Day 1, Game 2 - Kagoshima Jitsugyou (Kagoshima) vs. Jyousou Gakuin (Ibaraki)

Another possible staff ace takes the mound in Suzuki Shouta. He showed off his wares last spring when he held Osaka Touin to just 3 ER in their loss. His control can still be an issue, and Kagoshina Jitsygyou's offense may be able to pounce if he has a bad day. But once again, it'll be up to Kajitsu's offense to relieve the pressure on their ace because they are far from dominating.

13:10 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
Suzuki supposedly has a slider, shuuto, 2 seam and curve and changeup. The fastball sits in the upper 130s.

He's definitely working around the zone, but the Kajitsu batters are at least working the counts. It's a clean inning with Sora the only one making good contact lining out to center. But it's 18 pitches in the 1st.

Bottom 1st
Suyama with a clean single to start affairs for Jyousou Gakuin. No bunt, but Arimura hits the ball to the right side on a hit-and-run, moving him along.

After a walk, Miyazato brings in a run with a single to right, already 1-0.

Suzuki with a ball to right center... but it's off Sasaki's glove! E8 and it's manrui!

Jin follows that up with a single past a diving Itagoe into right, and it's 2-0. Miayshita-kantoku calling time.

Top 2nd
Suzuki continues to rack up the pitch count as he cannot retire a batter quickly. Itagoe uses that to draw an 11-pitch walk with one down. Suzuki then hits Takaya on a pitch inside and Kajitsu is in business.

That is until Oitate hits one back to Suzuki and he starts the 1-6-3 double play.

Bottom 2nd
Maruyama much better in the 2nd. He does walk Suyama, but otherwise looks better than he did in the 1st inducing weak contact.

Top 3rd
Kajitsu continues to get chances. Arimura boots a ball allowing the leadoff batter to reach base. But despite a bunt to turn over the lineup, nothing materializes out of it...

Top 4th
Suzuki still struggling. He hits Sora after falling behind 3-0. Wataya bloops one just over an outstretched Arimura. Itagoe bunts them along, and it's a great chance for Kajitsu!

And Takaya delivers! It's a single through the left side! One run scores and we finally see flickers from the opposing team! 2-1!

Oitate with a clean single to right and that ties up the game! 2-2!

3 straight hits now as Yoshioka singles to left! Manrui!

But Maruyama hits one up the middle right to Jin! He spins, tags 2nd and throws to 1st for the 6-3 double play! Inning over, but the cracks are getting bigger!

Bottom 4th
Meanwhile, Maruyama has settled down. He's working the sides of the zone and jamming the Jyousou batters. He gets his 2nd 1-2-3 inning and keeps the momentum going.

Top 5th
Two down and a runner at 1st, and Watays crushes a ball to right center! Sasaki is able to hustle home and in a blink of an eye they have the 3-2 lead! It was only a single because I think Wataya thought it might be gone. Either that or he's really slow.

Bottom 5th
What seemed like another 1-2-3 inning was spoiled when Hanawa singled through the right side. And when Miyaato walked, you thought perhaps he might be spoiling his newfound lead. Instead, he gets a grounder to short and the 3rd out.

Kajitsu certainly has the lead and the advantage, but Maruyama can't let down his guard just yet.

Top 6th
Takaya strikes out as Suzuki records just his 2nd K, OH DEAR.

I amaze at that and then I see Oitate crush a ball! Ishikawa runs to the fence! Is it really! He gives up!

HAITAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big problems now for Jyousou! 4-2 Kajitsu!

Bottom 6th
Jin trying to claw back free swings a single to right.

Ishikawa follows that with another soft single to left! Is Maruiyama wearing down? Ara almost gets a walk, but instead bunts the runners over.

Kimura on the first pitch, but it's a fly right to Oitate in left.

After falling behind to Suyama, they put him on and now #10, submariner Tanimura comes in.

Rising ball for the 1st strike. Working the bottom of the zone...

Arimura skies one! Kimura behind home makes the catch and Kajitsu is out of the pinch!!

Bottom 7th
It's not over yet though. Hanawa singles back up the middle.

Miyazato with a blooper to shallow center, and it falls in! But Hanawa wan't halfway and he's thrown out at 2nd!

