09:30 - First Pitch!

Both teams going with different pitchers to start the game. Probably in an attempt to save the arms for the home stretch should they get there. Also given who they may be drawing into, beating the other team with as much 2nd tier stuff is desirable.

But in a game like this where neither team is all that great, it really boils down to execution. The team who minimizes mistakes wins. Not like the powerhouse teams where there is some room for error. For these teams there usually isn't.

Judging from the starters used this seems to be the case.

And unfortunately for Nichinan Gakuen, they make the first unforced error in the 2nd inning.

It starts innocuously enough when Kinoshita singles to left. But when Shichino pops a bunt down the 1st base line, no one can get to it to catch it, and then they wait too long to see if it goes foul (which it never does).

After a sac bunt, Kurisu hits a ball to 2nd, but Maeda is anticipating the throw home and whiffs on the ball. That allows both Kinoshita and Shichino to score for a 2-0 Shiritsu Wakayama lead.

Then after a walk to the last batter Hamano (which is a cardinal sin), Kawasaki singles to right making it a 3-0 game and forcing Nichinan Gakuen to send in ace Moriyama.

It was Shiritsu Wakayama's turn to reciprocate in the 3rd.

After Ishida led of with a single, and moved to 2nd. Kurusu then could not find the strike zone at all walking both Nagahara and Yoshiga on 4 straight (and it wasn't even close). However, Nichinan was not able to bring in more than 1 run, and that was on Maeda's sac fly. 3-1.

Now obviously these teams can't execute each time they get an opportunity, but you expect them to do so at some point. And the more you get, the more likely you should be able to convert one of them into runs.

We could see this in the inning following. Shiritsu Wakayama would get a 1-out and a 2-out single from Kinoshita and Okamoto, but with 2 down they needed a hit and couldn't get one.

Nichinan Gakuen actually had a good chance in the 4th when Hagiwara had a double to left center, but was left stranded there by the following 2 batters.

Shiritsu Wakayama wasted a chance in their half of the 4th when after a leadoff hit by Hamano, Yamazaki couldn't lay down a good bunt, and when Kawasaki laid down his, it was successful, but when the ball gets dislodged in a collision, Hamano goes for 3rd and is thrown out.

That tails directly into the 5th for Nichinan Gakuen where with one down Nagahara is hit. After a flyout Kurusu seems poised to get out of the jam. However, his plan of attacking Maeda and Masuda backfires, because without pitching inside, the batters cheat on the pitch. Maeda taking it the other way and Masuda pulled over Shichino's head, both for doubles and both for an RBI tying the game at 3-3.

That's where the game would be at the break where Shiritsu Wakayama has handed the momentum to Nichinan Gakuen. In addition, Kurusu I don't believe has an answer for the middle of the lineup. Should he face them again, he'll be in trouble.

As I had hoped Shiritsu Wakayama goes to their ace Akaba. Unfortunately, he's struggling against the bottom of the lineup. Hagiwara had a routine grounder to short, but Hamano's short hop means Kitajima can't field it. After that was a single by Ishijima.

The contact play was a failure for Nichinan Gakuen as Ishijima went home and initiated the rundown. However, walking Moriyama meant the top of the lineup was definitely going to get involved.

Akaba gets a second key out when he strikes out Nagahara on an inside fastball, but once again Shiritsu Wakayama gets in their own way as Okamoto is called for catcher's interference. a run scores and it's 4-3 with Maeda coming to the plate.

And Akaba walks Maeda making it 5-3. Masuda swings over a fastball down and away to retire the side, but it really looks like they're pitching a bit scared. Almost all pitches were away.

At this point I'm seeing if there's any life in the Shiritsu Wakayama offense. If there's none in the next couple of innings, they're done.

Leadoff double by Shichino is a good start in the 6th, and a grounder gets him to 3rd. However, Akaba can't hit a ball on the outside half of the zone, and Hamano grounds out.

They get another try at it in the 7th when Yamazaki walks but after a sac bunt and a flyout there's quickly 2 down. That's when Kitajima reaches out on an outside fastball and drives it over Hamamoto's head for an RBI double making it 5-4. They're within 1, but need to continue creating opportunities for themselves to possibly convert.

