Tacoma 3, Sacramento 8 (OAK)
RHP Gil Meche (3.83) started the game and had another decent outing, I guess, going six innings and giving up three runs on three hits (2 HR!), two wild pitches, and five walks against five strikeouts. LHP Randy Williams (3.61, L) gave up the game-winning runs via an inning where he allowed four runs on three hits and three walks. RHP Andy Shibilo (11.88) had a walk and a hit in the eighth, but surprisingly, that run was unearned. CF Jamal Strong (2B, CS, .303) and 3B Greg Dobbs (2B, HR, .273) both had two hits, while DH Bucky Jacobsen (HR, .331) and C Ben Davis (HR, .248) provided additional power. LHP Bobby Madritsch tomorrow?

El Paso 1 (ARI), San Antonio 6
RHP Rich Dorman (5.09, W) was back to pitching well again tonight, going six innings and giving up a run on six hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch and three walks against four strikeouts. The final three inninngs went one a piece to RHP Aaron Taylor (5.68), RHP T.A. Fulmer (6.20), and LHP Chris Key (5.37). Taylor walked a batter, Fulmer did the same in addition to hitting a batter and striking out two, while Key allowed a meaningless hit. 1B John Lindsey (2B, SB, .299) had three hits and is edging back to .300. As is LF Shin-Soo Choo (R, RBI, SB, .297) who had two hits, along with RF Cristian Guerrero (R, CS, 224), who safely reached base every time he went to the plate. RHP Chris Buglovsky on Monday.

Inland Empire 7, High Desert 3 (MIL)
Kid K, RHP Felix Hernandez (2.74, W) was at it again, going seven innings and allowing a lone run on three hits, a hit batter (ouch) and a walk while striking out eleven. He's now fourth in the league in ERA. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.56) ran into some trouble in his two-thirds as he gave up two runs on three hits and a wild pitch. RHP Darwin Soto (3.86) would pitch the final inning and a third and ring up three. For the offense, LF Jon Nelson (2B, 2 R, RBI, .304) and 1B Pichi Balet (2B, R, RBI, .303) both logged three hits and got above .300, while 3B Jesus Guzman (R, .300/.404/.435) had a hit and two walks to bring him back to it. DH Carlos Arroyo (R, RBI, .343) had two hits as well. The Sixers start their All-Star break a little early and won't be back until July 1st, but Rene Rivera, Bobby Livingston, T.J. Bohn, Felix Hernandez, and Juan Gonzalez, who has been missing time with a bruised knee after being hit by a pitch.

Peoria 2 (STL), Wisconsin 1
LHP Ryan Feirabend (3.66, E, L) was hit more with errors than by his own pitching mistakes, with three errors overall during the seventh and eighth innings when he gave up his runs. Over seven and two-thirds innings, he allowed an earned run on five hits and three walks while striking out eight. RHP Mike Hrynio (4.40) went the final inning and a third, threw a wild pitch and struck out three. The only hit worth noting was CF Wladimir Balentien (HR, .263) belting out his ninth back in the third to give the T-Rats a temporary lead. LHP Thom Oldham tomorrow?

Spokane 4 (TEX), Everett 3
RHP Ruben Flores (0.82) pitched well enough to get a win tonight, going five innings and allowing nothing earned on three hits and two walks as he struck out eight. RHP Chad Fillinger (11.25) followed for two innings and allowed a solo homer, another hit, and struck out four. RHP Phil Cullen (2.25, L) got the loss with a similar performance, minus a hit and a strikeout. 1B Brandon Green (2B, 2 RBI, .320) had three hits on the night, while 2B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, R, SB, .275) and LF Trevor Heid (2B, RBI, .250) contributed some additional extra-base hits. PH Thomas Hubbard (.000) hade his Aquasox debut as a pinch-hitter after Lahair was moved to Wisconsin, but he just flew out. Also, Asdrubal Cabrera hasn't played in a few games and I don't really know why. LHP Shawn Nottingham tomorrow.

Tacoma 4, Fresno 3 (SF) (twelve innings)
RHP Jeff Harris (2.86) is still in the rotation, and went five and a third innings allowing two runs on five hits, a wild pitch, and awalk with two strikeouts. LHP Tim Christman (4.66) then went an inning with two hits and two strikeouts. In the eighth, RHP Scott Atchison (3.95) would give up the tying run, going three and two-thirds innings overall with three each of hits, walks, and strikeouts. RHP Jared Hoerman (7.84, W) pitched with some effectiveness in the eleventh, two hits and a strikeout, to pick up the win as LHP George Sherrill (2.59, S) slammed the door with a strikeout in the twelfth. Ordinarily, I don't list one-hit performances first, but DH Bucky Jacobsen (HR, 3 RBI, .331) is forcing me to, as he went 1-2, walking four times, once intentionally. So then, in the two-hit crowd, we had RF Elpidio Guzman (2 R, SB, .281), 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, RBI, .286), who did everythign of note in the twelfth, and 3B Greg Dobbs (.250). C Ben Davis (2B, .248) was also 1-3 with a walk. I have no idea who is pitching today, but I'm hoping it's LHP Bobby Madritsch and that he's back for good. SportsNetwork is listing RHP Joel Hanrahan for both Tacoma and Las Vegas, but I'm not sure that they're smart enough to know something that the papers don't.

El Paso 3 (ARI), San Antonio 4
LHP Phil Devey (3.50) had a pretty solid start, going six and a third innings and giving up a run on six hits, a hit batter, and a walk with seven strikeouts. RHP Renee Cortez (5.57) filled in for the next four outs and got a punchout from it before giving way to LHP Tim Rall (3.95), who gave up a solo shot and a walked a batter without recording an out. RHP David Gil (3.86) gave up two hits, scoring Rall's other run, and struck out two, which would have left Rall in line for the loss if not for the offense rallying. Speaking of, not much to it, LF Shin-Soo Choo (HR 2 R, 3 RBI, .295) doing most of the damage, including a single to drive in the tying run in the ninth and two-run home run earlier to break up the no-hitter. There's your fifth tool. 1B John Lindsey (2B, RBI, .292) would drive him in to win the game with two outs in the ninth. RHP Rich Dorman tonight.

