  Game Recaps (6/4/05)

Tacoma 4, Portland 6 (SD)
RHP Jorge Campillo (2.77) went five innings tonight and evaded trouble, giving up just two runs despite six hits (HR), a wild pitch, five walks, and just one strikeout. RHP Sean Green (6.00) went the next two and gave up a couple after two hits, a wild pitch, and a walk, one of the hits and the walks coming in the ninth, and then RHP Masao Kida (4.89, L) came in, scored both of Green’s runs, and gave up two more of his own on two hits and hit a batter in the ninth to give Portland the victory. Yeah, I’m not liking this Kida closer thing at all anymore. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (.286) was the only Rainier with two hits on the night, but DH Miguel Olivo (HR, 2 RBI, .091) and 2B Ramon Santiago (HR, 2 RBI, .238) both had two-run home runs. I did not expect to be typing that out. The Rainiers also turned four double plays, so that was pretty cool.

San Antonio 6, Wichita 7 (KC) (eight innings)
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.47) started the doubleheader and gave up four runs (three earned) in five and a third innings, despite eleven hits and a walk plus two Ks. LHP Tim Rall (3.63) got the next out and surprisingly, did not give up a run despite a hit and a walk, then RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.89, E) let one inherited run and two of his own runs to score over the next inning and a third, giving up two hits, two walks, a wild pitch, and two strikeouts. I would like Fruto to find some consistency, but I have been hoping for years now. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.45, L) would not record an out in the eight and give up a run on two hits and a walk. 3B Jesus Guzman (R, .280), SS Eddie Menchaca (R, CS, .190), and 2B Eric Blakeley (R, RBI, SB, .226) all had two hits apiece, and LF Jaime Bubela (2B, R, RBI, .251) had a double. PR Casey Craig (CS, .000) got into a game as a pinch runner and was caught stealing. He is still alive!

San Antonio 5, Wichita 0 (KC) (seven innings)
RHP Jon Huber (4.65, W) had a slick performance tonight, going all seven innings in this one and only allowing runners to reach via two hits and a walk while he struck out four. LF Jaime Bubela (R, SB, .257) and CF Gary Harris (RBI, .263) both had two hits, while 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, .279) and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, R, 3 RBI, .251) provided a little bit of power.

Inland Empire 8, Lake Elsinore 9 (SD)
RHP Mumba Rivera (9.64) had a rough time in his first Cal League start, maybe due to the time off, but he gave up five runs on five hits (HR), two hit batters, and five walks against three strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.83) had a hit and a walk with two strikeouts over the next two frames, but RHP Mike Steele (3.68, L) blew it by giving up four runs on five hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against two strikeouts over the next inning and two-thirds. DH Carlos Arroyo (2B, RBI, .356) had another three hits and SS Adam Jones (2B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .312) and 1B Bryan LaHair (HR, 2 RBI, .291) had two (and Jones had two walks), while 2B Matt Rogelstad (2B, R, RBI, .318), 3B Erick Monzon (HR, .321), and RF Chris Colton (2B, R, CS, .230) added extra-base hits.

Southwest Michigan 3 (TB), Wisconsin 7
RHP Mark Lowe (5.13) only went through three and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. He was pulled after trying to stop a line drive with his pitching hand. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.41, W) went the next two and a third, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three, and then RHP Stephen Grasley (4.50) pitched an inning plus and gave up two runs on four hits with a strikeout. RHP Ivan Blanco (0.00) was perfect again in the ninth, and RHP Craig James (0.41) struck out two in the ninth. The T-Rats had two hits from 3B Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, .333) and an extra-base hit from SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, R, RBI, .305), so this was really a case of them making the most of their opportunities.

