Mariner Minors
Game Recaps (7/23/05)
Tacoma 7, Colorado Springs 10 (COL – 9)LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.61, L) had a small strikezone to deal with and ended up allowing eight runs on ten hits( HR) and three walks against three punchouts over six innings. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.30) went the next inning and gave up a couple more runs on two hits (HR), a walk, and a strikeout. LHP George Sherrill (2.08) returned to action with the Rainiers and gave up a pair of hits (one of which fell between three fielders) and struck out three. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (R, RBI, .298) had three hits in the game and 2B Ramon Santiago (2B, R, RBI, .247) and RF Abraham Nunez (HR, 3 RBI, .261) had two apiece.
San Antonio 3, Frisco 2 (TEX – 11)LHP Thom Oldham (3.38, PO, W) appears to be figuring the league out, going seven innings this time around and giving up a couple runs on eight hits while he struck out six strikeouts. LHP Cesar Jimenez (3.06), back from Tacoma now that Sherrill’s healthy, went the next two-thirds of an inning and gave up a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out a batter. Everyone probably knows my opinion on the matter, so I’ll refrain from repeating myself again. RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.70, S) went the final inning and a third, giving up a hit and striking out three. SS Adam Jones (2B, R, RBI, .314) and LF Jon Nelson (2B, RBI, .221) both had doubles, and DH Nate Espy (R, .271) had a hit and a couple of walks, but there were only four hits for the whole offense.
Inland Empire 3, Rancho Cucamonga 5 (ANA + 3)RHP Mumba Rivera (7.84, L) got tagged with another loss, giving up four runs on four hits (HR) and six walks against four Ks in five and one-third innings. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.48) gave up one of those and one more of his own in the next inning and two-thirds on three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and a K. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.82, PO) had a hit and a hit batter in his inning. RF B.J. Garbe (CS, PO, E, .275) had three hits, but three mistakes in the other aspects of his game. 2B Michael Garciaparra (.253) had a couple hits, and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, .302) and DH Wladimir Balentien (HR, 2 RBI, .267) added extra-base hits.
Clinton 8 (TEX - 3), Wisconsin 6 (eleven innings)The T-Rats were three runs ahead coming into the ninth and ended up losing by two in eleven innings. RHP Ivan Blanco (7.08) had one of his better outings, going six innings and allowing four hits and three walks against seven strikeouts. RHP Cibney Bello (4.82) struggled in the next two and two-thirds, giving up three runs on five hits, a wild pitch, and a walk with three Ks. RHP Justin Jordan (9.00) took the next two innings and gave up a run on three hits while punching out a couple, and LHP Donny Langdon (6.55) got the final out on a K, for Wisconsin, though before that, he had two hits, a wild pitch, and two walks, scoring one of his runs and one of Jordan’s. CF Jack Arroyo (2B, R, RBI, SB, CS, .242), C Omar Falcon (2B, 2 R, RBI, .281), and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (RBI, CS, .272) had two hits apiece, and DH Marshall Hubbard (2B, 2 R, .290) and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, .282) had doubles.
Everett 2, Salem-Keizer 6 (SF + 4)LHP Paul Fagan (4.78) gave up all six of the Volcanoes’ runs on eight hits (HR) and three walks against a strikeout through five innings of work. LHP Rollie Gibson (2.77, PO) went the last three, allowing runners to reach via a hit, a walk, and a hit batter, while striking out three. 3B Ron Prettyman (2B, R, RBI, .328) and SS Robert Hudson (SB, .255) had two hits each. 1B Jeff Flaig (2B, .330) had another double.
Peoria Mariners 4, Scottsdale Giants 8 (+ 8)RHP Kevin Olore (6.75, L) got the loss, going only an inning and allowing three runs on three hits and two walks against two Ks. RHP Miguel Marquez (7.83) took the next four innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits, two wild pitches, a hit batter, and a walk against a K. LHP Worth Lumry (6.92) got into trouble again in the next inning, giving up a couple of runs on two hits and two walks, but LHP Jose Suriel (6.00) evaded danger, despite a couple of walks in his inning. Suriel also notched a strikeout, but his K/BB is 0.4, which is just ugly. RHP Tyrone Lamont (5.00), on the other hand, added two more strikeouts, and bumped his K/BB up to 4.5 and is striking out a batter per inning. His control’s been much better this year than last, but it’s just not reflecting in his ERA yet. DH Curtis Ledbetter (3B, 2 R, .328) led the team with three hits, C Kevin Gergel (R, RBI, CS, .293) and 3B Leury Bonilla (RBI, .242) had two hits apiece, and LF Greg Halman (2B, .250) had a double.
