Mariner Minors
Game Recaps (7/27-28/06)
I’m back online after dealing with some internet difficulties for the past few days, so I might as well weigh in on the Choo trade, which conveniently happened while I was dealing with those and didn’t exactly have time to write anything up.
There wasn’t really a whole lot of room for Choo with us any time soon. Ichiro is pretty well entrenched in right, Jones has greater potential all around, and Ibanez is doing just fine in left, and health willing, that could be Snelling’s spot too. Choo does have incredible minor league translations and plays a solid game, defense aside, but he loses the power game to all of the above and isn’t the most instinctual player in the world for how physically talented he is. He could be a lot more than he’s shown, but he has played like an average to slightly better five-tooler or, arguably, a fourth outfielder, and has done so for a few years. He’s not really the right fit for the roster, and would be wasted as the fourth guy out there, so the M’s shipped him off to Cleveland for a guy who is having a strong, potential breakout season at the major league level. We can’t forget that Broussard has done something similar back in 2004, and was mostly hurt by the serious OBP dropoff last year, when his slugging only dropped a negligible amount. He’s a legit lefty power bat in Safeco Field, and while the platoon of Perez/Broussard at DH and Ibanez in left does make it all the more complicated whenever Snelling gets the call, we have improved our weakest spot in the lineup by an incredible amount. As a prospect watcher, I do get attached to these guys rather easily, but we’re trading a guy who hasn’t quite lived up to his potential for one who appears to be coming through on his and has done so enough to warrant some good faith on his track record. We’re trading a guy who didn’t have a spot on this team, and may not be a solid contributor for a few years yet, for a guy who fills a position of great need. If you’re a GM of a baseball team, you have to make a trade like that every time. I might’ve sat this one out, as I don’t yet buy the idea that this is a playoff team (though it could end up as a division winner), but I can at least appreciate that such a move was made and recognize that, with the right moves, this team could easily be a playoff team next year. Our shopping list just had a major item crossed off, and we may have gotten quite a deal here.
New Orleans 9 (WAS + 1), Tacoma 2 (Thurs)RHP Rich Dorman (5.11) let five runs score on six hits (2 HR!), a hit batter, three walks, and three Ks in four and two-thirds innings. San Antonio 2, Midland 7 (OAK + 4) (six innings) (Fri)LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.87, W) pitched four and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, three walks, and three Ks. RHP Nate Mateo (5.65) let three more score, along with one of Mac’s runs, on three hits (2 HR) and a walk against a K in the next two-thirds of an inning. Bazardo missed his start with a sore neck.
2B Scotty Basebal (3B, 2 RBI ,.429) had a triple and a walk.
Inland Empire 15, Lancaster 6 (ARI 0) (Thurs)RHP Justin Jordan (4.84, W) pitched five innings to start things out, giving up four runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, three walks, and three Ks. RHP Jose de la Cruz (2.86) let another run score on two hits, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks in the ninth.
There was a hit out of every batter in the lineup for the Sixers. South Bend 2 (ARI + 11), Wisconsin 3 (Thurs)RHP Nick Allen (3.27, W) pitched seven innings and gave up a couple of runs on five hits (HR) and a hit batter while striking out two. RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1.38) and RHP Brian Kappel (4.50, S) split the last two innings and each had two strikeouts.

Wisconsin 0, Beloit 2 (MIN + 3) (Fri)LHP David Asher (2.98) only got one inning in, giving up one hit, before he left with an elbow injury. LHP Lance Beus (2.12, L) pitched the next four innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out four, and then RHP Roman Martinez (3.56) gave up another run on a walk and a hit batter in two innings of work. RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.75) walked one in the eighth.
The T-Rats got three hits and were struck out eleven times total. SS Chris Minaker (.265) was the only one to really do much of anything, as he had two hits.
Everett 2, Eugene 13 (SD 0) (Thurs)RHP Andrew Fiorenza (3.29, E, L) gave up four runs on four hits, three walks, and two K through two and two-thirds innings. RHP Steven Richard (3.72) walked two and struck out one in the next two-thirds of an inning, and both would come around as RHP Will Fenton (12.00) gave up three hits (HR) and a walk while striking out two in the next two innings, allowing four more runs, three of them earned, to score. RHP Ari Kafka (6.00) allowed one of Fenton’s runs to plate, and gave up three himself (two earned) on three hits, a walk, and four Ks in the final two and two-thirds.