However, in the 8th, after Okamato dumps a ball into left center for a hit, he tries to steal 2nd, but is thrown out by a good margin - killing the potential rally and leaving it for the 9th inning.

Now all Akaba has to do is hold serve, but Maeda-Masuda stand in first. Akaba walks Maeda again, but on the first pitch Masuda grounds into the 6-4-3 double play!

The hard part seems over, but Hamamoto singles to center.

And then to Hagiwara, who may have been forgotten, Akaba pitches one inside, but somehow that Hagiwara is able to send down the RF line for an RBI triple. 6-4 and certainly a key insurance run for Nichinan Gakuen.

And that's how the game ends as Shiritsu Wakayama goes quietly in the 9th. Nichinan Gakuen advances, and with the matchup against Hokkai, could reach the Best 8.

98th Natsu Koushien - Day 4, Game 3 - Shiritsu Wakayama (Wakayama) v Seiryou (Ishikawa)

Seiryou and Shiritsu Wakayama up next. Shiritsu Wakayama did rack up wins versus Chiben Wakayama and Minoshima, Seiryou defeated Nihon Koukuu Ishikawa, and you could throw in Komatsu Meihou and Komatsu Ootani though those are lesser victories.

Both pitching staffs are unremarkable, so it may be up to the offenses to determine the winner. In which case Seiryou (unfortunately) has the advantage.

13:50 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
That didn't take long.

Yamazaki single through left side. After a sac bunt, Teranishi walks Yabui on 4 straight.

Kitajima with a grounder up the 3rd base line fair, but it hits the umpire making the call! The ball stays in the infield and the runners have to hold up! Manrui, but 1 run could have been in!

Kinoshita remedies that immediately with a sac fly to left center. 1-0.

Shichino pops out, but this is pretty much what you should expect this game on both sides.

Bottom 1st
One down Hatenaka with a gapper to right center all the way to the wall for a triple. Toritani with a clean single through the 4 hole and we're tied at 1-1.

Akaba gets fortunate on his own when he gets a looky what I found in my glove on a hard comebacker. Almost throws it away, but gets the 1-6-3 double play.

Top 2nd
Things going from bad to worse for Teranishi.
  • A single back up the middle by Okamoto.
  • After a sac but, he throws a wild pitch, and there's a passed ball before Hamano walks.
After that Teranishi is exiled to the outfield. #17 Taketani comes in, moving Ternishi to RF and Kigura to LF.

But Yamazaki singles to left center, scoring Okamoto.

2 batters later Yabui singles to right scoring 2 more and it's 4-1 Shiritsu Wakayama.

The counter stops there... for now.

Bottom 2nd
Oh, this hurts to watch...
  • Kigura - Leadoff walk, not really close
  • Wakamiya - Single through left side
  • Sasaki - Bunt, but Akaba trips over himself fielding the ball to throw to 1st.
  • Taketani - E4 when Kawasaki can't cleanly field the ball, 4-2
  • Kawagishi - K
  • Morita - 1-2-3 DP
Yikes.

Top 3rd
Taketani still struggling with the strike zone, running two 3-ball counts, but somehow he gets 2 K's in their first clean inning.

Bottom 3rd
Hatenaka gets his 2nd hit, another base hit to right. Then with 1 down Teranishi hits a high chopper. Akaba fields it, but so was everyone else and that means no one is covering 1st. Oy.

And yet! Kigura grounds into the 4-6-3 double play to end the inning!

Top 4th
Is Taketani settling down? It's hard to say because despite the fact he gets a 1-2-3 inning, the batters are still making good contact.

Bottom 4th
I think what's happening is that the batters are seeing all these hits, errors, etc. and are thinking they can make hay. But instead they all rush to get a hit and instead get out.

2 down, Taketani hits a grounder to short, but Kitajima can't make the pick on the throw. That's hurts because Kawagishi singles to right.

And then Morita singles to left. Manrui for Seiryou.

Hatenaka hard chopper back to Akaba and he snags it! Throw to 1st and he gets out of it!