As for the VSL, well, it appears that their game was rained out. That could mean another week of playing on Sunday, but for now I’m going to assume that won’t be the case. Also, I’d like to add that last night’s second game of the doubleheader wasn’t cancelled or rained out or anything, but there was no box score because it went to nine innings (despite being intended as seven) with no runs scoring between the two teams. LHP Kervin Montbrum (1.82) went the first five, and RHP Jorge Acosta (3.44) went the last four, but that’s about the extent of what I know.

Game Recaps (7/21 and 7/22/05)
Double recaps again.
Tucson 2 (ARI + 1), Tacoma 3LHP Bobby Livingston (3.60, W) went five innings, giving up a run on three hits (HR) and a walk against six strikeouts. RHP Felix Hernandez (2.45) went the next three and gave up an unearned run on two hits and a walk against four strikeouts. RHP Masao Kida (3.61, S) went the final inning, giving up two hits and striking out a batter. 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, R, .252) had two hits, and CF Jamal Strong (3B, RBI, .307) and DH Greg Dobbs (2B, RBI, .330) had extra-base knocks.
Tacoma 1, Colorado Springs 2 (COL )RHP Jeff Harris (3.21, L) went six innings and gave up a couple runs on six hits while striking out three. RHP Clint Nageotte (0.63) pitched the final two, giving up a walk and striking out three as well. 1B Greg Dobbs (.337) and LF Shin-soo Choo (2 2B, RBI, .263) both had two hits.
San Antonio 2, Frisco 3 (TEX – 11) (thirteen innings)RHP Jon Huber (4.95) had a decent outing, going seven innings and allowing two runs on eight hits, a hit batter, and two walks against six strikeouts. LHP Tim Rall (2.56) and RHP R.D. Spiehs (3.38) split the next two innings, with Rall giving up a hit and a walk while striking out a batter and Spiehs doing the same, plus a strikeout. LHP Chris Key (1.47) went the final three and one-third innings and gave up the winning run after four hits, two walks, and a strikeout.
San Antonio 1, Frisco 4 (TEX – 10)Whenever you see a high hit total by the team opposing the Missions, it’s generally safe to assume that RHP Juan Sandoval (3.77, PO, L) started. Of the twelve hits by the Roughriders, Sandoval gave up eleven of them in five innings of work, and that translated into four runs. Sandoval also struck out a couple of batters. RHP Michael Bumstead (0.00) walked two in the next inning, and RHP Scott Atchison (0.00) had a hit, a walk, and two strikeouts in the final two. 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, RBI, .261), DH Jon Nelson (2B, CS, .221), and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, .247) all had doubles.
Rancho Cucamonga 1 (ANA + 3), Inland Empire 0Probably the best pitching duel we’ve seen in a while, though the Sixers had the misfortune to cross paths with Jared Weaver on a good day. Nevertheless, RHP Chad Fillinger (8.49) was absolutely dominant through seven innings, giving up just two hits and
striking out nine. LHP Troy Cate (1.77, L) would give up the only run of the game over the next two innings, however, on two hits against three Ks. Unfortunately for the offense, Weaver kept pace with Fillinger for most of the game (give or take a few walks) and DH Wladimir Balentien (2B, .266) was the only one with a significant contribution to the offense.
Inland Empire 8, Rancho Cucamonga 1 (ANA + 2)LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.01) went seven innings and gave up a run on three hits (HR), a wild pitch, and three walks against eight Ks. RHP Oliver Arias (5.19) went the next inning, striking out a batter, and RHP Craig James (1.5) had two hits and a wild pitch, but no runs in the ninth inning. CF Sebastien Boucher (2B, HR, 3 R, A, .290), LF Carlos Arroyo (R, 2 RBI, .338), and C Luis Oliveros (3B, R, 2 RBI, .227) had two hits apiece, and DH Wladimir Balentien (2B, R, RBI, .267) and 2B Michael Garciaparra (2B, R, RBI, .247) had doubles. Balentien walked once as well, and as of this moment, he’s striking out once every 3.5 plate appearances (almost exactly). His career average has been once every 3.8, so we’ll see where things go from here.
