  Game Recaps (6/3/06)

Edit: Now with Aguirre recap

Tacoma 5, Colorado Springs 4 (COL - 14)
RHP Francisco Cruceta (3.61, W) wasn’t on, per se, but that’s hard to do at that altitude for any pitcher. He did go six and two-thirds innings and give up three runs on nine hits (HR) and two walks against six Ks, which isn’t too bad. RHP Aaron Looper (4.44) gave up two hits and struck out one in the next inning and a third, and then RHP Renee Cortez (3.66, S) picked up the save, allowing a run to score on two hits, a walk, and a K in the ninth.
RF T.J. Bohn (R, RBI, .256), who might be entering one of his hot streaks, was 3-for-5, and LF Shin-soo Choo (RBI, .278), CF Adam Jones (2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .236), and C Rob Johnson (RBI, SB, .250) each had two. All of the above three have been scuffling a bit lately, and I guess that’s contributed to the team as a whole slipping behind in the standings. SS Asdrubal Cabrera (3B, R, .276), who has been rather consistent, had a triple, his first of the season.

San Antonio 4, Wichita 5 (KC - 6)
LHP Ryan Feierabend (5.37) lasted only four innings and gave up five runs on five hits and four walks against two Ks. RHP Mark Lowe (0.00), finally promoted to SA with the rest of the crew, pitched the next two innings, giving up two hits and walking one. RHP Craig James (2.20) struck out one in the seventh, and RHP Stephen Kahn (4.50) gave up a hit in the eighth.
The offense was still lacking Balentien, what with that groin injury, but they did get two hits each from CF Sebastien Boucher (R, .216), LF Jon Nelson (2 2B, 2 R, RBI, .242), 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, R, 2 RBI, .250), and DH Erick Monzon (2B, RBI, .265), and walks from both Boucher and Guzman. That was about all they got, however.

It looks like Balentien is now on the DL, with OF Kevin Reynolds coming up from Inland. To make room for Lowe, Mackintosh was sent to Everett, but this may be just a paper move.

Inland Empire 2, Rancho Cucamonga 4 (ANA + 2)
The Quakes seem to have given the Sixers trouble this year, and tonight was no exception. LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (1.95, 2 E, L) pitched five and one-third innings and gave up three runs on eight hits (HR) and a walk against four Ks. RHP Jon Lockwood (3.00) gave up another run on a solo shot shortly after he relieved Rohrbaugh, which scored an inherited runner, but only allowed two others to reach via a walk and a plunk while he struck out three the rest of the way.
CF Brent Johnson (3B, .289) and LF Josh Womack (3B, R, RBI, .295) both had two hits, including their first triples of the season.

Clinton 2 (TEX - 17), Wisconsin 7
LHP Paul Fagan (4.70, W) went five innings and gave up both of the Lumberking’s runs on five hits, a hit batter, and three walks against five Ks. RHP Nick Allen (2.91) had a hit, a walk, and a K to show for the next two innings, and then RHP Joe Woerman (1.65) struck out the side in the ninth. Free Joe Woerman.
LF Casey Craig (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, CS, A, .262) and C Nick Prosise (R, 2 RBI, .282) both had three hits, 3B Robby Hudson (3B, R, .291) had two, and RF Eddy Hernandez (2B, R, .208) had a double. The T-Rats were also the recipients of an unusual number of walks, with one each for Craig and Prosise, and two for SS Jeff Dominguez (R, SB, .272), DH Chao Kuan Wu (RBI, .203), CF Michael Saunders (R, SB, .211), and Hernandez.

VSL Cardinals 0 (- 5), Aguirre 4
Someone out there is probably wondering why I’ve bothered to sort of hype some random VSL pitcher like RHP Alfredo Venegas (2.53, W) and say that he’s a better pitcher than he’s indicated. Yesterday, he pitched a perfect game through five innings of work and struck out seven. While that’s not normally something that he would do (he pitches a little like Bazardo), and the Cards are only about the middle of the pack in terms of team OPS, it works for me. RHP Jessie Nava (3.60) pitched the next three innings and gave them as much offense as they were going to get, with four hits, two wild pitches, and two walks, but he didn’t allow one run to score and struck out three. RHP Yoervis Medina (5.40) got through the ninth without note.
1B Humberto Espinoza (R, RBI, .353) went 3-for-3 and was plunked, and DH Jorge Agudelo (R, .407) and LF Rayon Lampe (2B, RBI, .222) both had two hits.