Top 5th
Kawasaki gets a leadoff hit. Once again they elect to bunt the runner over.

Kitajima checks his swing, but makes contact with the ball anyways into fair territory. 2 out.

Kinoshita gets fooled, swings at a ball way outside and flies out to right for the 3rd out.

Bottom 5th
Seiryou giving Akaba a break needing just 6 pitches to get all 3 outs. There's been 3 full innings of 0's. Chances are the break will allow the offenses to reset and we may see crooked numbers yet.

Bottom 6th
Wakamine leads off with a single to center. But when Hayashi-kantoku tries the hit and run, instead it turns into a strike-em-out throw-em-out double play! That's the 4th double play and kills the rally!

Top 7th
Hamano finally gets to Taketani with a single to center. After a sac bunt, Kawasaki rips one to the right side, but right at Kigura for the 2nd out.

Yabui comes to the rescue again, hitting another RBI single to right, making it 5-2.

Bottom 7th
Shiritsu Wakayama's defense continuing to give chances to Seiryou. One down, Kawasaki boots a grounder back up the middle. Morita reaches safely, then steals 2nd.

But Hatenaka strikes out on 3 straight, and Toritani grounds to 3rd to end the inning.

Top 8th
Things get worse for Seiryou. After a base hit by Kinoshita, Taketani is relieved by #13 Ogura.

After a sac bunt, he gives up a double to Okamoto scoring Kinoshita. 6-2.

The supposed final nail in the coffin comes when Hamano hits a ball to right and it goes under Teranishi's glove and all the way to the wall for a 1B + 3 base error. 8-2.

#11 Shimizu comes in to close the frame, but it's pretty much over now.

And so the rest of the game went. Seiryou would get a chance to score some runs in the 8th, but Shiritsu Wakayama almost turns a triple play instead.

The game mercifully ends with no more runs and Shiritsu Wakayama advancing.

Day 4, Game 2 - Nanyou Kougyou (Yamaguchi) vs. Shiritsu Wakayama (Wakayama)

Our matinee matchup could be another low scoring affair given what we've seen so far. Originally I had given Shiritsu Wakayama an edge just because of the competition faced and the fact that while Nanyou Kougyou scored a lot of runs, the slash lines were weak given the competition.

But Akashi Shougyou was a rather anemic winner, and they wound up mercy-ruled by them in the quarterfinals. Maybe if they were in the semis it could be forgiven (as they would almost certainly get a bid), but this was in the quarterfinals where nothing is guaranteed.

Now, this doesn't make Nanyou Kougyou the favorite by any stretch. The numbers for them don't impose confidence in the team (4 batters hitting under 0.250 and a pitching staff that barely Ks out 5 per 9 and BBs about 3 per 9). What it does mean is that their chances are greatly improved. Not 50-50 though, but still a fighting chance.

____________________________________________________________

11:55 - First Pitch!

Akaba for Shiritsu Wakayama has a 3/4 delivery? Doesn't look very traditional, nor does he throw very hard. Still, it's a clean start of sorts as although he gives up a soft liner to right, he's assisted by his SS Hamano who makes a diving catch on a liner and doubles off Sasabe at 1st.

Shigetomi gets his 1-2-3 inning, though while the outs themselves were not stressful, the Ichiko batters were working the counts.

Akaba one of the harder throwers, hitting 141 on the gun, though perhaps a bit all over the place as he leaves one over that Chikama lines back up the middle, and he scatters his fastballs to walk Satou. Once again, the batters still swing away and Shigetomi grounds out to short - inning over.

Shigetomi's delivery seems to lead itself to inconsistency as it looks like he's leaning at times and out of balance. Once again in the 2nd, he gets his clean frame, but the Ichiko batters are sticking to the game plan of working the count despite it resulting in 2 Ks.

Nanyou certainly having the better of it in base runners - Yoshii goes down and takes a slider the other way for a soft single. Yamasaki looked to have offered on a 2-strike ball that gets by Okamoto. Yoshii advances to 2nd, but Yamasaki is not called out.