SS Ogui Diaz (R, .233) had three hits in the game and 2B Marcos Villezcas (R, RBI, .276) had two.
Spokane 4 (CHC – 9), Everett 3 (Fri)RHP Ricky Orta (4.64) had a fine start go to waste, as he gave up two runs on three hits, (HR) and a walk against eight Ks in five innings. RHP Natividad Dilone (4.28, E) gave up an unearned run on two hits, a wild pitch, and a K in the next three innings, and then RHP Doug Fister (1.07, L) lost it in the ninth, giving up one last run on two hits and a walk against two Ks.

Phoenix Athletics 0 (- 1), Peoria Mariners 9 (Thurs)The M’s had a promising start to their second half, with RHP Clint Nageotte (1.80) allowing three hits and a walk in three innings, and RHP Chris Tillman (0.00, W) giving up a hit and striking out four in the next two innings. RHP Douglas Salinas (1.30, S) gave up three hits and a walk and struck out six in the final four innings. He’s pitched 2.72 thus far, and his WHIP is under one and his K/9 is close to nine.
RF Carlos Peguero (3B, 2 R, RBI, .300) and 3B Alex Liddi (2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .336) both had three hits, C Juan Beltran (R, .297) and CF Wellington Dotel (3B, 2 R, .243) had two, and 1B Gerardo Avila (2B, R, RBI, CS, .343) and 2B Matt Vogel (2B, RBI, .318) both had doubles.
Mesa Cubs 4 (0), Peoria Mariners 3 (Fri)Mostly rehabbers here, or entirely, if you consider Morrow out of playing shape as well with the soreness. The first four guys pitched two innings a piece, while the last one got the ninth. RHP Jorge Campillo (4.50) gave up a hit and struck out three, RHP Jeff Harris (0.00) gave up a couple of hits and struck out three, LHP Julio Santiago (13.50) let three score on six hits, a walk, an d a K, RHP Brandon Morrow (0.00) had a hit, a walk, and three Ks in his stint, and RHP John Sullivan (9.00, L) gave up a run on a hit and a K in his first appearance of the season.
DH Stan Posluszny (R, CS, .333) had three hits, LF Donato Ruiz (3B, R, 2 RBI, .190) had a triple, and SS Deybis Benitez (CS, .210) and RF Carlos Peguero (.301) both had a single and a walk. The M’s had four runners get caught stealing, but no stolen bases.
Aguirre Mariners 6, Cagua Reds 0 (+ 3) (Thurs)RHP Juan Ramirez (1.80) pitched the complete nine, giving up three hits and five walks while striking out five. That’s the second complete game shutout by a starter down there this season, with RHP Yovanny Olivero collecting the other one.

LF Greysom Berroteran (2 2B, RBI, .217) had three hits, SS Cesar Fuentes (E, .277) and 1B Pablo Orfila (2B, R, .279) both had two, and CF Dwight Britton (R, A, .262) had a hit and two walks.

Game Recaps (7/26/06)
New Orleans 4 (WAS 0), Tacoma 3LHP Bobby Livingston (4.99, L) pitched six innings and let four runs score on ten hits (HR), a walk, and a K. RHP Mike Flannery (2,.53) gave up a hit and a walk while striking out three in the next two innings, and then RHP Aaron Looper (6.13) walked one and struck out two in the ninth.
Limited power, but a bunch of hits in this one, as DH Michael Garciaparra (PO, .345), 1B Bryan Lahair (RBI, .308), 3B Hunter Brown (R, RBI, .259), and 2B Ismael Castro (RBI, .284) all had two hits.
Corpus Christi 1 (HOU + 3), San Antonio 7LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2.87) had another solid outing, going six innings and letting a run score on five hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against three Ks. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.45, W) didn’t allow a runner to reach and struck out one in the next two innings, RHP Nate Mateo (5.24) had an uneventful ninth. Like his teammate Craig James, Fillinger isn’t getting much attention for how good a season he’s having.
C Guillermo Quiroz (2B, RBI, .241), 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, R, RBI, .282), and DH Mike Wilson (2B, 2 R, RBI, .336) all had doubles, SS Erick Monzon (E, .260) had two hits, and CF Sebastien Boucher (.246) and 2B Jason Bourgeois (R, 2 RBI, SB, .270) each had a single and a walk. Hubbard walked once too, while Wilson walked twice.
