Mariner Minors
Game Recaps (5/6/05)
Salt Lake City 4 (ANA), Tacoma 8The Rainiers finally beat RHP Chris Bootcheck tonight, and as I remember he had been owning them since last season, if not longer. RHP Felix Hernandez (2.75, W) had a great start, aside from some walks and home runs. Felix went seven innings and gave up three runs on two hits (2 HR!), a hit batter, and four walks against just three Ks. RHP Masao Kida (6.04) came in for the last two innings and allowed a run on two hits and punched out three batters. 3B Hunter Brown (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .190) had his best game yet at the triple-A level, going 3-4 on the night. Three other Rainiers, LF Shin-soo Choo (HR, 2 RBI, SB, .293), 1B Aaron Rifkin (HR, .283), and 2B Ramon Santiago (HR, .241), had two hits apiece including a home run from each. Choo’s home run was to dead center, clearing the 30-foot wall, and he becomes just the second Rainier to do that, the other being 1B A.J. Zapp from last season. Perhaps he has more power than we originally thought. CF Jamal Strong (2B, 2 RBI, 2 SB, .236) came off the suspended list today and delivered a two-run double in the second. On what might be a less positive note, C Ryan Christianson (.400) was 0-3 with a couple of Ks on the night and was pulled in the fourth inning when he fouled a pitch off a sore finger, and C Bryce Terveen (.235) had to come in on a 1-2 count (and he struck out).
Arkansas 6 (ANA), San Antonio 10Another good start for RHP Juan Sandoval (2.84, W), whose modus operandi still seems to be give up some hits, K some guys, and don’t walk many batters. Sandoval went six innings and gave up four runs (two earned) after seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Two of those hits and a walk came in the seventh, and he was pulled for LHP Cesar Jimenez (4.02), who let one of them score but kept the damage low. In the next inning, however, he did give up a couple of runs, and his line reads an inning and a third, two runs, two hits, three walks, and two strikeouts overall. RHP Sean Green (4.72) came in with the bases juiced, but held the Travelers back again, letting only one score. In his inning and two-thirds, he gave up a couple of hits and struck out two. Every Mission in the lineup had a hit tonight, in fact, SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2 R, RBI, SB, E, .237) and C Rene Rivera (R, RBI, SB, .312) both had three, and five others, CF Gary Harris (2 R, .245), RF T.J. Bohn (R, .363), 1B Nate Espy (R, 2 RBI, SB, .302), LF Jon Nelson (RBI, .235), and DH Jaime Bubela (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .239), had two. Yes, you are reading that correctly: the Missions had eighteen hits and only Bubela’s triple went for extra bases. Just because I can, I’d like to point out that 3B Jesus Guzman (R, SB, .268) was 1-3 with two walks.
Stockton 14 (OAK), Inland Empire 7LHP Shawn Nottingham (4.50, L) was giving up hits again, going five innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on ten of ‘em, along with a walk and three strikeouts. RHP Bryan Stitt (8.22) got the next inning and two-thirds, giving up two runs on two hits, a wild pitch, two walks, and two strikeouts. In Stitt’s defense, LHP Chris Key (2.89) allowed both of those runs to score, and over the next inning and a third, he gave up six of his own (two earned) on six hits and a K. Two of the four errors by the Sixers also happened in this span. RHP Mike Steele (2.92) pitched a relatively meaningless ninth. While the Sixers did rally back with three runs in that inning, that only takes a little bit of the edge off what was otherwise a poorly played night. SS Adam Jones (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .257) and RF Chris Colton (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, CS, PO, .183) both had a pair of hits on the night, and there was also a double by CF Wladimir Balentien (2B, RBI, .269) and a couple of walks from C Chris Collins (R, .266).
Dayton 8 (CIN), Wisconsin 4This loss wasn’t due to RHP Jason Snyder (3.60, L) pitching poorly, so much as the defense collapsing and making three of their four errors behind him. Snyder got through just three and a third innings, allowing seven runs (one earned) on seven hits, a wild pitch, a balk, and a walk with a couple of strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (0.95) came in guns blazing after that, holding the Dragons to just one hit over the next three and two-thirds innings while he struck out four. I expected him to do a bit better in the pitcher-friendly league this year, but not this well and he’s definitely been one of the biggest surprises on the staff so far. RHP Roman Martinez (3.77) took on the last two frames of work and allowed a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and two hit batters with three Ks. Roman is now striking out close to eleven batters per nine innings, which is crazy. C Rob Johnson (3B, R, .329) continues to tear it up with another three hits on the night, and LF Jack Arroyo (2 RBI, .271) had two hits. DH Asdrubal Cabrera (HR, .413) continued his hot-hitting as well, getting his second homer and a walk.