That had the opportunity to hurt Ichikou as Yamasaki grounded to short, allowing Yoshii to reach 3rd. But with the infield playing hard in, Sasabe manages to hit one right at Kawasaki, and there was no way Yoshii could head home. And the threat is diffused when Ieiri is jammed and grounds one right to Kitajima for out number 3.

It's all a 1-sided affair in terms of getting a base hit. Chikama so far the best at seeing the ball, taking a ball the other way for a double. Though with 2 outs, it's erased on the next pitch as Satou gets jammed by Akaba.

Finally though Ichikou gets their first hit. Captiain Yamazaki takes a ball through the opposite gap for a single. Despite the single though, Shigetomi induces 2 more flyouts, and the no-hitter is gone, but not much else it seems.

The game really just feels like the Shoudoshima - Kamaishi game, the pitchers are better, but the effect is the same - a scoreless affair where teams are just looking for a run.

Shigetome threatens that in the 5th, and it's all his own doing. He walks Kitamura, then throws a wild pitch, then walks another batter, then Fujimoto in a snap throw to 2nd throws wide missing the SS and the CF. But Hamano decides to swing on a slider in the dirt, somehow makes contact (which was unfortunate) and grounded out to short. 0-0 at the break.

Nanyou gets another chance for a run when Yamazaki boots a grounder from Ieiri and compounds that with a high throw to 1st. But as bad luck would have it (or rather a TOOTBLAN), Yamaguchi lines out to 1st and Yamazaki is easily doubled off 2nd having taken off on contact.

Again, to maintain the status quo, Ichikou gives one back. Yamazaki connects with one for a double to right center. But after a bunt, Handa-kantoku calls for the contact play, and Shichino finds a drawn in Chikama. He goes home and Yamazaki is meat.

But we seem to be in a zone where the teams are trying to give each other a run. Shigetomi can't find the zone, plunking Kitajima and walking Kinoshita. Handa-kantoku sends in lucky boy #14 Oono, but he flies out to center, and well, there goes that.

Lucky 7 time, and Satou gets a break when Kawasaki charging his short chopper, makes his running throw wide and into the camera well. There's 2 down by this point so Nanyou needs a base hit. Shigetomi walks, which means it's up to #9 batter Yoshii.

And he delivers! He gets around on an inside 2 seamer and singles to left! They're waving Satou home! Oono double clutches and uncorks one high, but Okamoto comes down with it, dives at home...

OUT!!!  Okamoto makes a great play to save a run! Maybe sending the runner home wasn't the right thing, but Ichikou gets the job done!

Akaba tries to help his own cause in his lucky 7 with a base hit, but he's not helped when Hamano lays down a poor bunt, getting him forced out.

8th inning comes around and I'm pretty much frustrated. Sasabe gets a one-out single, and advances to 3rd when Kinoshita drops the ball trying to get it quickly in. Runners at the corners, and Yamazaki-kantoku calls for the contact play. But, like the other one, Yamaguchi finds Kawasaki who goes home where Sasabe is, not surprisingly, out.

That effectively kills that rally as Fujimoto grounds out to short thereafter.

Ichikou gets another shot at it as Shigetomi issues another free pass. He's bunted to 2nd (of course). But while Kitajima gets a hold of one, it dies in front of the track for the 2nd out.

Kinoshita with a rip shot up the 1st base side, but Chikama makes the diving stop! Goes to the bag for the 3rd out! Might have saved a run there!

The top of the 9th though is where I get frustrated, and this goes back to when I thought Osaka Touin had called for an appeal on a play just to throw off Mie in the final.

Chikama gets awarded on a dead ball but on the helmet to start the inning. But on the replay the ball doesn't look like it changed direction. The umpire didn't even check the helmet - though his teammates did in the dugout with a laugh.

Compounding that, Satou claims to get hit in the foot and is awarded 1st. There is no replay, but on first glance I didn't see the ball change direction there either. But I'm not as sure about that.

It all comes to a head right after because on Shigetomi's sac bunt, Akaba goes to 3rd and throws it away. Chikama scores to make it 1-0, and after that it all goes to hell. I'm not going to go through it because I think Ichikou may be been as pissed about it as I was. In the end it was 6 runs.

