98th Natsu Koushien - Day 11, Game 2 - Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama) v Sakushin Gakuin (Tochigi)

This inter-regional matchup is probably the marquee game of the day as both Hanasaki Tokuharu and Sakushin Gakuin fight for a spot in the quarterfinals.

10:50 - First pitch!

Imai out to show his presence on the mound, pumping in faster and faster fastballs. He strikes the first 2 batters out maxing at 152 kph (95 mph). That's good and all, but you have 8 more innings and 3 more games to go.

As for his counterpart, Tsunawaki won't be mistaken for such a fireballer. Unfortunately he gets into early trouble walking Yamamoto. Good thing though is that he's thrown out trying to steal 2nd. But with 2 down, he gives up back to back line drives to Irie and Kobayashi. He escapes out of the inning, but it appears he might have some work ahead of him...

Hanasaki Tokuharu gets their first hit out of the way quickly after, with Kusumoto hitting a ball to right center and hustling for a double. That's all they get though, but at least they've proven he's not unhittable.

And then we have our proverbial (at least this tournament) big inning. Sakushin Gakuin goes to town on Tsunawaki with singles from Ikari, Shinozaki, Imai and Yamanoi making it 3-0 before Irie blasts a HR to left center. 5-0 and #11 Shimizu enters the game.

(I'm coming down with a headache as well as being fatigued. Will be updating when I can)

Hanasaki Tokuharu does manage to score a run before the break, However, they had runners on the corners with 1 down in the 4th, and manrui with 2 out in the 5th and were not able to score any further to close the gap. There's some hope there in getting base runners, and in Imai's control, but they need to convert these with just 4 innings to go,

Quite predictably, Hanasaki Tokuharu doesn't recover from the deficit, unlike me who at least doesn't have the headache anymore (but I'm still tired as all heck). The spot start hurts them as they fail to win today to make use of resting the ace.

2 matches to go in round 2. Both Shounan and Hanasaki Tokuharu won handily in the 1st round, it'll be interesting to see how these teams fare, because they're certainly not as good as their 1st games indicate.

12:10 - First Pitch!

For certain Hanasaki Tokuharu with their ace in Takahashi is probably favored. But Hamaya at least in his first game looked well enough to compete, and responded early with routine groundouts and a couple of Ks. Nishikawa did gets a line single to left, but it's been one of the few square-ups the team has had early.

On the other hand though Takahashi has had quite a few baseballs squared up on. Top 1st, both Imada and Oozawa hit line singles to the outfield. Now, they ran themselves out of the inning when Imada was picked off 1st, but you had to wonder if it was just a fluke.

2nd inning, Sekiyama gets a base hit up the middle. After they fail to bunt the runner over, it's Sekiyama's turn to get picked off 1st by Nomoto. 2 innings in a row while you're hitting the ace good? You're not going to get these opportunities forever.

And yet Shounan still gets a chance at a run after Orio is plunked and Kusumoto makes a high throw on Hamaya's grounder, but nothing comes of it.

But if nothing else, Hamaya and his defense are preventing Hanasaki Tokuharu from taking the Shounan mistakes and turning them into an advantage. Top 3, 1 down and Nomoto hits a ball to shallow left. Yoshiuchi charges in, dives, and makes a great catch for the 2nd out.

Now for sure Hanasaki Tokuharu is having baserunners, but not in dangerous situations except for Nishkawa's leadoff in the 2nd.

But once again, Shounan's main skill appears to be to shoot themselves in the foot.

Bottom 3, leadoff single by Imada. After a sac bunt, it's Okazaki's turn to throw a ball to 1st high.

AND YET. When Nomoto tries to catch Imada coming home on a possible squeeze, Kamikuri takes off for 2nd, and...

Well do I need to say?

3 straight rallies killed off by poor baserunning. No need to say it, but they'll certainly regret it later.

Bottom 4th, Orio hits a blooper to left that somehow finds its way between Okazaki and Nishikawa. During Hamaya's AB, Orio takes off for 2nd, but doubles back after he stumbles. He barely makes it back to 1st without being thrown out.

And on the VERY NEXT PITCH, Hamaya drives a hanging slider to left center and to the wall for a double, which scores Orio, 1-0.

Hamaya takes that lead to the break, thanks to 9 groundball outs which have to have frustrated the Hanasaki Tokuharu team.

But post-break, Hamaya finds himself in a spot of trouble. He hits Nomoto, and then with 2 down and Nomoto on 3rd, he walks Okazaki.

Nishikawa then hits a comebacker off of Hamaya's glove. It slows down enough going up the middle that Orio has no play when he gets there. Nomoto scores the douten run to make it 1-1.

And all those runs that could have been come back to bit them here, because on the next batter Kusumoto sneaks one past a diving Kamikuri down the right field line for a bases clearing triple. 3-1.

Toss in another HBP and a single past a diving Oozawa up the middle and the final tally ends up at 4-1.

Hamaya would be relieved in 7th for #10 Hatakenaka soon after walking a batter, but he would give up that runner and one more. 6-1 and if the game wasn't in hand then, it is now.

Shounan scores some token runs late, but the game was never in doubt as Hanasaki Tokuharu advances 6-3.

98th Natsu Koushien - Day 4, Game 4 - Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama) v Oomagari Kougyou (Akita)

16:15 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Not exactly the start you want if you're Fujii against a Koushien mainstay...

