's safe.

Nakamura cannot continue to find the zone.  He walks Nishimura on 4 straight to load the bases.

Hatta does down and drives the slider to left!  That'll score a pair!  Inoue and Nakayama score to give Riseisha the 2-1 lead!

And it just gets worse!  Kinuta singles back up the middle, Tamari makes the stop, but can't flip the ball to 2nd in time!  Manrui for Riseisha again as Sasaki-kantoku calls time.

Tateishi cues a ball off the bat, Yasuda ranges over, makes the grab, goes to first... and gets the 3rd out.  However, Nakayama's struggles give back the lead he was given.

Top 2nd
Suzuki gets ahead 3-1, but watches strike 2... and strike 3 down the middle.

Hm... what's this?  Now it's Mizota who's having trouble locating a bit here, falling behind 2-0 to Niiyama. He hits a ball back up the middle, Inoue tracks it down, tries to glove toss to Yoshida for the relay, but can't quite make it work.  Base hit for Komadai as Sasaki-kantoku has Tamaru bunt.

But Nakamura will not get an AB (nor return to the mound for that matter) as #18 Yamaya comes in to try and drive in the douten run.

Yamaya isn't seeing anything good from Mizota and gets ahead 3-0 before a change goes over for a strike.  He tries to go to the well again, but walks the PH.

Mizota continues to miss with his pitches, falling behind Yuuki 3-0!  And he walks the bases loaded!

Sakai with a chance to tie the game, but before that Okada-kantoku calls time.

AUGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sakai goes after the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd!  WHY?  WHY SWING ON THE FIRST PITCH??

Bottom 2nd
Ace Kikuchi enters the game for Komadai Tomakomai to hold the deficit at1.

Kikuchi retires his first 2 batters easy enough, but winds up offering a free pass to Tsuji.  Doesn't matter as Yoshida skies a ball.  Kikuchi, Sakai converge, but it's Yasuda who winds up with the ball.

Top 3rd
Mizota's struggles continue as he hits Wakamatsu on a full count.

And now Sasaki-kantoku sends Wakamatsu to 2nd!  Hatta double clutches and his throw is just late - fortunate for Komadai Tomakomai.

Kamaya with a hard grounder into the gap on the left side!  Yoshida ranges over to get it, but is only able to block it as it deflects to his right.  Infield base hit for Kamaya.

Suzuki with a hot shot to 3rd, Tsuji blocks it, but it sneaks away from him too!  Throws to 1st... not in time!!  Wakamatsu scores and we're tied at 2-2!!

Niiyama with a drive to left!  Nakayama running back, still running back... It's over his head!  Both runners come in to score easily on Niiyama's double and Komadai takes a 4-2 lead!

Tamaru can't continue the hitting, but does at least move the runner to 3rd with a grounder to the right side.

Kikuchi gets some extra instructions before entering the box.  #10 Nagatani warms up in the bullpen.

And he takes a swing on the high fastball and singles to center!  Niiyama scores to make it 5-1.

Yuuki with a blast out of nowhere!  Nakayama has to run back again, and that falls in at the base of the wall!  Kikuchi scores and the throw to 3rd is a tad short and deflects high in the air.  We're at 6-1, and Mizota is pulled for #10 Nagatani.

Sakai strikes out to end the inning, but this inning they send out the bats and knock ace Mizota out of the game.

Bottom 3rd
Control seems to be missing in places as Kikuchi on his first pitch throws the curve and hits Nakayama on the head. Not too serious though, but Yoshida comes in as an injury runner.

That's strange, after Kikuchi gets Nishimura out, he's replaced by last game's starter #15 Itou Hiromi!  Wonder why...

And Hatta hits a shot to 1st that Sakai can't quite handle.  He scrambles into foul territory, but his toss back to 1st finds no one because Hiromi and Yasuda are late to the bag!  Riseisha with a small chance here to chip away.

But both Kinuta and Tateishi fly out to end the inning.

Top 4th
Nagatani can throw gas, hitting 145 at times with his fastball.  Yasuda flies out to center, though that's an adventure for Tateishi as he has to backpedal to make the catch.