Inland Empire 1, Lancaster 4 (ARI + 1)I was cringing in anticipation of this, given the previous few games, but RHP Cibney Bello (4.12, L) gave up only four runs on eight hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and five Ks in seven innings. His G/F was also 10/6, which is rather uncharacteristic for him. RHP Joe Woerman (3.00) gave up two hits in the eighth.
2B Alex Meneses (.667) had a couple of hits and a walk, though I don’t know just yet whom he might be replacing. DH Josh Womack (2B, R, SB, .294) had a double and a walk.
South Bend 7 (ARI + 12), Wisconsin 5 LHP Paul Fagan (4.71) gave up four runs on seven hits (3 HR!) against four Ks in seven innings of work, which is decent, save for the longballs. LHP Lance Beus (2.10, L) took the loss after he gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in an inning’s worth of work. RHP Juan Colon (3.72) pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on a hit and a walk, but RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.9) scored that run, allowing a hit and striking out one in the final two-thirds.
DH Ron Garth (3B, 2 R, .279) and 3B Jeff Flaig (2B, .213) both had two hits, CF Michael Saunders (HR, .231) had a home run and a walk, and SS Chris Minaker (2B, .259) and 1B Johan Limonta (2B, R, .234) had doubles, with Minaker also contributing a pair of walks.
Everett 6, Eugene 2 (SD - 1)LHP Steve Uhlmansiek (3.44) gave up two runs on a hit, two balks, and four walks against four Ks in four and two-thirds innings of work, and RHP Joe Kantakevich (3.57) scored two of those on a hit, a hit batter, and a walk in an inning and a third, though he did record four strikeouts. RHP Justin Souza (5.14, W) gave up two hits and a walk while striking out four in two innings, and then RHP Kameron Mickolio (3.52) struck out one in the ninth.
3B Leury Bonilla (HR, 2 R, E, .207) had three hits while batting ninth, DH Manelik Pimentel (2B, R, 2 RBI, .281) had two hits, 1B Joe White (.278) had a hit and another two walks, and CF Kevin Reynolds (2B, R, .111) had a double.
No Peoria game. I still can’t read the schedule.
Aguirre Mariners 12, VSL Cardinals 4 (- 16)RHP Rhonny Acosta (4.26, E, W) gave up an unearned run through seven innings on five hits, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks. RHP Leonardo Rodriguez (3.12) let three runs (one earned) score on five hits, a hit batter, a walk, and a K in two innings of work.
For as crazy as the offense seemed, the individual performances weren’t much to get excited about, probably because sixteen players ended up taking the field. 2B-3B Carlos Ramirez (2B, 2 RBI, .107) had a couple of hits and a walk, PH-RF Cesar del Rio (2B, 2 RBI, .333) and LF Rayon Lampe (2B, R, RBI, .204), 1B Humberto Espinoza (R, .289) and DH Pablo Orfila (2 R, SB, .273) both took two walks (with Espinoza getting a hit as well), and SS Terry Serrano (R, 2 RBI, SB, E, .219) had a hit and a walk.

Game Recaps (7/25/06)
New Orleans 3 (WAS - 1), Tacoma 4RHP Cha Seung Baek (2.83) gave up a couple of runs on seven hits, a walk, and six Ks in six and two-thirds innings of work. RHP Scott Atchison (3.41, BS) gave up a run on three hits, a walk, and a K in the next inning and a third, and RHP Justin Husiman (7.04, W) struck out one in the ninth.
The Rainiers got a little two-run rally in the ninth inning, with PH Chris Snelling (RBI, .247) and SS Oswaldo Navarro (RBI, .255) who had two hits, both singling to drive in runs after C Jeff Clement (H, BB, R, .241) and 2B Michael Garciaparra (2 BB, R, .340) reached base to start things out. It was a nice end to Snelling’s time in triple-A this year, and I mean the best when I say I hope I don’t have to see his name in a Rainiers box score for a long time (unless, of course, it’s an exhibition at the end of spring training and he’s playing for the M’s). LF Jon Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, .256) had a two-run home run in the first to give the Rainiers an early lead.