  Game Recaps (6/2/06)

Kevin Appier is gone.

Tacoma 5, Salt Lake 3 (ANA + 8)
RHP Clint Nageotte (4.23, W) was solid through five innings, giving up a run on two hits, a hit batter, three walks, and three Ks. Heaverlo, by contrast, went five innings and allowed two runs to score on three hits and five walks against three Ks. RHP Rich Dorman (2.37) kept pace, giving up two hits, throwing a wild pitch, and striking out two in the next two innings, but then RHP Emiliano Fruto (3.25) struggled a little, giving up two runs on three hits, a hit batter, and two walks against just one K in the final two innings.
The Rainiers got two hits each off the bats of CF T.J. Bohn (R, 2 SB, .247) and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, 2 RBI, .274), and a double and a walk from 3B Hunter Brown (2B, R, .274). LF Greg Dobbs (RBI, A, .298) had an outfield assist to nail Howie Kendrick at home. Crazy.

San Antonio 1, Wichita 7 (KC - 7)
LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.01) pitched five innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits and a hit batter while he punched out four. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (2.25, PO) pitched the next two frames, giving up two hits and ringing up two, but then RHP Jon Huber (5.09) imploded in the ninth, giving up four runs on three hits, a hit batter, and a walk.
The offense had Zack Grienke to go up against and Hammerin’ Wlad with the night off, so there wasn’t too much. The bottom third was excellent, with C Luis Oliveros (RBI, .238) logging three hits and 2B Ismael Castro (.294) and RF Jack Arroyo (.250) getting two each. Unfortunately, the rest of the lineup was 2-for-22 with a hit batter and a walk.

Inland Empire 0, Rancho Cucamonga 2 (ANA + 1)
Perhaps the Sixers aren’t unstoppable. Oh well, RHP Aaron Jensen (3.21, L) only gave up one run on three hits, two hit batters, and two walks while striking out six in four innings of work. Good to see. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (0.00), who had been MIA since the WBC, struck out two over the next two innings, and then RHP Mumba Rivera (1.73) gave up a run on a hit, a hit batter, and a walk in the final two frames.
The Sixers’ offense couldn’t put it together in this one, even though DH Brent Johnson (.286), 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (.329), and SS Ron Prettyman (.315) each had two hits.

Clinton 2 (TEX - 16), Wisconsin 8
The good news is LHP Justin Thomas (3.10, PO, W) rebounded from a couple of bad starts and went six innings, scattering five hits and striking out nine. The bad news? Clinton is only hitting slightly better than the T-Rats as a team and is the only team in the MWL with a worse record. RHP Roman Martinez (0.00) went the next inning and gave up two hits while striking out two, and then LHP Rollie Gibson (6.66) gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and a strikeout in the eighth. LHP Lance Beus (0.00) turned up in Wisconsin as well and had a perfect ninth.
C Chao Kuan Wu (2 R, RBI, PB, .212) led the team with three hits, CF Casey Craig (2B, R, RBI, .250) had two, and 1B Bryan Sabatella (2B, SB, .182) and 3B Robby Hudson (2B, R, RBI, E, .287) both had doubles.

For those of you confused about the recent T-Rats moves, this article helps. RHP Jeff Gilmore was released, C J.B Tucker was promoted to Inland (which only makes sense given that the T-rats had four guys capable of playing catcher on the roster), which brought Beus and Martinez in. Also, Jeff Flaig was reinstated from the DL, over that hairline fracture in his hand, and Jason Snyder went on the DL with elbow issues.

