86th Senbatsu - Day 7 - Game 1 - Ikeda (Tokushima) vs. Toyokawa (Aichi)

Well, start the final day of the first full week of action with what on paper looks like a complete mismatch.

Ikeda had been stymied by 21st century Kainan for the first part of the game.  But in the final 2 innings their spot starter Kanzaki, who was pressed into service a week ago when their ace injured their hand, was extended beyond his limits and could not close out the game.  A pair of runs in the 8th and 9th meant that Ikeda was able to advance to the 2nd round.

Toyokawa had a blockbuster 1st round matchup that in an ideal world should have been a semifinal or final matchup.  And for the first timers, ace Tanaka Sora went toe to to with Nihon Bunri, and found a counter punch whenever Nihon Bunri scored.  They staved off elimination twice before winning in 13 innings.

With all that said, if Ikeda's offense struggled against relief starter Kanzaki, it will be even worse against Tanaka Sora.  God speed to you Ikeda, you may be heading home after this.

09:03 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Two well located balls and Satou behind 0-2.  Satou the fighter, fouls off a couple of pitches.  But Tanaka pulls out the splitter and that's his first K.

Takai with a drive to right!  Takeichi running back to the foul pole, and it's foul!

And now Tanaka with the slider away gets his 2nd K.

Miyake avoids 3 straight Ks, but grounds the first pitch back to Tanaka for the 3rd out.

Bottom 1st
Already problems for Ikeda as Jyoutoku slips on the grass fielding Nakamura's popup and it falls in for a base hit.  Sugiuchi bunts him along.

Hm... Nanishi early getting a lot of towering popups.  Himi hits such a ball and Okamoto catches it near the Toyokawa dugout for the 2nd out.

More problems for Jyoutoku.  He's shielded somewhat by the runner Nakamura, but he can't field the grounder by Takakuwa and Toyokawa is already threatening.

He's bailed out when Ren grounds a ball to 3rd.  Okamoto throws to 1st, and Kimura makes a good pick off the bounce for the 3rd out.

Top 2nd
Tanaka playing it unexpectedly safe against Okamoto, winds up issuing the leadoff walk.  Kimura follows with obligatory bunt.

Kita makes decent contact, or so I though until Yamada has to come in quite a bit to make the catch.

Hosoda with a ball to deep center, Sugiura ranging to his left, stretches out... and makes the catch!  That saves a run for Toyokawa!

Bottom 2nd
Toyokawa still struggling to find solid contact against Nanishi.  Takeishi grounds to 1st, and while Yamada hits a flyball to left, Hosoda is there for the catch.

But Nanishi can't get the clean inning after he walks Tanaka on 4 straight.

Shima follows that up with a crisp liner to left and Toyokawa has something brewing here.

I guess I spoke too soon about Nanishi.  Nakamura with a drive to right center.  That goes all the way to the wall and both runners will come in to score.  It's a 2 RBI triple and Toyokawa opens the scoring at 2-0. That brings a timeout from Okada-kantoku.

But Sugiura connects on a ball and send that down the left field side for a double to make it 3-0.  Himi with a single scores Sugiura and just like that it's 4-0.  Takakuwa flies to center to end the inning, but as expected Toyokawa jumps on Ikeda.

Top 3rd
Nanishi catches a break when his comebacker is deflected by Tanaka to the left side, forcing Takakuwa to go back to field it.  That allows Nanishi to reach base.

Jyoutoku tries to bunt the runner over, but pushes both attempts foul.

But before that, Nanishi is caught sleeping at 1st, and is way too late in getting back to the bag.  1 out.

Which becomes a shame because Jyoutoku draws a walk.

And then is caught off 1st too!  Boy Jyoutoku looked bad there too.

Throw in a groundout by Masahiro and that's a definitive case of getting in your own way.

Bottom 3rd
Nanishi gets his first K of the game when Ren waves on the forkball.

2 down, and Nanishi's defense is completely failing him.  Yamada with a grounder up the middle, Jyoutoku gets there, but can't make the clean grab.  E6 and the inning continues.