I’ll be out of town for the latter part of tomorrow, Mother’s Day and all, but I’ll see if I can pull off a double recap on Sunday.

News Around the Minors (5/6/05)
You guys are into news, right?
If you’re looking for an in-depth profile on possible M’s draft pick 3B Alex Gordon,
The Daily Nebraskan has a fine profile on him, which also includes some quotes from Mariners scout Bob Steinkemp. I’m still of the belief that Kansas City will grab him, but you never know.
Those concerned about the extended absence of 3B Justin Leone will finally have their questions answer. Last night’s game recap in the
Tacoma News Tribune (scroll down) states that he was hit by a liner on May 1st and bruised his right hand. He’s been placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 3rd and will be replaced by IF Luis Valbuena, who spent a short time with the Rainiers earlier in the season. Hunter Brown should move over to third and get the majority of the time there, while Valbuena gets the backup infielder role. Valbuena’s headed for Everett once their season starts, so he’ll be gone as soon as Leone is ready.
Reader Matt Samitore passed me this link from Southern Oregon’s
Mail Tribune, which is running a piece on Rainiers pitcher Rich Dorman. The article covers some of Dorman’s experiences in the transition from catcher to pitcher, and includes some cool quotes from the man himself.
The
San Antonio Express-News has a profile up on Missions 1B/DH Jesse Hoorelbeke, who has some interesting ties to the music industry.
Pokey Reese, as you may have heard, is going to be out for a while with AC joint surgery, but during his brief stint with the Inland Empire Sixty-Sixers, he did have a positive influence on SS Adam Jones and others, as the
San Bernadino County Sun reports. I know some are rather disappointed with Reese being injured since spring training, but I appreciate the fact that he went out of his way to connect with a few of the younger minor leaguers.
Some of the Mariners player development brass spent some time in Wisconsin recently and were quite pleased with what they saw. There’s a story about it in the
Appleton Post-Crescent, along with some other notes.
Finally, for those wondering about what ever happened to former Mariners pitcher Paul Abbott, he’s back at home helping out his sons in their baseball career, and the
Everett Herald has the story. Abbott also gets a few shots in regarding the recent Lou vs. Schilling comments going back and forth lately. It’s good stuff.

Game Recaps (5/5/05)
Colorado Springs 6 (COL), Tacoma 2LHP Damian Moss (3.68, L) had an okay start, going five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, a hit batter, five walks, and four strikeouts. RHP Albie Lopez (6.23) came in after Moss had allowed a double and a walk to start out the sixth, and allowed that run to score along with one of his own over the course of two and a third innings, in which he allowed a hit and a walk. That run scored after RHP Chris Buglovsky (3.63) came in and gave up three hits in the inning, scoring two runs of his own, though he retired the last four he faced and struck out one of them. Albie Lopez, by the way, had been on the DL with an ear infection, and LHP Melvin Pizarro was released to make room for him. And now for the Rainiers’ offense… ahem… sixth inning, RF Dustin Delucchi (R, .250) singles, 3B Hunter Brown (R, E, .148) singles, 2B Ramon Santiago (.229) out on a sacrifice bunt, LF Shin-soo Choo (2B, 2 RBI, .278) doubles, Delucchi and Brown score. Those were the only hits the Rainiers had in the game.
Arkansas 1 (ANA), San Antonio 2Perhaps the reason LHP Bobby Livingston (2.41) was held out yesterday was because of an anticipated pitchers duel between him and RHP Steven Shell, who hasn’t been great this season, but still is one of the top pitchers in the Angels organization. Whatever the reasons, the good doctor did his part and held the Travelers to an unearned run on five hits, two walks, and three strikeouts over eight frames of work. Take out the unearned run and two innings, then add a wild pitch and you’d have exactly what Shell did to the Missions’ offense. RHP Juan Done (21.94, W) pitched the ninth, gave up a hit, struck out a batter, and ended up getting the win as the Missions rallied in their half of the inning. RF T.J. Bohn (R, 2 SB, .361) IS the Missions offense right now, with three hits on the night. Defensively, he’s not so bad either and had another fine throw to get a runner at the plate. He and LF Jaime Bubela (R, .230) scored the necessary runs on a single by 3B Jesus Guzman (RBI, .263), who extended his hitting streak to seven games in grand style. CF Gary Harris (CS, .229) also contributed two hits on the night.
