Day 11, Game 2 - Chuukyoudai Chuukyou (Aichi) v Kanto Dai-ichi (Higashi Tokyo)

The lunchtime game features 2 well-known schools who both have flaws of their own.

Kanto Dai-ichi's only game slightly reminded me of that non-sensical game between Sendai Ikuei and Urawa Gakuin. Only here it was a bit more ordered.

Kanto Dai-ichi had broken open the game against Takaoka Shougyou turning a 1-0 lead into 8-0. But the very next half inning, they gave all 7 runs back. They then lost the lead, regained it back, lost it again before reclaiming it for the final time at 12-10. The teams combined for 28 hits, 8 of which were extra bases and 3 of those were of the HR variety.

So needless to say there are concerns about the pitching staff, and if you have problems there I wish you godspeed sir.

As for Chuukyoudai Chuukyou, their last game against Kagoshima Jitsugyou was not decided until the late stages when they scored 6 runs after the break to pull away for a 7-4 win. Ueno is doing just enough to keep his team ahead, and if he can continue doing that they could be a contender after all. That's a big if though, and the question is if Kanto Dai-ichi is good enough to mitigate that.

____________________________________________________________

10:45 - First pitch!

Top 1st
One down and Katou singles though the right side. 2 down, and a ptich that was supposed to be outside Itou makes contact with and sends it the other way for a base hit! Runners at the corners!

Kanto Dai-ichi in a lot of trouble now! Yatazaki draws a walk and it's manrui!

Bottom 1st
Kanto Dai-ichi's half is unfortunately not as exciting. Itou draws a 2-out walk, and then is caught badly when trying to steal 2nd.

Top 2nd
One out single for Naitou as Ueno moves him to 2nd with a slow chopper to short. Abe puts himself into another pinch walking Kawada, as the lineup moves closer to the heart.

He falls behind Katou 3-1 too, but gets him to pop up to Ihashi for the 3rd out.

Bottom 2nd
Igarashi draws a leadoff walk, but when Nagashima tries to lay down the bunt Yatazaki spin throws to 2nd and cuts the lead runner down.

Moriyama and Suzuki both hit good fly balls, but they're easy plays to end the inning.

Top 3rd
Yatazaki gets a 2-out single, but otherwise the batters for Chuukyoudai Chuukyou not really squaring up Abe right now.

Bottom 3rd
Looks like we might be settling in for the long haul now. Ueno retires the 8-9-1 batters in order, and while he's not getting as much attention Okoye is getting quite a bit.

Top 4th
Abe leaves one over the plate when it was wanted inside and Naitou gets his 2nd hit in as many ABs.

Ueno with a single of his own to center and they look to threaten again.

Kawada flies out to right, but that does allow Naitou to reach 3rd.

Abe gets Katou swinging to end the inning and we remain scoreless.

Bottom 4th
Unfortunately Kanto Dai-ichi is unable to make such headway. First pitch out for Ihashi and Itou, and Igarashi can only watch strike 3 on the outside corner.

Top 5th
Pitching change for Kanto Dai-ichi as #16 Kaneko enters the game.

Good start as he gets Nakamura on a slider.

2 down and Yatazaki with a slow grounder to short, but Itou misses the ball for some reason.

The error doesn't hurt as Itou tries to steal 2nd, but is out by a country mile.

Bottom 5th
Ueno holds serve as he gets his 3rd consecutive 1-2-3 inning. We head to the break scoreless with opportunities at a premium.

Top 6th
One down and Sugimoto makes a bid for a base hit to right center, but Okoye runs it down en route to another clean inning.

Bottom 6th
Kuroda gets Kanto Dai-ichi's first hit, a single to center. Kaneko moves him along.

Okoye goes down swinging on a changeup so it'll be up to Ihashi.

Ihashi with a foul fly. Sugimoto stops next to the camera well, reaches over... falls in...

Has the catch!!