Clinton 2 (TEX – 3), Wisconsin 8RHP Aaron Jensen (5.12, W) had a solid start, going six+ innings and giving up a run on four hits and three walks against four Ks. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (4.56), LHP Donny Langdon (5.91), and LHP Adam Brandt (18.00) split the last three innings, with O’Flaherty giving up a hit, Langdon giving up a hit, a walk, and two strikeouts, and Brandt giving up a run on two hits (HR) and a walk. O’Flaherty allowed Jensen’s lone run to score after Jensen opened up the seventh by giving up a hit. 2B Yung-Chi Chen (2B, R, RBI, .285) and RF Mike Wilson (2B, 2 RBI, .266) both had two hits, and 3B Brandon Green (2B, 2 R, RBI, .226) and 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, R, .293) had a double each.
Clinton 6 (TEX – 4), Wisconsin 7 (ten innings)LHP Julio Santiago (5.33) went seven innings and gave up three runs on eight hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks against four strikeouts. After that, the bullpen and the defense took a couple of hits. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.33) took the first few punches, giving up a run on three hits and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00) walked three in the next two-thirds (both outs were Ks) and two of those scored as unearned runs after LHP Eric O’Flaherty (4.42) came in. Like Lockwood before him, all of O’Flaherty’s outs came via the K. 3B Yung-Chi Chen (R, 2 RBI, .289) and C Rob Johnson (SB, .281) had three hits apiece, and LF Brent Johnson (R, 2 RBI, SB, .273), and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .269) had two each. 1B Brandon Green (2B, RBI, .226) added a double.
Everett 0, Salem-Keizer 4 (SF + 2)RHP Eric Carter (6.45, L), still struggling to follow up on his killer season debut, went four innings and gave up three runs on eight hits (2 HR!), three wild pitches, and three walks against just one strikeout. RHP Edgar Guaramato (5.52) took the next two, giving up a walk, hitting two batters, and striking out one, and LHP Lance Beus (4.15) gave up a run on two hits (HR) in the next two. I’m at a loss as far as a notable for the offense goes, seeing as there were only six hits for the Aquasox, none of them going for extra-bases, none by the same hitter twice, and none of them accompanied by a walk (or a run, or a RBI, for that matter)… so I guess I’ll have to go with 3B Ron Prettyman (SB, .321) as he singled and… stole a base… yeah, it wasn’t a good night.
Everett 8, Salem-Keizer 9 (SF + 3)LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (4.71) only went three and one-third innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits, a hit batter, and three strikeouts. RHP Jeff Gilmore (0.93) gave up one of those runs over the next inning and two-thirds, on a hit, a wild pitch, a walk, and two Ks. LHP David Asher (5.59, L) would get the loss as he gave up four runs on six hits, a hit batter, and a walk in an inning and two-thirds. RHP Roman Martinez (1.42) got the final out of that inning, and RHP Cory Koliscak (4.63) pitched the next inning without note. CF Trevor Heid (2B, 3 R, .333) had three hits in this one. I made light of his signing last year because his father’s the M’s Pac Rim scouting director, but he’s actually a talented athlete and seems to be learning how to use that to his advantage. 1B Jeff Flaig (HR, 2 RBI, .333) had two hits in the game, and 3B Ron Prettyman (HR, .316) and RF Michael Saunders (HR, 2 RBI, .243), like Flaig, also had homers. SS Reed Eastley (R, SB, E, .345) went 1-for-3 with a couple of walks.
Peoria Mariners 8, Mesa Cubs 9 (- 7)RHP Jorge Campillo (5.73) dominated the less experience competition, with three hits allowed and eight strikeouts in five innings of work. RHP Rich Dorman (18.00) made an appearance next, going an inning and giving up a run on two hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against two Ks. RHP Marwin Vega (13.50, L) ran into trouble again, partially due to the defense, and would give up seven runs (five earned) over the next two and one-third innings on seven hits, a hit batter, and two walks against a K, though LHP Estelin Soto (4.76) would score two of those while recording only one out. The offense, for the most part, held up its end of the bargain, and SS Dean Zorn (2B, R, 2 RBI, 2 CS, 2 E, .268) had three hits while 2B Jeff Dominguez (2 R, 2 SB, CS, .309), 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, R, 2 RBI, .342), DH Nick Prosise (2 2B, RBI, .315), and CF Donato Ruiz (R, .231) had two each.