Now Nagatani is just daring the batters to try and hit the fastball.  He hits 147 as Wakamatsu can't keep up.  Kamaya makes contact, but it's a ball to center that this time Tateishi fields better.

Bottom 4th
Nagatani does everything big apparently, booming a ball off the padding in left center for a leadoff double.

Then against Inoue, after getting ahead, he winds up walking him, putting runners at 1st and 2nd for Tsuji.  Okada-kantoku has them moved over for Yoshida.

Meanwhile, Hiromi seems to be struggling just a bit with his control.

Yoshida hits a ball to left, Wakamatsu has to back up a bit, and makes the catch.  But Nagatani doesn't take off!  He probably could have scored since Wakamatsu was on his heels, but he instead chooses to hold up!

And he's left stranded at 3rd!  Nakayama pops out to 2nd and Riseisha gets nothing!

Top 5th
Nagantani is throwing the token offspeed pitch, but he's not changing what's working.  Blows the fastball by not 1, not 2, but all 3 batters!

Bottom 5th
Riseisha's ouen-dan with the deep blue background and the yellow "R".

Nishimura has to take the defensive swing, chops one to 3rd where Suzuki has to make the quick throw to get Nishimura out.

Hatta gets jammed, but Tamaru gets all turned around by the wind and the ball falls in for a double!  More problems for Komadai as Kinuta lays down the safety bunt, but when Sakai fields it, Hiromi gets in the way of Sakai being able to toss the ball to 1st for the out!  Everyone's safe and once again Riseisha threatens!

Tateishi gives the gift right back!  He pops the first pitch up and Niiyama makes the catch near the back screen for the 2nd out!  But that still leaves Nagatani who had a double in his first AB.

But Hiromi goes after him! First pitch strike inside, followed by 3 straight sliders.  Count at 2-2.

SANSHIN!!!  Hiromi goes inside with the fastball again and Nagatani can't get the bat around!  Riseisha again is denied any runs as we head to the break.

Top 6th
Hiromi with a grounder to short, and Yoshida boots the ball.  His throw to 1st is too late and Komadai has a leadoff runner.

Yuuki, for all the good hitting, can't lay down the bunt and almost pops out twice.  He does lay down the bunt, and it's a hard one at that, but Nagatani elects to go to 1st.

Sakai takes an ill-advised swing on a fastball at his eyeballs and he pops out to Tsuji.

Yasuda with a high fly to left, Nakayama backs up, but doesn't get turned around and makes the catch to end the inning.

Bottom 6th
Mixed results for Hiromi.  Full count to Inoue, gets him to hit a chopper to 3rd.  Full count to Tsuji, winds up walking him.

Yoshida doesn't wait for the full count, he goes down and drives a ball to right center and off the wall for a double!  Runners on 2nd and 3rd with Nakayama up to bat.  Sasaki-kantoku calls for time.

Drive to left!  Wakamatsu sprinting back... sprinting back... makes the leaping catch!  Tsuji can walk home and the throw in goes off the cutoff man, Yoshida can also advance!  6-3 Komadai!

Nishimura with a single through the left side!  Yoshida scores and we have a ballgame now at 6-4!!

Riseisha's batter teeing off!  Hatta drive to right center, that takes a hop to the wall and another double means another run and Riseisha is within 1!  It's 6-5!

It's not that Hiromi is missing with his pitches, it's just that I think he thinks he's not getting the calls on the edges and as a result leaving them on the fat part of the plate.

Hiromi finally ends the inning as Kinuta flies out to left, but Komadai is in serious trouble despite holding onto the lead.

Top 7th
Hiromi is probably smarting after seeing Wakamatsu getting called out on the outside fastball wondering "Where's my call?".

Nagatani continues to fire the number 1 up there, but this time Kamaya wins drawing the walk.

Suzuki makes contact with the fastball, but can only pop it up to right.  2 down and Hatta has a quick word with Nagatani.

Kamaya takes off for 2nd and Hatta's throw isn't in time.  Now a base hit might score a run.

If anyone could get a base hit.  Niiyama can't catch up to the 145 fastball and the side is retired.

Bottom 7th
Sasaki-kantoku might want to think about another reliever as Hiromi walks Tateishi to start the inning.  Nagatani tries to lay down the bunt, but Sakai crashes in, throws to 2nd and gets the lead runner.  Throw to 1st, and Nagatani beats it out!