Aguirre, rain, yeah.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:

  Game Recaps (6/3/05)

Tacoma 3, Sacramento 6 (OAK)
RHP Felix Hernandez (2.74, L) got through six innings tonight, allowing two runs on three hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against eight Ks. He might have gotten off with the no-decision, but RHP Chris Buglovsky (6.48) gave up four runs on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts over the next two innings. LF Shin-soo Choo (.284), RF Chris Snelling (SB, RBI, .399), and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2B, .222) all had two hits, but there wasn’t much else worth noting.

San Antonio’s game was postponed due to rain.

Inland Empire 2, Lake Elsinore 10 (SD)
LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.84, L) struggled, to say the least, giving up nine runs on eleven hits and a walk against a pair of strikeouts in just four and two-thirds innings. RHP Oliver Arias (6.14) followed with two and third innings, and let one of Mac’s runs score but none of his own after three hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.47), who I guess is pitching out of the pen now, gave up a run on a hit (HR) and three walks with two strikeouts. On offense, CF Wladimir Balentien (2B, 3B, R, RBI, .298) had two extra-base hits, and 3B Matt Rogelstad (2B, .319) and RF B.J. Garbe (2B, .268) both had doubles. Not much going on here in terms of offense either (get used to it, it’s a recurring theme today).

Wisconsin 0, Cedar Rapids 2 (ANA)
LHP Casey Abrams (5.13) pitched seven innings this time and only gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits (HR) and four walks against two Ks. I keep thinking he’s going to get pulled, and then he does something like this. But if/when he does get pulled, I’d like to see RHP Ivan Blanco (0.00), who struck out two in the ninth, take his spot. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, .329) doubled, and CF Brent Johnson (3B, .222) had two hits in the game.

Tronconero #1 2 (PHI), Aguirre 0
LHP Hugo Castro (0.00, L) went four innings today and gave up both runs (unearned) on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against a couple of strikeouts. P Gerardo Esparza (0.00) went the next four and had three hits, a walk, and two Ks to show for it, then RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.00) gave up a hit and struck out two in the ninth. It’s not often that you send out three pitchers who have a 0.00 ERA by the end of the game and still lose it. The Aguirre batters only had two hits (but six walks) tonight, so I guess I’ll give props to PH Rayon Lampe (2B, .217) for coming through with a double and CF Edzul Robles (.238) for walking twice.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: RHP Jorge Campillo, at Portland, @ 7:05 pm PT
San Antonio: LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith, at Wichita, @ 5:00 pm PT
Inland Empire: RHP Mumba Rivera, at Lake Elsinore, @ 7:05 pm PT
Wisconsin: RHP Mark Lowe, at Appleton, @ 5:05 pm PT
Aguirre: TBA, at Aguirre, @ 8:00 am PT

  Another Draft-and-Follow Update

Baseball America has posted an update on the draft-and-follow signings for each team and it's looking like, in addition to Gibson and Schilling, the Mariners have signed 42nd round pick 3B Erwin Jacobo.

It's hard to find any info on this guy, and I've been trying for a while to find some stats on him, but to no avail. The roster for Palm Beach Community College, where he was attending school, indicates that he was used both as a third baseman and a right-handed pitcher. The 2004 MLB.com draft tracker describes him as being a bit of a late bloomer, having only played the game for a few years. He is described as having a strong, accurate arm, a body type similar to Bernie Williams, and a line drive stroke with some pull power.

More info on this guy if any other articles pop up.

  Game Recaps (6/2/05)

Tacoma 5, Sacramento 4 (OAK)
LHP Andrew Lorraine (5.86) went seven innings and gave up ten hits (HR) and a walk against two strikeouts, but somehow those only turned into three runs. LHP Jared Thomas (3.62, W) went the next inning and gave up a solo home run and a walk, then RHP Masao Kida (4.57, S) gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth. The Rainiers sent ten batters to the plate in the ninth to score their runs. Unfortunately, SS Yuniesky Betancourt (.000) recorded the first and last outs of the inning, but RF Chris Snelling (R, .399), C Ryan Chirstianson (2B, R, .327), and PH-CF Jamal Strong (2 RBI, .293) all had hits and 1B Scott Spiezio (R, .333), CF-LF Abraham Nunez (R, RBI, .251), C Miguel Olivo (R, .000), and 2B Ramon Santiago (CS, RBI, .239) all walked in the inning.