Corpus Christi 1 (HOU + 4), San Antonio 2RHP Travis Chick (3.27, W) gave up a run on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, two walks, and four Ks in six innings of work. LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.62), RHP Stephen Kahn (5.68), and LHP Eric O’Flaherty (1.08, S) split the last three innings, with Mac allowing a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and a K, Kahn striking out two, and O’Flaherty giving up two hits while striking out two.
Not much in the way of offense for this game, though the Missions pitchers allowed more baserunners than the Hooks did. 2B Jason Bourgeois (2B, .270) had a double, CF Sebastien Boucher (SB, .246) had a single and a walk, and 1B Marshall Hubbard (CS, .283) had two walks. RF Wladimir Balentien (.260) had four Ks.
Inland Empire 7, Lancaster 10 (ARI 0)Another pitcher to be victimized by the park, LHP Shawn Nottingham (4.36, L) gave up nine runs (six earned) on eleven hits, a wild pitch, and four Ks, and four of those hits left the park. RHP Aaron Trolia (6.05) gave up a run on four hits and struck out three in the next two and a third innings. RHP Juan Done (7.80) gave up a hit and struck out a batter in the eighth.
CF Brent Johnson (2B, R, RBI, .287) had four hits out of the leadoff spot, 2B Jack Arroyo (R, RBI, .337) had three plus a walk, and RF Casey Craig (HR, 2 R, .385) and 2B Luis Valbuena (R, .182) both had two hits and a walk. I’d say that their power hitters didn’t take advantage in the same way, but really, who’s left on the roster to fill that void? It’s not too surprising to see the team struggle like this. Of course, the pitching staff has also had it’s share of shuffles, both to San Antonio and the DL.
South Bend 6 (ARI + 11), Wisconsin 7 (ten innings)RHP Marwin Vega (5.54) was off again, giving up six runs on seven hits (HR), a wild pitch, four hit batters, and two walks against five Ks. LHP Harold Williams (3.21) walked one and struck out two in the next three innings, and then RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1.50, W) got the win in extras, pitching two innings and striking out one.
2B Ron Garth (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .277) had one heck of a return, going 4-for-4 with a walk and hitting the home run that tied the game in the eighth. CF Michael Saunders (3B, R, RBI, .231) and RF Alex Gary (R, .174) had two hits apiece, and C Travis Scott (3B, RBI, .194) tripled.
Everett 3, Eugene 11 (SD 0)What happened to RHP Mike Schilling (5.05, L)? He was dominant a few weeks ago, but he gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits (2 HR!) and a hit batter against four Ks in this one. LHP Greg Nesbit (4.70) gave up three runs on three hits (HR) with one K in the next inning and two-thirds, and then RHP Aaron Solomon (0.84) gave up an unearned run, threw two wild pitches, and struck out one in the two innings that followed. LHP Rollie Gibson (4.91) had two Ks in the seventh, and RHP Kameron Mikolio (3.77) had one in the eighth.
C Curtis Ledbetter (HR, 2 RBI, .227) had a two-run home run in the fourth, and that covered most of the scoring.
Peoria Mariners 4, Peoria Padres 9 (+ 7)RHP Cory Koliscak (1.80) pitched two innings and gave up a run on one hit while striking out two. RHP Carlos Javier (6.18, E, L) gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits, two wild pitches, three walks, and five Ks. The Ks have been there, but his WHIP has been around 2.00, which is not something I expected at all given his DSL performance. RHP Kyle Parker (5.09, E) gave up a run on four hits against three Ks in the next two innings, and then LHP Will Brown (8.78) let one more score on a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks, so no pitcher got out of this one unscathed.
DH Stan Posluszny (HR, 2 R, .315) and 3B Matt Vogel (.325) both had two hits, and C Erwin Jacobo (HR, 3 RBI, PB, .238) had his second home run.
Aguirre Mariners 3, VSL Phillies 6 (+ 15)RHP Alfredo Venegas (2.30, E) pitched six+ innings and gave up a couple of runs on six hits, two hit batters, two walks, and four Ks. LHP Jose Jimenez (2.92) gave up a hit coming in after Venegas, and all three of the runners ended up scoring after RHP Carlos Sanchez (2.87, BS, L) gave up three hits (HR) while recording only one out on a K. Three runs would score against Sanchez, one of them by the hand of RHP Yorjans Chourio (3.38), who gave up three hits and two walks while ringing up one in an inning and two-thirds of work. Big innings kill.