First he walks Chimaru. Iwai-kantoku puts on the hit-and-run, and that advances the runner on the groundout.

Almost out of the inning, Satou swings the door open with a gapper to left center for a RBI double. 1-0 Hanasaki Tokuharu.

Bottom 1st
Oomagari Kougyou has to be kicking themselves for this sequence.

Kouhei draws a walk to start proceedings. Tanba can't lay a good bunt down and Kouhei is retired at 2nd. Then Tanba gets picked off 1st.

After that, Morisawa and Satou both hit clean singles in which Tanba would have likely scored.

Instead Sado pops out to 1st and the inning is over.

Top 2nd
Fujii almost gets his clean frame, but his counterpart spoils it with a double to left center.

He still has a chance to close out the inning before it turns over, but he walks Nomoto...

Chimaru punishes Fujii with a single to center, making it a 2-0 ballgame.

Bottom 2nd
Kouya giving Oomagari Kougyou some chances early. One down, Hinata singles to right, then proceeds to walk Katou.

Okazaki double clutches on a double play attempt allowing the inning to continue, but Kouhei grounds out to end the inning.

4th Inning
The 3rd inning comes and goes, but in the 4th Hanasaki Tokuharu gets the engine going again.

Nishime gets a single to left. 2 batters later, Nomoto is getting a steady diet of curveballs, but the first fastball he sees, he drives it over the RF head for a triple extending the lead to 3-0.

But hold on a sec! Sado first pitch hits a ball to deep left! Nishikawa going back to the fence... and it's gone!! Sado hits a home run and it's a 3-1 game! Now, they don't get anything thereafter, but that's sure to pick up their spirits!

Bottom 5th
Sure enough, Oomagari Kougyou's bats are continuing to make progress. #9 batter Fujii gets a base hit to left, followed by Tanba 2 batters later - all solid contact. Nothing comes of it, but they've had opportunities all game. Who will circle the wagons first? Kouya or the Oomagari offense?

Day 4, Game 3 - Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama) vs. Shuugakukan (Kumamoto)

Last pairing could be a tough one for a region champion as they are facing a region in form. Shuugakukan has posted good numbers, and despite a weaker super-regional schedule, their 4-2 loss to Touhou looks all that better. But while that may be the case, their offense certainly isn't as strong as their 0.374/0.411/0.637 line would indicate, and their pitching trio of Arimura/Horie/Nakai can somewhat hold their own.

Hanasaki Tokuharu has an ace in Takahashi that struck out more than 10 per 9. But in their game against Kisaradzu Sougou, that value was cut in half. I have no doubt that he can strike out batters, but probably not at the clip his fall stats indicate. In addition, in their two losses to Urawa Gakuin and the aforementioned Kisaradzu Sougou the offense, which had batted 0.309/0.408/0.520 were basically shut down. This may be due to the fact that a third of their lineup batted 0.260 or worse, so potential scoring opportunities could die on the vine depending where in the lineup they are.

Despite Kanto having success compared to Kyushu, Shuugakukan stands a chance against the floating bid from Kanto IF Arimura can manage the game.

CF Harada Takumi
1B Kimoto Ryouga

RF Kimura Yuuji
2B Hanjyou Touma (#17)

____________________________________________________________

14:40 - First Pitch!

Here I was worried about Arimura, and Horie walks his first batter. But Horie must have some goods to have a slider, curve, change, 2 seamer and I think I missed one. (changeup, it was the change)

Toshiki tries to bunt him along, but offers strike 3 on a ball in the dirt. That's the first actual failed three bunt this tournament if I'm not mistaken.

Horie is going back and forth it seems, walking Okazaki, then striking out Nishikawa on an inside change.

Kusumoto is awarded a dead ball, but I think the batters are catching on that the umpires aren't really checking. That's starting to really annoy me.

Thankfully for me anyways, Hanasaki Tokuharu doesn't benefit from it. Yamamoto gets frozen on a changeup on the outer edge.

As for Dr K (aka Takahashi Kouya), Shuugakukan may have something on him as he's not getting his way with the batters. I mean he's getting outs, but the batters are fighting tooth and nail. He walks 1 strikes out 1, but throws 26 pitches in the inning.

The bottom of the lineup fares worse against Horie, with all three batters getting under his pitches making for easy flyball outs. The location was better that inning and could just be nerves.

The 3rd inning sees Hanasaki get on the board. Toshiki, who couldn't lay down the bunt in the 1st, takes a slider the other way. After a sac bunt with 1 down, Nishikawa takes the 1st pitch past a diving Hanjyou into right. Kimura makes a great throw home, but Kuki just can't secure it before Toshiki boots it away on his slide. 1-0.

Shuugakukan looks to strike right back. One down, Matsuo singles just out of Okazaki's reach up the middle. Harada turns on a ball down the 3B line for a single.

But instead of a bunt to move the runners over, Kouya makes a wild throw to 2nd on a pickoff attempt and lets Matsuo move to 3rd. Harada subsequent steals 2nd without a throw. To top it off Kimoto gets his 2nd walk in as many appearances.

And then all heck breaks loose. Kouya grooves a fastball that Kuki drives to left center for a double, giving Shuugakukan the 2-1 lead. But that's not all. Amamoto gets a hold of one himself, and if the wind wasn't blowing in from left, he might have had a HR. Instead, he gets a sac fly for 3-1. Hirobe connects on a slider and drives that into the gap in left center, rolling all the way to the wall scoring one more at 4-1.