San Antonio 3, Tulsa 2 (COL)
LHP Thom Oldham (3.63, W) went five innings in this one and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits, a hit batter, and four walks against three strikeouts. LHP Chris Key (1.42) one-hit the Drillers through the next three inning and struck out one, and then RHP Renee Cortez (5.16, S) walked a batter and got the save in the ninth. 2B Ismael Castro (2 2B, .220) had a couple of doubles, and RF T.J. Bohn (2B, R, RBI, .294) and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, RBI, .253) had one double each.

Rancho Cucamonga 3 (ANA), Inland Empire 6
LHP Miguel Martinez (6.19) got through four and a third innings giving up only three runs, despite four hits, a hit batter, and five walks. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.16, W) was perfect through the next inning and two-thirds, only allowing one of Martinez’ runs to score, then RHP Aaron Looper (0.00) pitched two innings, hit a batter, and threw a wild pitch. RHP Greg Wear (2.57) walked one in the ninth. Each one of the Sixers pitchers also struck out two tonight. 2B Michael Garciaparra (R, SB, .340) was 1-2 with a couple walks, and CF Wladimir Balentien (2B, R, RBI, .289) had a double.

Wisconsin 6, Cedar Rapids 2 (ANA)
RHP Jason Snyder (3.55, W) was solid, going six innings and giving up just two runs on seven hits and a wild pitch with five Ks along the way. LHP Eric O’Flahery (5.55, S) finally got himself under control, and got through the final three walking two and striking out two. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (.331), RF Mike Wilson (2B, 2 R, RBI, .251), and DH Yung-Chi Chen (SB, .281) all had two hits, and 1B Marshall Hubbard (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .280) hit his sixth home run. LF Sebastien Boucher (2B, R, .316) also had a fine performance, going 1-2 with three walks.

Venoco #1 8 (HOU), Aguirre 2
RHP Alfredo Venagas (1.42, E, L) took the hill for four innings today, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks against four strikeouts. RHP Alejandro Gutierrez (5.00) got knocked around after that, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in two and a third innings, but LHP Jose Jimenez (10.12) let three of those and one of his own score while he was finishing up the inning, giving up three hits and a wild pitch, hitting a batter, and striking out one. P Karlin Taylor (0.00) went one inning after that and retired the batters in order. DH Humberto Espinoza (2B, R, RBI .464) had three hits in the game and 1B Gerardo Avila (.293) and DH Greysom Berroteran (.400) both had two.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: RHP Felix Hernandez, at Sacramento, @ 7:05 pm PT
San Antonio: LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith, at Wichita, @ 5:00 pm PT

  Fifth-Year Senior Signing

The Mariners signed Wake Forest catcher J.B. Tucker to a minor league contract as of Monday.

Tucker seems to be a pretty decent player, starting all of the Demon Deacons' games this season (58) and leading the team in a number of offensive categories. In addition, he was sixth in the ACC in homers, sixth in doubles, sixth in total bases, seventh in RBI, and tenth in slugging. It also says he threw out nineteen runners trying to steal, but there's not much context there. He transfered to Wake Forest a couple years back from Mississippi State.

Another article I dug up seems to go into a little more detail, describing him as hard-nosed and intelligent. There was also a bidding war for his services, in which Bob Fontaine was directly involved, and the bidding ended at $5,000 whereas most guys in his position might get a fifth of that. Rumors suggested he might have gone around the tenth round in this year's draft, but I'm not sure how much stock I put in that.

Tucker seems like an interesting enough player, and has some things working in his favor, but he's still going to be in a position where he'll be older than his competition just about everywhere the M's send him. Sometimes, fifth-year seniors pan out into something useful within the system, like Brandon Moorhead, but my expectations outside of that tend to be low.

