  Game Recaps (9/2/05)

Sacramento 1 (OAK + 17), Tacoma 6
If I had to give out an award for the single best pitching performance of the season, LHP Bobby Livingston (4.70, PO, W) would get consideration with this one. Bobby went seven innings and gave up one run on three hits and three walks while striking out fourteen. And as you can tell, Sacramento’s not a bad team… in fact, they have a better record than the Rainiers right now. RHP Cha Seung Baek (6.39) gave up a couple hits and struck out one in the last two innings. LF Shin-soo Choo (3B, R, 2 RBI, .285) was a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk, CF T.J. Bohn (2 R, .329) was 3-for-3 and got hit, and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .308) had a couple of hits. 2B Ramon Santiago (3B, RBI, .253) and 1B Hunter Brown (2B, .287) had extra-base hits.

San Antonio 8, Corpus Christi 5 (HOU + 2)
Though they haven’t clinched first (still tied with the Rockhounds), the Missions just clinched a playoff spot. LHP Thom Oldham (3.67, W) pitched five and one-third innings and allowed three runs to score on seven hits and two walks against four Ks. RHP Nate Mateo (3.59) went the next inning, letting a couple runs score on three hits, a walk, and a K, with LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.62, S) scoring one of those runs on the only hit he allowed. Jimenez would also strike out one over the next two and two-thirds. Everyone in the lineup had a hit tonight, with LF Jaime Bubela (2 R, SB, .293) and CF Gary Harris (R, RBI, SB, .285) having two hits, and SS Adam Jones (HR, 2 RBI, .295), RF Jon Nelson (HR, 2 RBI, .235), C Brian Moon (2B, R, .229), and 2B Eddie Menchaca (2B, RBI, E, .232) contributing some extra-base knocks. That was Bubela’s 40th stolen base of the year.

Rancho Cucamonga 3 (ANA – 1), Inland Empire 2
LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.26, L) went seven innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and four walks against nine Ks. He keeps having starts like that…. RHP Jeff Mault (3.10) took over for the final two innings, giving up a hit and a walk. The offense is running out a weird squad right now, as most of you are probably well aware. 3B Erick Monzon (2B, RBI, .276) and RF Trevor Heid (HR, .143) had extra-base hits, and 1B Andy Hargrove (.222) went 1-for-1 with two walks.

Wisconsin 4, Beloit 10 (MIN + 3)
RHP Mark Lowe (5.47, L) got the loss, going five and one-third innings and allowing four runs (three earned) to score on six hits, two hit batters, two walks, and three strikeouts. RHP Justin Jordan (6.30) went the next inning and a third, and gave up six runs, five of them earned, on four hits (HR), a wild pitch, and two walks against a K. LHP Donny Langdon (5.06) had a hit, a hit batter, and a walk over the final four outs. LF Brent Johnson (2B, RBI, E, .315), DH Jeff Clement (2B, RBI, CS, .347), and RF Mike Wilson (.269) all had a couple of hits, and CF Chris Colton (HR, 2 R, .330) and C Omar Falcon (2B, R, RBI, .272) had extra-base hits.

Everett 3, Salem-Keizer 4 (SF + 15) (ten innings)
Some solid pitching throughout in this but they just couldn’t come out on top, and are now mathematically eliminated. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (3.84, PO) went five innings and gave up three of the runs on six hits a hit batter, and a walk against four Ks. RHP Roman Martinez (5.60) pitched the next three and two-thirds and had just a hit, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out seven. For a guy who doesn’t have a lot of velocity, that is impressive. RHP Edgar Guaramato (3.34) struck out the final batter of the ninth, but then LHP Lance Beus (3.75, L) gave up a walk-off, unearned run on a hit, a walk, and a strikeout over the final two-thirds. 3B Ron Prettyman (2B, .280), DH Reed Eastley (.323), and RF Mike Saunders (R, .281) all had two hits, and CF-LF Casey Craig (2B, 2 RBI, .275) had a double.