Top 7th
Ueno with his 2nd hit of the game, a single to right. Kawano tries to bunt him along, but Kaneko crashes on the ball and spin fire to 3rd, and they get Ueno!

Katou and Nakamura are retired thereafter and the game remains scoreless.

Bottom 7th
Now Kanto Dai-ichi gets a leadoff runner of their own! Itou singles through the left side! He's bunted over and Chuuukyoudai Chuukyou calls for time.

Nagashima with a check swing chopper up the middle. Satou waits for it, fires to 1st, but it's not in time! Nagashima dives in safely and it's a big chance for Kanto Dai-ichi!

Moriyama with a fly to center! Nakamura charging, makes the catch! Itou going home, no! He goes back and now there are 2 outs!

Suzuki in a prolonged AB, fouling off pitches hoping to find one to get the timely hit. Eventually he works the count full after falling behind 1-2.

SANSHIN!!!!!

Ueno lets out a scream after he gets Suzuki on a high fastball and the side is retired!!

Top 8th
Kaneko hits Itou in the back to start the inning. Chuukyoudai Chuukyou has a chance here to get a ru in.

Yatazaki with the bunt, but it's too short again! Suzuki up and fires to 2nd and they get the runner!

They lay down the bunt again, and while it works, they are playing for the one-timer. Though one tim may be all they need.

Sugimoto clean single through the left side! Moriyama with it and makes the throw in. Yatazaki holds up at 3rd. Kanto Dai-ichi calls for time.

UH OH! Kaneko hits Naitou and it's manrui for Ueno!

Ueno grounder to 3rd! Igarashi with it! He picks it up and races Sugimoto to the bag! He gets there! 3 out!!!

Oh man, that race to 3rd...

Bottom 8th
2 down for Okoye and he grounds to short. Itou with the throw, but it's not in time to defeat a diving Okoye! (He could easily run through the bag...). Chuukyoudai Chuukyou calls time.

Ihashi draws a 4-pitch walk! That moves Okoye to 2nd as Itou steps in!

But he flies out to right and we're onto the 9th!

Top 9th
Nakamura gets on with 2 outs as Ihashi's throw is just off line.

Itou takes a close 3-2 pitch and walks! Now the go ahead run is at 2nd as Kanto Dai-ichi calls for time.

Grounder to 1st! Off Igarashi! He runs it to the bag... 3 out!

Bottom 9th
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NAGASHIMA DRIVES THE FIRST PITCH TO LEFT! YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!

HAITAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KANTO DAI-ICHI WINS IT WITH A SAYONARA HR 1-0!!!!

Where did that come from??? How did that happen after how this game played out?? I'm speechless, but not as much as Ueno is standing there on the mound.

I mean literally, that sucks. Fighting tooth and nail every inning, just hoping to get a runner in scoring position, and yet the game ends on a HR. Ueno is inconsolable. And rightly so. It feels unfair. It probably is unfair. Give him somewhere where he gives up a couple of hits and walked off, that's fine. But a HR? You're asking if it is a joke of some sort.

*whoo*.. I need some air.

Day 7, Game 4 - Kagoshima Jitsugyou (Kagoshima) v Chuukyoudai Chuukyou (Aichi)

Our last game of the day pits Kagoshima Jitsugyou and Chuukyoudai Chuukyou for a spot in the 3rd round.

Kagoshima Jitsugyou demolished Hokkai so much that it's hard to determine how good the team really is. 18-4 usually means nothing other than a general likelihood of losing the next game.

Chuukyoudai Chuukyou was quite the opposite. Against Gifu Jyouhoku they had an easy win, but it was only by the margin of 4-1, and 3 of the runs were in the 1st. There's easily questions as to whether the offense can really produce at a clip to take them deep.