Inland Empire 8, High Desert 5 (MIL)
Well, it wasn't exactly the good LHP Bobby Livingston (3.32, E) pitching last night, as he went seven innings and gave up five runs on seven hits (2 HR!) and a walk with five punchouts. Aside from a hit and a walk, LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.53, W) pretty much slammed the door in the two frames that followed, getting a two strikeouts along the way. The Sixers won this with a seven run outburst in the top of the ninth. Lots of one-hit performances did it though, including a three-run homer by CF Gary Harris (HR, 3 RBI, .275) and a two-run shot by RF T.J. Bohn (HR, 2 RBI, .284). C Brian Lentz (3B, R, 2 RBI, .259) was the only Sixer with two hits. In a roster note, IF Taylor Pullins was released and replaced by SS Erick Monzon (.000) moving up from Peoria to go 0-5 with three strikeouts. RHP Felix Hernandez tomorrow.

Peoria 2 (STL), Wisconsin 7
However, it was the good RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.32,) pitching last night, going six inning and allowing a run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. RHP Brad Rose (18.00) followed and gave up a run on a solo shot in addition to two walks and a strikeout, and it lowered his ERA.... RHP Kenly Chang (4.42) got two strikouts in the ninth to seal it. For the offense, yes, SS Adam Jones (3B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .265) is hitting hot and has been for a while (three hits last night). LF Josh Womack (R, RBI, .277) also picked up two hits, while 1B Chris Collins (2B, R, 2 RBI, .242) and 3B Eric Blakeley (3B, R, RBI, .329) provided the extra-base hits. LHP Ryan Feierabend today.

Everett 7, Yakima 8 (ARI)
Well, it wasn't entirely RHP Ivan Blanco's (16.20) fault this time. He went three innings last night and gave up SIX runs on on seven hits (2 HR!) with two walks and three strikeouts. Apparently, he hasn't been able to locate his fastball, or so I've heard. LHP Brandon Perry (3.38) went the next three innings giving up nothing earned on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. RHP Mumba Rivera (1.93) gave up a run on a hit and a walk, though LHP Vance Hall (2.25) gave up that run, partially due to a wild pitch in his two-thirds. C Omar Falcon (HR, 3 R, .381) and RF Elvis Cruz (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, E, .350) were both kicking ass last night, both with three hits including their first home runs. DH Josh Ellison (2B, RBI, .400) also had two hits on the night. RHP Ruben Flores today.

Arizona Brewers 3, Peoria Mariners 4
A recent import from the VSL, Columbian LHP Julio Santiago (0.00) went only two innings (can't tell you why) allowing two hits, an unearned run, and striking out two. He was followed by RHP Tyrone Lamont (0.00), who I believe is the pitcher signed out of South Africa earlier in the year. He had a good pro debut, going four innings, allowing three hits, and unearned run, and striking out one (noticing a pattern here?). RHP Stephen Grasley (0.00, W) the non-drafted from Creighton, went the final three innings, allowed another three hits, another unearned run, and struck out four. For the offsense, 2B Francisco Gerez (2 R, RBI, 2 SB, CS, .467) was 3-4 and I'm already starting to believe he's wasted at this level. Hopefully, he'll find some way up the ladder soon. RF Thomas Hubbard (RBI, SB, .500) had two hits in his pro debut and arguably, the same thing could soon be said for him. Draft-and-follow signing C Danny Santin (2B, RBI, .333) continues to impress with yet another extra-base hit, not to mention catching a runner stealing. Also of note, sixth-round pick PR Jermaine Brock (R, .000) made his debut as a pinch-runner. I like Brock, he's Jamal Strong, only left-handed, with some pop, and has a throwing arm. They have the night off today in Peoria, but I expect they'll be back tomorrow.

Tronconero #1 8 (PHI), Aguirre 6
RHP Jorge Acosta (4.43, L) wasn't his usual self last night, going only three and a third innings and giving up five earned on eight hits. RHP Felix Correa (1.31) followed with three and two-thirds innings that saw two runs cross the plate on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts, overall. The final two innings were split between RHP Daniel Yerovi (2.57) and RHP Carlos Figueroa (6.30), Yerovi allowing a hit and Figueroa striking out one. SS Deybis Benitez (2B, R, E, .275) led the team with four hits, though DH Gerardo Avila (2B, 2 RBI, .333) and 3B Humberto Espinoza (RBI, E, .266) also contributed two. 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, 2 RBI, .380) only had two at-bats before leaving the game, but he seemed to make the most of them.

Back with some updates on the Santo Domingo team, they've gone 8-1 since last I had info. Ronald Garth is still tops in the division with his .418 average, second in runs scored with fifteen, third in hits with twenty-three, and third in stolen bases with eight. Manelik Pimentel is still second at .375 and is tied for the lead in homers with three. Leury Bonilla is fifth in batting with a .343 average, third in runs with thirteen, second in RBI with fourteen, and tied with Garth in hits. Juan Beltran is ninth in batting at .333. Some new names have jumped into the offensive categories as well, with Donato Ruiz tied for third with eleven RBIs and Alejandro Payano tied for fourth in home runs with two. On the pitching end, a number of pitchers are tied for the lead in winning percentage, Sterling Soto (3-0), Eddy Fernandez (3-0), Juan Zapata (2-0), Jael Luna (2-0), and Natividad Dilone (2-0). Fernandez is still the leader with twenty-nine strikeouts in twenty and a third innings, Luna is tied for fourth with twenty-four in twenty-one. Jesus Mateo and Victor Perez are both tied for the lead with two saves.