No way Ichikou comes back from that. And I'm done here.

Reviewing the field - Shiritsu Wakayama (Wakayama)

This is what I don't understand about Shiritsu Wakayama getting the bid. Somehow they got a direct path to the 2nd stage of the Wakayama fall prefecturals - which I don't understand because they didn't do all that well prior. Yet they won their 3 games against below-average competition to win the Wakayama prefecturals, defeated a Heijyou squad that was less than spectacular, and was run over by Akashi Shougyou once they had to relieve Akaba Riku (赤羽 陸).

And that's a problem, because in all their games, Akaba never went the full 9. Instead Kurisu Takumi (栗栖 拓巳), who had been the ace, would enter the game.

Even weirder, it's Akaba that has more information than Kurisu (though it's still very little). Reports have him hitting 140, but it's probably more like mid 130s. I know he has a slider, but not much else. Neither he nor Kurisu strikes out a lot of batters, and both are prone to give up walks. This does not make for a good combination.

Offensively the team is even harder to project. They didn't face a quality team at all in their 5 games in the fall, most ended in blowouts, but in their final game they were limited to just 3 hits against an Akashi Shougyou team whose pitching doesn't grade out well - all of which proves to be problematic. You could point to the middle of the order, as the 3-4-5 hitters of CF Shichino Ryou(?) (七野 怜), 1B Kitajima Ryou (北嶋 稜), and RF Kinoshita Kouji (木下 康司). But on the overall, the prospects for Shiritsu Wakayama to make a run of any kind seems rather dim.

Day 3, Game 2 - Kanoya Chuo (Kagoshima) v. Shiritsu Wakayama (Wakayama)

Kanoya Chuo's signature win came when it really mattered, a 3-1 victory over Kamimura Gakuen which I was luckily able to watch.  A lot of that was because of ace Nanashima Takuya.

Chiben Wakayama's grip on Wakayama prefecture may be nearing an end.  Last year they couldn't even get out of the round of 16, then this year Shiritsu Wakayama - perhaps with more confidence then usual given last year's result went toe-to-toe, staving off elimination in enchousen before winning in 12 innings.  That meant that Chiben failed to reach Koushien for the 2nd straight year, and the last time that happened was back in 1994-95!

10:45 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Nishiyama with a ball to left center!  He's in with a leadoff double!  Handa-kantoku has Yamaguchi bunt him over to 3rd.

Things are shaky for Nanashima early as he walks Tokushige.

He takes off for 2nd!  Throw from Kawauchi in plenty of time, and the dancing around won't help! 2 down!

And Kokubo grounds back to Nanashima and Nishiyama is stranded at 3rd!

Bottom 1st
One down and Hakiai reaches down on a slider and lines one to left for a base hit.

Tokushige though with a grounder to short.  Nishiyama goes to 2nd, throws it away!  It goes to right and Hakiai goes to 3rd!  Kanoya threatening right back with runners at the corners!

And now Akao hits Kihara!  Manrui for Kanoya Chuo as Kawauchi steps in!

But he hits a grounder to 2nd! Yamane starts the 4-6-3 double play and the side is retired!  Both aces are in trouble in the opening frame but both get out of the jam!

Top 2nd
It's a real quick inning for Nanashima in the 2nd.  He needs just 8 pitches to retire the side in order, and he puts his team back on the sticks.

Bottom 2nd
Oota tries to inside out a ball, but flies out to Abe for the 1st out.

Kanda with a solid single past a diving Nishiyama for a base hit.

Yamamoto-kantoku tries the hit-and-run! But Yamashita hits it right to 2nd!  Yamane again starts the 4-6-3 double play and the side is retired once again!

Top 3rd
Akao looks to help his own cause with a leadoff single through the left side.

Yamane lays down a great bunt, but Nanashima fires to 2nd!  He cuts down the lead runner with a great play!

Handa-kantoku puts on the hit-and-run, but Nishiyama flies out to left for the 2nd out.