Aguirre 3, VSL Phillies 4 (+ 6)
RHP Rhonny Acosta (10.24) got a start and mostly succeeded at not sucking, going five innings and giving up two runs on nine hits and a hit batter while striking out five. RHP Felix Correa (4.32) followed him, going two+ innings and striking out four. Correa opened the eighth, but walked one and was pulled for RHP Yoervis Medina (5.79, E, L), who gave up a hit and an intentional walk, and then LHP Jose Jimenez (3.00) scored two of the inherited runners on two hits while he struck out two finishing up the inning. Painful bullpen management there.
SS Cesar Fuentes (2B, RBI, CS, .216) strung together two good games with a three-hit performance tonight, and CF Terry Serrano (SB, CS, .118), who may be getting his first mention of the season, 3B Edilio Colina (2 R, SB, .340), and C Israel Nunez (R, .312) all had two hits and a walk.

The DSL season will be starting up shortly, but for those of you more interested in baseball closer to home (and I know I am), the Everett Aquasox season is just over two weeks away and FanFest at Everett Memorial is today from 11 am to 3 pm.

  Game Recaps (6/1/06)

Tacoma 12, Salt Lake 2 (ANA + 9)
RHP Cha Seung Baek (3.34, W) did his part in this one, going seven innings and giving up just one unearned run on five hits and two walks while he struck out six. RHP Scott Atchison (5.40), making his first appearance in quite a while, went the final two and let a run score on three hits.
The offense was rather active in this one, as 1B Todd Sears (2B, 3 R, .278) logged three hits, and DH Chris Snelling (2B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .288), 3B Greg Dobbs (R, RBI, .299), and SS Scott Youngbauer (HR, 3 RBI, E, .200) had two apiece. Good to see Snelling hit for more power. Good to see any power from Youngbauer.

Tulsa 3 (TEX + 8), San Antonio 1
RHP Nate Mateo (4.28) pitched seven innings and gave up the three runs on four hits (2 HR!) and a walk against five strikeouts. RHP Craig James (2.27) gave up a hit, hit a batter, and struck out three over the final two. While his walks for the month of May have remained about the same overall (3.55 to 3.79), his hit rates have dropped (10.66 to 6.16) while his Ks have climbed (5.68 to 7.94), so it may be safe to say that James is at least making his way back to where he was last season.
LF Jason Bourgeois (2 2B, .236) is your notable for the offense tonight, going 2-for-3.

Visalia 5 (TB - 6), Inland Empire 7
RHP Cibney Bello (4.83, PO, W) turned in one of his good starts and went five innings, giving up three hits and two walks while punching out four. RHP Justin Jordan (5.40), yo-yoed back and forth between California and Texas, gave up five runs on six hits (HR), a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a K in the next three innings before RHP Mark Lowe (1.84, S) shut it down in the ninth. The Sixers were leading the Cal League in ERA comingi nto the game.
3B Matt Tuiasosopo (R, .325) and C Brian Schweiger (2B, 2 RBI, .500) both had three hits, and SS Ron Prettyman (2B, R, .309) and LF Chris Colton (HR, CS, .248) both had two. Yes, Tui and Prettyman were switched up for the second straight game, and while the paper claims it’s nothing permanent, we know Tui is almost certainly not a shortstop and Prettyman needs to show some defensive versatility to move up the ladder.

Wisconsin 7, Burlington 6 (KC + 1) (eleven innings)
RHP Jason Snyder (5.46) lasted six innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, three wild pitches, a hit batter, and two walks against four Ks. RHP Edgar Guaramato (5.11) got two outs while loading the bases via a hit, a hit batter, and a walk, but LHP David Asher (2.08) only let one of those score on a walk and struck out two in an inning and a third. RHP Nick Allen (3.09, W) went the next two innings and struck out two, picking up the win, and RHP Joe Woerman (1.71, S) walked one and struck out three in the ninth.
The game-winning run was scored like this…
Wisconsin Top 11th
· Pitcher Change: Gilbert De la vara replaces Chris Hayes.
· Jairo Hernandez called out on strikes.
· Robert Hudson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jose Duarte.
· Jeffrey Dominguez singles on a line drive to right fielder Ethien Santana. Robert Hudson to 2nd.
· Casey Craig grounds out, pitcher Gilbert De la vara to first baseman Miguel Vega. Robert Hudson to 3rd. Jeffrey Dominguez to 2nd.
· With Ronald Garth batting, wild pitch by Gilbert De la vara, Robert Hudson scores. Jeffrey Dominguez to 3rd.
· Ronald Garth called out on strikes.
1B Bryan Sabatella (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, .180) had three hits in the game, 2B Jeff Dominguez (R, .279), C Nick Prosise (R, RBI, CS, .229), RF Jairo Hernandez (R, SB, CS, .195), and SS Robby Hudson (R, CS, .288) all had two hits, and LF Casey Craig (2B, 2 RBI, .244) had the only extra-base hit outside of the homer by Sabatella.