The VSL is now part of the MILB.com database, which has made my life that much easier as far as the recaps go. They also have a better roster put together, so I’ve found out that Jetsy Extrano, possessor of everyone’s favorite baseball name, is the youngest player on the team and won’t turn sixteen ‘til next month, AND, he’s also a switch hitter. Also, the (arguably) top pitcher on the team (and second youngest player), Edlando Seco, is a left-hander, which makes that 0.00 ERA and nine hits allowed in 21.2 innings that much more interesting (even if he has fifteen walks to twenty-seven Ks).
Aguirre 8, San Joaquin 5 (PIT - 6)RHP Ronald Uviedo (2.68) went seven innings in this one and gave up two runs on five hits, two wild pitches, and a walk against seven strikeouts. RHP Carlos Sanchez (3.65) gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks against a strikeout, and RHP Kelvin Alarcon (1.69, S) got the final out and the save. 3B Deybis Benitez (HR, 3 RBI, SB, .211) and CF Manuel Pinto (R, .291, PO, .291) had two hits apiece, and C Franklin Tua (2B, R, .250) had a double.
Aguirre 3, Cagua 2 (CIN – 11) (seven innings)This was supposed to be a doubleheader, but thus far, only one box has been posted. RHP Gerardo Esparza (2.40) went two+ innings and gave up a run on two hits, two hit batters, three wild pitches, and three walks. RHP Kelvin Alarcon (1.47, W) pitched the next four innings and allowed three hits and a walk while striking out four. RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.71, S) would give up his second run of the year on a hit, a hit batter, two walks, and two Ks in the ninth. 3B Deybis Benitez (RBI, SB, .223) had two hits, and SS Terry Serrano (3B, R, 2 RBI, .208) had a triple.

Game Recaps (7/20/05)
Tucson 3 (ARI + 2), Tacoma 4RHP Cha Seung Baek (5.53) actually did all right through the first six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks against three strikeouts. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (5.05) followed him, and gave up a run on tow hits and two walks against four strikeouts in two and one-third innings of work, before RHP Masao Kida (3.67, S) got the final two outs. SS Yuniesky Betancourt (R, RBI, .296) had a couple of hits (AND A WALK), and RF Abraham Nunez (2 R, .259) was 1-for-2 with a couple of walks. Also 2B Ramon Santiago (CS, 3 RBI, .247) drove in three of the four runs for the Rainiers. How about that?
San Antonio 7, Frisco 4 (TEX – 12)A return to sanity, with the added bonus of beating one of the Rangers’ top pitching prospects in Edison Volquez. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.62, PO) went five innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a wild pitch against two strikeouts. RHP Renee Cortez (4.18) went the next two+ innings and gave up two runs (one earned again) on two hits and a walk with three Ks. LHP Tim Rall (2.63) pitched two-thirds, striking out a batter, and after that, RHP Emliano Fruto (2.76) went the rest of the way without incident. CF Jaime Bubela (2B, HR, 3 R, .296) had four hits in the game, and RF Gary Harris (2B, RBI, SB, .292) added three. The trio of 3B Jesus Guzman (R, .276), DH T.J. Bohn (2 HR, 4 RBI, .312), C Brian Moon (RBI, .264) had two apiece.
Lake Elsinore 8 (SD + 2), Inland Empire 4RHP Brandon Moorhead (5.02) went four innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks against four Ks. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (4.90, L) took the next two and two-thirds, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits and two hit batters with two strikeouts, but LHP Derrick Ellison (8.64) scored two of those and one of his own after three hits, a hit batter, and three walks in an inning and two-thirds. RHP Jeff Mault (6.75) had a hit, a walk, and a strikeout to score Ellison’s run in the final two-thirds. 3B Matt Rogelstad (2B, R, RBI, E, .307) and LF Carlos Arroyo (R, RBI, A, .338) both had two hits, and DH Wladimir Balentien (HR, 2 RBI, .265) had his fifteenth home run. CF Michael Nesbit (2B, R, .285) had a double, and 1B Bryan Lahair (.287) walked twice.
I messed up, Wisconsin was off.