CF Dwight Britton (R, A, .259), 1B Humberto Espinoza (R, .286), and 2B Jetsy Extrano (2B, 3 RBI, .255) all had two hits, with Extrano getting the bases-loaded double in the fourth, and LF Rayon Lampe (2B, .204) had a double. SS Terry Serrano (R, CS, .218) drew two more walks.

Other Notes
I've been trying to catch up on some of the stuff I missed, so bear with me here...
Digging up some additional news on the twelve international signings, I found a short article from a South African paper on
Anthony Phillips. Most of the reports speak glowingly of his switch-hitting ability, but that's about all I can dig up on him, or any of the other international guys. My contacts are minimal and it usually takes some time for the word to get around on these guys.
The latest BA transaction register has C Paul Keck and RHP Aaron Cotter listed as recent signings.
Keck was already drafted by the M's once in '03, after hitting .245/.260/.306 in 49 at-bats that year at Sacramento CC. He made the decision not to sign, and spent the following year at Chabot Community College where he hit .459/.549/.733 in 135 at-bats. The same year, he played for the Alaska Goldpanners and hit .303 and slugged .469 in 128 at-bats. In '05 he went to Lewis-Clark Stat College, hit .303 there with four home rnus, and in '06 he showed up at Lee University where he hit .339, had 49 RBI, seven home runs, and twelve doubles. That's quite a few colleges for a guy who was drafted several times and was fairly well-regarded as a high schooler. The
Lee University press release suggests that he got in because another drafted catcher was injured, but the M's only picked two catchers in the '06 draft, Adam Moore and 50th rounder Tyler Sanford.
Cotter, on the other hand, seems to have been an Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevil for the past two years and was at Frank Phillips College before that, adding to the list of schools that I've heard of once. He was 5-2 with a 6.18 ERA last year, and had a 9-3 record with a 4.10 ERA this year. His numbers haven't been fantastic (.285 avg against), and I don't know what kind of competition the Boll Weevils get, but he does have a K rate of almost one per inning, and the M's may be going off that.

Game Recaps (7/24/06)
Tacoma 2, Fresno 5 (SF- 21)RHP Francisco Cruceta (4.35, L) gave up all five runs on seven hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, and four walks against five Ks in six and two-thirds innings. RHP Aaron Looper (6.26, E) hit a batter and struck out one in the final inning and a third.
2B Michael Garciaparra (R, .337) had three hits, SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .233) had two in addition to a walk, DH Jeff Clement (.238) had a couple of hits, and LF Shin-soo Choo (.326) walked twice.
Corpus Christi 4 (HOU + 5), San Antonio 6LHP Ryan Feierabend (3.87, 2 PO, E, W) had yet another solid outing, going seven innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, two walks, and two Ks. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.11) pitched two-thirds of an inning after that, giving up a hit and striking out two, and then LHP Eric O’Flaherty (1.11, S) came in and had a hit, a walk, and a K in the final inning and two-thirds.
I wouldn’t have the opportunity to speak about this game in a positive light if not for the back-to-back home runs by C Guillermo Quiroz (HR, 3 RBI, .238) and DH Wladimir Balentien (HR, .263) in the seventh inning. Wlad had his hundredth K of the season, but he also walked once, so that’s a 100/45 K/BB right now. He’s already way past his mark for walks in a single season. LF Jason Bourgeois (HR, 2 RBI, A, .271) also had a home run, 1B Marshall Hubbbard (E, .288) had three hits, SS Erick Monzon (2B, .253) doubled, CF Sebastien Boucher (2 R, .246) and 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (R, .183) both had two walks, and 2B Jesus Guzman (E, .250) had a hit and walk, but really, this game was all about the longball.
Inland Empire 1, Lancaster 3 (ARI – 1)LHP Justin Thomas (5.36, L) is getting back on track, but pitching in one of the better hitter’s parks in all of minor league baseball didn’t help. On one hand, he held them to six hits and three walks while striking out eight over the course of six innings, but two of those hits left the park and accounted for both the runs that scored against him. RHP Mumba Rivera (4.04) gave up an unearned run on a hit and a K in an inning and a third, and that run scored after LHP Saydel Beltran (3.38) came in, walking one, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out one.