My main thought with this signing is that it gives the M's four guys to split between Everett and Peoria and you could make a good case for all of them. Kent Dixon might be the most talented of the Australian position platyer signings last year. Danny Santin has some good hitting ability, and I'd like to see him behind the plate more before they decide he might have to move to first. Brian Schweiger has hit well, albeit a little streaky at times, and probably doesn't need a return tour of duty in Everett after having a .900+ OPS there last season. And now, to add to that mix, we have Tucker who has been told he's going to Everett. If I had to guess, I'd say Santin is Everett (nothing to do in Peoria), Dixon is in Peoria with the other Aussies, and Schweiger is... well, somewhere.

  Game Recaps (6/1/05)

Tacoma 4, Sacramento 5 (OAK)
RHP Cha Seung Baek (3.35) had a good start, going five innings and allowing a couple of runs to score on six hits and a walk with four Ks. RHP Jeff Harris (1.08) went the next two and a third, but he gave up a run on three walks. Well, actually, RHP Masao Kida (4.69, L) did, as he allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over the final inning to give Sacramento a walk-off win. Kida briefly regained my favor for about a month there, but now he’s back to bugging me again. CF Jamal Strong (2B, R, .288), LF Chris Snelling (2B, R, .396), and DH Ryan Christianson (RBI, .320) each had three hits, and 1B Aaron Rifkin (2 2B, R, RBI, .250) doubled twice. C Miguel Olivo (.000) was 0-4 with two strikeouts in his first game with the team.

San Antonio 4, Tulsa 2 (COL)
RHP Juan Sandoval (3.69, W) had one of his lucky outings, giving up just two unearned runs despite eight hits, a walk, a hit batter, a balk, and two strikeouts in five and one third innings of work. The next two and two-thirds went to LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.18), who gave up a hit, walked two, and struck out two. RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.53, S) kept his evil twin tied up in the hotel closet today and gave up just one hit in the ninth. The Missions had two hits each from the bats of RF T.J. Bohn (HR, .294), 1B Nate Espy (2B, R, E, .284), 3B Jesus Guzman (.274), and CF Gary Harris (3B, R, .261), and a home run from DH Jesse Hoorelbeke (HR, 3 RBI, .253). Still no Casey Craig.

Rancho Cucamonga 4, Inland Empire 7
RHP Brandon Moorhead (4.35) continued his string of good starts by getting through five and two-thirds innings allowing just a run on three hits while striking out seven. RHP Oliver Arias (9.00) let that run, as he gave up two hits and three walks without recording an out. Those turned into three runs, but RHP Mike Steele (2.60, W) allowed just a hit over the final three and a third and struck out four. RF B.J. Garbe (2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, .275) put on a show today, going 3-3 and getting plunked. CF Chris Colton (2 2B, R, .235) had two hits to add to the mix. SS Erick Monzon (.330) was 1-3 with a walk before being pulled for a pinch runner. Hamstring?

Wisconsin 3, Cedar rapids 4 (ANA) (ten innings)
LHP Julio Santiago (1.80, E), called up to compensate for Mumba Rivera going to California (probably replacing Martinez in the rotation), had a decent start in spite of bad defense around him, going five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Watch out for this guy; I thought he’d end up in Everett, but I guess not. RHP Cibney Bello (1.87) went the next inning and a third and gave up a run on a hit (HR) and a walk with one K. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.57) went the same span with a hit and a strikeout, but RHP Craig James (0.43, L) would lose it in extra innings despite striking out four, going an inning and two-thirds and giving up a run on three hits. The ball took a terrible hop on that one. 3B-2B Yung-Chi Chen (2 2B, HR, .278) had three hits in this one, LF Sebastien Boucher (R, .312) had two, and RF Mike Wilson (HR,