Inoue follows that with a ball back up the middle, but Tamaru fields it near the bag at 2nd!  He has to double back to get the force and his throw to 1st is just a little late.

And now it's a hit-and-run!  Ball back up the middle, Tamaru makes the snag, and barely (and I mean barely) beats Inoue to the bag for the 3rd out.

One bulled dodged.

Top 8th
Komadai continues to be hitless against Nagatani.  He's not throwing 140 anymore, but the batters still can't figure him out.

2 down for Yuuki, and he delivers his teams' first hit with a clean single to right!  And now he steals second!  If someone can get a hit, they can get an insurance run.

If being the operative word.  Sakai makes contact, but flies out to center.

Bottom 8th
Yoshida drive to right!  Kamaya going back, he's turned around, makes a desperate leap...

MAKES THE CATCH!!!!! WTF?!

That ball goes into the top of his webbing and he holds onto it as he hits the wall! That's 2 game saving catches by the outfield!!

I lost connectivity, but it appears that Nakayama got on base due to an error by Tamaru.  He's replaced by #16 PR Furutani.

AH!!!

Niiyama makes a snap throw to 1st and Furutani is caught too far out!  He's picked off and there's 2 outs!

Nishimura flies out to left and Kondai somehow holds on again for another inning!

Top 9th
Nagatani has held up his part of the bargain, yielding just 1 hit in his 6.1 innings of work.  Yasuda manages to make contact and fly out to left.

Which is more than what Wakamatsu and Kamaya can say as both go down swinging.

Bottom 9th
Komadai continues to give Riseisha chances!  Hatta routine grounder to 3rd, but Suzuki bobbles it not once, but twice and the error gives them the douten runner.

And now a bunt from Kinuta and Hiromi in his desperate attempt to field it knocks it back towards home leaving them with no play!  Sasaki-kantoku quickly calls time, but surely they're out of luck this time around.

Niiyama tries the snap throw to 2nd, but Tamaru has to stretch to keep it from going to center and thus can't get the tag.

Tateishi tries to lay down the bunt, but his 2nd attempts fails and it's 2-2 now...  Slider outside... no good.  Full count.

And time probably has run out.  Tateishi with a ball down the line to the wall!  Hatta scores, and Kinuta barely makes it to 3rd under the tag.  But it's 6-6 with no outs and the sayonara runner on 3rd.  They elect to walk Nagatani for the force at home.

First ball, Niiyama smothers.  Fastball outside, 2-0.  All the pressure is on Hiromi as he gets a strike across.

Inoue chopper back up middle!  Hiromi tips it with his glove, goes home for one, and Niiyama makes the dangerous throw to 3rd with Tateishi already sliding in.

1 out, Tsuji up.  Takes 3 hacks, fouls all 3 off but they're solid.  Hiromi tries to entice a swing, but no good.

Drive to left!  Wakamatsu back up, makes the catch!  Hatta heads home, throw in... off Tamaru's feet, and there will be no relay home!  サヨナラ!!  Riseisha finally comes through in the 9th to win 7-6!

Komadai seemed to have luck on their side in the 7th and 8th innings as they somehow kept Riseisha off the board despite the runners they had on base.  But sadly they couldn't get home before the clock struck 12, and the magic wore off.  Great job to Komadai Tomakomai for jumping out to a big lead, but also for Riseisha for coming back and applying pressure inning after inning.  There will be questions regarding Sasaki-kantoku's decision regarding the bullpen, but without more data, it would be hard to see what he was thinking.  But their run here in the spring is over.

Our first quarterfinal is now set - it's an all-Kinki matchup between Fukuchiyama Seibi and Riseisha.  They did not play each other in the Kinki super-regionals, and they'll be playing on 2 full days rest.

86th Senbatsu - Day 2 - Game 1 - Souseikan (Nagasaki) vs. Komadai Tomakomai (Hokkaido)

We're underway as the schedule goes back to the 9 AM start time (thankfully for me), and we start off with a matchup between teams on opposite sides of the map.