Tacoma Rainiers: 41-31, .569, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 32-41, (2-1, 2nd half) .438 (.667), T-1st in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 42-33 (3-2), .562 (.600), 3 GB CAL South
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 32-39 (1-1), .451 (.500), 1 GB in MWL Western
Everett Aquasox: 6-2, .750, 1st in NWL West

Tacoma 5, Fresno 6 (SF)
Wouldn't you figure... LHP Craig Anderson (6.24) pitches well, but the bullpen gives the game up. Anderson went five and a third innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts. LHP Randy Williams (2.83) was fairly solid at the beginning of his two innings, but gave up two runs in the ninth, two hits and a walk with a strikeout overall. LHP George Sherrill (2.66, L) allowed one of those runs and two of his own to score in the final two-thirds of an inning, on three hits overall. I guess that officially puts his three-peat as an ITP Pitcher of the Month out of the question, but since Sid is on vacation, I can't tell you what happened exactly or why. DH Bucky Jacobsen (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .329) continues to hit, 2-3 tonight, while many, Steve among them, continue to wonder why he isn't taking his show to the majors. Meanwhile, in an enigma of similar sorts, SS Justin Leone (HR, 2 RBI, .270) hits another home run to the rejoicing of... Rainiers fans. CF Jamal Strong (.305) was pulled from the game after two at-bats; details later, provided there are any. LHP Matt Thornton tomorrow, apparently.

El Paso 4 (ARI), San Antonio 7
RHP Juan Done (5.69, W) continues to be one of the more reliable pitchers on the Missions staff (not saying much), going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and three walks against four strikeouts. LHP Jared Thomas (1.53) continued his string of good performances with two innings that saw a hit, two walks, and three strikeouts. RHP Rick Guttormson (4.30) allowed a run on a hit and a walk in the ninth, so no, he didn't qualify for the save. The three through six hitters in the Missions lineup, LF Shin-Soo Choo (2B, R, RBI, 2 SB, .292), 1B John Lindsey (R, RBI, .293), C Ryan Christianson (2B, R, CS, .279), and RF Cristian Guerrero (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .220) all went two-for. In the two, seven, and eight spots in the lineup, respectively, 3B Hunter Brown (3B, R, RBI, .292), DH Luis Oliveros (2B, RBI, .258), and 2B Rob Gandolfo (2B, .232) all had extra-base hits. LHP Phil Devey tomorrow.

Inland Empire 4, High Desert 9 (MIL)
The bad RHP Juan Sandoval (4.92, L) showed up tonight and went five frames while giving up seven earned on nine hits (3 HR!!), plunking a batter, balking, and striking out five. LHP Miguel Martinez (6.11) pitched the final three innings giving up a solo shot, three meaningless walks, and three punchouts. For the offense, 3B/SS Jesus Guzman (.301/.400/.440), LF/1B Jon Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, .299), RF T.J. Bohn (RBI, .283), and 1B/3B Matt Hagen (SB, .219) had two hits each, but with so few extra-base hits, DH Pichi Balet (2B, R, .295) hitting the only other one, it's no real surprise that the Sixers lost. LHP Bobby Livingston tomorrow!

Peoria 7 (STL), Wisconsin 1
LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.53, L) just didn't seem to have his first-half form tonight, goign six and a third innings and allowing five earned on five hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk against six strikeouts. Two of those runs came under the watch of RHP Juan Ovalles (5.65), who allowed a hit and rung up a batter in his two-thirds. RHP Bryan Heaston (6.69) would allow a run of his own on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in the eighth (where is the first month's Heaston?), but surprisingly, LHP Casey Abrams (14.00) got out of the ninth unscathed with two strikeouts, despite giving up a hit and a walk himself. Still, not much offense for Wisconsin; 2B Nick Orlandos (2B, .333) and C Chris Collins (RBI, .242) both had two hits and PH Eric Blakeley (2B, .329) had a double in his only at-bat, but there wasn't much else. Also, CF Wladimir Balentien (E, .262) was removed from the game after being hit by a pitch. Hopefully, that's nothing major. RHP Nibaldo Acosta tomorrow.

Everett 12, Yakima 2 (ARI)
The Aquasox continue to wreak havoc on the Northwest League, but hey, pitching first. LHP Kendall Bergdall (0.82, E, W) had another fine outing, going six innings and allowing his run on two hits, a hit batter, and two walks with another two strikeouts. RHP Kenny Falconer (8.10) had a hit and a strikeout in the seventh, before RHP Jon Lockwood (4.50) and gave up hits run on a hit, a hit batter, and a walk. RHP Joe Woerman (4.91) pitched the ninth and capped the game with a strikeout. The real action was in the batter's box, at least for 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, 2 R, 4 RBI, .458), who was three-for-three before the Sox decided to show mercy and pull him from the game. No one else had multiple-hits, but the other doubles were had by CF Brent Johnson (2B, 2 R, .400), RF Mike Wilson (2B, R, 2 RBI, .125), and C Omar Falcon (2B, R, 2 RBI, .278). RHP Ivan Blanco tomorrow.

Peoria Mariners 5, Arizona Rangers 15
Can't say the same thing for Peoria, but Everett struggled with their third game too. RHP Roman Martinez (27.00, L) started things out with a downright horrible debut, six earned runs on four hits, a wild pitch, and six walks against three strikeouts. RHP Jason Snyder (0.00), a seventeenth-round pick last year, went the next two innings with three strikeouts. RHP Terry Forbes (0.00) pitched the fifth and had a strikeout, but things collapsed when RHP Cardoza Tucker (18.00) gave up four runs on four hits (2 HR!) and a walk with three strikeouts in just and inning and a third. RHP Tim Dorn (0.00) gave up two walks, a wild pitch, and struck out two in the two-thirds that followed, but I don't know how he might have contributed to the inheritted runners. LHP Michael Ciccotelli (18.00) caught whatever bit Tucker in the eighth because he gave up an identitcal line, minus the homers, the walk, two of the strikeouts, and throw a wild pitch in there just for good measure. 2B Erick Monzon (R, .417) and DH Danny Santin (2B, R, RBI, .375) both had two hits, while CF Francisco Gerez (2B, 2 RBI, .364) and 1B Cesar Quintero (2B, .333) contributed the other extra-basers. There is a game tomorrow, but no info on who is pitching.