But the walks that Tanimura had (~7/ 9 IP) are rearing their heads. He walks Suzuki and now runs the count full to Jin.

But no! Jin grounds to 2nd! Itagoe turns to 2nd for 1, throw from Tomoya... dug out by Wataya! 3 out and once again they're out of the jam!

Top 9th
Suzuki leaves the mound in mass changes. He goes to right while #10 Kashimura comes in for Ara to take the mound. #16 Noro comes in for Yoshinari to play LF and #12 Suzuki comes in at C.

Things seemingly going downhill fast. Leadoff walk and back-to-back wild pitches.

Tomoya with a squeeze bunt, but goes foul!

He does it again on a pitch way high and somehow pops it into no-man's land! He gets the run home and it's 5-2!

It does go downhill, Sasaki's single to right is overrun by Suzuki and allows him to reach 3rd. Sora singles through the left side, making it 6-2.

Bottom 9th
Those insurance runs pretty much settle affairs. Outside of a double by Hanawa, Jyousou Gakuin goes quietly in the 9th and falls 6-2.

Suzuki never looked comfortable on the mound and Kajitsu's batters continuously ran the count high, putting him in high stress situations. He eventually cracked, and the offense couldn't do anything against a pair of pitchers who on paper seemed vulnerable.

Reviewing the projected field - Kagoshima Jitsugyou (Kagoshima)

Kagoshima Jitsugyou (aka Kajitsu) seems to back on the upswing, and when they usually appear they have some success. Plus, their schedule was a bit more difficult than Nichinan Gakuen, facing Shounan and Kagoshima Jyousai in the prefecturals. And while Kyushu Sangyoudai Kyushu should have given them a bit of a shakedown, it was Kajitsu who was doing the shaking down before inexplicably falling to Kaisei.

It seems like in that loss to Kaisei, ace Maruyama Takuya (丸山 拓也) seemed to start off well, but was relieved when his pitching collapsed in the 3rd. Tanimura Takuya (谷村 拓哉) is a submarine reliever though how I have video of him and not their ace is baffling other than just because of his delivery. Outside of the Kagoshima Jyousai game, neither pitcher puts up strong K numbers.

Offensively, it's the heart of the lineup that consistently produces. Specifially, 1B Wataya Itsuki (綿屋 樹) and 3B Itagoe Yuuki (板越 夕桂) (who has actual Koushien experience against Hokkai) who pounds out hit after hit and drives in runs. But the other team members need to get on base, and while they may not hit at the same clip, they do seem to draw walks which can help, but needs help from the other side too, and you can't expect that.

The thing is, there is enough offense out there it seems to make some kind of run. I don't think it's a championship run, and the pitching staff would limit that further.

Day 7, Game 4 - Kagoshima Jitsugyou (Kagoshima) v Chuukyoudai Chuukyou (Aichi)

Our last game of the day pits Kagoshima Jitsugyou and Chuukyoudai Chuukyou for a spot in the 3rd round.

Kagoshima Jitsugyou demolished Hokkai so much that it's hard to determine how good the team really is. 18-4 usually means nothing other than a general likelihood of losing the next game.

Chuukyoudai Chuukyou was quite the opposite. Against Gifu Jyouhoku they had an easy win, but it was only by the margin of 4-1, and 3 of the runs were in the 1st. There's easily questions as to whether the offense can really produce at a clip to take them deep.

15:30 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
All's good for Ueno to start, a relatively uneventful 1-2-3 inning。

Bottom 1st
Same cannot be said for ace Hashimoto. He goes the distance against Kawada, issuing a walk. But when Katou tries to lay down the bunt, Hashimoto rifles it to 2nd and just gets the lead runner. No double play though.

Katou ends up doing it himself, stealing 2nd during Nakamura's AB.

He freezes cleanup batter Itou on a slider down the middle and the side is retired.

Top 2nd
More of the same for Ueno as he just needs 10 pitches to retire the side.

Bottom 2nd
Same goes for Chuukyoudai Chuukyou. Yatazaki hits a soft liner over Itagoi for a base hit. This time the bunt is successful.

Satou singles to left, and for a change, the runner is held up at 3rd. This time with the high hop the ball took, I think you could have sent him home.