Spokane 8 (CHC – 5), Everett 1LHP Justin Thomas (4.40, L) had his first bad start, going four innings and giving up six runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Roman Martinez (1.50) went the next four innings and allowed four hits, a walk, and two Ks, but no runs. LHP David Asher (2.25), however, would give up two of them on three hits and a strikeout in the ninth. From the hitting end of things, 1B Reed Eastley (2B, R, .354) had a couple of base knocks and RF Alex Gary (3B, .232) tripled, but most noteworthy was probably 2B Luis Valbuena (SB, CS, .264) walking three times, even if he wasn’t able to make much out of it. Kid’s going to be solid, just wait.
Mesa Angels 3 (+ 3), Peoria Mariners 4 (ten innings)Patchwork pitching again, but they were mostly good performances and they did come out on top. RHP Kevin Olore (0.00) struck out three in the first two innings and was followed by RHP Chia-an Huang (5.87), who had four hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and a strikeout in three innings of work. RHP Ari Kafka (18.00) made his pro debut next and showed some rust (understandable), giving up two runs on three hits against two strikeouts in the sixth. RHP Toma Bonilla (6.35) and RHP Juan Zapata (5.21) split the next two innings, with Bonilla walking two balking, and Zapata giving up a hit and a free pass. RHP John Sullivan (4.85, W) got the win in extra innings, pitching two frames and giving up a run on a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk against two Ks. CF Tim Auty (2B, R 2 RBI, .378) had two hits and a walk, which is no real surprise. 1B Andy Hargrove (2B, R, .333) doubled and walked twice, one of those times to load the bases in the tenth and push SS Dean Zorn (R, CS, .222) to third. Zorn, who had walked three times in the game, would score on a sac fly by C Kevin Gergel (RBI, .278).
Tronconero #2 1 (NYM + 4), Aguirre 2RHP Alfredo Venagas (2.25, 2 E, W) had another killer start, going six and one-third innings and allowing just an unearned run on four hits and two hit batters against three strikeouts. LHP Jose Jimenez (3.74) gave up a couple hits and a hit batter over the next two-thirds+, and after that RHP Jorge Acosta (3.86) and RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.37, S) split the last two innings, with Acosta striking out a batter and Gaetano giving up a hit. 1B Franklin Tua (2B, RBI, .253) and LF William Ortiz (HR< .232) had the extra-base hits to put Aguirre over the top in this one.

Game Recaps (7/19/05)
Tucson 9 (ARI + 3), Tacoma 5LHP Damian Moss (4.55, PO, L) went four and two-thirds innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits, a hit batter, and two walks against two Ks. RHP Chris Buglovsky (4.95), coming off the DL, went the next inning and two-thirds and gave up two more runs on two hits (HR) and a walk with one strikeout. Finally, LHP Cesar Jimenez (9.39) went the last two and two-thirds and gave up a couple of runs on two hits (2 HR!) and a walk against three strikeouts. It’s an improvement, and I probably like Jimenez more than the next guy, but he seemed to be better off in Texas. RF Abraham Nunez (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, A, .258) had two hits, and C Ryan Christianson (2B, R, CS, .265) had a double and a walk, but there wasn’t much action considering eight of the nine starters had a hit.
San Antonio 1, Frisco 2 (TEX - 11)The repeat of the LHP Jared Thomas (3.86) For Starter Experiment didn’t do too well in its first test run, as he gave up both of the Roughriders’ runs on four hits (HR) and three walks against five strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings. RHP Michael Bumstead (0.00), down from Tacoma with the release of Phil Wilson, went the next inning and a third and had two hits, two wild pitches, two walks and a strikeout, but no runs. LHP Chris Key (1.32) gave up two hits in the next two innings, and RHP Scott Atchison (0.00) struck out one in the eighth. RF T.J. Bohn (HR, .311) had the only big hit for the Missions, a solo home run in the fourth off Thomas Diamond, but aside from two hits from LF Jon Nelson (CS, PO, .225), that was about it.
Lake Elsinore 5 (SD + 1), Inland Empire 3LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.03, PO) had another solid start, but unfortunately, this one went to waste. Feir went eight innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits (HR) and a hit batter against a lone strikeout. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.46, L) would get the loss after giving up a couple of runs on two hits (HR) against two Ks in the ninth. CF Michael Nesbit (R, .287) had three hits in the game, but there was nothing else worth noting.