Aguirre 1, Venoco #1 3 (HOU)
RHP Marwin Vega (3.60, L) gave up all the runs, though only one was earned, in his four and two-thirds innings of work. He allowed six hits, two wild pitches, and a walk while striking out two (a little bit of rust...). LHP Jose Jimenez (2.20) went the next inning and a third with a hit, a walk, and a strikeout, both of his runners reaching when he started the seventh. RHP Kelvin Alarcon (2.51) went the final two innings, allowing a walk and striking out two. If Hell itself freezes over, 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, R, .377) will collect at least two hits that day (three, in this particular instance). The only other hits by the Aguirre team were both for extra-bases, coming via the bats of DH Humberto Espinoza (2B, RBI, .254) and 1B Pablo Orfila (3B, .220).

Tacoma Rainiers: 40-31, .563, 1st in PCL North

I'm starting to finish these later in the interest of keeping the Arizona League recaps with everything else and not leaving it blank until I get around to it the next day... Unfortunately, this first time around, it seems like they've goofed on the Inland Empire box score anyway...

Tacoma 7, Fresno 0 (SF)
What's this, strong pitching by RHP Gustavo Martinez (4.13, W) AND RHP Jared Hoerman (8.24)? Martinez went seven innings tonight and had nine hits, a walk, and four strikeouts, while Hoerman pitched the last two and had a hit and two strikeouts. The Rainiers had two stellar 4-5 performances from RF Elpidio Guzman (2 R, SB, .284) and DH Bucky Jacobsen (2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .325), who was apparently none too pleased about SS/3B Justin Leone (RBI, .270) taking over the lead in homers. LF Greg Jacobs (2 2B, .262) continued to hit as well, which is good to see. Looks like LHP Craig Anderson is pitching tomorrow...

El Paso 4 (ARI), San Antonio 1
RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.16) made his first start since coming off the DL and went four innings allowing a run on seven hits and a walk with five punchouts. The bullpen was shakey after that; RHP Aaron Taylor (6.75, L) got the loss by giving up two runs on two hits (HR) with a strikeout in a third of an inning, and RHP David Gil (6.75) gave up a run on two hits and the only out he recorded was on the strikeout. Things settled after that, and LHP Tim Rall (3.51) didn't give up a run despite a hit and four walks in his two and a third innings, where he rung up three. RHP T.A. Fulmer (6.46) closed out the game with a hit and two strikeouts in his inning and a third. That's right, Fulmer was pitching out of the bullpen, and the Missions have now moved to a four-man rotation, according to the paper. For what little offense there was, LF Shin-Soo Choo (RBI, .287) had two hits. RHP Juan Done tomorrow.

Inland Empire 11, Lake Elsinore 0 (SD)
What I can tell you is pretty much this, LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.27, W) pitched seven innings, LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.70) and RHP David Viane (4.09) pitched one each. Matt Hagen had a grand slam, Jesus Guzman drove in two and scored one, Pichi Balet scored two, and Carlos Arroyo (R, RBI, .345) was 3-6. RHP Juan Sandoval tomorrow.

Everett 9, Yakima 6 (ARI)
RHP Aaron Jensen (1.80, W) went five innings tonight, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. RHP Kenny Falconer (11.57) was not as effective, as he gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in just a third of an inning before giving way to RHP Mumba Rivera (0.00), who continues to pitch well in addition to having a fun name to say, going an inning and two-thirds, walking one, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out two. LHP Brandon Perry (7.71) had a solid one-inning outing with a walk and strikeout, before giving the ball to RHP Joseph Woerman (6.75), who went two-thirds and gave up an unearned run on two walks before LHP Vance Hall (2.70, S) dug him out for the final third and the save. Let's start out with this for the offense: team batting average, .329. Spokane is still next, at .269. 3B Brent Johnson (3R, SB, .455) and LF Trevor Heid (2B, 2 RBI, .286) both went 3-5, so I guess they're all right. SS Yung-Chi Chen (3 R, RBI, SB, CS, 2 E, .346) 2B/1B Brandon Green (2B, 2 RBI, E, .286) don't look like they're fazed by what happens on the field, as they committed three of the teams four errors, but both had two hits, Chen going 2-3 with a couple of walks. He really belongs at a higher level. LHP Kendall Bergdall tomorrow.

Peoria Mariners 3, Mesa Angels 0 (ANA)
RHP Oliver Arias (0.00, W) went five innings allowing four hits, walking two, and striking out four. Not bad, for a fiftieth rounder. Tenth-round pick RHP Eric Carter (0.00) pitched the next two innings with a hit and a strikeout before giving way to one inning each of RHP Matthew Sundstrom (0.00) and a rehabbing RHP Mike Steele (0.00), who had one hit and two hits plus three strikeouts, respectively. The M's had 2-4 performances tonight from CF Francisco Gerez (.429), DH Jeff Flaig (2B, RBI, .333), and LF Joe Jacobitz (3B, .333). C Danny Santin (2B, RBI, .250), a twenty-third round pick last year, also had a pretty nice debut. RHP Roman Martinez tomorrow.