Cagua 1 (CIN), Aguirre 0
RHP Ronald Uviedo (1.42, L) took the loss in a hardcore pitching duel, giving up a run on two hits and a walk against six strikeouts in five and a third innings of work. P Edlando Seco (0.00) went the next two and two-thirds, giving up just one hit and punching out four, then RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.00) had a perfect ninth and struck out a batter. 1B Franklin Tua (.385) had the only hit for the team, and 3B Deybis Benitez (.128) walked twice. That’s really all I have to say about this one.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: LHP Andrew Lorraine, at Sacramento, @ 7:05 pm PT
San Antonio: LHP Thom Oldham, at Tulsa, @ 5:05 pm PT
Inland Empire: TBA, at San Bernadino, @ 5:11 pm PT
Wisconsin: RHP Jason Snyder, at Cedar Rapids, @ 10:00 am PT
Aguirre: TBA, at Venoco, @ 8:00 am PT

San Antonio Missions: 27-26, .509, 6 GB in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 25-27, .481, 4 GB in CAL South
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 30-23, .566, T-1st in MWL West

  Draft And Follow Update

In addition to 11th round pick Michael Saunders, it looks like the M's signed 30th round pick LHP Rollie Gibson and 40th round pick RHP Michael Schilling, who were teammates at Fresno City College.

Gibson was one of the guys who seemed kind of intriguing to me when I was looking up his player profile when the M's drafted him. He uses a fastball that sinks sometimes, a late-breaking curve, and a circle change, and he can use them all to induce Ks. The downside is that his walk rate is pretty ugly, 35 in 66 innings pitched, though he did lead the team with 70 Ks. Hitter's don't have much on him, but those walks are bad.

Schilling sounds like a guy who might've gone higher in the draft if not for the fact that he's been pitching at a community college and struggles to stay healthy, or so it seems. He didn't pitch much this year (15.2 IP), and he didn't pitch much last year either, but his Ks are decent and he doesn't walk that many batters. He has a FB, slider, and change, all of which he seems to throw heavy. His fastball has considerable potential, and he should be able to add some movement and maybe a little more velocity to it as he starts working with the M's coaches.

  Game Recaps (5/31/05)

Tacoma 8, Sacramento 3 (OAK)
LHP Damian Moss (2.70) somehow managed to wrangle in his walk numbers, down to two in six and two-thirds in this one, and plus seven hits, a wild pitch, and a hit batter, that turned into three runs (two earned) against five Ks. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (8.04) walked two and threw a wild pitch next, scoring one of Moss’ runners, but all four of his outs came via the strikeout. RHP Sean Green (0.00), making his triple-A debut, gave up a hit, a walk, and a strikeout. 2B Eric Blakeley (R, 2 RBI, .429) was really supposed to just be there in case of emergency, but the Morse call-up forced him into the starting lineup and he had three hits in this one. C Ryan Christianson (HR, 4 RBI, .304) and SS Ramon Santiago (2B, 2 R, .227) both had two hits.

San Antonio 2, Tulsa 7 (COL)
This one has the early lead in the running for the Heartbreaker of the Year Award. LHP Bobby Livingston (2.90, L) had a seven-inning PERFECT GAME, five strikeouts, and to open the eighth, there’s a single, two errors, and another single to score a run against him. Then he gets pulled for RHP Renee Cortez (5.40), who scores the other three (only one was earned) and proceeds to give up three runs of his own after two hits, a wild pitch, and two walks while recording only two outs (one of them a K), and by the time the dust settles and LHP Tim Rall (3.79) gets the final out, the Missions are facing a five-run deficit going into the top of the ninth. LF Jaime Bubela (2 SB, CS, .259), SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2B, 2 R, CS, .275), and DH Nate Espy (2 RBI, .276) each had two hits, and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, .217). Still, it’s been a few days since the Missiosn called up Casey Craig to take Nelson’s spot and he still hasn’t made an appearance aside from the PH in his first game