Capping it off, Kajisha-kantoku goes for the double steal, and Hanasaki Tokuharu had had enough of that inning, they just let the run score to get the 3rd out. 5-1.

Hanasaki Tokuharu gets back a run before the break. Nomoto crushes a fastball down the left field line for a double. after a bunt, they get a wild pitch to make the score 5-2.

Of course, in order to get back the run you have to hold serve. Kouya didn't.

Kimoto single to center. Kuki bunt, but Kouya goes to 2nd where Kimoto beats the throw. Then Amamoto singles past a diving Nishime to score 1. The lead goes back up to 4 at 6-2.

They may not be done yet either. Kimura with 2 down holds up on a 2-2 pitch just outside. As a result of holding off he gets a walk to load the bases.

Even though it's their #9 batter, Hanjyou drives a ball to deep right. Toshiki makes the easy catch, but it's scary how well the team is seeing the ball.

Post-break, Kajisha-kantoku's pitching machine churns. #11 Taura comes in to pitch and bats in Hanjyou's spot. Horie goes to his numbered position.

This is where it starts to get interesting because Taura has a 13/10 K/BB ratio.

Uh, he's doing fine thanks?

Catches the outside edge both times on Nishikawa and Kusumoto for 2 outs. Yamamoto makes contact, but it's just a grounder to 1st. Not a bad way to start.

It gets better for him in the 7th. He's hitting all the corners and he actually strikes out the bottom of the order!

But in the 8th things get pear shaped, and FAST.

Hitting Chimaru wasn't a problem, until Toshiki doubled down the left field line. A groundout was welcome by Shuugakkan as they would love to trade a run for an out. 6-3.

Instead of trading runs for outs, they were just hemorrhaging runs.  Nishikawa spins around a 150 kph fastball to left center, to score 1 more. 6-4.

And when Kusumoto doubles down the right field line making it a 6-5 game, he has no choice. Ace Arimura enters the game to try and stem the tide.

And he does! Yamamoto fouls out to Kuki, and Kimoto smothers a grounder from Nishime! Shuugakukan just holds onto their lead!

#11 Tsunawaki holds serve the last two innings giving his team a chance.

Iwai-kantoku goes for broke. He PH for his 3rd P, but Tominaga flies out to right. Nomoto goes down swinging for the 2nd out, and Chimaru chases a forkball in the dirt for the final out!

It wasn't a complete performance by Shuugakukan, as there are questions regarding the bullpen, but the team feels very well built - several pitchers Kajisha-kantoku can turn to, and hitters who can put together professional ABs.

And also, who knew a double steal would be the difference in the game? But they're certainly not going to complain - and Nanyou Kougyou better watch out next round.

Reviewing the projected field - Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama)/Nishogakushadai Fuzoku (Tokyo)

I forgot to cover the Tokyo/Kanto flex bid which seemingly will go to Hanasaki Tokuharu instead of Nishogakushadai Fuzoku because I just can't see the JHBF choosing a team to go for the 2nd straight year on a floating bid - even though their resume is much stronger:

Hanasaki Tokuharu

  • Quality wins - Kasukabe Kyouei
  • Quality losses(?) - Urawa Gakuin, Kisaradzu Sougou
  • Questionable games - Waseda Honjyou (won 5-3), Kitoku (won 4-2)
Nishogakushadai Fuzoku
  • Quality wins - Waseda Jitsugyou, Nichidai-san, Toukaidai Takanawadai (to a lesser extent)
  • Quality losses - Kanto Dai-ichi (again)
  • Questionable games - None

But I'll cover both just in case. Hopefully the JHBF proves me wrong and chooses the better team (in my opinion).

Hanasaki Tokuharu's ace Takahashi Kouya (高橋 昂也) pitched at Koushien last summer with a good level of success giving up just 1 run in 8 innings of work, striking out 8 and walking just 2. He appears to be able to hold his own against better competition, but it would help if he had good defense behind him. He throws in the low 140s with a slider/curve/fork combo.

The counterpart, Nishogakushadai Fuzoku's Ooe Ryuusei (大江 竜聖) has put up strong numbers at Koushien and has a repertoire similar to Takahashi. He also seems to have gained a couple ticks on the fastball though his numbers are not as strong as at Koushien.

In terms of offense, I'm searching for more detailed game info from Tokyo as box scores are hard to come by (for some reason), but it's certainly promising that against Kanto Dai-ichi (for the umpteenth time), down the lineup almost everyone collected a hit - this compared with Hanasaki Tokuharu and their main guy Okazaki Daisuke (岡崎 大輔).

I'll need to do some extra research (when I'm not at work) to find more batting/pitching details, but pitching being equal the results for Nishogakushadai Fuzoku look much better.

Day 12, Quarterfinal 2 - Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama) v Toukaidai Sagami (Kanagawa)

Of all the teams I dislike in these matchups, Toukaidai Sagami probably is the one that I hate the least. They never really eliminated any of my favorite teams, and heck, they're not Yokohama.

And I didn't have anything against Hifumi Shinta. There were reports that he changes his delivery because he had hit someone in the head and didn't want that to happen again. Of course it meant he hit more people, but it worked.

I guess at this point they've had their title. Give Hanasaki Tokuharu and a oddly beleaguered Saitama prefecture a title.

The problem is that after annihilating Misawa Shougyou, they survived a 1-0 game over Tsuruoka Higashi managing just 6 hits. If that's is what they do against that team, then they'll have a tough time playing Toukaidai Sagami.