Cagua 4 (CIN), Aguirre 5
LHP Jose Escalona (2.86, E) threw a lot of pitches, getting through just three innings with a run on a hit, five walks, and three strikeouts, so RHP Alfredo Venaga (2.28, W) stepped in and went for four innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. RHP Ronald Uviedo (3.32) came in after Venaga gave up a hit in the eighth, then served up a homer and later, a walk, in his two-thirds of an inning. I'd still expect him to pitch later in the week, possibly starting on Saturday. RHP Diomny Gaetano (1.93, S) gave up a hit and struck out three for the save in the final inning and a third. Much hitting for Aguirre, but without the usual production. LF Luis Valbuena (2B, R, RBI, SB, .363) and 1B Pablo Orfila (3B, .217) both had three hits while 2B/SS Terry Serrano (R, RBI, .355), SS/3B Deybis Benitez (R, 2 RBI, .258), and 3B/2B Humberto Espinoza (E, .255) all had two hits, and yes, they did play musical chairs on the infield.

News around the minors...

Been a while since I've done one of these, hasn't it? Well, it's also been a while since I've had some seriously good content and... oh, what's it called... oh yes, TIME.

First up, the Olympian did another article on their favorite M's prospect, 3B/SS Justin Leone. Some interesting things of note in there, for one, Leone sounds as if he's a lot more confident in his abilities than he has been in previous interviews. For another, he used to be a catcher at one point in his career, something that I did not now.

Next (and last), is an articles from MLB.com concerning the Mariners and Dodgers efforts in scouting Taiwan. The M's and the Dodgers (M's moreso) have serious strongholds in the country that are now beginning to pay dividends. Yung-Chi Chen is tearing up the Northwest League and could be looking at a promotion sooner or later, Chao Kuan Wu is continuing to hit down in Arizona (though I wonder if he'll continue to catch...), and the most recent addition, RHP Chia-An Huang is looking to be a real diamond. Someone recently sent me a link to a highlight reel of a nine inning complete game he pitched in high school and he was consistantly hitting around 92-93 MPH (topping out around 95, from what I remember) and had a breaking pitch that clocked in around 79. He was maintaining that velocity even at the end of the game, and to top it all off, he hit a home run as well. But Chao Wang, signed from neighboring China, I'm less certain about. I remember it was quite a big deal when they initially signed him (I believe that was before they even signed Wu), but he hasn't pitched very much thus far, twenty-one innings in 2002 but just one and a third last year. He's also 21 now, so his status as a prospect is probably dropping.

Just as some quick notes... first of all, I had a major typo in last night's recap and listed Nottingham as giving up five runs and not five hits, but that's been fixed now. Also, the Arizona League started action last night, flying under my radar due to the issues with SportsNetwork and MILB.com, but the Mariners beat the Padres 8-4 and the recap is now down there with the others. Jeff Flaig made his Mariners system debut in an unspectacular manner.

Tacoma 7, Fresno 5 (SF)
LHP Travis Blackley (2.63, E, W) wasn't at his best tonight, but it was still enough for the win and he's still leading the league in ERA. He went six innings tonight and gave up three runs on five hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk against eight strikeouts. You'd think he wouldn't strike out a lot of guys with his repetoire, but no, he's tied for tenth in the league (though he has NO chance of catching the league leader). RHP Scott Atchison (4.06) went the next two and gave up a couple of runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. LHP George Sherrill (2.25, S) picked up the save in the ninth by striking out the side, two lefties and a righty, though I've lost track of the actual batting averages against at this point. SS Justin Leone (2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .270) had a big night tonight going 3-5 and moving into second place in the PCL in home runs with twenty. Those in the front office looking for that big bat might be wise to watch for the rest of the season. 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, R, .291) and 2B Luis Ugueto (2B, HR, .276) picked up two hits each for the Rainiers. RHP Gustavo Martinez tomorrow, according to SportsNetwork, but LHP Bobby Madritsch is going to have to make his appearance eventually.

Inland Empire 3, Lake Elsinore 4 (SD)
RHP Tanner Watson (5.36) wasn't as horrible as last time, but wasn't as good as the time prior either. He went five innings and gave up two runs on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts. A couple of errors led to things falling apart for LHP Melvin Pizarro (3.93), who went three and a thid innings and gave up two unearned runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. CF Gary Harris (2 R, 4 SB, .290) had two hits for the Sixers, but there was nothing else of note. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith tomorrow.

Everett 5, Yakima 4 (ARI)
The M's didn't seem to be fooling around when they decided to move around LHP Shawn Nottingham (0.00, W) earlier in the season. He went six innings tonight and gave up five hits and a walk while striking out six. RHP Chad Fillinger (18.00) ran into some troubles in the seventh, as he gave up four runs on four hits (HR) despite striking out the side (and no, that wasn't a grand slam). RHP Cibney Bello (0.00) pitched the eighth, striking out one and giving another one of those dangerously long flyouts before giving the ball to RHP Mark Lowe (0.00, S) who had similar results sans the flyout. Would you believe me if I told you that Everett's team ERA leads the league at 3.00, 0.38 lower than Spokane? Then how about if I told you they had a .331 team batting average to Spokane's .263? Five Aquasox, 2B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, 3 RBI, .305), 1B Bryan Lahair (2 2B, R, .455), CF Casey Craig (2B, 3B, CS, .500), C Omar Falcon (R, RBI, CS, .308), and LF Josh Ellison (R, .385) all had two hits tonight. Of note among the others, 3B Brandon Green (2B, .222) had another double. RHP Aaron Jensen tomorrow.