  Game Recaps (9/1/05)

Tacoma 17, Las Vegas 10 (LA – 25)
Helluva way to start the night, eh? LHP Andrew Lorraine (4.83) went two and two-thirds innings and gave up five runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk while punching out two. RHP Sean Green (3.72, W) was perfect through the end of the fifth, striking out three, then RHP Scott Atchison (4.15) came in and got kicked around a bit, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk against a K. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (4.72) gave up another two runs (one earned) on two hits in the next inning, and RHP Rafael Soriano (!!!) (0.00) gave up a hit and struck out the side in the eighth. RHP Michael Bumstead (4.86) also struck out the side in the ninth, but really, Soriano… CF T.J. Bohn (2B, 3 R, RBI, .299) added four hits to the cause, and RF Abraham Nunez (R, 3 RBI, .252), 1B Hunter Brown (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 SB, .288), and C Ryan Christianson (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .249) had three each. LF Shin-soo Choo (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .278), DH Wiki Gonzalez (2 R ,.308), and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2 R, RBI, .200) had two apiece, and 2B Ramon Santiago (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 SB, .252) had a home run, his tenth.

San Antonio 6, Corpus Christi 5 (HOU + 3)
RHP Yorman Bazardo (4.06) lasted only three and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on eleven hits and two walks against four Ks. That he managed to minimize the damage so much is rather impressive. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.39, W) took over after that and gave up two unearned runs on two hits against two Ks in the next inning and a third. LHP Chris Key (2.42) gave up just one hit over the next three innings and rung up two, then RHP Renee Cortez (4.02, S) had a hit, a walk, and a strikeout in the ninth. For the offense, LF Jaime Bubela (2B, R, .292), DH Nate Espy (2B, RBI, .276), 3B Jesus Guzman (3B, R, 3 RBI, E, .258), C Luis Oliveros (2B, .295), and 2B Ismael Castro (HR, CS, E, .267) all had extra-base hits.

Inland Empire 2, Lancaster 14 (ARI + 4)
Payback. RHP Chad Fillinger (5.96, L) gave up six runs on nine hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against four Ks in five+ innings. LHP Nick Bourgeois (3.89) went an inning+ after that, allowing three runs to score on three hits (2 HR!) and a walk against a K. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.97) gave up five runs on seven hits two wild pitches, two walks, and two Ks through the final two frames. 2B Michael Garciaparra (2B, R, .300) had three hits, LF Carlos Arroyo (.313) had two, and 3B Erick Monzon (2B, .275) had a double.

Wisconsin 7, Dayton 16 (CIN – 11)
LHP Shawn Nottingham (9.53, L) had a rough outing in front of the home crowd, going just four innings and letting eight runs score on nine hits and three walks against four Ks. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.76) came on for two frames of work after that, giving up three runs on three hits (HR) against three Ks. RHP Jason Snyder (4.83) would give up four runs on five hits (HR) and two hit batters in the next two thirds of an inning, and then RHP Ivan Blanco (6.53) gave up another run on two hits and a walk with two Ks over the final four outs. LF Brent Johnson (2B, 2 R, .313) had a couple of hits, and 2B Oswaldo Navarro (HR, 3 RBI, .271), C Jeff Clement (HR, 2 RBI, .344), and 1B Marshall Hubbard (HR, 2 RBI, .295) all had home runs.

Vancouver 2 (OAK + 14), Everett 4
LHP Harold Williams (3.86, W) pitched well, going five innings and allowing a run on three hits (HR), a hit batter, and two walks against five strikeouts. LHP Justin Thomas (3.83) took over after that, going an inning and two-thirds and giving up an unearned run on three hits against three Ks before giving way to RHP Edgar Guaramato (3.38), who had a hit, a walk and two strikeouts over the next inning and a third. RHP Stephen Kahn (4.20, S) walked one and picked up the save in the ninth. 3B Ron Prettyman (HR, .278) and RF Mike Saunders (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .276) had two hits, and LF-1B Jeff Flaig (2B, .258) doubled.

  Game Recaps (8/31/05)

Edit: 1:36 am:
Transactions are up.

Tacoma 2, Las Vegas 1 (LA – 24) (twelve innings)
RHP Chris Buglovsky (4.44) went six innings without giving up a run, despite six hits, a wild pitch, and four walks against five Ks. RHP Clint Nageotte (2.45) pitched the next inning+ and gave up a run on three walks with one strikeout, and RHP Masao Kida (4.14) scored one of Nags’ runs after a hit, a wild pitch, a walk, and a strikeout in the next two frames. RHP Mike Flannery (6.45) walked two in the tenth, and then RHP Emiliano Fruto (14.40, W) hit a batter and struck out three over the final two frames to pick up the victory. Not a whole lot to note here, as this was a very low scoring game. LF Shin-soo Choo (2B, R, .276) had two hits, and RF Abraham Nunez (2B, .274) doubled and walked three times. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.000), called up to replace Jose Lopez, was 0-for-5 with a couple strikeouts in his debut, but he did get to start a double play.