Komadai Tomakomai returns to Koushien thanks in part to a down year in Hokkaido.  Their numbers aren't as impressive compared to other years considering the competition, and given the already weak state of the region relative to the other super-regions, it could be an issue.

Soueseikan gets here thanks to Okinawa Shougaku.  Their pitching appears to be very good, but has to be a bit muted considering the competition.  They scored a bunch of runs, but it wasn't based on the usual inflated BA.  How much of it is actual ability is hard to say as of right now, which makes handicapping this game all that much harder though Kamimura Gakuen's performance yesterday gives some backing for Souseikan.

Souseikan (Nagasaki)

____________________________________________________________

09:01 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Well, Hiromi is chosen to start today, and is rudely interrupted as Haraguchi lines a slider down the left field line for a leadoff double.  Noguchi isn't bunting and tries to get a HBP, but didn't move so the ump doesn't buy it  Instead, he can't check on a changeup and goes down for the 1st out.

Hiromi has a low 130s fastball, with a slider, change and curve.  Control isn't that bad as he gets ahead of Makino 0-2 before he swings at a change and grounds to 2nd.  Haraguchi goes to 3rd with 2 down.

Hiromi works away on cleanup batter Onoda, and although he goes full, a 139 fastball up and away gets Onoda to chase ending the inning!

Bottom 1st
Hirowatari earns the ace number and takes the hill, although it is said that Washizaki may have been injured leaving Hirowatari to take the reins.

His delivery might make the ball explode from his hand as it just appears from behind him.

Yuuki seems late on the ball and hits it right to Makino for the first out.  But control might be a slight issue though as Sakai draws the full count walk, though it's negated when Yasuda hits into the textbook 4-6-3 DP to end the inning (Yasuda dives into 1st...).

Top 2nd
Hiromi isn't throwing particularly hard, but Souseikan's batters aren't really able to hold up on the balls outside.  Washizaki gets called going around on such a ball inside and Hiromi has his 3rd K.

What's this?  Niiyama appears to have been injured and has to go in the back for treatment.  Wonder what happened with his hand...

About 5 minutes later he pops out looking ok and the game resumes.

And it looks like this will be a game where Hiromi will be going deep into counts and high on the pitch count...  Euchidani stays in until the count goes full where he then grounds right to Yasuda for the 2nd out.

Mine too takes several pitches, and while Hiromi's fastball can go awry at times, his slider works just fine and Mine whiffs on it to retire the side.

Bottom 2nd
There's a new song from Komadai that I haven't heard before as Wakamatsu steps in.

Hirowatari has a forkball to go with his standard slider and curve.  Wakamatsu is a bit late on a fastball and while Noguchi races to the fence on the 1st base side the wind moves it around and away from him.

Wakamatsu gets jammed and hits a grounder back to Hirowatari for the first out.  Kamaya tries the first pitch instead and hits a HR (if we played in a silo) where Noguchi catches it for the 2nd out.

Suzuki stepping in goes back to the waiting game drawing another walk from Hirowatari.  But he's left stranded there when on a hit-and-run Niiyama punches it right to Mine for the 3rd out.

Top 3rd
Oota with a quick groundout to Yasuda for the first out.  I like what I'm seeing from Harumi.  He has decent enough control and misses in the right places (so far).

And it's a sped-up version of Erin's song from Touhou for Hirowatari! (I like that)  More importantly though he manages to get a walk on the full count.

But on the first pitch he's caught off 1st!  Niiyama goes to 1st, but Sakai is off balance!  His throw to 2nd is offline and slow and Hirowatari is safe!  Oy, that was a mess.

Once again, Harumi goes on the fastball away and Haraguchi's bat just can't reach it and there's 2 down!

Harumi gets out of the jam!  He goes inside on Noguchi and jams him!  Yuuki makes the catch in center to end the inning!

Bottom 3rd
I'm having a hard time determining if it's Hirowatari being good or the Komadai offense being bad, but so far, just 2 walks and no hits so far. If nothing else they're taking pitches on Hirowatari.

When they do swing, though not much happens.  Tamaru grounds to 1st.

Of course I say that and I'm proven wrong immediately! Harumi brings the stick as well, driving a ball way over the drawn in outfield!  Haraguchi has to run back as Harumi gets a triple!