Peoria Padres 4 (SD), Peoria Mariners 8
Apparently, the AZL started without my noticing. Primarily because SportsNetwork/MILB.com goofed again. I can't link to box scores as a result, not even from ESPN's affiliate... but LHP Paul Fagan (3.60, W) started and went five innings and allowed two runs on six hits and two walks and a lone strikeout. RHP Cardoza Tucker (10.80) went the next inning and two-thirds, giving up two runs on four hits and a two walks with another strikeout. Thirty-second round pick RHP Donald Clement (0.00) pitched the next inning and a third with a strikeout, before giving way to twenty-ninth rounder LHP Michael Ciccotelli (0.00), who gave up a hit, but struck out the side in the ninth. What to note... what to note... the fact I can't link to this to show you who played makes it harder, but the fifth-year senior from the University of Tampa, SS Erick Monzon (R, 3 RBI, .500) had a nice debut. Twenty-second rounder CF David Hall (2B, 2 R, RBI, .250) wasn't so bad either. 2B Francisco Gerez (R, RBI, 2 SB, .333), 1B Chao Kuan Wu (R, SB, .333), C Cesar Quintero (R, 2 RBI, CS, .500), and RF Reynaldo Cruz (CS, .250) all went one-for, so now we know where Quintero is, at least. In prospect related news, the second-round pick from last year, DH Jeff Flaig (R, .000) made his debut by going 0-2 with a walk and a sacrifice. 3B Pedro Ozoria (.000) is also down in Arizona, as I expected, but they're listing him as Ozario right now (o before a... oh nevermind). Baseball America's site is reporting that RHP Oliver Arias, the M's final selection (50th round!) in the 2002 draft is starting tomorrow. I just report the news, man.

Update: At reader prompting, I have linked Baseball America's Arizona League Box Scores up to the final score. The Padres/M's game is third on that list.

Aguirre 6, Venoco #2 2 (BAL)
RHP Edgar Guaramato (3.60, W) had another start, proving that you can never tell who will start and when in Venezuela. He went five innings tonight giving up both runs on five hits, a hit batter, and a walk while striking out four. RHP Alejandro Guttierez (0.00) went the next three innings with only a hit and a walk. Guttierrez is the only pitcher on the team that has still yet to allow a run, and the .080 batting average against doesn't look too good for opposing batters either, though he's only pitched eight innings. LHP Hugo Castro (1.74) pitched a ninth that saw no action. 2B Luis Valbuena (R, RBI, .347) had another two hits tonight, but the real show was on the grand slam by C Jair Fernandez (HR, 4 RBI, .286). 3B/1B Hunberto Espinoza (2B, R, .235) and PH/DH Pablo Orfila (2B, .167) also contributed extra-base hits to the cause.

Tacoma Rainiers: 39-30, .565, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 30-40, .429, 15 GB in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 40-32 (1-1 2nd half), .556 (.500), 1 GB CAL South
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 31-38, .449, 12 GB in MWL Western
Everett Aquasox: 4-1, .800, 1st in NWL West
Peoria Mariners: 1-0, 1.000, T-1st AZL
Seattle Mariners (VSL Aguirre): 15-10-1, .596 1.5 GB in VSL Valencia
Seattle Mariners (DSL Santo Domingo): 9-1, .900, 1st in Santo Domingo Norte

There's yet another Prospect Hot Sheet up at BA. This time, two M's farmhands are on the list....

14. Travis Blackley, lhp, Triple-A Tacoma (Mariners)
With a seven-inning shutout Thursday night, Blackley is undefeated in his last ten starts with a 1.55 ERA. Should get a look soon.

17. Felix Hernandez, rhp, Class A Inland Empire (Mariners)
Younger than most 2004 draftees, Felix The Cat leads the California League in strikeouts (103), including 42 in his last five starts (31 innings).

Bobby Livingston makes honorable mention.

Tacoma 2, Sacramento 10 (OAK)
Well, RHP Gil Meche (3.10, L) wasn't as impressive this time around, particularly with his control, going five innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits, SIX walks, and two wild pitches against five strikeouts. RHP Jeff Harris (2.70) followed, as Madritsch should be back in the rotation soon, and went an inning and a third and gave up two runs on a hit and a walk with a couple of strikeouts. Both of those runs scored when LHP Tim Christman (5.19) stepped in for two-thirds of an inning and gave up two hits and two walks, leading to a run of his own while striking out one. Here's a no-brainer: if Madritsch really is coming back, release RHP Andy Shibilo (12.64) and his four runs on four hits (HR) and a walk in just an inning. For the offense, there were two-hit performances by CF Jamal Strong (2B, .324), DH Bucky Jacobsen (HR, .316), and 1B A.J. Zapp (HR, .288). LHP Travis Blackley tomorrow!

Inland Empire 8, Lake Elsinore 0 (SD)
RHP Felix Hernandez (2.86) is still doing a fine job of making opposing batters look foolish, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk, and striking out ten. He wasn't pulled for any particular reason, other than the manager didn't want to overwork him, considering his last outing. RHP Darwin Soto (4.02) followed with two and a third innings of scoreless relief, one hit, two strikeouts, before giving way to RHP Ruben Castillo (0.00) who had the same results in one inning. DH Pichi Balet (2B, 3 RBI, SB, .295) and 2B Matt Rogelstad (3B, R, RBI, .258) both had three hits on the night, while SS Juan Gonzalez (2B, 2 R, RBI, E, .305) had two. In an odd note, 1B Matt Hagen (3B, R, RBI, E, .207) had a triple. RHP Tanner Watson tomorrow.

Everett 3, Yakima 2 (ARI)
RHP Ruben Flores (1.50, E, W) went six innings tonight, the msot by any Aquasox starter yet, allowing an earned run on two hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk with four strikeouts. RHP Phil Cullen (0.00), in his first action in, what, two years, had two innings of nothing. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.50, S) picked up his first save with a hit and a walk in the ninth. For the offense, SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.412), 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, HR, .471), and DH Casey Craig (R, 2 SB, .455) all continued to hit, with two each tonight. How about Craig, who is tied for the league lead in stolen bases? 3B Brandon Green (2B, .250), a 19th round pick this year, made his debut with a double. It looks like he took Pedro Ozoria's spot on the roster, but I guess if it means Ozoria will play full-time in the Arizona League, I can deal with it. LHP Shawn Nottingham tomorrow.