Lancaster 6 (ARI), Inland Empire 1Odd fact of the day: the Sixty-Sixers have not won a game that RHP Brandon Moorhead (4.33, L) has started. That’s six losses and counting. Moorhead went six and a third innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks, though he did K seven. LHP Nick Bourgeois (2.57) came in next and struggled, allowing one of Moorhead’s runners to score, then one of his own as he went an inning and a third and gave up three hits and a walk while striking out two. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (7.53) pitched the last inning and a third and allowed two unearned runs on a hit and two walks. The Sixers were three-hit tonight, and those hits came from 3B Matt Rogelstad (RBI, E, .373), 1B Bryan Lahair (.255), and LF Casey Craig (CS, .304).
Wisconsin 3, Southwest Michigan 6 (TB)RHP Aaron Jensen (2.73, L) couldn’t follow up last week’s brilliant performance, going six innings tonight and allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.35) went the last two and gave up a run on four hits and a walk with two Ks. There were more hits from the T-Rats offense tonight than the Sixers, but really the only notable one was the bomb by C Rob Johnson (HR, 2 RBI, CS, .307), his third of the season. CF Josh Womack (.323.) reached twice on a couple of walks, but had his hitting streak snapped at 22 games.
Tomorrow’s Schedule:

Game Recaps (5/4/05)
Colorado Springs 0 (COL), Tacoma 2Now that’s more like it! Three Rainiers pitchers combined to two-hit one of the best offenses in the league right now. RHP Rich Dorman (6.41, W) went the minimum, allowing a hit and three walks while striking out four, which is a season high for him, though we know he can go a lot higher. I was listening to the broadcast and Curto pointed out that one of the strikeouts came on a change, so that could be something he’s working on. RHP Masao Kida (6.20) went the next three frames, allowing just a hit and striking out two, then LHP George Sherrill (2.25, S) came in and nailed down the save with two Ks and a groundout. C Wiki Gonzalez (2B, R, .271) had a double in his only at-bat, and was driven in by a single from SS Michael Morse (2B, RBI, .309), who went 2-2 with a walk. In case you missed it, Dan Wilson has apparently torn his ACL and is now on the 60-day DL, and Wiki was called up to replace him, being removed from the game in the third inning. RF Chris Snelling (2B, RBI, .446) scored the other run after doubling in the sixth and being driven in by RF Abraham Nunez (RBI, .289).
I got a note earlier in the day from reader John Angus, who pointed out to me that I had incorrectly stated that RHP Rick Guttormson hadn’t been in double-A before when I was initially reporting about him going to Japan. Turned out he had pitched in double-A, and even triple-A briefly while he was with the Pads, and that had just slipped by me. I’d like to follow up with some stats showing how he’s doing, but it seems that he hasn’t gotten into a game yet.
I'd also like to point out right now that Devin over at Lookout Landing got to sit down and
interview Rafael Chaves recently, and has a transcript as well as a .wav file up over there. Check it out, it's tres cool.
San Antonio 4, Springfield 5 (STL)RHP Jeff Harris (3.20) got a spot start, with mixed results. He did
strike out eleven (even without Ankiel in the lineup), but he gave up four runs on five hits (2 HR!) and a couple of walks in five and two-thirds innings. RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.18, L) went the rest of the way, but gave up the go-ahead run on two hits, a wild pitch, and two walks with two Ks. DH T.J. Bohn (2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .344) and CF Jaime Bubela (2B, 2 R, .229) were the only bright spots in the offense.