Toukaidai Sagami has not been challenged at all so far. Not that they've faced a team that could have presented a challenge (Sorry Seikou Gakuin and Yuugakukan, it's kind of the truth). But because of the competition there is little to gauge on other than the game on the jersey. Yet that might be anough for a school who can garner some of the best talent.

____________________________________________________________

10:23 - First pitch!

1st Inning
Yoshida on fire to start, striking out both Kuguu and Oota to start. Gives up a soft single to left, but gets out of the inning thereafter.

Kamakura about the same, gets a K and two weak groundouts to 2nd.

Top 2nd
Satomi reaches down and golfs a ball to left for a leadoff single. Kusumoto tries to lay down the butn, but Nagakura is quickly on the ball and fires to 2nd, just getting Satomi.

So Satomi makes up for it by stealing 2nd on the very next pitch!

Sasaya can't do much more than to move him to 3rd, but Yoshida strikes out Kamakura as he lunges for a ball on the outer half.

Bottom 2nd
Toyoda with a blast to right! Satomi headed towards the foul pole, leaps... and makes the catch right before the wall!

Isoami with a ball to right center, gets down for a single. He then tries to steal 2nd, but is thrown out by a strong throw from Sasaya.

Which is a shame because on the next pitch Nagakura goes down the right field line for a double.

And now Takeuchi singles to left! Nagakura scores as Takeuchi takes 2nd on the throw! 1-0 Toukaidai Sagami!

Top 3rd
Yoshida about to cruise through a 1-2-3 inning, but then with two down Oota bloops one in front of Toyoda, which would have still gone for a single had not Miyaji flubbed in his backup. Toyoda as a result of that goes all the way to 3rd.

And Okazaki gets his bat down, on a 3-2 pitch no less, and lines it to center! Toyoda scores and we're all tied at 1-1!

Now they're pressing the action! Okazaki goes for 2nd and he steals the bag!

And now Ootaki with a ball down the right field line.. fair!! Okazaki comes around and he scores!! Hanasaki Tokuharu answers big and takes the 2-1 lead!'

Top 4th
Kameya with a ball past Kawaji and into left! And Kameya books ito to 2nd! Kamkura moves him to 3rd.

AH!!  A wild pitch from Yoshida! Kameya can come home and it's 3-1!

Hanasaki Tokuharu on the attach! Kamimura singles to left!

And now it's the hit-and-run! Kuguu hits it through the open left side and it's runners at 1st and 2nd!

That'll be it for Yoshida, Ace Ogasawara comes in to relieve him.

And first pitch he gets Oota to ground right to the bag at 3rd.

Bottom 4th
Sugisaki starts with a single back up the middle and is moved to 2nd.

Isoami gets a hold of one and drives it to deep center! It goes over Ootaki and that will score Sugisaki to make it a 1-run ballgame! 3-2!

Break for Hanasaki Tokuharu! Kamakura is able to field Nagakura's comebacker and he has Isoami in a pickle! He's run down and there's 2 outs! Takeuchi is retired thereafter and the side is retired!

Bottom 5th
Momentum seems to be shifting to Toukaidai Sagami now. Kawaji walks, but while Ogasawara can't bunt the runner over, Chino singles to left! Now the gyakuten runner is on base, and now #18 Takahashi enters the game for Kamakura!

Contact play! Kawaji comes home, but Miyaji hits it right to Kusumoto! He goes home and Kawaji is out! 2 down!

Sugisaki with a slow bounder back up the middle! Okazaki gets to it, but the throw to 1st isn't in time! Manrui for Sagami!

Did I forget that Takahashi can hit 145? He's pulling it out in trying to get Toyoda out.

SANSHIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow!! Takahashi blows a fastball by him for strike 3!! He comes in relief and holds the lead for Hanasaki Tokuharu!

6th Inning
Despite the break Hanasaki Tokuharu is unable to get any momentum.

So Toukaidai Sagami continues to ratchet up the pressure.

Isoami a drive to center! Ootaki running back... leaps... AND MAKES THE CATCH!

Ootaki selling out on that play and gets rewarded!

Now Nagakura with a ball down the right field line... Oota dives this time... but he can't get to it! Nagakura at 2nd with a double and Toukaidai is in business!

Takeuchi singles to left! Nagakura has to hold at 3rd, but the offense is starting to roll now!

Kawaji without a hit, but behind 0-2 he continues to spoil pitches.

He puts it in play, but it's right to Kusumoto again! They throw home once more and Nagakura is out!! 2 down!

SANSHIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Takahashi gets Ogasawara swinging and Hansaki Tokuharu escapes again!!

Bottom 7th
Toukaidai Sagami is running out of time, and they may be running out of momentum.

Chino with a groundball up the 1st base line that stays fair.

Miyaji swings and misses on a slider...

And Sugisaki pops out! Clean inning from Takahashi and they're that much closer to a win!

Top 8th
Okazaki with a grounder to the right side. Chino runs it down, but the throw to 1st... not in time!

Ootaki another grounder to the right side! Isoami dives, but can't get to it! And with a bunt from Satomi, Kusumoto can possibly put this game away!

But Kusumoto's ball to left is too shallow! Takeuchi makes the catch and the runners have to hold!

Toukaidai Sagami calls time and they're going to take the bat away from Sasaya and pitch to Takahashi.