Yamaguchi straightens out his swing after just lining one foul, and it goes fair down the left field line!  Yamane heading to 3rd, being waved home!  Relay throw... in plenty of time and he's thrown out to end the inning!

Boy, that was a base running mistake there by Shiritsu Wakayama...

Bottom 3rd
The game is flying along as Kanoya tries to scrap together a base hit.  Kawasaki tries a safety bunt with one down, but that fails as Akao has a 9 pitch inning.

Top 4th
One down for Kokubo and he hits a single to left.  No wait!  He's heading for 2nd!  Kihara scrambles to get the ball in, but Kokubo catches the defense off guard and he's in with a hustle double!

Nakayama slicer down the left field line.. fair!  Kawasaki has to run it down, but Kokubo scores from 2nd and Shiritsu Wakayama takes the lead! 1-0!

Nanashima retires the next 2 batters, but back-to-back doubles give Wakayama the lead!

Bottom 4th
One down, Kihara goes into a long AB vs Akao. He finally wins, drawing a walk on the 10th pitch of the AB.

Kawauchi trying to lay down the bunt, fails, and now there's 2 strikes.

They try the hit-and-run, but Kawauchi reaches down and lines one right to Nishiyama who doubles off Kihara for another inning-ending double play!

Top 5th
After recording his 3rd K, Nanashima leaves a slider over the plate and Yamane takes it down the right field line for a double!

Comebacker by Nishiyama! Nanashima snags it! He looks Yamane back and goes to 1st for the out!

Another comebacker to Nanashima!  He gets a glove on it, it deflects to Kanda who makes the play at 1st for the 3rd out!

Bottom 5th
Oota fooled mightily on a slider, just gets the bat on the ball and grounds to 2nd. Akao gets his 2nd K as put a fastball perfectly on the outside corner to get Kanda.

Yamashita goes for the safety bunt, and Nishiyama has too much ground to cover!  He's in safe with a head-sliding bunt single!

Handa-kantoku continues trying for the hit-and-run, but Nanashima grounds to short to end the inning.

It's actually been a clean games, with the sending home of Yamane being the only blemish.  Shiritsu Wakayama holds a tenuous 1-0 lead as we hit the break.

Top 6th
Nanashima seems to have settled down after the break as none of the balls hit by the 4-5-6 batters gets out of the infield.

Bottom 6th
Meantime Akao is continuing to keep the Kanoya batters off the bases, striking out Kawasaki on a fastball cutting the outside corner.  He then gets some help when Yamane ranges behind 2nd to grab a hit from Hakiai.  The throw takes a bounce, but the head-slide buys it more time for it to get there for the out.

Tokushige manages to get a 2-out hit to center, but can't make anything of it as Kihara grounds to 2nd for the 3rd out

Top 7th
Nanashima has really found his tempo as he's hitting his spots and getting bad contact.  Yes, he backs Abe out with a ball inside, but its the old in and out trick and Abe just waves at a ball outside for the 1st out.

Tanaka and Akao follow right behind and Nanashima has his 2nd consecutive clean inning.

Bottom 7th
One down in Kanoya's lucky 7, and Oota turns the ball back up the middle for a base hit.  Yamamoto-kantoku elects to go for the one time shot with a sac bunt.

Ah, but Yamashita rolls a ball over to 2nd and the side is retired!  Nothing doing in the lucky 7 and they're down to their last 6 outs.

Top 8th
Nanashima's streak of retired batters ends at 10 when he walks Yamaguchi with 2 down.  He quickly turns around and gets Setoguchi to fly out to right to end the inning.

Bottom 8th
That'll be it for Nanashima, #13 Nishimura comes in to PH for him to lead off the 8th.

The strategy pays off as Nishimura lines a fastball to left for a base hit!  He's replaced immediately by #17 Hiromori at 1B. Kawasaki lays a bunt up the 1st base line and the douten runner is in scoring position.

Hakiai goes after the first pitch, grounds to 3rd.  Hiromori can't advance and there's 2 down.

Tokushige base hit up the middle! They're sending Hiromori home!  Throw from Yamaguchi cut off!  He scores, but Akao goes back to 2nd where they get Tokushige for the 3rd out.