Rancho Cucamonga 2 (ANA), Inland Empire 3
LHP Ryan Feierabend (5.57, PO) has pitched horribly at times this year, but give credit where its due, he had a great start this time out and held the Quakes to two runs on four hits (HR), a hit batter, and three walks against four Ks in six innings today. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.46) went the next two and a third, allowing two hits and a wild pitch while punching out three batters, then LHP Nick Bourgeois (2.52, W) picked up the W, after a perfect inning and two-thirds where he struck out a couple. 2B Michael Garciaparra (HR, 2 RBI, .333), LF Carlos Arroyo (R, .373), and 1B Matt Hagen (R, .213) all had two hits. Also notable was 3B Matt Rogelstad (.322) going 0-2 with three walks, and a triple from SS Adam Jones (3B, .314), his fifth.

Wisconsin 11, Cedar Rapids 4 (ANA)
RHP Aaron Jensen (4.99, L) couldn’t get it done today, going four innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks against al one K. RHP Stephen Grasley (4.11) followed with three innings where he was touched for a run on a hit and two hit batters, and he struck out three along the way. RHP Ivan Blanco (0.00) had an unearned run score against him in the eighth on just one hit, but he did strike out one. On offense, the T-Rats had two hits from SS Matt Tuiasosopo (R, E, .314) and DH Brandon Green (R, RBI, .207), and had some extra-base knocks from C Rob Johnson (2B, 2 PB, 2 BB, .325) and LF Sebastien Boucher (2B, 2 R, .303)

Aguirre 7, Venoco #2 3 (BAL)
LHP Jose Escalona (1.38, W) went five and a third innings today, giving up a run on three hits and a walk against five strikeouts. P Kervin Montbrum (2.79) went next and pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing a couple of runs (just one earned) on five hits and a walk against six strikeouts, then RHP Jorge Acosta (5.06) finished it off with a walk and a strikeout in the ninth. 1B Gerardo Avila (HR, 2 R, .300) and RF Nicomedes Gomez (2B, R, RBI, .292) both had three hits in the game, and DH Rayon Lampe (2B, RBI, .214), SS Jetsy Extrano (2B, R, .194), and CF Manuel Pinto (R, RBI, 2 SB, .353) all had two. C Jose Hernandez (R, RBI, 4 PB, .250) went 1-2 with a walk before being pulled due to four passed balls.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: RHP Cha Seung Baek, at Sacramento, @ 11:35 am PT
San Antonio: RHP Juan Sandoval, at Tulsa, @ 5:05 pm PT
Inland Empire: RHP Brandon Moorhead, at San Bernadino, @ 11:00 am PT
Wisconsin: LHP Julio Santiago, at Cedar Rapids, @ 5:00 pm PT

  Game Recaps (5/30/05)

Tacoma 10, Fresno 6 (SF)
RHP Jorge Campillo (2.68, W) held the Grizzlies to four hits and two walks against a couple of strikeouts in five innings of work. RHP Chris Buglovsky (5.76) followed and gave up five runs on seven hits (HR) against two strikeouts in just three innings, and then LHP Jared Thomas (3.42) allowed a run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout to open the first. Though the game probably wasn’t in too much danger, RHP Masao Kida (4.35, S) was brought in to get the save and gave up a hit, but allowed none of his inherited runners to score during the final two outs. The best single hitting performance of the night was probably 3B Hunter Brown (2B, HR, 3 RBI, .244) going 2-for-4, but LF Shin-soo Choo (R, SB, .292) and RF Chris Snelling (2 RBI, .389) also logged two hits, and 1B Aaron Rifkin (3B, 2 R, .250) and DH Greg Jacobs (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI ,.191) had some-extra base hits. 2B Eric Blakeley (R, .000), getting his first start with the Rainiers, did not get a hit, but did walk three times.