Yuuki with a grounder to the left side!  The drawn in infield can't get it and Harumi scores to make it 1-0 Komadai!

Yuuki puts on the pressure even further as he takes off and steals 2nd!  Chance for Sakai to extend the lead with a base hit, but he's jammed by Hirowatari and pops out to Niguchi for the 2nd out.

What???!!  Yuuki breaks for 3rd!  It's a pitchout!!  Oota goes to 3rd, but Yuuki is safe! WOW.

Yasuda trying to get him in, gets the green light 3-0, but fouls off two pitches.  They go for the slider inside, but it's too far in and Yasuda doesn't bite!  That brings up #4 batter Wakamatsu!

It looks like we're going to get more going around swings and less of the high strike this game as Hirowatari's 1-0 pitch is just called a ball.

Sasaki-kantoku goes aggressive as Yasuda breaks for 2nd, but there's no throw knowing that Yuuki can come home.

Even with 1st base open now, Hirowatari goes after Wakamatsu - first with the fastball inside which he fouls off and then the curve which he too fouls off.  Another curve, another foul.

And his 7th pitch is just high and it's manrui for Komadai!!  Wasada-kantoku quickly calls time.

Kamaya now swinging the bat so far, and Hirowatari digs himself into a deep hole as his 2-1 fastball is way high!!

Oshidashi!! Kamaya doesn't go for the curveball and it's low!  Yuuki finally scores from 3rd and it's 2-0 Komadai!!

Hirowatari finally gets out of the inning when Suzuki learned nothing from the last 2 ABs, swings at the first pitch and grounds to 2nd for the 3rd out.  Still, a booming triple and Yuuki's havoc on the base paths gives Hirowatari the jitters leading to a 2-0 deficit for Souseikan!

Top 4th
Makino makes what sounds like good contact, but Yuuki doesn't have to move to catch the ball.

Onoda gets some head music when a fastball meant to be up and in goes a little too close for comfort and hits off the grip of the bat.  It still serves its purpose as the slider down and away catches the corner for Hiromi's 6th K.

Washizaki grounds to 1st.  Sakai flips to Hiromi and it's Yuuki's 2nd 1-2-3 inning.

Bottom 4th
Hirowatari looking to get back on track, puts the curve right on the outside corner to get Niiyama.  But a fastball left up to Tamaru goes back up the middle for a single, bringing up Hiromi.

Hiromi actually shows bunt and gets hit, but isn't given the dead ball.  He does lay down the bunt on the next pitch with some good bat control to move Tamaru along for Yuuki.

Hirowatari plays Yuuki carefully, not messing around in the zone for the most part.  And he wins the battle as Yuuki is way ahead of the curve and grounds to Onoda for the 3rd out.

Top 5th
Euchidani gives Souseikan their first hit!  He turns on a fastball right at Suzuki who can't go to his right quickly enough as it deflects into foul territory.

But Mine can't bunt him along and instead pops up to Niiyama instead!

Wasada-kantoku goes for the hit-and-run and Oota tries to pull the ball but it's right at Suzuki who this time secures it and goes to 1st.

Sanshin!  Hiromi's slider gets another one as Hirowatari can't make contact and becomes the 7th K!

Bottom 5th
Hirowatari with just his 2nd K as Sakai gets all twisted on a forkball inside.

Yasuda likes the first offering and hits it back up the middle, but Hirowatari makes a nice pick off the ground and gets his 2nd out.

He almost gets a clean inning, but Onoda sees Wakamatsu's grounder into, and out of, his glove.  He chases it down towards 2nd, but has no play.

That has immediate effects as Kamaya singles sharply through the right side for a base hit, prompting a mound visit from Wasada-kantoku.

Which then leads to a wild pitch from Hirowatari moving both runners into scoring position...

Even still, he gets ahead of Suzuki 1-2 and almost makes him miss on the forkball.

But instead of a slider outside, he leaves it over the plate and Suzuki takes it past a diving Onoda for a base hit!  Onoda's error comes back to haunt him as Komadai takes a 3-0 lead!

Sasaki-kantoku, looking to play add on, goes for the hit-and-run, but Niiyama grounds right to Onoda.  This time he finishes the play to retire the side.