Tanaka singles to right on the first pitch and could they be putting in for another big inning?

It almost looks like Shima hits the ball off the ground!  He flies out to left though and at least for now, the deficit stays at 4.

Top 4th
Ikeda making some good contact on the ball, but can't find the holes.  Takai booms one to center, but Sugiura is already back there to wait for it.

Miyake has to defend the plate on the full count, and unfortunately keeps one in play for Yamada to catch near the fence in foul territory.

Shima finishes off the inning charging a grounder from Okamoto.  He takes a couple extra steps, but crossfires back to 1st for the out.

Bottom 4th
Nakamura with his 3rd hit of the day, with a base hit to center.  He then takes off for and successfully steals 2nd!  Down 1-2 though Sugiura goes down swinging.

Nanishi retires the next 2 batters in order and he's settled down since the 2nd hoping to keep his team in it.

Top 5th
Kita gets Ikeda's second hit, a liner back up the middle that whizzes by Tanaka's glove.

Okada-kantoku tries to put on the hit-and-run, but Hosoda hits it right to Shima.  He gives it to Takakuwa who finishes the double play to end the inning.

Bottom 5th
Ren continues to struggle against Nanishi as he strikes out for the 2nd straight AB.  Takeichi also remains hitless after he skies a ball to Jyoutoku behind the bag at 2nd.

And it's Nanishi's first lean inning as Yamada pops out to Miyake near the his own on deck circle and we hit the break.  Toyokawa up as expected, but outside of the 2nd inning, Nanishi has held his own.

Top 6th
One down for Ikeda, Jyoutoku with a chopper back up the middle.  Tanaka tips it with his glove and as a result deadens the ball preventing Takakuwa from making a play on it.

Masahiro goes down on the slider for Tanaka's 5th K.

It looks like Ikeda might leave a runner stranded again, but Takai with a solid single to the left side keeps the inning going.

Well, for one more pitch anyways.  Miyake goes after the first pitch and flies to left.  Yamada secures it and there goes another chance.

Bottom 6th
Well, Nanishi has continued to stop the Toyokawa offense.  He strikeout of Shima is bookended with two groundouts, so and he has his 2nd clean inning.

Top 7th
Sadly Ikeda continues to be unable to do anything on offense as they are retired in order.

Bottom 7th
Sugiura with a ball into the gap for a leadoff double.  That's the first big hit since the 2nd.

2 batters later, it's Takakuwa with a ball to right center!  That's down for a double, but Sugiura holds up late at 3rd!  Miyake starts the rundown, and although there's a slight hiccup they get the out.

#3 Itou hits for Ren, but fares no better in the spot grounding out to 3rd.

Top 8th
Itou stays in the game at 1B.

One down #11 Hayashi comes in to hit for Nanishi, and promptly puts a ball down the right field line for a double!  And then steals 3rd!

Jyoutoku absent of a base hit, chops the ball to short.  Takakuwa has only one play and Ikeda avoids the shutout. 4-1 now the margin.

#14 Oonishi hits for Masahiro, but he hits a grounder back to Tanaka to end the inning.

Bottom 8th
#10 Watanabe comes in for PH Oonishi and takes the mound.  #13 Tomikawa comes in for PH Hayashi and takes over in CF.

There's a lot of balls going off the pitchers as Takeichi has one go off the glove of Watanabe.  Once again it deflects to the left side and SS Jyoutoku has no chances as he has to backtrack to the ball. Tanaka advances him another 90 feet with a deep fly to center.

Shima though flies out to shallow left, but his team is just 3 outs away from advancing.

Top 9th
Takai tries to get the offense started, but he's way in front of a slider and flies out to right.  Miyake gets a green light on a 3-0 count, but he grounds one back to Tanaka.  And Okamoto ends the game with a flyout to center.

Toyokawa not as dominating offensively as I was expecting, with most of their hits coming in that 2nd inning.  Tanaka was pretty much on his game from the get go and never let Ikeda get back in the game.  He gave up the shutout, but nothing else.