San Antonio 7, Tulsa 8 (COL)
RHP Jon Huber (5.36) had another lackluster start, going four innings and giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, three walks, and three strikeouts. Two of the walks and one of the hits opened up the fifth, so really, it could have been worse. LHP Chris Key (2.70), up from Inland Empire, went the next three and a third and allowed one run on three hits (HR) with a strikeout, but RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.63) lost it in the ninth, giving up two solo home runs, a walk, a wild pitch, and a hit batter before recording the final out of the inning. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2 2B, R, SB, .269) and DH Nate Espy (2 2B, 3B, 2 R, .269) both had three hits in the game and RF T.J. Bohn (HR, 2 RBI, .296) homered, which would usually be enough to win a game, but not in this instance.

Rancho Cucamonga 4 (ANA), Inland Empire 12
RHP Aaron Trolia (4.38, W) actually had a pretty solid outing, going six innings and allowing just two runs on five hits with five Ks. RHP Aaron Looper (0.00) had an unearned run score against him after a walk and two strikeouts in the next two innings, and then RHP Brian Stitt (5.92) suffered a similar fate in the ninth with one hit and one strikeout. Lots of hits in this one, as 2B Michael Garciaparra (2 R, 2 RBI, SB, E, .318), SS Adam Jones (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .315), and DH Erick Monzon (2 2B, 2 R, RBI, .330) each had three, and 3B Matt Rogelstad (RBI, E, .325), 1B Bryan LaHair (2B, R, 2 RBI, .294), and CF Wladimir Balentien (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .298) had two apiece.

Wisconsin 11, Quad Cities 4 (STL)
RHP Mark Lowe (5.33, W) gave up four runs on eight hits (HR) and two walks against a strikeout in five innings, but that’s not the story here. Neither is LHP Kendall Bergdall (2.57) going the next three and allowing a hit, a wild pitch, and three walks against a lone strikeout (though that K/BB is terrifying) or RHP Cibney Bello (1.69) pitching a scoreless inning after a hit and a walk. No, what’s probably most interesting about this game is C Rob Johnson (2 HR, 4 R, 3 RBI, .324) and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (3 2B, R, 3 RBI, .309) both going 4-for –5 and collectively notching five extra-base hits. Though I will tell you that RF Mike Wilson (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .251), 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (.338), 3B Yung-Chi Chen (R, RBI, .269), and 1B Brandon Green (2 R, .199) also had two hits each.

San Joaquin 5 (PIT), Aguirre 3
P Karlin Taylor (4.70, E, L) gave up four runs on three hits, a hit batter, three walks, and a strikeout in three and two-thirds innings of work. RHP Kelvin Alarcon (2.57) pitched the next two and a third innings, allowing a run on two hits and four walks, and P Carlos Sanchez (1.17) pitched the same amount of innings, giving up three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. For some odd reason, RHP Alfredo Venagas (0.00) came in for two-thirds of an inning of relief after that and had only a walk of note. CF Edzul Robles (RBI, .273), C Jair Fernandez (.400), and PH/DH Greyson Berroteran (R, RBI, .375) each had two hits in the game, but the entire team was limited to singles throughout.

I figured since there were so many transactions recently, I might as well note them all here. First off, on the major league level we have Miguel Olivo headed down to Tacoma and Rene Rivera being called up to the bigs again, along with Michael Morse being called up with an unknown move corresponding there. At Tacoma, Sean Green was added to replace Oliver Arias (who, in turn, was the emergency call-up when Sherrill was DLed), and in Texas, Chris Key replaces Green and Luis Oliveros takes Rivera’s spot again. I haven’t heard anything else regarding who might be turning up in Inland or Wisconsin, but they seem to be in the process of shaking things up. Edit: One of the transactions that slipped underneath my radar was RHP Mumba Rivera going to the Cal League, and LHP Julio Santiago being promoted to Wisconsin. Watch out for Julio, he might be interesting.