San Antonio 6, Corpus Christi 1 (HOU + 4)
RHP Rich Dorman (0.45) went seven innings and gave up a run on four hits and four walks against six Ks. His K:BB ratio right now is an even 2:1, but the dude keeps the ball down and gets results, so I can live with it. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.73) gave up a hit and struck out two over the final two frames. SS Adam Jones (R, SB, .296) and C Luis Oliveros (HR, .294) both had two hits, and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (HR, 2 RBI, .256) had a home run.

Inland Empire 10, Lancaster 2 (ARI + 3)
RHP Brandon Moorhead (4.90, W) was stellar, going six innings and allowing just five runners to reach via four hits and a walk, while ringing up eight. RHP Aaron Trolia (4.66) struck out five of the six batters he faced in the next two innings, but RHP Craig James (2.35) gave up a couple runs on three hits against a strikeout in the ninth, and I think that pretty much says he won’t be finishing the season with a combined ERA under one, but that he was chasing that distinction at all is more than impressive. CF Wladimir Balentien (2 HR, 3 R, 5 RBI, .289) gets the game ball tonight for going 3-for-4 with a walk (and no strikeouts!). Those two jacks bump him up to twenty-five for the season. 2B Michael Garciaparra (R, .295), 3B Jeff Dominguez (2B, 2 R, RBI, .500), LF Carlos Arroyo (2 R, .312), and C Justin Ruchti (HR, 2 R, .227) all had two hits in the game. RF Trevor Heid (.130) added a hit and two walks, and DH Kevin Gergel (2B, RBI, .222) doubled.

Wisconsin 5, Dayton 4 (CIN – 12)
Home runs aside, this is what I was talking about. LHP Julio Santiago (4.44, W) gave up four runs on six hits, including three home runs, through six innings of work, but he also struck out ten. Dude’s good, when healthy. Speaking of which, RHP Jon Lockwood (2.36, S) pitched three perfect innings of relief and struck out six after that. 3B Brent Johnson (R, RBI, PO, .312), 2B Oswaldo Navarro (.271), and 1B Marshall Hubbard (HR, 2 RBI, .295) all had two hits, and LF Josh Womack (3B, R, .263) tripled.

Vancouver 5 (OAK + 15), Everett 1
Considering it was his first pro start (and a spot start, no less), one can’t fault LHP Rollie Gibson (5.01, L) too much for giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks through three and one-third innings. I’ll take the seven strikeouts, though. The regularly scheduled guy, RHP Nick Allen (4.81), pitched two and two-thirds after that, allowing a run to score on four hits and a walk with three Ks. RHP Cory Koliscak (5.06) pitched two innings after that, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one, and RHP Eric Carter (7.92) gave up two hits in the ninth. 1B Reed Eastley (2 2B, .326) had a pair of doubles, but there wasn’t much else going on, unless you count RF Michael Saunders (.270) walking twice.

  Game Recaps (8/30/05)

Tacoma 8, Las Vegas 9 (LA – 23)
Try as they might, the Rainiers just can’t seem to clinch that playoff spot. LHP Damian Moss (3.73) went five innings and gave up five runs (one earned) on five hits, a hit batter, and three walks against a couple of Ks. RHP Jeff Heaverlo (4.67) blew the save after that, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk in two innings, and RHP Michael Bumstead (4.96) got the loss after giving up a run on three hits against a strikeout in the eighth. C Ryan Christianson (2 R, 2 RBI, .243) had three hits, LF Shin-soo Choo (2B, 3B, 3 RBI, .275) and RF Abraham Nunez (2B, R, .274) had two, and 2B Ramon Santiago (HR, E, .253) had a home run.

Frisco 13 (TEX – 9), San Antonio 2
Back to the three-way tie for first, with the Missions headed for Corpus Christi tomorrow. RHP Juan Sandoval (4.19, E, L) got the loss after giving up ten runs in four and two-thirds innings, and while “only” four of those were earned, eleven hits against one strikeout isn’t exactly good. LHP Tim Rall (4.02) scored one of those, going the next three and one-third innings and giving up a hit and two walks while striking out four. LHP Jared Thomas (5.48) allowed three runs to score on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in the ninth. RF Jon Nelson (2B, .237) and C Brian Moon (HR, .229) both had extra-base hits.