Aguirre 11, VSL Twins/Blue Jays 3 (- 8)
RHP Juan Ramirez (3.00) gave up three of the runs in three innings of work on two hits, three wild pitches, three walks, and two strikeouts. The two strikeouts was a pattern for the pitchers tonight, as RHP Carlos Sanchez (3.00) had the same plus two hits and a couple of wild pitches in four and one-third innings of work, as did LHP Jose Jimenez (3.38) over the final inning and two-thirds.
The offensive notables have a different look, as the big four were mostly stable and SS Cesar Fuentes (3 R, 2 RBI, SB, 3 E, .152) jumped out by going 3-for-3 with two walks. Shame about the errors though. 2B Jetsy Extrano (R, 2 SB, CS, .270) will get some mention for walking in each of his three plate appearances before he was spelled.

Tomorrow’s Starters:
Tacoma: RHP Clint Nageotte (against Heaverlo!), at Salt Lake City, @ 6:00 pm PDT
San Antonio: LHP Jason Mackintosh, at Wichita, @ 5:30 pm PDT

  Game Recaps (5/31/06)

Tacoma 4, Salt Lake 12 (ANA + 10)
It seems like the Rainiers struggle a lot against the Stingers. LHP Cesar Jimenez (6.64, PO, L) gave up seven runs on eight hits, four walks, and two KS through five and one-third innings. RHP Kevin Appier (4.54) let two of those score and gave up five more runs (four earned) in an inning and two-thirds on six hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks, and RHP Mike Nannini (9.04) had to finish the job, striking out one and stranding Appier’s runner.
DH Chris Snelling (2 R, 2 RBI, .271) and LF Greg Dobbs (CS, E, .297) both had two hits each, and CF Adam Jones (2B, R, .234) and 3B Hunter Brown (2B, RBI, .273) had doubles.

Tulsa 1 (TEX + 9), San Antonio 2
LHP Travis Blackley (3.90, PO, W) pitched six innings and gave up a run on six hits (HR) while striking out four. RHP Mike Flannery (5.47, S) gave up two hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out two over the final three.
There isn’t much to say about the offense either. SS Oswaldo Navarro (2B, R, .253) doubled and scored, and CF Sebastien Boucher (2 RBI, .212) drove in both the Missions runs, but they were one-hit, drew one walk, and reached one other time via a batter hit. DH Jason Bourgeois (.234) was back in the lineup, but went 0-for-3.

Visalia 6 (TB - 5), Inland Empire 11
So, ten of the last eleven, then? LHP Shawn Nottingham (4.47, W) struggled a little again, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits, a wild pitch, and two walks while striking out five. RHP Jon Lockwood (2.97, E) went the next three and gave up an unearned run on three hits while he struck out one, and RHP Mark Lowe (1.91) also allowed an unearned run to score in the ninth on a hit and a walk, striking out one as well.
C Omar Falcon (2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .300) had three hits out of the eight spot, 2B Yung-chi Chen (3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, E, .324), DH Reed Eastley (3 RBI, .274), RF Mike Wilson (3B, 2 RBI, .343), and 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, R, .273) had two hits apiece, and LF Chris Colton (2B, 2 R, RBI, .241) had a double and two walks. Prettyman played short while Tui played third, but I don’t know if anyone should make too much of that yet.

Wisconsin 3, Burlington 6 (KC + 2)
LHP Jose Escalona (3.70, PO, E, L) gave up four runs (two earned) through four and one-third innings of work on five hits, a hit batter, and three walks against six Ks. RHP Ruben Flores (6.10) went the next two and two-thirds and gave up an unearned run on two hits, a hit batter, and a walk while he punched out three, and then RHP Jeff Gilmore (6.67) gave up one last run on a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a balk while striking out two in the ninth. If not for the defensive blunders, they probably win it.
2B Luis Valbuena (2B, RBI, .244) had two hits, C J.B. Tucker (R, PB, .250) had three walks, LF Casey Craig (2B, R, RBI, 2 SB, .247) doubled, and SS Jeff Dominguez (E, .275) walked twice.