And it works! He hits a chopper which Ogasawara fields and goes to 1st for the 3rd out!

Bottom 8th
And with that half inning there's life again! Toyoda leads off with a clean single to right!

Despite the 2 doubles earlier, Isoami bunts the runner along!

BALK! Takahashi is called for a balk!

And that comes back to haunt him! Nagakura hits a fly to left, and that will get the run in! We're all tied at 3-3!

And now the gyakuten runner reaches after Takahashi walks Takeuchi! Hanasaki Tokuharu calls time.

Grounder to 2nd! Oota fumbles it, throws to 1st.... and just gets the 3rd out!

The score lines stand identical at 3-10-1 as we head to the 9th! Who will get that key run across?

Top 9th
Kamimura chopper up middle, Chino charging in! Throw across his body to 1st... beats a diving Kamimura!

But now Kuguu gets hit!

They go for the bunt, but Oota pops it up! Kawaji, crashing in catches it in foul ground for the 2nd out! And with Okazaki grounding to short, Toukaidai Sagami has a chance to walk off!

Bottom 9th
Ogaswara grounder up 1st base line, and Kamimura misses it? E3 and Toukaidai Sagami is in business!

But Chino bunt is right to a charging Kusumoto ! They go to 2nd for one, throw to 1st... AHHHHHHHH!!!

Throw to first is high and wide, and in the camera well!!  So now it's like a bunt, but instead of Ogasawara, it leadoff hitter Chino!!

But Miyaji grounds to 3rd! Chino has to hold as Hanasaki Tokuharu gets the 2nd out!

Day 10, Game 2 - Tsuruoka Higashi (Yamagata) v Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama)

The next game will be hard for me to handicap because one team I only saw halfway.

Hanasaki Tokuharu I could only watch half of because the prior game (Iwamichisuikan v Kounan) ran so long due to the numerous P changes. Of course, by the time I had to shut it down, they were well on their way to annihilating Misawa Shougyou 15-3. Because of said annihilation though, there isn't a whole lot you can take from the game. About the only thing is that ace Kamakura still only struck out 5, so the dominance wasn't complete per se.

As for Tsuruoka Higashi, the big issue is if ace Fukutani is feeling comfortable on the mound. He had been hit by a liner later in the game and them proceeded to give up several runs thereafter. The only issue is that the pitching of Tottori Jyouhoku wasn't all that spectacular.

(Well, that answers my question. #10 Matsuzaki is taking the hill)

10:55 - First pitch!

Top 1st
Leadoff walk by Kamakura to start the game isn't a good sign, but gets some help as Fujii bunts into the 1-6-3 double play.

And that double play is a shame because Kakizaki and Abe ring base hits to center and left respectively.

Ajiki flies out to left, and despite 3 baserunners, Tsuruoka Higashi gets 0 runs.

Bottom 1st
Well, Tanabe being kept busy in the 1st as all three groundballs go to him. He makes a great play for the last one as the side is retired.

Top 2nd
Once again Tsuruoka Higashi gets baserunners thanks to Kamakura. He walks Kurokawa and then hits Takemoto with one down.

But quickly thereafter Matsuzaki pops out and Tanabe flies out to left.

Bottom 2nd
Ootaki gets a leadoff single and after a bunt Hanasaki Tokuharu is on the verge of opening the scoring.

But Matsuzaki gets Kusumoto to chase a slider for the 2nd out.

Sasaya a hard shot to short, but Ajiki makes the pick! It puts on the seat of his pants, but he gets up and makes the throw to 1st for the 3rd out!

Top 3rd
Fujii a rip shot that bounces off Kusumoto and deflects all the way behind 2nd base for a single. He's bunted over, but Abe strikes out.

Sasaya though makes an error trying to pick him off, and ends up hitting Fujii! The ball goes to the outfield and Fujii takes 3rd!

But Ajiki weakly grounds to 2nd and another runner is left on base.

Bottom 3rd
Matsuzaki issues his first walk to Kamakura, but when they go for the hit-and run Kamimura strikes out and Kamakura gets thrown out.

Kuguu gets on base via an error on the throw by Tanabe, but a fly to right makes it a non-issue.

Top 4th
Maruyama with a drive to deep right center and he's in with a double!

Kurokawa lays down the bunt, but Maruyama doesn't advance! Maybe he thought he might be thrown out at 3rd, but either way the bunt fails!

Takemoto flies out to left so it's up to Matsuzaki.

Matsuzaki hard shot at Kusumoto! He blocks it, picks it up, and make the throw to 1st for the 3rd out!

Bottom 4th
Okazaki gets a leadoff 4-pitch walk. Ootaki not bunting, but succumbs to Matsuzaki's slider.

It's a bunt and run as Kuguu lays it down! Matsuzaki still tries to go to 2nd, but the runner is safe. They still get Kuguu at 1st, so all is not lost.

Kusumoto hits one right to Maruyama, and the side is retired.

Top 5th
Another walk! Kamakura walks Tanabe to start the inning.

AH!!!  But he strays too far from the base on the bunt attempt and Sasaya guns him down!

And with that momentum is lost for the inning. Fujii and Kakizaki are retired soon after and the side is retired.

Bottom 5th
Sasaya wiht a single to center and Hanasaki Tokuharu has their 4th leadoff runner on.

But Kamkura can't lay down the bunt and three bunts his way to an out!

Kamimura grounds into a fielder's choice and there's quickly 2 down.