Lancaster 3 (ARI), Inland Empire 4A nice come-from-behind win for the Sixers as they turned the tables and walked off with the victory tonight. LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.05) got through five innings and allowed a couple of runs on six hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and two walks against three strikeouts. LHP Miguel Martinez (5.79) was the first of three Sixers pitchers who went one and a third innings each, and he gave up two hits and a walk while striking out two. RHP Greg Wear (1.54) followed and stranded two of Martinez’ runners, but gave up one of his own after four hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and a strikeout. RHP Mike Steele (3.18, W) followed him, saved another two runs from scoring, and struck out a batter as well. The hero of the game had to be DH Juan Gonzalez (3B, HR, 2 R, RBI, .218), who made his first home run of the season count as it gave them the victory with two outs in the ninth. LF Casey Craig (2B, R, RBI, .300), SS Adam Jones (2B, R, .257), and 2B Hyung Cho (RBI, .500) were also impressive with two hits each on the night.
Wisconsin 3, Southwest Michigan 4 (TB)RHP Mark Lowe (6.39, L) had another start that was a little rough around the edges, giving up four runs on five hits, a hit batter, and two walks with three strikeouts over the course of six innings. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.24) and RHP Craig James (0.00) split the last two innings, Grasley giving up two hits, James getting a groundout and two flyouts. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, .474) cannot be stopped and had another three hits in the early game. C Omar Falcon (HR, .400), who has been doing well in limited time since coming back, also had his first home run of the season.
Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: LHP Damian Moss, at Tacoma, @ 12:35 pm PT
San Antonio: LHP Bobby Livingston, at San Antonio, @ 5:05 pm PT

Game Recaps (5/3/05)
I usually try to remain pretty upbeat in the recaps here, but tonight was really bad. I can safely say that at least two, probably three of the teams should have won tonight, but when you cough up the tying or go-ahead runs in the ninth inning… that just hurts. I’ll back off of any further criticism aside from that because I imagine a lot of guys are kicking themselves now anyway.
Colorado Springs 10 (COL), Tacoma 6On the bright side, at least they got the ERAs fixed now (I think). RHP Brett Evert (6.75) was rather shaky in his first start this year, going two and a third innings and allowing five runs on four hits (HR), three hit batters, and two walks against one K. Two of those runs scored after LHP Jared Thomas (3.77) came in. Thomas would pitch the next two and two-thirds innings, allowing an unearned run of his own to score after two hits and three walks, though he did punch out five. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (10.80, L) got hit again, though in his defense, only one of the four runs he allowed was earned, and that came in the sixth on a single and a triple. The other three runs came in the eighth, on three hits and a couple of bad defensive plays. LHP George Sherrill (2.45) let one of those runs to score on a wild pitch, but stranded the other and went an inning and a third overall with one hit and one strikeout. LF Chris Snelling (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .462), C Ryan Christianson (2B, R, RBI, .571), 3B Dave Hansen (RBI, E, .300), and SS Michael Morse (HR, .293) all had two hits apiece.
San Antonio 4, Springfield 5 (STL)A brilliant start by RHP Jon Huber (4.00) tragically went to waste. Huber went seven innings and allowed just one run on three hits, a hit batter, and a walk
while punching out eleven. LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.14) came in for the eighth, gave up a hit, and struck out a batter, but RHP Sean Green (5.40, E) lost the lead on one swing of the bat, as his own error and a walk set the stage for a three-run bomb. Green came back for the tenth inning and retaliated by striking out two Cardinals batters. Unfortunately, it was all over in the eleventh when LHP Tim Rall (6.00) gave up a double, intentionally walked the next batter, then gave up a single to hand Springfield the win. His only out in the inning? Striking out former pitching superprospect turned outfielder Rick Ankiel. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (CS, .238), RF T.J. Bohn (2B, HR, .337), and LF Jon Nelson (SB, .237) all had two hits, while DH Jesse Hoorelbeke (HR, 2 RBI, .267) and C Rene Rivera (HR, .290) added some bombs to the mix. Rivera also runner off a batter, and is throwing out 64.7% of runners trying to steal right now.
Lancaster 6 (ARI), Inland Empire 3RHP Aaron Trolia (3.38) was pretty solid, going six and a third innings and allowing just a couple of runs on four hits, two hit batters, and two walks against three Ks. LHP Chris Key (2.08) went an inning and a third after that, giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout, then RHP Brian Stitt (7.90) gave up the rest of the runs after four hits and a balk with a lone strikeout. Some good performances on the night from 2B Juan Gonzalez (R, CS, .192), LF Casey Craig (3B, R, RBI, .250), and SS Adam Jones (RBI, .247), who all had a pair of hits and seem to be heating up of late. DH Matt Hagen (2B, .111) also added a double. I was looking at the roster earlier today and it seems like Monzon is going to be headed for the DL and will be replaced on the roster by well-traveled infielder Hyung Cho.