But it's apparent that Komadai is having the upper hand and Souseikan's offense really is that bad...

Top 6th
3 runs in 4 innings doesn't seem too bad one would think.  But Souseikan's managed just 2 hits...

Hiromi racking up the pitches as Haraguchi and Nogichi go 3-1 before grounding out.

Oddly, after 2 clean outs, Sasaki-kantoku calls time?  Wonder what for other than Makino is coming up...

Perhaps it was to tell him to go after him with the 3 run lead.  Seems to work as he gets Makino to get ahead of a slider and fly out to Wakamatsu in left center for the 3rd out!

Bottom 6th
One down, and apparently Yuuki's first AB is a fluke as he goes golfing on a curve inside and flies out to Mine.  Same goes for Yuuki as outside of the 3rd inning he's been silent.  He flies out to center for a clean inning.

Top 7th
Onoda avoids the K, but gets fooled when Hiromi goes top shelf back-to-back and grounds back to Hiromi for the out.

Washizaki makes contact, but not off the sweet spot and it's a lazy fly to right.

Yuuki misses his fastball over the place, but Euchidani can't take advanage, popping up to Suzuki to retire the side.

Bottom 7th
#9 Kawajiri comes in for Mine and takes over in RF.

Hirowatari using the slow curve more here in the late innings, sets up Sakai on the slider outside for the K.

Yasuda flies out to left, and after a bit of a stubborn AB by Wakamatsu he gets the comebacker for the 3rd out.  2nd straight 1-2-3 inning, but the the offense needs to step up.

Top 8th
Mine can't break the futility at the plate, as he goes on a high fastball and grounds it to Yasuda.

Two down and Hirowatari's day is done.  #4 Nakashima comes in to bat for him.  He hits a hard grounder to short, but Suzuki secures it and makes the play for the 3rd out.

Bottom 8th
#10 Tachibe comes into the game for PH Nakashima and takes the hill.

Tachibe throws in the high 130s, but control is a bit of an issue.  Still, he hits a grounder to 2nd, but Euchidani with all the time in the world throws it away!  Wasada-kantoku calls for time.  Suzuki lays down the bunt to move him along.

Souseikan almost commits another error when Niiyama's grounder up the middle is bobbled by Makino, but Niiyama gives him an assist by diving into 1st.

Tachibe's long inning ends when Tamaru weakly grounds to Noguchi for the out.

Top 9th
Last ups for Souseikan who have a grand total of 2 hits on the day...

Noguchi makes it 3 hits when he turns a 3-2 fastball to right center for a 1-out single.

But Makino hits it right to Suzuki!  He snocones it, but holds on and starts the game ending 5-4-3 double play!

Well, I knew that Souseikan's offense was probably not great, but I wasn't expecting just 3 hits.  Limited to that it didn't really matter what Hirowatari did, never mind that he too struggled on the mound.  But, give credit to Itou Harumi, he did a fine job on the mound stifling what little offense Souseikan had not to mention throwing in a triple to boot.

But Komadai Tomakomai will have their work cut out for them in Riseisha next.

Notable Players

32 teams in 32 days - Komadai Tomakomai (Hokkaido)

Komadai Tomakomai was given a "gift" by departing alumni Tanaka Masahiro.  For the first time in 9 years they will return to Haru Koushien.

Hokkaido has missed Komadai as they were the only team to have successfully claimed a Koushien title - all thanks to the aforementioned Ma-kun. Teams have come and gone, but none have been able to replicate their efforts.

So now Komadai returns once again to perhaps find that spark:

Road to Senbatsu
Muroran Regionals
  • def. Noboribetsu Seiryou 5-2
  • def. Muroran Shimizugaoka 8-0 (8 inn)
  • def. Ootani Muroran 11-0 (5 inn)
  • def. Hokkaido Sakae 2-1
 Super-Regionals
  • def. Kushiro Meiki 8-0 (7 inn)
  • def. Asahikawadai 8-5
  • def. Toukai Dai-yon 1-0 (12 inn)
  • def. Sapporo Ootani 3-2
Meiji Jingu
  • lost Okinawa Shougaku 5-3
Their body of work unfortunately does not inspire confidence. With Hokkaido already considered a weak prefecture in the world of 高校野球, having 3 1-run games - even against tougher competition in-prefecture, do not point to success.