Inland Empire 2, Lancaster 4 (ARI + 4)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (3.74) went six innings and gave up just one run on six hits and a hit batter while he punched out five. LHP Troy Cate (2.53, L) took the loss, giving up three unearned runs on four hits and a hit batter against a couple of strikeouts. Bit of a different lineup being run out there tonight, but SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, RBI, E, .284), CF Wladimir Balentien (2B, RBI, .285), and DH Kevin Gergel (2B, .250) all had doubles, and 3B Jeff Dominguez (1.000) had a hit in his only plate appearance.

Wisconsin’s game was rained out, and since it’s so late in the season anyway, the game won’t be made up.

Vancouver 4 (OAK + 14), Everett 3
RHP Jeff Gilmore (4.53) pitched well in a five-inning start, allowing just one run to score on five hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against three Ks. But LHP David Asher (4.41, L) ran into trouble again, giving up three runs on five hits (2 HR!) against three strikeouts in the next three frames. RHP Roman Martinez (6.46) struck out one in the ninth. CF Casey Craig (R, .279), 3B Ron Prettyman (RBI, .274), and RF Mike Saunders (2B, R, RBI, .273) all had two hits.

Tomorrow’s Games:
Tacoma: RHP Chris Buglovsky, at Las Vegas, @ 7:05 pm PT
San Antonio: RHP Rich Dorman, at Corpus Christi, @ 5:05 pm PT
Inland Empire: RHP Brandon Moorhead, at Lancaster, @ 7:00 pm PT
Wisconsin: LHP Julio Santiago (!), at Dayton, @ 4:00 pm PT
Everett: RHP Nick Allen, at Everett, @ 7:05 pm PT

  Game Recaps (8/29/05)

Tacoma 4, Las Vegas 6 (LA – 24)
RHP Francisco Cruceta (11.57, L) didn’t fare so well in his system debut, going two and one-third innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits (2 HR!), three wild pitches, and three walks against five Ks. RHP Sean Green (3.91) went the next three and two-thirds, giving up two more runs (and scoring one of Cruceta’s in the process) on six hits, a wild pitch, and a hit batter against four strikeouts. On the bright side, RHP Scott Atchison (2.25) was perfect in two innings of work and struck out three. LF Shin-soo Choo (HR, 2 RBI, 2 A, .273), 1B Aaron Rifkin (2B, R, .265), and SS-2B Ramon Santiago (2B, R, RBI, .254) all had extra-base hits, and Choo and Santiago both had two walks to add to that. Average-wise, Choo’s had a bit of a tough year (i.e., he isn’t hitting .300), but his OBP is at .376 and his slugging is at .414, and a .790 OPS playing half your games at Cheney isn’t THAT bad. Think of where he might be had he been hitting like this all season.

Frisco 4 (TEX – 10), San Antonio 7
Well, now it’s just a two-way tie for first place (with Midland, of course). RHP Jon Huber (4.78, W) did well, going seven innings and giving up three runs on seven hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against six strikeouts. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (4.44) and RHP Renee Cortez (4.09) took the last two innings. RRS gave up a hit and s truck out a pair, and Cortez allowed a run to score on three hits. 1B Nate Espy (2B, R, .278), RF Jon Nelson (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, CS, .237), and 3B Jesus Guzman (2 2B, 3 RBI, E .260) had two hits each.

Rancho Cucamonga 8 (ANA - 1), Inland Empire 4
RHP Mumba Rivera (7.79, L) pitched five innings and let seven runs score on eight hits (HR), a couple of hit batters, and three walks with three Ks. RHP Jeff Mault (3.44) went the next three, allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out a pair, and RHP Oliver Arias (6.87) punched out one in the ninth. Sebastien Boucher and Matt Rogelstad appear to be gone, but 1B Bryan Lahair (2 R, RBI, .310) was still in town to add a couple of hits, as was C Rob Johnson (RBI, .314), who was 1-for-3. Both should be leaving shortly. CF Wladimir Balentien (2B, RBI, .285) added a double.