San Joaquin 5 (PIT), Aguirre 2
Not at a very good day for Aguirre pitchers. RHP Carlos Figueroa (7.00, L) started and went only two and a third innings as he gave up three runs on four hits, two wild pitches, and three walks. RHP Daniel Yerovi (2.77) followed and somehow managed to give up seven hits and three walks in three and two-thirds innings without allowing a single run of his own to score, though one of Figueroa's was his fault. RHP Kelvin Alcaron (2.92) pitched the final three innings and gave up an earned run on three hits and five walks, though he was the only pitcher on the team to record a strikeout today, and I do mean a strikeout. This whole double-and-a-home-run performance thing is something that RF Jose Graterol (2B, HR, .326) seems to have down, as it happens pretty much ALL THE TIME. DH William Ortiz (2B, R, .225) also had a double. As an additional note to this game, it looked like Aguirre might have been coming back, as there was a hit and a walk in the ninth before the game was called due to rain.

Tacoma Rainiers: 38-30, .559, 1st in PCL North
San Antonio Missions: 30-40, .429, 15 GB in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 40-31, .563, 4 GB CAL South
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 31-38, .449, 12 GB in MWL Western
Everett Aquasox: 3-1, .750, 1st in NWL West
Seattle Mariners (VSL Aguirre): 14-10-1, .580 1.5 GB in VSL Valencia
Seattle Mariners (DSL Santo Domingo): 9-1, .900, 1st in Santo Domingo Norte
Organizational Record: 165-150-1, .524

The rosters for the All-Star Futures Game in Houston this year have been announced. This year, the M's have two representatives, both on the world team, RHP Felix Hernandez and OF Shin-Soo Choo. Hernandez should surprise no one, but Choo is sort of interesting as he played in a Futures Game last year I think and I was fairly sure they try to not select the same players twice. Regardless, if Choo can't get on the Texas League All-Star Team, than a Futures Game roster is great as an alternative.

I'm a little late getting it up, but FoxSports.com has a new Mariners prospect ranking, and this one seems to reflect some of the seasons being had by players currently.

I won't be reposting the article entirely because I've heard that violates something about fair usage, but I'll still throw in the usual...

Quick Hits:
* Basically, this is the same old Nageotte story we've heard before, and I still agree, because Nags just doesn't have the fastball control or velocity to be able to blow it past hitters all the time and just use two pitches. My disagreement here is about the elbow troubles. I recognize that excessive slider usage can lead to such injuries, but he hasn't been sidelined for any prolonged period of time with elbow tendinitis or tears or anything bad like that. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, just that the article is a little misleading.

* Blackley's curve and slider have improved tremendously this year, primarily because he hasn't has full access to that plus-plus changeup, or at least it hasn't had the movement on it that he's wanted.

* Baek isn't back yet. The finger injury is a sort of swelling that makes it difficult to grip the ball properly. Interestingly enough, Greg Wear is also out with the same injury.

* One possibility I don't think has been discussed is Leone at second. Depending on what happens with Boone in the coming years, it could be a possiblity. Also, maybe they should be listen Leone as a shortstop, for now at least...

* Similarly, Dobbs is not an outfielder, and hasn't been for a while. Nor was he drafted in the thirteenth round by the Mariners, they signed him as a non-drafted, though they did initially draft him in something like the fourty-ninth our of high school. I will agree that he doesn't have the highest ceiling in the world, and I prefer to regard Jesus Guzman as the third baseman of the future, if anyone.

* One interesting note I've heard with regard to Livingston is his ability to minimize the number of pitches he needs to make. In his first Cal League start, he needed 76 pitches to get through eight innings. Hence, the fact that he's tossed 100+ innings in the first half shouldn't be of any major concern because it's not as if he's worked extremely hard to get that far.

I'm trying to get all the weekend's recaps into this one so bear with me...

Tacoma 2, Sacramento 6 (OAK)
Usually pitchers get better in their second year of any league, but LHP Craig Anderson (6.56, L) has been breaking that mold. Four and two-thirds innings last night, five runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk agaisnt four strikeouts. LHP Randy Williams (2.52) went the next two and a third with a walk and three strikeouts. LHP Tim Christman (4.50) pitched the eighth inning with a run on a hit and a walk, though he struck out the side. C Ben Davis (2B, R, .259) had three hits on the night, and hey, who knows, he might continue to hit. LF Greg Jacobs (2B, RBI, .311), for whom that goes without saying, had another two to add to the mix.

Tacoma 3, Sacramento 2 (OAK)
I've been pretty harsh on LHP Matt Thornton (6.00, W), but I have to give credit where it's due. He went six innings tonight with two runs on seven hits (HR) and two walks with eleven strikeouts. Hopefully, this won't just be a teaser. RHP Scott Atchison (3.86) went the next inning and struck out one before giving way to LHP George Sherrill (2.31, S) who went two innings and had two hits and two strikeouts, though I think a three-peat for player of the month honors may be out at this point. 1B A.J. Zapp (2B, HR, 3 RBI, .285) had a pretty big three-hit outburst tonight, though overall he is still doing fairly well. SS Justin Leone (2 2B, 2 R, .265) isn't doing quite as well as last year still, but it looks like he could be getting there. RHP Gil Meche tomorrow.