Wisconsin 4, Kane County 17 (OAK + 4)RHP Randy Frye (8.10) only went an inning and two-thirds, giving up nine runs on four hits (HR), a hit batter, and four walks against two strikeouts. In other words, ever batter that reached, scored. A large part of that one could credit to RHP Cibney Bello (4.56), who went three and a third innings, scoring all three of his inherited runners and two runs of his own on six hits, a wild pitch, and a walk against three strikeouts. RHP Justin Jordan (10.12) also got tagged, giving up six runs on nine hits against four strikeouts in an inning and two-thirds, but RHP Stephen Grasley (3.23) only scored one of those and gave up a hit and struck out two while carrying it the rest of the way. LF Brent Johnson (2B, R, RBI, .271) had three more hits and is finally averaging out to some rather nice numbers. CF Chris Colton (2B, HR, 2 R, .339) added two hits, and PH-2B Jack Arroyo (2B, .234) had a double to show for two at-bats.
Spokane 10 (CHC – 6), Everett 2RHP Nick Allen (2.92) got through six innings and gave up just two runs (one earned) on four hits, a hit batter, and two walks against four strikeouts, and that’s the good news. The bad news is that the bullpen collapsed, starting with RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.39, L), who gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and a strikeout in an inning+ of work, and continuing when RHP Cory Koliscak (5.06, E), who came into the game with an ERA below one, gave up two of Guaramato’s runs and five of his own on five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in the next inning and a third. RHP Joe Woerman (5.14) was stuck cleaning up the final two-thirds of an inning, and allowed one of Koliscak’s runs to score, but without a hit or a walk. 3B Reed Eastley (R, E, .333) had a couple of hits, RF-CF Trevor Heid (2B, RBI, .298) had a double, and RF Alex Gary (.231) had a hit in his only at-bat.
Peoria Mariners 3, Phoenix Athletics 5 (+ 1)LHP George Sherrill (0.00) got two more innings of rehab work in and two more strikeouts to his credit. LHP Harold Williams (2.48, PO, L) went the next five and gave up five runs (two earned) on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and three walks against three strikeouts. The final inning went to RHP Juan Colon (6.00), who gave up a hit and struck out two. The offense was pretty weak, so I’ll note that C Curtis Ledbetter (.327) and C Nick Prosise (.306) each had a hit in two at-bats while splitting the catching duties, and RF Jose Graterol (R, .442) had a hit and a walk.
Aguirre 6, Universidad 4 (FLA-WAS – 20)RHP Carlos Figueroa (22.50) went two and one-third innings, giving up a couple of runs on three hits, three wild pitches, and four walks against two Ks. RHP Alejandro Gutierrez (2.50, W) pitched the next three and one-third innings, allowing one hit and three walks against two Ks. LHP Jose Jimenez (3.86) pitched an inning and a third after that, with a hit and a strikeout to his line, and RHP Karlin Taylor (4.03) and LHP Hugo Castro (4.26) split the last two, with Taylor giving up a couple of runs on two hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and a strikeout, and Castro getting through it on three fly outs. SS Terry Serrano (2 2B, 2 R, SB, .226) and 2B Humberto Espinoza (R, RBI, .307) had two hits each hitting from the first two spots, and 1B Gerardo Avila (2B, SB, RBI, .255) and DH Jetsy Extrano (2B, R, .138) added doubles. LF William Ortiz (2 R, SB, .225) had a couple of walks.

Game Recaps (7/19/05)
Tucson 4 (ARI + 2), Tacoma 2LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.19) continued his string of good starts, going six innings and giving up a run on five hits, a hit batter, and three walks against four Ks. RHP Clint Nageotte (0.73) got into a little trouble over the next two, giving up an unearned run on three hits against a couple of Ks, and RHP Sean Green (3.86, L) ended up blowing it in the ninth after two runs on a hit and three walks against three Ks. 1B Greg Dobbs (2B, R, .338) put that pretty swing to use and got three hits, and 3B Justin Leone (RBI, .280) had two, plus a walk. CF Jamal Strong (3B, .312) added a triple.
Lake Elsinore 3 (SD 0), Inland Empire 4RHP Mumba Rivera (7.96) had another good start (as in, it shows that he’s adjusting), and went five and one-third innings giving up three runs on five hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks against five strikeouts, but those home runs are still a concern (13 in 46.1 IP!). LHP Troy Cate (1.47) went the next two and two-thirds and had a hit, a hit batter, and three strikeouts to his credit, and after that, RHP Craig James (1.80) struck out a batter in the ninth. 1B Bryan Lahair (R, RBI, .288) had two hits and CF Michael Nesbit (2B, R, .277), in his only at-bat, and LF Carlos Arroyo (3B, R, 2 RBI, .341) had extra-base hits.