Interestingly, while Itou Harumi(?) (伊藤 大海) seems to get quite a bit of work, he wore #15 for Komadai.  Perhaps it's because he's a rookie.  Anyways, he's reported to throw in the low 130s with the normal slider and curve.

And he's got a video of his own while ace # Kikuchi Shouta (菊地 翔太) does not. Go figure. The best I can figure is this digest video of their Meiji Jingu game against Okinawa Shougaku.

Offensively, it looks like 2B Yasuda Daisuke (安田 大将) is the main generator of power for the team. Somehow, I'm reminded of Honma Atsushi of way back when.

Perhaps the only other person offensively noteworthy is leadoff batter CF Itou Yuuki (伊藤 優希) who is a quick leadoff batter.

Considering that they played Okinawa Shougaku close despite falling behind early 3-0, they might have a chance for a game or two, but not much more.

Next up... Hachinohe Gakuin Kousei!

44th Meiji Jingu Tournament - We have a champion!

So we have a champion, and perhaps in doing so endorses one of my theories about the urban super-regionals not perhaps trying as hard...

Day 3
Ryuuokudai Heian's ace Inudzuka couldn't get past the 2nd inning as he failed to record an out giving up 5 runs in the 3rd to Nihon Bunri which included a solo HR by opposing pitcher Iidzuka.  That erased an 2-0 early lead and forced Heian to chase.

That they did though as a sac fly in the 4th, followed by timely doubles from Ootani and Kawai in the 5th tied the game at 5-5!

But already on their 3rd pitcher, Tanaka was asked to go in long relief.  However, in the 7th Kodachi delivered a double to push ahead what would be the eventual winning run to end Kinki's hopes of having a 2nd bid!

The second game between Komadai Tomakomai and Okinawa Shougaku was marred by errors.  So much so that in a game that wound up 5-3, only 1 run was earned!!

In the 1st, a throwing error by 3B Tamaru with 2 outs continued the inning, and it was punished by Okishou with hits from Irabu and Fuchigami for a 3-0 lead.  Fuchigami would feel bad about scoring on the error, so he had one of his own in the top of the 2nd allowing Komadai to take 1 back.

That run would be given back to Okishou as in the 3rd SS Ogasawara would make an error of his own to make it 4-1.  Akamine Ken would get the only RBI of the game as he would get a hit to center extending the lead to 5-1.

More errors would get Komadai within 2 in the 8th, but that would be the closest they would get in the mistake-filled game.

Day 4
Day 4 was anti-climactic for semifinal matches.  Imabari Nishi and Nihon Bunri trade a run in each of the first 2 innings, but then after a run in the 3rd, Nihon Bunri blows up for 4 runs in the 4th.  Errors did not help Imabari's cause either has eventually would be mercy-ruled 10-3 in 7 innings.

It was worse for Iwakuni.  Errors put them behind 2-0 early, as Okinawa Shougaku put up runs in every inning culminating in back-to-back-to-back doubles in a 7-run 4th.  The game would only last 4.5 innings as Okishou mercy-ruled Iwakuni 11-1.

Day 5 - Championship
Nihon Bunri had the opportunity to be the first Hokushinetsu representative to win the Meiji Jingu tournament since Seiryou in 1991.  More importantly, it would mean a bid in all likelihood for Chikyuu Kankyou.

Okinawa Shougaku was looking to give Kyushu their 4th title and 1st since Yanagigaura back in 2004.  Chinzei would be able to breathe a sigh of relief as their main competitor for the final bid in Souseikan would be given the Meiji Jingu bid.

And it was one of those game you just couldn't believe, even if we told you...

Hoshi starts the game off for Nihon Bunri with a leadoff HR to right.  In the 3rd, Kamakura would hit a 2-out solo HR to left, making it 2-0!  Ace Iidzuka would blast his 2nd of the tournament to right in the 4th, extending it to 3-0!