AH!!! Matsuzaki throws to 1st and they pick off Kamimura for the 3rd out!

We hit the break deadlocked at 0, but both sides have had opportunities they couldn't take advantage of, and not to mention that there has been baserunning errors everywhere. Can't tell if it's pressure or what, but whomever can put it together first will probably win this game.

Top 6th
Kamakura perhaps settling down post-break. He does not give up a leadoff runner, striking out Abe looking. And while Maruyama singles through the right side, with 2 outs they can do little with it.

Bottom 6th
Same can be said for Matsuzaki as he strikes out Kuguu on a tough fastball inside. After that it's 2 groundouts and the inning is over.

Top 7th
One down, Matsuzaki singles back up the middle.

And now Tanabe with a single through the left side! Best chance for Tsuruoka Higashi in a while!

Hanasaki Tokuharu changing pitchers! #18 Takahashi comes in relief.

And now Tsuruoka Higashi makes a change! Brings in righty #13 Sakamoto to face him!

But he strikes out on 3 straight!

Takahashi strikes out Kakizaki on an outside fastball and the side is retired!!

Bottom 7th
Ootaki leadoff single to left! He's bunted over and Hanasaki Tokuharu threatening again as Tsuruoka Higashi calls time.

Kusumoto grounder to left side, Ajiki makes another great stop! But is throw to 1st is not in time and everyone's safe!!

2-1 and Kusumoto takes off for 2nd, but the throw from Takemoto is in time!  But as they run him down Ootaki edges towards home! And they give up on the out!

And Sasaya back up the middle... Ajiki can't get it! It'ts through to center and Ootaki comes home! 1-0 Hanasaki Tokuharu in the Lucky 7!!!

Takahashi ends up grounding into the 1-6-3 double play, but he now has a lead to work with!

Top 8th
Tsuruoka Higashi playing against the clock now as Abe pops out.

Ajiki without a hit still, but draws a 4-pitch walk.

Maruyama grounder up the 1st base line... past Kamimura and into right! Ajiki takes 3rd and a big chance for Tsuruoka Higashi to tie!

Hanasaki Tokuharu meanwhile calls time.

Kurokawa up the 3rd base line, but Kusumoto has it! It's a contact play and Ajiki's hung out to dry! 2 outs and Tsuruoka Higashi continues to struggle!

#16 Kosunagawa(?) enters to run for Maruyama (who was 3-4 on the day)! They're going for broke.

And they busted out!

Takemoto flies out to center and I think that's going to be it for Tsuruoka Higashi!

Bottom 8th
Hanasaki Tokuharu looking for that insurance run!

After a walk and a single by Okazaki, ace Fukutani finally enters.

Ootaki with a rip shot to 3rd! Kurokawa with it! Throw to 2nd.. in time! 3 out!

Top 9th
But now they're down to their final 3 outs.

Fukutani grounds to 1st for the first out.

Tanabe is frozen for strike 3.

And Sakamoto strikes out on the high fastball for the final out.

It was a hard fought game, with both sides making mistakes. However Hanasaki Tokuharu is able to push through a run, and that's all they needed.

I can't tell if it was just the teams were pressing, or they just couldn't find that timely hit, but for the team from Yamagata, it's another exit before the Best 8...

Day 6, Game 4 - Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama) v Misawa Shougyou (Aomori)

Seeing as though I'm only getting 2-2.5 hours of sleep because of last game, I need to conserve as much energy as I can - or if the game is out of hand just give up and get some rest. Hanasaki Tokuharu did not face anyone of note, while Misaawa Shougyou defeated both Hirosaki Gakuen Seiai, and Hachinohe Gakuin Kousei. It might give them a better chance against them, but not sure by how much. Also, Saitama, for being a metropolitan prefecture, isn't all that strong. So, there's that.

Apologies if this game is short on commentary. We should be in the middle of the final game right now and I'm really tired.

17:15 - First pitch!

Top 1st
Hoo boy.I tried to give Misawa Shougyou credit where credit might be due, but this is ugly early.

Kuguu starts with a double over Morita's head. After a sac bunt and HBP, Ootaki grounds to 2nd bringing in the first run. 1-0.

After yet another HBP, Kusamoto singles through the right side scoring Okazaki (HBP). When he steals 2nd without a throw Sasaya's single to right scores 2 to make it 4-0. Which is where the 1st inning ends.

Top 2nd
Back to the top of the lineup and Kuguu gets yet another double.and after another sac bunt Okazaki's single to right makes it 5-0.

Top 3rd
Noda was this *pinches fingers* close to getting a 1-2-3 inning.

But then Kamakura walked, Uemura lines one past Hatayama for a boudle. and then Kuguu got his 3rd hit in as many innings, driving in 2. 7-0.

Top 5th
By this time Noda had been replaced by #10 Tomita Tooi.  After a base hit and a fielder's choice by Kuguu Oota hits a 2-out double to make it 9-0,

It's at this point at the break my body is telling me I'm done. So I'm abandoning this game calling it in Favor of Hanasaki Tokuharu.

Day 6, Game 3 - Kenritsu Gifu Shougyou (Gifu) vs. Hanasaki Tokuharu (Saitama)

Interestingly, the organizers have shuffled games on days 5-7 such that even though teams have played their 2nd game already, here we have Kenritsu Gifu Shougyou and Hanasaki Tokuharu playing their first game.  It probably has something to do with trying to even out the days of rest all the teams get.