There's an article up on
Bryan Lahair at MILB.com right now that's worth checking out.
Wisconsin 9, Kane County 8 (OAK + 3)The T-Rats just barely pulled this one out after a four-run rally at the end of the ninth inning. But first, RHP Mark Lowe (4.96, E), to start things out, gave up four runs on five hits (HR) and three walks against six strikeouts in five innings of work. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (4.65) went the next three innings, only allowing two hit and a walk while he struck out two, but LHP Adam Brandt (27.00) got in trouble to open the ninth, giving up two hits and a walk without recording an out. RHP Jon Lockwood (0.00) let all three and one unearned of his own score after two more hits, but he came back to strike out the side. LF Brent Johnson (2B, R, RBI, SB, .263), RF Mike Wilson (2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .266), and CF Chris Colton (R, 2 RBI, .327) each had two hits, and 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, 2 R, .300) had a double and a walk. Hubbard is 23 and putting up a .900+ OPS in a league that, for the most part, favors pitchers, so what more does he have to do to get promoted?
Spokane 2 (CHC - 7), Everett 12LHP Paul Fagan (3.67, PO, W) had a great start, going six innings and giving up a run on five hits and two walks while punching out eight. RHP Edgar Guaramato (6.17, PO) walked two and threw a wild pitch in the next inning, RHP Joe Woerman (5.68) had a hit, two walks, and two strikeouts in the eighth, and LHP Rollie Gibson (3.60) allowed a run on two hits and a hit batter against a pair of Ks in the ninth. LF Casey Craig (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .363) and CF Trevor Heid (2 2B, R, 2 RBI, SB, .295) both had three hits, and Craig keeps on hitting like this and it doesn’t get him a ticket to Inland to START next year, I don’t know what will. 1B Jeff Flaig (HR, .333) and DH Danny Santin (2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, .342) had two hits apiece as the three-four hitters, again. 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, 2 R, .267) and SS Robert Hudson (2B, R, RBI, E, .227) each had a double.
Peoria Mariners 2, Phoenix Brewers 12 (- 7)The opposite of the Everett game. RHP Jorge Campillo (10.50, L) got three innings of rehab work in, but gave up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk. RHP Miguel Marquez (8.53) went the next four innings and gave up a couple of runs on six hits against four strikeouts, which is a definite improvement. LHP Jose Suriel (6.43) pitched the final inning and gave up a couple of runs on three hits and two walks. LF Greg Halman (3B, R, .275) had two hits and a walk and 3B Jeff Dominguez (RBI, .312) had one hit and a walk, but the offense down there was unusually quiet today.
As you may have gathered, the VSL ordinarily has Sundays off no matter what, but the loss of the doubleheader forced them to play. Unfortunately, there aren’t any box scores to speak of from those two games, or they haven’t worked the bugs out yet. Either way, both were losses, to LHPs Jose Escalona and Hugo Castro, respectively.
Ciudad Alianza 1 (BOS-SD), Aguirre 2 (ten innings)Stellar pitching from the Aguirre staff earlier today. P Edlando Seco (0.00) got a rare start, only his second, actually, and gave up an unearned run on a hit, a hit batter, and four walks against seven strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings. RHP Carlos Sanchez (3.13) went the next three and two-thirds innings, giving up just a hit and striking out three, and RHP Diomny Gaetano (0.39) took it to extra innings, pitching an inning and two-thirds without allowing a baserunner and striking out two. The team had an odd way of scoring their game-winning run… at least not exactly conventional. SS Terry Serrano (R, SB, E, .213) bunted to third to get on base initially, then stole second, moved to third and scored when 2B Humberto Espinoza (.301) grounded into a fielder’s choice the should’ve been a DP, had the second baseman not thrown it away. But, you know, whatever works.

Game Recaps (7/17/05)
Portland 3 (SD – 2), Tacoma 7A pretty interesting game considering there was no scoring until the eighth inning. RHP Jeff Harris (3.24) did his thing for six innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out five. RHP Felix Hernandez (2.55) went an inning+ after that and gave up three runs on three hits, a hit batter, and two walks against a strikeout, though RHP Masao Kida (3.71, W), who pitched the next two innings giving up a hit and striking out two, gave up one of the runs charged to Felix. CF Jamal Strong (R, RBI, SB, E, .312) and SS Yuniesky Betancourt (2B, R, 2 RBI, .297) had two hits each. DH Greg Dobbs (2B, R, 3 RBI, .315) and 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, RBI, .251) added doubles to the mix.