DH Omar Falcon (2B, R, RBI, .264) had a double and a walk, and C Luis Oliveros (.262) had a single, was hit, and drew a walk.
South Bend 9 (ARI + 12), Wisconsin 4LHP Jose Escalona (4.15, L) lasted only three and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on six hits (2 HR!), a wild pitch, and two walks against four Ks. RHP Juan Colon (2.89) followed him and gave up three runs on four hits, a walk, and two Ks through two and a third innings. RHP Roman Martinez (3.49) got two innings after that, with a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and a strikeout to show for it, and then RHP Brian Kappel (5.14) gave up a couple of hits and struck out one in the ninth.
This game was more notable for featuring twelve strikeouts by the T-Rats than any individual performance. SS Chris Minaker (2B, R, RBI, .286) had a couple of hits, 2B Robby Hudson (2B, R, .290) had a double, and LF Kuo-hui Lo (2 R, .294) had a hit and a walk.
Everett 11, Salem-Keizer 1 (SF + 11)Signs of life to shake off that nasty losing streak, and with the way they did it… well, I think I’m going to have to plan a trip up there soon because LHP Tony Butler (2.25) started the game and gave up a run on three hits and two walks while striking out four. RHP Andrew Fiorenza (0.82, W) pitched the next two innings, giving up a hit, hitting a batter, and striking out two, and then RHP Doug Fister (1.11) came in for two more, allowing a hit and striking out one. LHP Jose Suriel (4.11) walked one and struck out one in the ninth.
It’s hard for me to decide whether the gameball should go to RF Jose Graterol (2B, R, 2 RBI, .212) for breaking out with three hits, DH Joe White (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .277) for having a home run and three walks to bring his line up to .277/.469/.426 for the season, or 1B Manelik Pimentel (HR, 4 RBI, .286) for hitting a grand slam in the sixth. Any of those choices would be solid. 3B Marcos Villezcas (R, 2 RBI, .333), C Curtis Ledbetter (R, .225), and CF Gavin Dickey (3B, 2 R, RBI, .216) also added two hits.
Scottsdale Rangers 6 (- 5), Peoria Mariners 3RHP Jorge Campillo (6.75) pitched the first two innings, giving up three runs on three hits, a hit batter, and a K. RHP Nathan Adcock (3.00, L) gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits, a hit batter, and four walks against five Ks in the next three innings. RHP Marquis Pettis (2.65) and RHP Haley Winter (9.56) split the last four innings, with Pettis letting a run score on a hit and a wild pitch and Winter allowing a hit and striking out one.
LF Jairo Hernandez (R, RBI, .600) showed up for a rehab appearance and got three hits, and CF Wellington Dotel (3B, R, .245), RF Carlos Peguero (2B, 3B, R, RBI, .297), and 3B-1B Alex Liddi (3B, RBI, .323) each had two hits. 2B-3B Matt Vogel (2B, SB, .289) had a double. The game also featured an odd substitution, with 2B Juan Beltran (.310) showing up on the middle infield and going 0-for-1 with a walk, when he’s usually taking duties behind the plate. He’s supposedly not a big guy, with some questions about his overall endurance, but I don’t know if we’re going to see him out there more often.
VSL Tigers/Marlins 2 (- 13), Aguirre Mariners 4RHP Yoervis Medina (4.17, W) pitched seven innings and gave up a couple of runs on five hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk while striking out two. LHP Jose Jimenez (2.70, S) walked two in the final two innings.
SS Terry Serrano (R, RBI, .221), CF Dwight Britton (.254), and SS Cesar Fuentes (R, RBI, .283) all had three hits and C Israel Nunez (.348) had another two.

Game Recaps (7/23/06)
Tacoma 1, Fresno 3 (SF- 22)LHP Cesar Jimenez (4.48, L) gave up three runs on five hits and five walks against three Ks in six and a third innings of work. RHP Justin Husiman (7.36) walked one in the final inning and two-thirds.
1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, .311) had a couple of hits.
Corpus Christi 6 (HOU + 6), San Antonio 5RHP Yorman Bazardo (3.30) gave up four runs on ten hits (HR) and three Ks through eight innings of work. RHP Stephen Kahn (5.92, L) took the loss as he let two more score on four hits and a K in the ninth.