Ikeda can at least say that after a long time away they still won a game.  But it'll take some work for Okada-kantoku to bring the school back to their olden days.

Toyokawa meanwhile moves on in their first go at Koushien.  They do look like a contender, but the offense is bit of a concern.

Side note: Imai-kantoku had played against the Yamabiko Ikeda teams of old and lost.  So this is said to be his revenge as a manager.  Sort of.

86th Senbatsu - Day 2 - Game 2 - Kainan (Wakayama) vs. Ikeda (Tokushima)

It's a regional matchup for our sandwich game as Ikeda returns after a long respite to face the wild-card 21st century squad of Kainan.

As mentioned before, Ikeda this time around is not like the team of old as their offense is quite the opposite.  It'll help that they face a 21st century school, though I guess to an extent Kainan could easily say the same for Ikeda...

11:33 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Kainan in their forest green unis quickly get Nanishi going as Fukuda and Akiyama go out on 3 pitches total.  Sakaguchi is much more patient as draws the walk.

So is #4 batter Yasu, and Morimoto-kantoku sends Sakaguchi on the 2-2 pitch.  He gets a free pass as the ball is buried and Miyake has no throw.

However, Yasu grounds to short and Jyoutoku makes the play at 1st to end the inning.

Bottom 1st
Kanzaki gets the start, and quickly makes work of Satou and Takai.  But like his counterpart, Miyake works the count full and he gets on base thanks to a hard hit that Fukuda can't quite smother.

But Kanzaki gets himself in more trouble as he walks Okamoto on 4 straight.  Not quite the start you're looking for.

However, despite going 3-1 on Kimura, he gets him to chase a fastball inside and hits a comebacker to Kanzaki to end the inning.

Top 2nd
Nanishi doesn't throw very hard, low 130s.

Takeda with a drive to left, Hosoda running back to the left field foul pole... Makes the catch as he meets the wall!  Nice play from the Ikeda LF!

Nanishi lives on the bottom of the strike zone apparently leading to very close pitches - and deep counts.

Oota gets the count full, but succumbs to the biting slider.  In addition to that (high 110s) he has the slow curve in the 90s.

Hayashi just so happens to go after a ball up and in, and grounds it back up the middle.  Nanishi lets his defense take care of it as Takai charges in and makes the throw to 1st to retire the side.

Bottom 2nd
That's quick.  Ikeda isn't the Yamabiko of old, but they're swinging like it.  Kita and Hosoda on the first pitch quickly retire themselves.

And Nanishi winds up watching the slider go over for strike 3 and it's a quick inning from Kanzaki.

Top 3rd
He turns around and steps in for his first AB.  Kainan has some good different ouen music. Kainan has a small section in white with the green K.

Kanzaki delivers their first hit, taking the outside offering left up by Nanishi into center.  Ikeshita showing bunt pushes the first one foul.  He pops another one foul and now has to swing away.

Or so I thought.  He shows bunt as Nanishi delivers and lays it down.

Ama-chan!  It's not a bad rendition either.

Back to the top of the lineup and Fukuda gives the ball a ride, but right to Satou... 2 down.

Akiyama grounds to short and that ends Kainan's small chance here in the 3rd.

Bottom 3rd
Kanzaki throws slower than average (mid-uppper 120s) with a slider in the 110s and slow curve in the 90s with so-so control.

Jyoutoku with a ball up the 3rd base line, Ikeshita with a good stop and throw for the out.  A pitch later Satou goes down and lifts a slider to Takeda.

And Akiyama makes a great running grab on a Takai grounder up the middle and finishes the throw to 1st to retire the side!

Top 4th
Sakaguchi just a little ahead and under a fastball and he flies out to right.  Yasu rolls over a ball to short, Jyoutoku makes the hard throw to just beat Yasu.

Takeda goes down and lines a fastball left up to left center.   He goes for 2 on the short ball!  The throw is offline and he's in with a double!

Oota with a hard hit at Okamoto!  He blocks it, picks it up and fires to 1st for the 3rd out!