15:30 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
All's good for Ueno to start, a relatively uneventful 1-2-3 inning。

Bottom 1st
Same cannot be said for ace Hashimoto. He goes the distance against Kawada, issuing a walk. But when Katou tries to lay down the bunt, Hashimoto rifles it to 2nd and just gets the lead runner. No double play though.

Katou ends up doing it himself, stealing 2nd during Nakamura's AB.

He freezes cleanup batter Itou on a slider down the middle and the side is retired.

Top 2nd
More of the same for Ueno as he just needs 10 pitches to retire the side.

Bottom 2nd
Same goes for Chuukyoudai Chuukyou. Yatazaki hits a soft liner over Itagoi for a base hit. This time the bunt is successful.

Satou singles to left, and for a change, the runner is held up at 3rd. This time with the high hop the ball took, I think you could have sent him home.

Naitou does the job though hitting a single to left makes it 1-0 Chuukyoudai Chukyou.

Ueno flies to right, but his throw to prevent the runners from advancing short hops Wataya and bounces away allowing the runners to advance!

Kawada walks for the 2nd time and it's manrui.

Katou flies out to left, and Hashimoto gets away with just 1 point of damage.

Top 3rd
Itagoi base hit through the right side, bunted over to 2nd.

Hasebe grounder to short, Satou has Itagoi dead to rights, but throws it wide! All safe! Kajitsu has a chance to tie it up!

Arimura does it! Single though the right side and Itogoi crosses home to tie it at 1-1!!

They'll play for the one timer as Andou bunts the runners along.

Ueno though hits Muroya and it's manrui!

This time it's Ueno who gives the team the slip! Wataya grounds to 2nd and the inning is over!

Bottom 3rd
Nakamura safety bunt! Wataya coming in from way back, has no play!

And no bunt from Takahashi-kantoku! He sends Nakamura instead and he steals 2nd!

Itou strikes out and cannot advance the runner further.

Yatazaki can't either, grounding to short back up the middle.

And now they try to steal 3rd! Tsukiji makes the throw, and they get him at 3rd! Oh, you never want to do that...

Top 4th
Seems like there is a lot of added pressure to score a run. Mogami gets a one out single back up the middle, and then they try the hit-and-run. Except Itagoi misses and Mogami is thrown out. It's 3 up and 3 down as a result.

5th Inning
The 5th inning goes without much fanfare with both sides going down in order. That leaves us 1-1 at the break with neither side really gaining any momentum thanks to the aces on the mound.

Top 6th
Kajitsu trying to swing for the fences it seems. Muroya gets a single, but there are 2 loud outs to center by Andou and Wataya.

Bottom 6th
No bunting here it seems now, they're trying to take the bases outright. One down, Itou singles past a diving Hasebe. He takes off for and steals 2nd!

Yatazaki single to center will bring him in! Chuukyoudai Chuukyou takes the lead back at 2-1!

Sugimoto and Satou follow that up with base hits of their own and we're manrui!

Naitou drive to deep right! Muroya to the wall, slides... doesn't have it! 2 runners score on the deep double and Chuukyoudai Chuukyou has a 4-1 lead!

That'll be it for Hashimoto. Arimura moves from 1st to take the hill. He gets the final 2 outs, but the damage may have been irreparably done.

Top 7th
New 1B Shibata starts off with a single up the middle! Itagoi not bunting, but he gets a walk!

Hashimoto lays down a good bunt and now they can pull within 1 with a good base hit.

Hasebe can't do that, but he can get a sac fly to center! That scores Shibata to make it 4-2.

Not out of the woods yet though as Arimura is walked.

Andou singles to left! Itagoi scores and it's 4-3! Can Kajitsu tie the game?

Muroya deep ball down the RF line... FOUL! That had the distance, but pulled foul!

Instead, it's right back up Ueno to goes to 1st for the 3rd out!

Bottom 7th
Katou scorcher right to Muroya and it deflects off of him and into the dugout! Bad break for Kajitsu!