Arkansas 5 (ANA), San Antonio 14
Only one recap for the Missions, as they've jsut entered the Texas League All-Star Break. RHP Rich Dorman (5.71) started and gave up all five runs in three and a third innings on six hits and three walks agaisnt six strikeouts. Ordinarily, this would prove a problem, but RHP Emiliano Fruto (6.53) followed with an inning and two-thirds of nothing, RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.27, W) had three and a third of four-hit, four-strikeout ball, and LHP Tim Rall (3.72) closed out the final two-thirds with a walk and a strikeout. Outbursts of offense tonight, as LF Shin-Soo Choo (2 R, 2 RBI, .284) had four hits, 3B Hunter Brown (2B, 3 R, 3 RBI, .297) and SS Eddie Menchaca (2 2B, 3 R, RBI, SB, .228) had three, and 1B John Lindsey (2 2B, R, 3 RBI, .290), DH Ryan Christianson (2B, R, 2 RBI, .278), and C Luis Oliveros (R, .257) all had two. 2B Rob Gandolfo (R, RBI, .230) was the only one to go hitless. With Greg Dobbs moving up to Tacoma, CF Dustin Delucchi is the lone Missions representative on the All-Star Team, so go get 'em, Dustin.

Rancho Cucamonga 6 (ANA), Inland Empire 5
RHP Juan Sandoval (4.44) is back to pitching poorly again, six innings this time with three earned on ten hits (2 HR!) and two plunked batters with three strikeouts. Of course, LHP Miguel Martinez (6.48) hasn't fared much better this year, two innings, two runs on three hits and walk, three strikeouts. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.83) had a walk and a strikeout in the ninth. The offense was all CF Gary Harris (3B, HR, 2 RBI, .278) last night.

Rancho Cucamonga 0 (ANA), Inland Empire 3
Ladies and gentlemen, LHP Bobby Livingston (3.11, W) is BACK. Eight innings, two hits, one walk, eleven strikeouts. Not much more you can ask for. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.76, S) got the save with a hit and a walk in the ninth. 3B Jesus Guzman (R, CS, .309/.410/.451), also appears to be back with three hits tonight. LF Jon Nelson (3B, R, RBI, .305) also continues to be one of the more pleasant surprises of 2004 with two hits tonight. RHP Felix Hernandez tomorrow.

Wisconsin 3, Clinton 4 (TEX)
RHP Michael Moorhead (5.04) had a decent, but still not early 2004 start, going five innings and giving up two runs on six hits, three free passes, a hit batter, and a wild pitch with five strikeouts. RHP Brad Rose (27.00) continued his struggles, well, everywhere, as he gave up a run in an inning and a third on a hit batter, two hits, and a walk with one strikeout, but the loss went to RHP Mike Hrynio (4.60, L) who went two innings and gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five. That run, however, came when RHP Bryan Stitt (3.53) gave up a hit and a walk without recording an out. Most of the offense came via LF Josh Womack's (2 2B, RBI, .275) three hits, but 2B Nick Orlandos (RBI, .304), 3B Michael Cox (R, .230) and CF Wladimir Balentien (R, .263) also had two.

Wisconsin 2, Clinton 1 (TEX)
LHP Thom Oldham (3.35) had a fine start, going eight innings and giving up only four hits and two walks while striking out nine. RHP Bryan Stitt (3.68, S) would record the save after giving up a run on three hits with a couple of strikeouts. 2B Nick Orlandos (SB, CS, .321), 3B Eric Blakeley (CS, .321), and 1B Michael Cox (HR, .237) all had two hits. The All-Star Break starts tomorrow, and your T-Rats All-Stars are LHP Ryan Feierabend and RHP Bryan Stitt. No recaps from Wisconsin for a while.

Vancouver 5 (OAK), Everett 9
LHP Kendall Bergdall (0.00) was pretty solid through five innings, allowing four hits, two free passes, and plunking a batter, but not giving up any runs and striking out five. Wouldn't underestimate this Vancouver team just yet, though. LHP Brandon Perry (13.50) found that out the hard way when he gave up two earned on three hits (HR), a walk, and a hit batter while striking out two. Perry's another guy I thought would be performing better than he is right now. RHP Mumba Rivera (0.00) had a decent Aquasox debut, going through the eighth and giving up nothing earned on a hit and two walks agaisnt two strikeouts. Apparently, his breaking ball was pretty impressive as well. RHP Aaron Trolia (9.00) pitched through the ninth, giving up a homer and striking out two. 2B Asrubal Cabrera (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, CS, .625) is looking to be a force from the top of the order, going 3-4 last night, just don't expect him to walk too much. 3B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .333) had two big hits last night, including Everett's first home run of the season. RF Elvis Cruz (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, .429) had two doubles as well, so maybe he's not as useless as I thought he'd be.

Vancouver 7 (OAK), Everett 3
Of all the guys in the rotation that could have sturggled first time through, I can't say I had RHP Ivan Blanco (13.50, L) pegged as one of them. Blanco went two innings tonight, giving up three earned runs on four hits (HR), three walks, and a wild pitch, but did have four strikeouts along the way, if you want a positive. LHP Vance Hall (3.00) went the next three innings and gave up a run on three hits with a couple of strikeouts. RHP Chad Fillinger (0.00) and RHP Mark Lowe (0.00) had identical one-inning two-strikeout debuts, but between them was two innings of RHP Joseph Woerman (9.00) and a couple of runs on three hits (HR) and a walk with two strikeouts. On offense, 1B Bryan Lahair (3 2B, RBI, .462) is making me try to pull the foot from my mouth, though the two-hit performances by SS Yung-Chi Chen (R, SB, .357) and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, RBI, SB, .364) weren't so bad either. RHP Ruben Flores tomorrow.

Aguirre 1, Tronconero #2 2 (NYM)
RHP Jorge Acosta (2.84) one-hit Tronconero #2 through six innings, walking two, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out one. After that, RHP Irwin Rodriguez (3.27), makign his first appearance in quite some time, gave up a hit, a walk, and hit a batter, all leading to an eventual run, without recording an out. That run came via sac fly on RHP Diomny Gaetano (2.13, L), who would go two innings and allow one run of his own on two hits and two walks to get the loss. The only offense worth noting was a triple by SS Terry Serrano (3B, .345) and, surprisingly, no errors.