Bottom 4th
Miyake connects on a slow curve, but is just ahead of it and lazily flies out to center.

Ikeshita is playing in it would seem and Okamoto's grounder is no problem for him for the 2nd out.

And Kimura flies out to center for another clean frame from the relief starter.

Top 5th
If it seems like I'm just reporting the outs, it's because I am.  Neither pitching is particularly wowing me with their effort on the mound, and the batters don't seem to be able to drive the ball deep either, so we're prolly working with singles for the most part.

Also, it looks like we have an umpire who will check for the check swings instead of calling it himself (which is nice sometimes).

Meanwhile, Nanishi misses just enough to walk Hayashi to lead off the inning.  Kanzaki lays down the bunt, and Nanishi almost throws it too high for Kimura to field.

Ikeshita looking for the safety bunt might have had it had it not gone foul.  Nanishi going to the outside corner time and time again forces Ikeshita to defend that bit.  Fastball down and outside though fills up the count.

And it's ball 4!  Hayashi takes off for 3rd??!!  Miyake fires to 3rd and easily gets Hayashi for the 2nd out!

Morimoto-kantoku will not lift off the gas though as he has Ikeshita steal 2nd!  The ball is in the dirt and there's no throw.  Though, stealing 2nd is much different than stealing 3rd...

Fukuda walks anyway, so the SB it kinda moot.

Akiyama jammed, but the ball goes into center!  Satou has no chance at it as Ikeshita is waved around!  Satou drops the ball and Ikeshita easily scores to make it 1-0 Kainan!

Okada-kantoku calls time to settle down his team.

Sakaguchi with a shot right at Takai!  He somehow makes the pick and goes to 1st to retire the side!  Don't know how he did it, but Nanishi is glad he did!

Bottom 5th
Timing Kanzaki's fastball leaves Kita ahead of Kanzaki's slider as he grounds to 2nd.  Hosoda is jammed on the first pitch and pops out to Akiyama in shallow left, while a pitch later Nanishi his a soft fly to Sakaguchi to end the inning and send us to the break!

And perhaps not surprisingly neither team can make a whole lot of offense as the teams combined have 4 hits and the run by Kainan was thanks to 2 prior walks.  The pitching isn't all that impressive either, but it's doing the job for the most part.

Top 6th
Yasu drives a ball to deep right, but it hangs up and allows Kita to run it down.

But Nanishi puts a runner on base as he hits Takeda.  Oota lays down the bunt, and Nanishi panics when the ball doesn't roll foul!  He shovels it to 1st, but puts nothing on it!  Everyone's safe as the ball slowly bounces to Kimura!

Chance for Kainan to add on, but it quickly disappears when Hayashi reaches out and hits a slow grounder back to Nanishi!  He turns the 1-6-3 double play to end the inning!

Bottom 6th
It's the Akiyama show it appears this inning.  Jyoutoku with a ball to the gap in the left side, Akiyama runs it down, stops spins and makes the strong throw to 1st for the out!

Then Satou tests him to his left with a ball up the middle.  Akiyama says, "No problem" as he runs it down near 2nd and makes another great throw to 1st.

Ikeshita gets in on the act as Takai his a bounding grounder to him.  He makes the strong throw across the mound for the 3rd out.

Top 7th
Meanwhile Kainan goes back to struggling at the plate.  Kanzaki with a grounder to 2nd, and Ikeshita swinging and missing on the slider.

Of course I say that and Fukuda singles to left center.  And then steals 2nd on the very first pitch!

Akiyama does it again!  He bloops a ball into shallow center again!  Fukuda breaking for home as the throw is way up the 3rd base line! It's 2-0 Kainan!!

Morimoto-kantoku going for it all as Akiyama takes off for 2nd now!  Miyake drops the ball and there's no throw!

Things go from bad to worse when Nanishi walks Sakaguchi on 4 straight prompting a mound visit from Okada-kantoku.

And Yasu connects with a ball outside, pulling and dropping it down the left field line!  Hosoda charging in goes to 3rd and Akiyama scores to make it 3-0 Kainan!