Naitou does the job though hitting a single to left makes it 1-0 Chuukyoudai Chukyou.

Ueno flies to right, but his throw to prevent the runners from advancing short hops Wataya and bounces away allowing the runners to advance!

Kawada walks for the 2nd time and it's manrui.

Katou flies out to left, and Hashimoto gets away with just 1 point of damage.

Top 3rd
Itagoi base hit through the right side, bunted over to 2nd.

Hasebe grounder to short, Satou has Itagoi dead to rights, but throws it wide! All safe! Kajitsu has a chance to tie it up!

Arimura does it! Single though the right side and Itogoi crosses home to tie it at 1-1!!

They'll play for the one timer as Andou bunts the runners along.

Ueno though hits Muroya and it's manrui!

This time it's Ueno who gives the team the slip! Wataya grounds to 2nd and the inning is over!

Bottom 3rd
Nakamura safety bunt! Wataya coming in from way back, has no play!

And no bunt from Takahashi-kantoku! He sends Nakamura instead and he steals 2nd!

Itou strikes out and cannot advance the runner further.

Yatazaki can't either, grounding to short back up the middle.

And now they try to steal 3rd! Tsukiji makes the throw, and they get him at 3rd! Oh, you never want to do that...

Top 4th
Seems like there is a lot of added pressure to score a run. Mogami gets a one out single back up the middle, and then they try the hit-and-run. Except Itagoi misses and Mogami is thrown out. It's 3 up and 3 down as a result.

5th Inning
The 5th inning goes without much fanfare with both sides going down in order. That leaves us 1-1 at the break with neither side really gaining any momentum thanks to the aces on the mound.

Top 6th
Kajitsu trying to swing for the fences it seems. Muroya gets a single, but there are 2 loud outs to center by Andou and Wataya.

Bottom 6th
No bunting here it seems now, they're trying to take the bases outright. One down, Itou singles past a diving Hasebe. He takes off for and steals 2nd!

Yatazaki single to center will bring him in! Chuukyoudai Chuukyou takes the lead back at 2-1!

Sugimoto and Satou follow that up with base hits of their own and we're manrui!

Naitou drive to deep right! Muroya to the wall, slides... doesn't have it! 2 runners score on the deep double and Chuukyoudai Chuukyou has a 4-1 lead!

That'll be it for Hashimoto. Arimura moves from 1st to take the hill. He gets the final 2 outs, but the damage may have been irreparably done.

Top 7th
New 1B Shibata starts off with a single up the middle! Itagoi not bunting, but he gets a walk!

Hashimoto lays down a good bunt and now they can pull within 1 with a good base hit.

Hasebe can't do that, but he can get a sac fly to center! That scores Shibata to make it 4-2.

Not out of the woods yet though as Arimura is walked.

Andou singles to left! Itagoi scores and it's 4-3! Can Kajitsu tie the game?

Muroya deep ball down the RF line... FOUL! That had the distance, but pulled foul!

Instead, it's right back up Ueno to goes to 1st for the 3rd out!

Bottom 7th
Katou scorcher right to Muroya and it deflects off of him and into the dugout! Bad break for Kajitsu!

And it gets worse! Muroya is hobbling and after trying to work it out he can't. But being their power hitter they move him to 1st and sub in Moriguchi for Shibata to play 3B.

Nakamura lays down the bunt, Arimura there, goes to 3rd, NO!

Moriguchi is not covering the bag and he has to go to 1st! The defensive sub hurts them immediately!

And again! Itou singles past Moriguchi and that allows Katou to score! 5-3 on an unfortunate play!

That's all they get, but hat might be all they need.

Top 8th
Moriguchi tries to make up for it with a 2-out single, but there's little you can do with that. The side is retired soon thereafter and perhaps Kagoshima Jitsugyou has finally broke.

Bottom 8th
Kajitsu has broken down. New 3B Adachi doubles to right off the padding. After a failed bunt, Naitou doubles over Hashimoto to make it 6-3.

Ueno with a ball back up the middle that Itagoi runs down. However he makes an unwarranted throw that sails high and out of play. Naitou scores to make it 7-3.

Top 9th
Kajitsu goes quietly in order as Chuukyoudai Chuukyou pulls away in the final stages to move onto the Round of 16.