Wisconsin 3, Dayton 4 (CIN – 11)
RHP Cibney Bello (5.10) went five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs to score on seven hits (2 HR!), three hit batters, and two walks against five Ks. Bello has exceeded my expectations as a starter, but he needs to keep the ball down more, as he’s a bit too extreme on the flyball end of things (ten flyouts tonight against two groundouts). LHP Donny Langdon (5.33, L) came in for the next two innings and gave up a run on a hit, a walk, and three strikeouts, but LHP Eric O’Flaherty (3.86) gave up that run on two hits before he struck out the last batter. 3B Yung-chi Chen (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .292) and DH Marshall Hubbard (.293) had two hits each. Like Lahair and Johnson, Chen should be heading for the Netherlands any time now. SS Matt Tuiasosopo (.283) retuned to the lineup and went 0-for-3.

Everett 3, Vancouver 2 (OAK + 13)
LHP Paul Fagan (3.42, W) was solid through six+ innings, giving up just two runs on four hits and three walks against three Ks. One of those runs scored under the watch of LHP Lance Beus (3.82), who gave up a hit and recorded an out, but RHP Edgar Guaramato (3.51) pitched an inning and two-thirds of perfect relief while striking out two to keep things close. RHP Stephen Kahn (4.50, S) would pick up his tenth save in the ninth, striking out one of the batters he faced. 3B Ron Prettyman (2B, .269) had a double, and LF Bryan Sabatella (RBI, .261) had two hits.

Peoria Mariners 1, Scottsdale Giants 6 (+ 8) (seven innings)
Two losses to the top team in the league and the Peoria M’s were eliminated from the playoffs. Well, the upside is that there’s an outside chance, with all the players moving around for the World Cup, that a few standouts will be able to make their way up for an audition in the tougher leagues. RHP Juan Zapata (3.86, E, L), who was really one of Peoria’s better starters this season (this one aside), went five innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on ten hits (HR) and two walks against just one K. LHP Jose Suriel (3.67) struck out one in the ninth. 2B Juan Guzman (2B, RBI, .316) had a double, but there wasn’t much else going on for the offense.

Peoria Mariners 2, Scottsdale Giants 8 (+ 9) (seven innings)
RHP Toma Bonilla (6.00) lasted only an inning and two-thirds, giving up five runs on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and three walks against two strikeouts. RHP Ari Kafka (4.72) pitched two and one-third innings after that, giving up three more runs on two hits and three walks against three Ks. RHP John Sullivan (2.92) pitched the final two innings, and also gave up a couple of hits while punching out three. 2B Ronald Garth (HR, 2 RBI, .364) had the only two hits for the M’s, but at least one of them left the park.

Surprise Royals 4 (+ 2), Peoria Mariners 2
RHP Marwin Vega (4.73 , E, L) went five innings in the final game of the year, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks against six Ks. LHP Worth Lumry (6.66), RHP Tyrone Lamont (4.65), LHP Estelin Soto (7.28), and RHP Juan Colon (3.86) split the last four inning and all of them had strikeouts, though Lamont and Colon also gave up one hit and one walk and Lumry allowed a hit as well. RF Donato Ruiz (3B, RBI, .263) and LF Marquise Liverpool (2B, R, .298) had extra-base hits.

  Varvaro Signs

The Mariners just signed 12th-round pick RHP Anthony Varvaro.

Varvaro, you may remember, was viewed as being one of the top college arms available, but fell because he required Tommy John surgery. He's a bit smaller than other power arms, but he's an excellent pickup, there's no denying that.

Also, in a salt-in-the-wounds note that I picked up on while at the site, catcher J.P. Arencibia was named to Baseball America's Summer All-American Team. Arencibia, you might remember, was drafted by the M's in 17th round last year, but ended up going to Tennessee instead.

  World Cup Update (8/29/05)

Baseball America has reported the roster for Team USA and Team Canada in the upcoming World Cup. In addition to Rob Johnson being sent out, the USA team is also getting 1B Bryan Lahair, who currently has the third-highest RBI total in all of baseball, and the Canadian team will be getting OF Sebastian Boucher, IF Matt Rogelstad, and former Mariners prospect Hyung Cho, who was released and signed on with the Pirates some time ago.

No word yet on the other rosters, or if OF Carlos Arroyo and RHP Emiliano Fruto will represent Columbia, RHP Tyrone Lamont will represent Soth Africa, etc etc. If I figure any of that out, or get the complete set of rosters, I'll update.