  Game Recaps (5/29/05)

Tacoma 2, Fresno 5 (SF)
RHP Felix Hernandez (2.72) had an off-day control wise, going five innings and allowing a couple of runs on four hits and five walks against four strikeouts. RHP Jeff Harris (0.00) followed with two frames of work and gave up a hit and struck out a couple. RHP Masao Kida (4.42, L) ran into trouble for the first time in several outings, allowing three runs on three hits (HR) and a walk against a strikeout in just an inning and a third. Almost everyone had one hit tonight, but there wasn’t much the Rainiers got out of it, so I guess I’ll give a gold start to LF Shin-soo Choo (SB, .286) for going 1-2 with three walks and at least giving the team an opportunity to score.

Wichita 4 (KC), San Antonio 3
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.40, L) had some bad luck tonight, going five and a third innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on just four hits, a wild pitch, and three walks against three strikeouts, and LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.37), who had just two hits, a wild pitch, and a strikeout in his two and two-thirds innings gave up two of those. RHP Sean Green (2.96) had a perfect ninth and struck out a batter. This is another one where it’s hard to pull out a notable, so I’ll just go with 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (.247) having two hits and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, R, .214) getting a double and scoring on it.

High Desert 4 (KC), Inland Empire 5
Inland Empire : High Desert :: San Antonio : Corpus Christi. Well, not quite, but close to it. LHP Jason Mackintosh (2.91) gave up only four runs in six and a third innings today, despite thirteen hits against six Ks. LHP Nick Bourgeois (2.70) took it for another two and a third innings and allowed a hit, two walks, and a strikeout, then RHP Greg Wear (2.70) got the win for recording the final out. SS Adam Jones (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, .306) was the clear standout in this one, going 4-5 and doubling in RF Chris Colton (2 R, .223) to score the walk-off run.

Wisconsin 9, Quad Cities 7 (STL)
RHP Mumba Rivera (3.22, W) is still struggling with his control, and yet, is still winning. He went five innings tonight and gave up six runs on the same amount of hits (HR), a wild pitch, and four walks against just two Ks. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.67) followed and gave up a run on three hits (HR) with one strikeout. After that, RHP Craig James (0.00) went two and two-thirds innings, giving up a hit and a walk while he struck out four. It looks like he’s going to get through May too without giving up a run (knocks on wood), and while that’s not quite as impressive for a reliever, 19.1 scoreless innings is still pretty cool. The T-Rats got two hits apiece from RF Mike Wilson (2 R, .245), 3B Yung-Chi Chen (3B, 3 R, .266), C Omar Falcon (2B, RBI, .344), and LF Sebastien Boucher (2B, R, RBI, .309), and extra-base hits by 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (HR, .333) and DH Jack Arroyo (3B, R, 3 RBI, .229).

Tronconero #2 4 (NYM), Aguirre 1 (5/28/05)
Not exactly a good game for the Mariners. P Gerardo Esparza (0.00, L) went four and two-thirds innings and allowed three unearned runs after two hits, a wild pitch, three walks, and five strikeouts. RHP Ronald Uviedo (1.23) took it the rest of the way and allowed a run on three hits with three strikeouts. 1B Gerardo Avila (2B, RBI, .300) was 1-3 and one of only two players on the team with a hit in this one.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:
Tacoma: RHP Jorge Campillo, at Fresno, @ 6:05 pm PT
San Antonio: RHP Jon Huber, at Tulsa, @ 2:05 pm PT
Inland Empire: RHP Aaron Trolia, at San Bernadino, @ 5:30 pm PT
Wisconsin: RHP Mark Lowe, at Quad Cities, @ 12:00 pm PT
Aguirre: TBA, at Aguirre, @ 8:00 am PT

Tacoma Rainiers: 24-25, .490, 3.5 GB in PCL Pacific North
San Antonio Missions: 26-24, .520, 6 GB in TL West
Inland Empire 66ers: 22-27, .449, 5 GB in CAL South
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 29-21, .580, 1st in MWL West
Aguirre Mariners, 7-3, .700, 0.5 GB in VSL Valencia
Organizational Record: 108-100, .519