Takeda flies out to left, but Ikeda is in a world of trouble.

Bottom 7th
Ikeda finally get their first runner since the 1st as Miyake draws the walk.  Morimoto-kantoku calls time.

Okamoto attcks a slow curve from Kanzaki and chops one to 3rd!  Ikeshita, playing in, makes the tricky grab and wheels the 5-4-3 double play!  Tough break for Ikeda!

Kimra flies out to right and can Kainan get a victory as the 21st century team?

Top 8th
Nanishi might be on his last legs as #10 Watanabe warms up in the bullpen. Still, despite a 3-1 count he induces a groundout from Oota.

Despite losing a couple kph on the fastball, Nanishi retires the next 2 batters in order and keeps the deficit at 3.

Bottom 8th
Ikeda's ouen-dan in full voice as the team faces elimination with just 6 outs to give.

Finally some life!  Kita takes the hanging fastball to right center for a double!  Okada-kantoku wastes no time, sending in #12 Fujita to run for Kita, and #11 Hayashi to hit for Hosoda.

But Hayashi is in to bunt?  You're down 3!  He fouls off the first attempt.

And now we know why!!  He puts down a great bunt down the 3rd base side and flies down the line!  Ikeshita's throw not nearly in time!

Morimoto-kantoku calling time, sending ace number Okamoto out, broken hand and all (that's why Kanzaki is starting!).

But Nanishi has none of it!  He bloops one of his own to right scoring Fujita and making it a 3-1 game!  And still nobody out!

Kanzaki laboring, falling behind Jyoutoku 2-1, and after a strike buries one to fall behind 3-1!!

Ball 4!  His pitch is high and it's manrui for the top of the lineup!  Another timeout by Morimoto-kantoku as I don't think Kainan will go to the bench!

Ikeda does as #14 Oonishi hits for Satou.  But Oonishi never swings the bat as Kanzaki puts 3 pitches in the zone to strike out Oonishi!  1 down!

Takai first pitch hits one to the left side..  it gets by both Ikeshita and Akiyama as Hayashi scores to make it a 3-2 ballgame!!  Oh, Kanzaki looks to be in a world of trouble!

Miyake with a ball back up the middle!! Akiyama with a spectacular diving stop by the bag at 2nd!  He tags the bag, throws to 1st... DOUBLE PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Akiyama the lifesaver yet again turning the double play to end the inning and hold the lead for Kainan!!

Top 9th
Fujita stays in the game to play RF, Hayashi to play LF, and #13 Tomiyama comes in for PF Oonishi to take over in CF.

Emboldened by the turn of events, Nanaishi turns it up a notch.  He quickly retires both Ikeshita and Fukuda, and when Akiyama proves stubborn at the plate, he freezes him with the slider to retire the side!!

Bottom 9th
Now, can Kanzaki hold on here in the 9th?

Okamoto immediately putting pressure as he lines a ball to right for a leadoff single!

Grounder to short by Kimura and AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Akiyama, who had been dependable the entire game is a little too quick on the fielding in anticipation of the DP and picks up the glove too early letting the ball sneak under!!  All safe!!

Oh, things are turning bad for them now.

Fujita with the bunt!  Kanzaki quick to the ball, but he rushes his throw knowing Fujita's speed and overthrows the bag!  Sakaguchi backs it up, but it's manrui with no out!  Has Kainan got nothing left?

Hayashi with the ball back up the middle!  Akiyama playing in can't handle the hop and it bounces into center!  Okamoto scores!  Kimura comes around... he scores!!!  サヨナラ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, how heartbreaking for Kainan having dominated Ikeda for 7 innings, Kanzaki just runs out of gas, and Akiyama who had carried the team can't make the final play when called to...

Ikeda puts together the hits necessary in the end when it mattered to come back from down 3-0 to win 4-3 and advance to the next round...

This game I think I'll let breathe...

...