Higa-kantoku tried to stop the bleeding as he sent in Kubo from RF to switch places with ace Yamashiro Daichi, but the power output didn't stop there. In the 5th, back-to-back doubles by Kobayashi and Kamakura were paid off by Yamaguchi's 2-run double of his own.  Even a failed send home of Yamaguchi didn't stop the inning as Iidzuka would his 2nd HR of the game to center making it a 7-0 game!!!

And cleanup batter Ikeda had had enough of everyone else going yard, and blasted one to left in the 6th giving Nihon Bunri a commanding 8-0 lead!!

Facing elimination in the bottom of the 7th, Okinawa Shougaku went to work - and made this already crazy game into a comeback for the ages.

With one down, Iidzuka would plunk Irabu.  Kaneshiro would hit for Fuchigami and hit a double to right.

And that's when ace Yamashiro Daichi (yes, he returned to the mound in the 7th) would keep his team alive with a 3-run HR to left center!  While the next 2 batters would be retired, Okishou was still in the game at 8-3...

Now the 8th inning.  Kubo starts it off with a triple to right.  Nishihira plates him with a single to center... 8-4.

Anzato booms a 2-run HR to left-center... It's now 8-6.  And still Ooi-kantoku doesn't send in someone like Kodachi, or last game's starter Fujita, instead sticking with ace Iidzuka...

Uehara flies out to right for the first out, but Irabu singles to left.  Now with 2 out, Yamashiro Daichi singles to left.

The inning looks to be over after Sunagawa hits one back to Iidzuka, but something goes horribly wrong and he throws it away allowing Irabu to score making it 8-7...

With Ooi-kantoku leaving Iidzuka on the mound even still, it sealed Nihon Bunri's fate.  He would walk Akamine Ken, sending up Kubo for his 2nd AB of the inning.

And he wouldn't miss.  Kubo would hit one to right, scoring both Daichi and Ken to complete the comeback. 9-8.  In a minor way, Okinawa Shougaku did what Nihon Bunri couldn't do in 2009.  (Sorry Nihon Bunri, but while I like you, until you can win a big game final, it will always come back to that game...)

So, with Okinawa Shougaku's victory Chinzei can rest easy.  With the Meiji Jingu bid, Souseikan will be invited and Chinzei can hold onto their last Kyushu bid (or technically vice versa).  Sadly for Chikyuu Kankyou, Nihon Bunri's collapse means that they will be on the sidelines watching senbatsu from home...

86th Haru Koushien - First ticket punched!

And that ticket goes to the Hokkaido Super-Regional champion...

...Komadai Tomakomai!

Yes, they will return to haru koushien for the first time in 8 years.  After advancing past the first two rounds without trouble against Kushiro Meiki and Asahikawadai, they were snared in a low-scoring affair against Toukai Dai-yon - a very strong C level team in the semifinals.  12 innings later and they finally got to Toukai ace Nishijima to score the only run in the game moving them into the finals.

With schools like Hakodatedai Yuuto and Hokushou on the same side of the bracket and eliminated early, there was little competition left it would seem.  But Shirakaba Gakuen drew the other half of the bracket and would appear to be on a collision course for a powerhouse final.

Indeed, after 2 mercy rule wins over Bushuukan and Hakodate Shougyou, then a shutout of Tomakomai Chuo, they were just one game away from that matchup.  Standing in the way was an unknown Sapporo Ootani squad whose only notable win was their first game in a 6-4 win over Kitami Hokuto.

And yet when the final horn sounded, Ootani 1st year ace Okamoto Rinden (岡本 凛典) had pitched a complete game shutout and upset the favorites 4-0 and now were one game away from punching their own ticket to not only the Meiji Jingu tournament, but to Haru Koushien!

In the final, Okamoto gave Komadai Tomakomai all they could handle, keeping his underdog team in the game long enough to allow his offense to tie it up in the top of the 8th.

But a costly error allowed the go-ahead run to reach 3rd base for Komadai, and with one out and runners at the corners, Niiyama would hit the sac fly to left regaining the lead at 3-2 as reliever Itou closed it out for the victory.

So Komadai Tomakomai will head down to Tokyo and more importantly will be headed to Haru Koushien.  I don't think this is the last we'll see of Sapporo Ootani either.

Other taikais are underway, and I'll have those updates in the next couple of days.