Wisconsin 3, Southwest Michigan 4 (TB)RHP Mumba Rivera (2.79) was caught in the same sinking boat as Huber today. Mumba went seven innings today and allowed just one run on four hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. If my calculations are right, this means that batters should be hitting around or below Mendoza against him. Now if only he could clean up that K/BB. RHP Roman Martinez (3.65) got through the eighth with little trouble, but then LHP Eric O’Flaherty (3.27, L) got roughed up in the ninth, giving up three runs on three hits, a wild pitch, and two walks while recording just one out. On offense, C Rob Johnson (2B, R, SB, .306) and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (R, 2 CS, .267) both had two hits, LF Jack Arroyo (3B, RBI, .264) and 3B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, RBI, .326) had some extra-base hits, and DH Matt Tuiasosopo (.333) was 0-2 with a couple of walks and a strikeout.
As an added (self-promotion) note, I now have a couple of transactions pieces up at ITP, and am usually on schedule to do them every two weeks. The update for April 15th is
here, while the May 1st one is
here.

Game Recaps (5/2/05)
Colorado Springs 3 (COL), Tacoma 1I’m just trying to figure out how RHP Jorge Campillo (3.77, L) got through six good innings and didn’t K one batter when he’d been striking out one per inning coming into the game. Campillo’s end line was six frames of work and two runs scored on seven hits, a wild pitch, and a walk. RHP Chris Buglovsky (2.87) took the last three innings and allowed a run on five hits with two strikeouts. CF Dustin Delucchi (.247) and RF Abraham Nunez (2B, RBI, PO, .301) had two hits, and 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, .304) doubled. LF Chris Snelling (R, .458) was 1-3 with a walk and pulled off an outfield assist to get a runner at home.
San Antonio 8, Springfield 0 (STL)Pitching and offense tonight, as LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (3.48, W) and RHP Renee Cortez (4.70, S) combined to four-hit the Cardinals. Rowland-Smith went five and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out five, and then Cortez had a hit, a couple wild pitches, a walk, and a strikeout for the rest of the game. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (HR, 3 RBI, .236), 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, R, RBI, .272), and C Rene Rivera (.292) all had two hits apiece. Both of Betancourt’s came during a seven-run uprising in the eighth. Working the opposing pitchers were DH Nate Espy (R, .297), who was 0-2 with a couple of walks, and 3B Jesus Guzman (2 R, .269), who was 1-2, got hit, and took a walk. Getting on base is what ‘Sus does best, so I expect to see more of this in the coming weeks. RF T.J. Bohn (2B, R, .333) also doubled.
Lancaster 2 (ARI), Inland Empire 9Edit: 12:37 amLHP Jason Mackintosh (3.03, W) had another killer start, going eight innings and allowing just a run on four hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a walk against four strikeouts. The box score lists RHP Greg Wear (0.87) as coming in next, but he didn’t appear to get through more than a few pitches before RHP Nibaldo Acosta (8.31) came in, gave up a solo shot and a walk, and struck out two for the final inning of play. 3B Erick Monzon (2 2B, R, RBI, .277) had three hits, before being pulled for pinch runner Chris Colton (.160), who replaced him at third. Consider me confused on that one. 2B Juan Gonzalez (3 R, .174), 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, 2 RBI, .253), and C Chris Collins (R, RBI, .309) had two hits apiece, while CF Wladimir Balentien (3B, R, 2 RBI, .281) and DH Matt Hagen (2B, 2 RBI, .087) contributed some extra-base knocks. Balentien also walked twice, and is now second on the team with eight walks behind Lahair’s thirteen.