And it gets worse! Muroya is hobbling and after trying to work it out he can't. But being their power hitter they move him to 1st and sub in Moriguchi for Shibata to play 3B.

Nakamura lays down the bunt, Arimura there, goes to 3rd, NO!

Moriguchi is not covering the bag and he has to go to 1st! The defensive sub hurts them immediately!

And again! Itou singles past Moriguchi and that allows Katou to score! 5-3 on an unfortunate play!

That's all they get, but hat might be all they need.

Top 8th
Moriguchi tries to make up for it with a 2-out single, but there's little you can do with that. The side is retired soon thereafter and perhaps Kagoshima Jitsugyou has finally broke.

Bottom 8th
Kajitsu has broken down. New 3B Adachi doubles to right off the padding. After a failed bunt, Naitou doubles over Hashimoto to make it 6-3.

Ueno with a ball back up the middle that Itagoi runs down. However he makes an unwarranted throw that sails high and out of play. Naitou scores to make it 7-3.

Top 9th
Kajitsu goes quietly in order as Chuukyoudai Chuukyou pulls away in the final stages to move onto the Round of 16.

Day 1, Game 2 - Chuukyoudai Chuukyou (Aichi) v Gifu Jyouhoku (Gifu)

Not much time between games, but I hope Gifu Jyouhoku isn't blown out.

C Miyakawa Keita
LF Nakamura Tatsuya
P Sumi Naoki
2B Naruse Jyunya
3B Itou Kouki
SS Muraki Ryousuke

____________________________________________________________

13:55 - First pitch!

Top 1st
Gifu Jyouhoku is in for the first time in a while, and um... 5 consecutive hits later, it's 3-0... Fortunately nothing less after that, but ace Sumi's slow curve is doing him no favors other than speeding up Chuukyou's bats.

Bottom 1st
Wow, very sloppy play from Chuukyoudai Chuukyou. Error by Sugimoto to start the game, and that's followed up by a ringing liner to center.

And now Satou throws a ball away to 2nd! Ikeo scores and it's 3-1! That's uncharacteristic of them.

Fortunately Ueno strikes out the next 2 batters looking, so no extra harm done.

Top 2nd
It feels like a "Here we go again" when Kawada singles to left. But a 6-3 DP turned by Muraki helps Sumi turn a 1-2-3 inning. Sorta.

Bottom 2nd
There's almost no point reporting on the bottom of Gifu Jyouhoku's lineup. Given their BAs I'd be surprised if they got more than 2-3 hits combined.

Top 3rd
Sumi has actually settled down. Gives up a leadoff double, but then gets a little help by Hirai on a liner before getting a harmless popup and groundout.

Bottom 3rd
Gifu Jyouhoku is getting their hits in, but they're pressing a bit. After a leadoff single by Ikeo, Hayashi avoids a double play by hustling to first, only to get thrown out trying to steal 2nd...

Top 4th
A HBP to lead off the inning comes back to haunt Sumi as a ball to center by Kawada is just out of Ikeo's reach, making it 4-1.

Sumi is fortunate to get the loud hits right at his players, as he gets the next 2 to end the inning.

Bottom 4th
Leadoff hit by Miyakawa erased by another double play. Winds up going 1-2-3.

5th Inning
The teams have settled down, but that also means Chuukyoudai Chuukyou has the better of it.

Post-break
The game is really accelerating with both sides making little progress even getting on base.

Things get interesting in the 8th where PH Mouri (hitting for Itou), singles. Then Muraki shoots one through the right side and there's a situation for Gifu to make some headway.

But before that Kawada is down due to some injury, or cramp maybe.

And before you know it, after Fukutomi replaces him, Ikeo grounds into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning...

Gifu Jyouhoku gets another base hit to lead off 9th, but again, it's a 6-4-3 double play.  Chuukyoudai Chuukyou professionally dispatches Gifu Jyouhoku 4-1. Ueno looks good, but shows he's certainly hittable.