10:37 - First Pitch!

Top 1st
It was a rough start for relief starter Yamamoto. First pitch perhaps wanting to get it over and Arimura singles to right. Next up was a walk, and a sac bunt.

Worse yet, 2 wild pitches brought both runs in making it 2-0. After that he got the next 2 out to end the inning, but it is an ominous start to say the least. Not to mention ace Watanabe Kairi was warming up.

Bottom 1st
Now that's the fight I'd like to see! One out single by Shouta up the middle is paid off by Tanno as he doubles off the left center field wall and its 2-1!

Top 2nd
Yamamoto has a simple slider curve combo, but at least can get up to 140 with the fastball. In fact he strikes out the side, including Oitachi who regretted chasing a ball at the eyes.

Bottom 2nd
Ooya with a leadoff single to the right side and bunted over.

Kanno hits a ball up the middle, but Hasebe runs it down! Spins, throws to 1st and gets the out and saves a run! Ooya is able to advance to 3rd, but Nagasawa weakly grounds to 2nd to end the inning.

Top 3rd
One out single past a diving Nagasawa and Arimura already has 2 hits. If there is a weakness of Yamamoto it's his lack of control at times. And it shows when he goes up and in and hits Andou almost in the head.

A hard ball to 1st almost goes for a hit when Satou can't field it cleanly. But when Wataya singles through the left side scoring 2, making it 4-1 it's not good for Hokkai at all.

When Tsukiji bloops one just out of the reach of Ooya, you get the feeling it's not their day.

Speaking of day, Yamamoto's day on the mound is over after he walks the next batter on 4 straight. Ace Watanabe Kairi comes in. He throws just as hard, and perhaps a little more control. Does get the last out though, but Hokkai's prospects do not look good now.

Bottom 3rd
#7 Mogami Jyunya comes in for Oitachi to play left.

I've counted Hokkai out early twice just because they don't generally show offense and the pitching is giving up runs left and right. But then Kamanaka hits a 2-out 2-run HR to right center and we've got a ball game again at 4-3. At this point neither side's pitching looks strong and it'll boil down to which team can take advantage the most.

Top 4th
Hokkai's pitching just can't keep them in the game. Leadoff walk, bunt, ANOTHER wild pitch. And Arimura collects his 3rd hit to make it 5-3.

Kairi gets the next two batters out, but this game is ugly.

Bottom 4th
Really quick inning for Hokkai. If the top of the lineup is the only part producing, it's going to be a long game for them.

Top 5th
I finally feel settled down. But the game has decided to end early. No, no rain, just a ton of runs. Hokkai's pitching craters here and what was a 5-3 game has gone double digits.

IN ONE INNING.

14 batters, 10 runs. 15-3 and there won't be much to say the rest of the game.

Bottom 5th
Other than to show how bad the game is ace Watanabe hits a batter with 2 out. UP 12. Tanno gets a run in with a double to right center making it 15-4.

Bottom 6th
Hokkai sending #13 Takahoko to hit for Satou. Subs perhaps being worked in so they can play on field.

Also, Hashimoto is mercifully relieved after throwing ball 4 to the backstop w/one down. Arimura comes in from 1B to take hill. Mashimoto goes to LF, and #10 Shibata takes over at 1B.

And on and on...
There isn't much else to say. Kajitsu not really trying adding on, but are swinging away and pounding the ball, add more runs in 8th as Arimura goes 4-5 with yet another single. They're even stealing bases maybe getting work in, and maybe hoping perhaps they can get outs that way to shorten game.

Also, Takahoko makes a great diving stop for the 3rd out after Kajitsu scored 3 more. Then collects a base hit in bottom of inning.  Good for him in this blowout.

Game finally ends in 2 hrs 43 minutes at 18-4. Kajitsu moves on but for how much longer is not certain.

Some of Hokkai's players are crying as they scoop their Koushien dirt. It was a blowout, but it was their blowout. They did earn the right to be here, even if the score doesn't indicate as such. You can only do what you can do to get here, so for winning Minami Hokkaido congratulations are in order. But their summer is over, and focus will turn to making it for senbatsu next year.

Kajitsu advance yes, but there are obvious issues. They'd better hope not to draw Sakushin Gakuin.