  Game Recaps (8/28/05)

Tacoma 3, Tucson 8 (ARI – 6)
RHP Jesse Foppert (4.17) went three and one-third innings before hitting his pitch count, giving up two runs on four hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against three strikeouts. RHP Clint Nageotte (2.25) let one of Foppert’s runs score, but otherwise did very well, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out four in the next three and two-thirds. But then RHP Emiliano Fruto (18.00, L) gave up five runs on a hit (HR), two wild pitches, a hit batter, and three walks while recording only one out. RHP Masao Kida (4.24) scored two of those and one more of his own after two hits and a hit batter, but still, ouch. RF Abraham Nunez (RBI, .272) had three hits and a walk, LF Shin-soo Choo (SB, .273) and 1B Aaron Rifkin (SB, .265) had two hits, and C Ryan Christianson (HR, 2 RBI, .235) had a home runs and a walk. Remember when he was hitting around .350+ and everyone wanted to call him up? I didn’t even realize his average had taken such a hit lately.

Frisco 4 (TEX - 9), San Antonio 8
With this win, the Missions are in a three-way tie for first with Midland and Corpus Christi. LHP Thom Oldham (3.62, W) got the win as he went five innings and gave up a run on seven hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against seven Ks. LHP Chris Key (2.57) got into some trouble after that, allowing three runs to score on five hits (HR) in the next inning and two-thirds. LHP Cesar Jimenez (2.81, S) had to come in and save it, going the last two and one-third innings without letting a runner reach while striking out three. SS Adam Jones (3B, 2 R, .298), 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke (HR, 4 RBI, .260), CF Gary Harris (HR, 2 RBI, SB, .286), 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, .258), and RF Jon Nelson (3B, R, RBI, .234) all had two hits, and DH Nate Espy (2B, .275) and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, R, .269) had doubles. That home run by Hoorelbeke? Grand slam.

Visalia 4 (TB – 12), Inland Empire 9
LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.27, W) went eight innings in this one, giving up four runs on nine hits, a wild pitch, and two hit batters against nine Ks. RHP Nibaldo Acosta (5.54) gave up a hit and walked one in the ninth. LF Sebastien Boucher (2 2B, 2 R, RBI, A, .352), 3B Matt Rogelstad (RBI, .304), and C Rob Johnson (R, 2 RBI, A, .313) all had two hits and a walk, 2B Michael Garciaparra (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, .295) had a triple and a walk, and 1B Bryan Lahair (2 R, 2 RBI, .309) was 1-for-2 with two walks. The Sixers walked nine times total today.

Fort Wayne 5 (SD – 12), Wisconsin 11
RHP Aaron Jensen (5.82, W) went five and one-third innings and allowed all five runs (four earned) to score on eight hits (HR) and two walks against six Ks. It’s nice to see him striking out more than a batter per inning in a start again. RHP Stephen Grasley (3.53), LHP Adam Brandt (8.59), and RHP Ivan Blanco (6.52) were perfect through the last three and two-thirds, with Grasley striking out two in an inning and two-thirds, and Brandt striking out one in the eighth. C Jeff Clement (2B, 3 R, .369) had four hits in this one, and his OPS at the level just went over 1.000. 3B Brent Johnson (2 2B, R, RBI, .310), RF Mike Wilson (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .269), CF Chris Colton (R, RBI, .344), and SS Oswaldo Navarro (2 2B, R, 3 RBI, .270) contributed two hits apiece, and DH Marshall Hubbard (2B, 2 R, RBI, .290) and 1B Brandon Green (3B, R, RBI, .219) had extra-base hits.

Everett 3, Vancouver 5 (OAK + 14)
This one just slipped away, as LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (3.71, L) got the start and went six and one-third innings, giving up four runs on five hits (HR) against six strikeouts. LHP Justin Thomas (3.96) blew the save, letting both of his inherited runners to score, and one more after that, on three hits and against two strikeouts while going the rest of the way. 2B Luis Valbuena (R, RBI, .271) had a couple of hits, and C Danny Santin (HR, .293) and CF David Hall (2B, RBI, .275) added some extra-base hits.

Phoenix Athletics 3 (+ 6), Peoria Mariners 7
RHP Chia-an Huang (6.96) went four and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks against two Ks. RHP Brian Kappel (0.00, W) followed it up by allowing just one hit and striking out four over the next three and one-third innings. RHP Juan Colon (4.11) struck out one in the ninth. 3B Corby Heckman (2 R, .303) had three hits, DH Kevin Gergel (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .328) had two, and 2B Ronald Garth (2B, .358) and CF Tim Auty (2B, R, RBI, .372) had doubles. Auty also walked twice.