Kenritsu Gifu Shougyou went relatively unchallenged through the prefecturals/super-regionals save for a 4-3 win in 11 against their bretheren Shiritsu Gifu Shougyou, and a 2-1 win against Tokoha Kikugawa.  But in their first round matchup at Meiji Jingu, they would be soundly defeated by eventual champions Sendai Ikuei 6-2.

Apparently, Fujita-kantoku was the catcher the last time Kenritsu Gifu Shougyou went to Haru Koushien.  18 years later his eldest son, ace Fuijita Ryouhei has led his team back to Haru Koushien!

Ryouhei has started and finished all games except for the 2nd round of the prefectural taikai.  There they used a triumvirate of pitchers who never saw any action after that.  I can't find any other info on Fujita though, and the peripherals aren't really much different than other aces to find fault with or stand out.

Offensively, the team did post a 0.135 ISO in addition to a 0.336 batting average.  The hit production for the most part though decreased as they faced Koushien-level schools though, so it might be a problem.  The main drives is cleanup batter Takenaka Hiroki who has more triples (4) than doubles (3).

Opposing them are the Kanto runner-ups Hanasaki Tokuharu who unfortunately had to face eventual super-regional champions Urawa Gakuin twice.  And defeating a team twice in the same season is never an easy proposition.  In the super-regionals, they defeated a Yokohama Hayato squad known for playing up to their opponents, routed my favorite team Narashino 12-0 and held on to defeat Jyousou Gakuin 6-4 before blowing a lead late and losing in 10 to Urawa Gakuin.

Hanasaki Tokuharu primarily uses a tandem of ace Sekiguchi and reliever Kogure.  Sekiguchi averages over a K/IP, but has a K:BB ratio of 18:24 in 33.2 IP., Kogure has a 6 K/9 rate, but has a K:BB ratio of 20:3.

Offensively, their cleanup batter Wakatsuki Kenya is one of their main drivers, the other surprisingly is Mori Daiki who is usually in the bottom part of the order.  The team is not afraid to take walks, though that is always predicated on how their opponents pitch more than anything else.

13:45 - First pitch

Top 1st
Sekimoto is one of the few pitchers that can hit 140+ on the gun.  Kawamura grounds to short for the first out.

Niwa fails to get around on a fastball inside and goes down swinging.

Meanwhile Azuma takes a ball away and pulls it back up the middle past a diving Yamamoto!

But Takenaka swings on a change down and away and it's a good start for Sekiguchi

Bottom 1st
Fujita seems to be more in the mold of most aces, in the 130s with a change in addition to the normal fare.

Ryuusei goes down swinging on a slider away for the first out.  But they get a baserunner when Fujita hits Matsumoto.  Iwai-kantoku elects to bunt him over for a one-shot.

Wakatsuki flies to right though and that ends the inning.

Top 2nd
Sekiguchi issues his first walk to Kouyama to start the inning.  Fujita lays down the bunt, and Sekiguchi looks at 2nd before he picks up the ball, and doesn't pick up the ball!  He misses again and everyone's safe!

So Aoki lays down another bunt and there's 2 runners in scoring position!

Noda delivers!  He goes down on a slider and shoots it through to center!  Kouyama scores, throw from Nozawa not in time!  Noda winds up at 2nd on the throw and Kengifushou has the 2-0 lead!

Fujita-kantoku has Okimoto bunt to cycle the lineup back to the top and he lays one down.

Kawamura takes one back up the middle and that easily picks up Noda to make it 3-0!

Sekiguchi experiencing control isssues runs the count to 3-1, but Niwa's bunt attempt is popped up and caught by a diving Wakatsuki for the 3rd out.  But a lot of balls in the zone and an error by the ace lead to an early deficit!

Bottom 2nd
Furukawa turns on a fastball and drills it to right center!  Aoki runs it down, but not before Furukawa is in with a leadoff triple!  Hanasaki Tokuharu poised to get the run back.

But Mori grounds to 3rd and can't get him in!

Nozawa gets the job done with a slow grounder to short.  Hanasaki gets one of the runs back and it's now 3-1.

Sekiguchi chases 2 sliders in the dirt to go down swinging to end the inning, but they're slowing chipping away at the deficit.

Top 3rd
Azuma with his 2nd hit as he turns on an inside curve and singles to right.  Takenaka bunts him along to 2nd.

Koyama with a ball the other way into right!  Tada charging in, can't grab the ball!  He doubles back allowing Azuma to score!  It's 4-1 Kengifushou!

Fujita tries to bunt the runner over, but hits it right to Sekiguchi who starts the 1-6-3 double play to end the inning

Bottom 3rd
Tada gets Hanasaki's 2nd leadoff runner as he singles past Noda into left.  Ryuusei bunts him along.

Fujita gets Matsumoto to chase a change low for the 2nd out.

Rack one more up for Fujita as he freezes Kusumoto on an outside fastball for the 3rd out!

Top 4th
Kengifushou continues to hit off of Sekiguchi.  Noda gets his 2nd hit, a one-out single through the right side.

And another base hit for Kawamura!  He singles to left and that scores Noda to make it 5-1!

Niwa can't join the hit parade as he swings on a slider in the dirt to end the inning.  But it's clear that Sekiguchi is just getting too much of the plate and the Kengifushou batters are just teeing off.

Bottom 4th
Wakatsuki with a drive to left-center!  Kawamura running back to the fence, turns around!

HAITAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wakatsuki does deliver with a solo HR to left!  He gets a run back to make it 5-2, but there's still a long way to go.

And while Nozawa works a 2-out walk, he stranded when Sekiguchi grounds out back to Fujita.

Top 5th
Sekiguchi not doing himself any favors as he hits Azuma to start the inning.

Fujita-kantoku elects not to bunt with Takenaka or Kouyama, and both flyout to center.

Fujita can't check his swing on a fork in the dirt and that ends the inning.  It's not a 1-2-3 inning, but it's a 0 on the board.

Bottom 5th
The rain seems to be coming down as people prepare their ponchos and umbrellas.  Not serious though, seems like it's light if at all.

Outside of the middle of the lineup, very few have had success against Fujita.

Tada and Ryuusei both can't get the ball out of the infield, and while Matsumoto gets another 2-out walk, Kusumoto grounds to 1st and we hit the break.

Once again the pace is very fast.  Sekiguchi's pitching has improved a bit here in the past inning, but missing in the wrong places have led to most of Kengifushou's runs.  Wakatsuki and Furukawa seem to have some level of success, but the rest of the lineup will need to produce.

Top 6th
Rain is coming down a bit harder, but still not enough to get people to evacuate for cover.

Well, Sekiguchi has settle d down the last couple of innings.  Outside of Aoki where he ran the count full before striking him out, he retires the other two batters with ease to hold the 3-run deficit.

Bottom 6th
Wakatsuki with a ball to shallow center.  Aoki charging in, the ball goes in and pops out of his glove!  It goes behind him and Wakatsuki reaches 2nd on the error!

Furukawa rightly swinging away, but Fujita induces a flyout to left.

Mori with a liner to right!  It's in for a AH!!!

The ball bounces and skips by Niwa and goes all the way to the wall!  Wakatsuki scores!  Mori rounding 3rd, is held up!  Hanasaki Tokuharu gets two breaks and get back a run!  It's 5-3!

And Fujita-kantoku almost expectedly pulls Niwa and puts regular #9 Hayashi in left.

Nozawa with a chance to close the gap further pops it up! Azuma makes the catch for the 2nd out!

And Sekiguchi can't bring him in!  He pops it up as well and Takenaka secures it to limit the damage!

Top 7th
Lucky 7 for Kengifushou, but it's lucky for Sekiguchi has he gets 2 quick groundouts to Yamamoto.

But Azuma gets his 3rd hit on a base hit to left, and then Sekiguchi hits Takenaka on a 55' changeup.

That gets Iwai-kantoku to call for time.

Kouyama with a grounder back up the middle.  Yamamoto charges over, flat misses it!  Goes into center and Azuma scores to bring the margin back to 3 at 6-3!

Fujita grounds to 1st, but mistakes by the Hanasaki defense continue to trip up the team.

Bottom 7th
Tada with his 2nd hit!  He lines one to left to start the inning!

Iwai-kantoku not bunting at this point, Ryuusei grounds to short but does advance the runner. Matsumoto does the same on a grounder to 1st, so a run is 90 feet away.

But he'll be left there as Kusumoto swings on the first pitch and flies out to left to end the inning.

Top 8th
Sekiguchi issues his 2nd walk to Aoki and Kengifushou has another leadoff runner.  Noda bunts him over for Okimoto.

He hits a grounder up the middle.  Yamamoto ranges to his right, and it's off his glove!  Nozawa backs him hip, but Aoki scores to make it a 7-3 game.

And now a wild pitch sends Okimoto to 2nd!  Things are going from bad to worse!

2 down for Hayashi and he singles to right!  Okimoto coming around to score!  Throw in from Hayashi not in time!  Wakatsuki fires to 2nd and gets Hayashi trying to advance.  Inning over, but it's 8-3 and the life has seemed to leave Hanasaki Tokuharu.

Bottom 8th
Yeah, it seems to be the case.  Fujita retires the 3-4-5 batters in just 7 pitches.

Top 9th
#10 Kogure comes in to finish the game for Sekiguchi.

After some nerves perhaps, Kogure gets Azuma to ground to 1st.  But on what should be a routine play to short, Kusumoto slides over only to have the ball go 5-hole on him and into left....

Oy. And now a wild pitch sends him to 2nd...

But Kogure freezes Kouyama on a slider for the 2nd out.

And Kogure gets a 2nd K in his inning of work as Fujita chases a slider in the dirt for the 3rd out.

Bottom 9th
It's all but a formality now.  Just 3 outs to go, and Fujita has thrown a cool 99 pitches.

Iwai-kantoku empties the bench.

#15 Suzuki in for Nozawa first pitch grounds to short.  #12 Nedachi in for Kogure, works the count full, then hits a comebacker to Fujita for the 2nd out.

Tada will bat seeing as though he's 2-3, I guess so.

But Tada grounds to 1st, and that's the game.  Kenritsu Gifu Shougyou advances with a sound 8-3 win over Hanasaki Tokuharu.

Not much to say here, Kenritsu Gifu Shougyou was pretty much solid throughout while Hanasaki Tokuharu struggled with defense the entire game.  Nevertheless, Hanasaki Tokuharu was still working their way back before they would trip over themselves again.

It'll certainly be a learning lesson for the Kanto runner-ups.  I'll expect their defense to improve before the summer.  Meanwhile, Kengifushou will need a similar performance from the offense as they will in all likelihood face Osaka Touin in the next round.