It looks like Monzon was pulled for a pinch runner because he collapsed rounding second with a hamstring injury. He had to be helped off the field. Wear apparently left the game without throwing a pitch, suffering a cramp in the thumb on his right hand as he was warming up.Wisconsin 8, Southwest Michigan 5 (TB)LHP Casey Abrams (5.96, W) got all the run support he’d need early on, and went seven innings allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits (HR) and a walk with two strikeouts. He gave up all his runs in the first three innings, but settled down to retired the last fourteen batters in a row. RHP Cibney Bello (1.17) gave up a solo home run in the eighth, then LHP Kendall Bergdall (1.69) came in for three batters in the ninth, getting one out but walking the other two. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (0.84, S) came in to save the day, getting a strikeout and a groundout to end the game. The near-unstoppable 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, 3 R, .452) had three hits on the night, while his almost as impressive teammates CF Josh Womack (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .341) and 3B Yung-Chi Chen (R, 2 RBI, .330) had two each. A couple of bombs were also contributed by C Rob Johnson (HR, 2 RBI, .294) and DH Brandon Green (HR, .250).
You may also notice that I’ve played around with the sidebar a bit. I moved the 2003 hitting/pitching calculations I did down below everything else to where the 2003 prospect lists are now hiding. I also tweaked some of the team sections a little to add schedules and where you can listen to them online. Have fun with that.

Game Recaps (5/1/05)
Tacoma 2, Salt Lake City 3 (ANA)LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.50, PO, L) got through six innings tonight, allowing all three runs to score on eight hits, a wild pitch, and a walk with a couple of strikeouts. RHP Brett Evert (4.09) took on the seventh inning, allowing just one hit after that. The ninth was split between LHP Melvin Pizarro (5.40), who walked one and struck out one in two-thirds, RHP Jeff Heaverlo (12.66), who walked the only batter he faced, and LHP Jared Thomas (4.63), who got the final out. On offense, there were two hits apiece from DH Dave Hansen (R, RBI, .308), 1B Aaron Rifkin (.307), and C Bryce Terveen (RBI, E, .267), and a double from RF Abraham Nunez (2B, CS, .278). 3B Justin Leone (R, .267), who went 1-3 with a walk, and scored in an ill-fated rally in the ninth where the Rainiers left the bases loaded.
San Antonio 2, Arkansas 6 (ANA) (seven innings)RHP Juan Sandoval (2.81, L) got into trouble for the first time this season, going just four innings and allowing three runs on eight hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against just one strikeout. LHP Tim Rall (5.19) was perfect in the next inning and punched out a batter, but RHP Juan Done (27.00) allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in the next one, which didn’t change his ERA one bit. Ouch. 1B Nate Espy (2B, .290) and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, R, .239) both doubled, but add in the single from RF T.J. Bohn (.351) and that was pretty much all the offense they had.
San Antonio 0, Arkansas 3 (ANA) (seven innings)LHP Thom Oldham (3.30, PO, E, L) wasn’t bad, but the Missions offense staggered again. Oldham went five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He also struck out five, which is promising. RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.07) pitched the final inning and gave up a run on a hit and a walk with a K. DH Nate Espy (.306) and 3B Jesus Guzman (.250) both had a couple of hits, but it’s hard to have notables with an offense that didn’t score any runs or knock any extra-base hits.
Inland Empire 2, Rancho Cucamonga 5 (ANA)LHP Shawn Nottingham (3.43, L) also suffered his first rough outing of the season, going five innings and allowing four runs on nine hits (HR), two wild pitches, a balk, and a walk against eight strikeouts, though, the damage could have been worse. LHP Nick Bourgeois (1.59) went the next two frames, giving up a couple of hits and two walks but no runs, then RHP Mike Steele (3.60) pitched the eighth, allowing a hit in on a solo bomb and striking out a batter. RF Matt Rogelstad (R, .409), playing in the outfield for the first time this season, had three hits and a walk, and 3B Erick Monzon (HR, .256) and 1B Bryan Lahair (.241) had two hits each.
Wisconsin 5, South Bend 6 (ARI)A bit of an odd game in that all of the runs, for both sides, were scored in the first three innings. RHP Jason Snyder (3.69, L) struggled early on, giving up eight hits in the first three innings, but recovered a bit, going seven innings and allowing the six runs on twelve hits overall (HR), two wild pitches, and a walk against three strikeouts. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.02) followed him for the last inning, gave up a hit, and struck out a batter. 3B Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, 3 RBI, CS, .423) looks like he hasn’t missed a beat, with three hits in the game and a bases-loaded double in the second. 2B Oswaldo Navarro (R, .253) had two hits, while CF Josh Womack (2 R, .333) extended his hitting streak, going 1-3 with a couple of walks. RF Mike Wilson (HR, .253) also hit his second bomb of the season.