LF Mike Wilson (RBI, CS, .356) had three hits and a walk, C Guillermo Quiroz (HR, PB, .235) had a home run, and CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, R, .248) and RF Wladimir Balentien (RBI, A, .262) both had a hit and a walk. Wlad’s OBP is now .092 higher than his average. This hasn’t happened before.
Rancho Cucamonga 7 (ANA – 4), Inland Empire 2RHP Aaron Jensen (6.79) got back on track versus a decent Quakes team, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits, a hit batter, and two walks against six Ks in six innings of work. Unfortunately, RHP Jon Lockwood (4.26, L) lost it, giving up five runs on eight hits, a hit batter, and a walk in two innings of work. RHP Joe Woerman (3.27) struck out one in the ninth.
2B Jack Arroyo (.333), whose name I continue to want to type out as Carlos Arroyo, and LF Josh Womack (R, .295) both had two hits, and CF Casey Craig (R, E, .379) had a hit and a walk.
Wisconsin 1, Burlington 2 (KC – 4) (ten innings)LHP David Asher (3.05) gave up a run on two hits (HR), two walks, and two Ks in seven innings of work. The Ks aren’t there just yet, but he’s been absolutely dominant for the month of July. RHP Edgar Guaramato (7.01) gave up a hit and a walk in the next inning, and then LHP Lance Beus (1.46, E, L) gave up the lead in an inning+, with an unearned run scoring on a hit, an error, and four walks.
LF Kuo-hui Lo (2B, RBI, SB, .292) had a double, and 1B Johan Limonta (.253) and 3B Robby Hudson (.290) both managed a hit and a walk.
Everett 1, Salem-Keizer 3 (SF + 12)RHP Ricky Orta (4.96, L) took the loss after he gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits, two walks, and two Ks in five innings of work. After that, RHP Will Fenton (9.00), former Husky and a Cubs farmhand until this year, made his Aquasox debut and gave up a run on three hits in an inning of work. RHP Steven Richard (2.00) had a hit, a walk, and a K to show for the final two innings.
1B Manelik Pimentel (2B, R, .289) had a double and a walk, and RF Jose Graterol (A, PO, .180) had a single and a walk. Don’t know what’s with Graterol this year, but Pimentel’s been more than solid and has hit his way into a starting role with a .934 OPS.
Peoria Mariners 6, Scottsdale Giants 4 (+ 6)More rehabbers, as RHP Clint Nageotte (4.50) gave up a run on a hit, a walk, and two Ks in the first two innings, and RHP Renee Cortez (0.00, W) walked one and struck out two in the next two innings. It’s amazing how many of the key players on the Rainiers have been on the DL this year, but they’re still pretty much in it. After that, there was a sighting of RHP Brandon Morrow (0.00), who walked two, threw two wild pitches, and struck out one in the fifth, and then RHP Chris Tillman (0.00) hit a batter and struck out two in the sixth. RHP Robert Harmon (9.95) pitched an inning+ and gave up three runs on two hits, a wild pitch, two hit batters, a walk, and a K, and RHP Rocky Collis (3.78) scored one of those, striking out one over the course of two innings.
RF Carlos Peguero (2 3B, RBI, .287) had three hits in the game, including enough triples to move him into a tie for second in the league, LF Marquise Liverpool (RBI, SB, .297), DH Stan Posluszny (2B, R, RBI, .307), and 2B Matt Vogel (R, 2 RBI, SB, CS, E, .286) all had two, C Juan Beltran (HR, .321) hit his first home run, a solo shot in the sixth, and CF Wellington Dotel (R, CS, .237) had a hit and a walk. Dotel’s been a disappointment thus far, but his walks and his power have been keeping his OPS above .800.
VSL Phillies 7 (+ 14), Aguirre Mariners 1RHP Yovanny Olivero (1.85, 2 PO, L) pitched five innings and gave up a couple of runs (one earned) on five hits (HR) and three walks against a couple of Ks. RHP Leonardo Rodriguez (3.05, 3 E) gave up three unearned runs on five hits, a walk, and a K in the next two and two-thirds innings, and then RHP Yorjans Chourio (3.60) let two more cross the plate on two hits, two wild pitches, a walk and a K.
There wasn’t any power shown by the offense, but DH Humberto Espinoza (R, .277) and C Israel Nunez (.341) both had a couple of hits. CF Dwight Britton (.243) had a hit and a walk.