Springfield 2 (STL – 1), San Antonio 6 LHP Thom Oldham (3.44) went seven strong innings and gave up two runs on seven hits (2 HR!) while striking out eight. RHP Scott Atchison (0.00) struck out one in the next inning, and RHP Emliano Fruto (2.82) had a hit and a strikeout in the ninth. CF Gary Harris (3 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, SB, .289) had four hits in the game, SS Adam Jones (2 RBI, .341) had two, and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (2B, R, .263), DH Nate Espy (2B, R, .278), and C Rene Rivera (2B, RBI, PB, .285) contributed some doubles.
Inland Empire 4, Modesto 7 (COL + 11)Well, at least this series is over. LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.16, L) went six innings and gave up six runs on ten hits (HR), two wild pitches, and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Jeff Mault (9.00) gave up two hits in the seventh, and RHP Craig James (2.25) gave up an unearned run on two hits and a wild pitch in the eighth. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (SB, .341), LF Carlos Arroyo (2B, R, RBI, .342), and C (yes C) Matt Hagen (3B, 2 PB, .198) had two hits apiece, and 1B Bryan Lahair (2B, R, .286), 3B Erick Monzon (HR, .259), and RF B.J. Garbe (HR, 2 RBI, .267) flashed some power.
Wisconsin 6, Kane County 12 (OAK + 4)This is one where I was glad I was listening to the game, because the line doesn’t really tell the whole story. RHP Ivan Blanco (7.53, L) looks like he got hammered, with ten runs (seven earned) in two and a third innings on six hits (2 HR!), two wild pitches, a hit batter, and three walks, but defense clearly came into play here, one of the home runs (a two-run shot) was disputed, and LHP Donny Langdon (6.52) gave up two of those runs on a hit and struck out three over the next three and two-thirds innings. This kind of thing has been happening a lot lately in Blanco’s outings, but he isn’t exactly coming back and battling very well. RHP Cibney Bello (4.50) pitched the next inning, striking out a batter, and RHP Justin Jordan (4.26) gave up two runs on five hits against a strikeout in the eighth. RF Mike Wilson (R, .263) and DH Marshall Hubbard (2B, R, .299) both had two hits, and 1B Luis Soto (2B, R, 2 RBI, .194) and C Omar Falcon (HR, 2 RBI, .275) had some extra-base knocks.
Spokane 5 (CHC – 6), Everett 13LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (3.57) got through four innings and gave up three runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks against three strikeouts. LHP Lance Beus (4.09, PO, W) followed him for two innings and would pick up the win, giving up a run on three hits and striking out one in that span, and RHP Roman Martinez (4.50), demoted from Wisconsin in exchange for Adam Brandt (?), had similar results minus a hit. RHP Cory Koliscak (0.96) walked one and struck out one in the ninth. The three and four hitters for the Aquasox, 1B Jeff Flaig (2 2B, 4 R, RBI, .325) and DH Danny Santin (2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, .333), had four hits apiece. CF Casey Craig (2B, R, A, .349), 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .268), C J.B. Tucker (2B, HR, 5 RBI, .266), and LF Bryan Sabatella (2B, HR, 2 RBI, .293) logged two hits each.
Surprise Royals 2 (+ 9), Peoria Mariners 8LHP George Sherrill (0.00), RHP Kevin Olore, (0.00), and RHP Marwin Vega (0.00) split the first three innings, with Sherrill striking out two, Olore having a hit and a K, and Vega punching out one. LHP Worth Lumry (6.00) went the next two innings without incident, and then RHP Tyrone Lamont (4.24) gave up a couple of runs (one earned) on four hits against a strikeout after that. LHP Estelin Soto (4.86) had a hit and a hit batter over the final two frames. 2B Juan Guzman (3B, R, 2 RBI, .310) and C Nick Prosise (2B, R, .298) both had three hits, RF Jose Graterol (R, RBI, .449) and DH Curtis Ledbetter (2B, R, RBI, .341) had two apiece, and 1B Kevin Gergel (2B, R, RBI, .280) and CF Donato Ruiz (3B, R, RBI, .225) had extra-base hits. It was a solid offensive game, and everyone in the lineup had at least one hit.