Ok, I can't.  Kanzaki had done so well for 7 innings but was asked to go the full 9 and just ran out of gas.  With Okamoto hurt, only Takeda supposedly remained in relief.  But it was obvious that Kanzaki would have to finish it, and he just couldn't.  You have to feel bad for him...

32 teams in 32 days - Ikeda (Kochi)

It has been a while Ikeda.  From a school that teams feared in the 80s and early 90s they went into anonymity.  In recent years, they have made attempts to return to Koushien, and have gotten very close.  This past fall though they finally broke through to receive an invitation from the JHBF.  Welcome back to Koushien Ikeda, the kokoyakyu world has missed you...

Road to Senbatsu
Tokushima Prefecturals
  • def. Jyousei 7-0 (7 inn)
  • def. Naruto 10-5 (12 inn)
  • lost Seikou Gakuen 3-2
  • def. Kaifu 6-0
Shikoku Super-Regionals
Now, remembering what I have been saying regarding Ikeda and working slowly to break through.  In some ways it is represented here in their record.  The win against Naruto does count for something, but note that it was a 5-5 tie going into enchousen.  And with kantoku Okada Yasushi (岡田 康志) sending out reliever Watanabe Kouji (渡邉 剛志) first again, Seikou Gakuen would jump out to a 3-0 lead that they couldn't recover from.

Facing elimination, ace Nanishi Hiroto (名西 宥人) would take the hill, and proceeded to throw a no-hitter against Kaifu to send his team to the super-regionals.  Certainly just a win was needed, but perhaps he just wanted to make sure they advanced.

With only a championship guaranteeing a slot at senbatsu, Nanishi would be sent out.  He started out with a 2 R, 9 K effort against Kochi Higashi Kougyou, then had to hold Saijyou at bay while his own offense struggled scattering 10 hits over 11 innings, and then revenged the matchup against Seikou Gakuen going from start to finish, giving up 3 runs but striking out 8.  And then in the finals, Nanishi went 6 solid innings giving up just 1 run.  But when Watanabe entered the game, Imabari would go on the offensive scoring 5 runs on just 1 out.  Hosoda would come in and give up 4 more as Imabari pulled away for the title.  Nonetheless, Ikeda had done more than enough to receive an invitation for the spring.

For Nanishi, he throws in the mid 130s with a slider and sinker (which might explain some of the K results he got).  I don't have individual videos of him though, which is strange.  Given the results of the other pitchers for Ikeda though, I think Nanishi will be it.  If he falters, Ikeda is pretty much done.

Offensively, probably the most consistent player is cleanup batter 3B Okamoto Shouya (岡本 昌也).  Other than him you can perhaps look at OF Kita Masashi (喜多 正史).  But it's pretty much station-to-station.

I am not sure why Nanishi was relieved in the title game, but I would assume that he will be going for as long as his arm will let him come March.  There is not a large sample size for him and how he will do against tougher competition, but if he can handle a potential title contender, then they might be able to make a decent run.

Next up, can ace Kishi carry the burden now for Meitoku Gijyuku?

86th Haru Koushien - Shikoku champ determined!

The semifinal games were surprisingly not close. First, Kishi wound up giving up a 4-run 4th to Imabari Nishi (Ehime 2) as Meitoku Gijyuku (Kochi 1) couldn't muster any offense losing 4-0.

On the other side, Ikeda's (Tokushima 3) offense gave Myouzai a game off as they scored early and often to defeat Seikou Gakuen (Tokushima 1) 9-3.

Perhaps though, Ikeda should have actually given Myouzai some time off because he was pulled after 6 innings trailing 1-0 to Imabari Nishi. The bullpen would give up 9 runs thereafter as Imabari Nishi claims their 5th title and first in 4 years!

Despite the loss, I do expect Ikeda to receive an invite, given they were a powerhouse in the 1980's and are seemingly experiencing a renaissance. It's not a 100% guarantee, but it looks fairly good.

The fact that Meitoku Gijyuku lost because of one inning probably bumps out Seikou Gakuen from consideration for the floating bid. It also makes things very tough for the Chuugoku region too to put up a team that could compete with them for the bid.