BUT! We have a whole new ballgame as we head to the 9th!

With Nanashima gone, #10 Yonezawa comes in for PR Moriyama and takes the hill.

Kokubo shot to 3rd, Tokushige tries to backhand, but it deflects away and Kokubo is on with a base hit.  Nakayama bunts him along.

And now it's Shiritsu Wakayama's turn to send in a PH. #7 Ooshima comes to hit for Abe.

Ooshima goes down swinging, but the ball gets away from Kawauchi!  He scrambles to get the ball up the 3rd base line and fires wide!  Oota makes the catch and tag though an d there's 2 down.  But Kokubo advances another 90 feet to 3rd...

That brings up Tanaka to try and break the tie...

Grounder to short! Hakiai with the grab, throw to 1st...  Oota makes a great stretch to get the ball and the side is retired!

Bottom 9th
Ooshima stays in the game at RF.

Kihara and Kawauchi both retired quickly and we look to be headed for enchousen when Oota hits a single to left.

And now Kanda hits a ball back up the middle and the sayonara run is in scoring position!

Yamashita doesn't seem anxious to swing, gets ahead 2-1 before going after a ball inside to level the count.

Base hit to left!  Oota being waved around??!!

Throw home from Kokubo... easily in time and while Oota evades the tag the first time, he's got nowhere to go and we're headed to enchousen!

Yonezawa doing well in relief so far, getting Akao to swing over a slider for the first out.

Of course I say that and then he loses Yamane to a walk.  And now Nishiyama singles through the left side!  Gyakuten runner in scoring position as Yamamoto-kantoku calls time.  #11 Sorachi is scrambled to the bullpen.

Liner from Nishiyama!  Right to Hakiai!  Yamane can only look up in frustration as he's doubled off to end the inning!!

Bottom 10th
Yonezawa hard hit to right side, but Yamane make a great pick!  Throw to 1st and there's 1 down!  Nice play on the bad hop!

Akao retires Kawasaki and Hakiai for a clean inning, and we're headed to the 11th.

Setoguchi gives the ball a ride, but right to Yamashita.  Kokubo does the same, but this time to Kihara.

It's not a clean inning though because Yonezawa issues his 2nd walk to Nakayama.

Handa-kantoku with the hit-and-run again, but Ooshima grounds to Hakiai to end the inning.

Bottom 11th
Tokushige with another base hit back up the middle and Kanoya Chuo is in business!

Kihara swinging, but it's a ball right to Setoguchi! He goes to 2nd for one, throw back to Setoguchi, double play!  Kihara hits into the 3-6-3 double play and there's suddenly 2 outs!

Kawauchi flies out to center and we move onto the 12th!

Top 12th
The teams are searching for any momentum as Tanaka takes the first pitch and flies out to left.

Akao can't get anything going and goes down swinging.

It's 1-2-3 for Wakayama as Yamane hits a swinging bunt that Kawauchi fields for the 3rd out.

Bottom 12th
Oota grounder to short, but Nishiyama muffs the ball! Nakayama backs up, but it's too late!

Kanda lays down a hard bunt, but Akao's play is still to 1st.  Sayonara runner on in scoring position.

Yamashita base hit through the right side!  Oota rounding 3rd, is held up as Ooshima gets the ball in.  Sayonara runner 90 feet away as Handa-kantoku calls time...

Yonezawa grounder to 2nd!!  Yamane with the ball, goes to 1st??!!

Yamane goes to 1st and Oota scores the sayonara run...

Oh boy....

What do you even say? It's obvious what happened. Yamane lost track of the outs, threw to the wrong bag, and Kanoya Chuo walks off 2-1...

There isn't any joy in this win either. Kanoya Chuo got a break, and Yamane is completely broken. The cameras are all focused on him for obvious reasons, but all he wants to do is hide.

You just never want to see a game end this way.  12 hard fought innings with both sides playing great baseball... and then the game ends on something like this.  All he can do is apologize, and probably wonder that his legacy will be remembered for that one play.

It shouldn't. It really shouldn't...