Aguirre 4, VSL Marlins/Tigers 5 (- 2)
RHP Miguel Marquez (1.00) had a sort of bad outing, giving up two runs in two innings on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and four walks against four Ks. RHP Yoervis Medina (5.14, L) went the next three and gave up three runs on nine hits and a hit batter and struck out two, so that certainly could’ve been worse. RHP Leonardo Rodriguez (7.04) gave up a hit and a walk and struck out four in the final three innings.
The usual suspects were at work again, as DH Jorge Agudelo (2B, 2 R, .442) doubled and walked, 1B Humberto Espinoza (R, .350) had two hits and a walk, and 3B Jetsy Extrano (R, .270) had a pair of walks.

  Game Recaps (5/30/06)

The early reports are that the Mariners have signed DFEs C Travis Scott and LHP Will Brown. I’m not entirely certain whether they were the only ones that were signed, but Holdzkom wasn’t, we know that much. They’re picking up the best pitcher and best pitcher as far as overall stats go.

In other good news, the umpire strike is over, finally. Back to work just in time for the short-season leagues to start.

Tacoma 14, Salt Lake 15 (ANA + 9)
Ugh… pain… pain… LHP Bobby Livingston (5.77) got shelled in another start, giving up eleven runs on ten hits (2 HR) and two walks against two Ks in just two and a third innings of work. RHP Rich Dorman (2.54) let two of those score and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out one through the bottom of the sixth, but that only softens the blow so much. Bobby got kicked around and there’s no two ways about it, you just have to hope he can come back next time around. RHP Mike Nannini (10.29) gave up two more unearned runs on two hits and a walk in the seventh, and then RHP Renee Cortez (3.48, L) took the loss in the end, having given up two runs on a hit, FIVE WALKS, and four Ks in an inning and two-thirds, which seems to indicate some wildness in there.
The upside? Well, as you just read, the Rainiers didn’t take the loss officially until the ninth, which means they rallied back from that 11-3 deficit to tie it up late in the game. The three through nine hitters were the stars of this game, as DH Greg Dobbs (2B, R, RBI, .292), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, E, .274), and 2B Michael Garciaparra (R, RBI, .359) each had three hits, and 1B Todd Sears (HR, .274), CF Adam Jones (HR, 2 R, .233), 3B Hunter Brown (3 R, 2 RBI, E, .272), and C Guillermo Quiroz (2 2B, R, 3 RBI, .291) had two hits apiece. It’s nice to see AsCab, Jones, and Quiroz tee off against some pitchers, but you also have to like the walks, one each for Jones and Quiroz and two for Mini G.

Tulsa 1 (TEX + 10), San Antonio 4
It was about a year and a half building up back to this, but LHP Adam Pettyjohn (1.72, 2 PO, W) made his first start since the ’04 season and did a fantastic job with it, giving up just three hits and a walk while striking out six. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: the M’s got a heck of a find in him. RHP Stephen Kahn (6.00) pitched the next two innings, giving up four hits and striking out one, then LHP Eric O’Flaherty (4.50) gave up a run on two hits, a walk, and two Ks in two-thirds of an inning. RHP Jon Huber (3.68, S) came in to a bases loaded situation and gave up one hit to score a run before notching his tenth save this season.
The offense was just singles and walks, but to note those who had some combination of two, CF Sebastien Boucher (R, .216) had a hit and a walk, C Luis Oliveros (R, .206) had two hits, and SS Oswaldo Navarro (R, .252) walked twice. The game also featured an odd move in LF Erick Monzon (.250) being pushed to the OF. DH Jon Nelson (.246), who was actually back in the lineup yesterday, went 0-for-3 for the second day in a row.

News out of San Antonio is that Feierabend is okay and won’t miss his next start.

Visalia 2 (TB - 4), Inland Empire 1
The nine-game win streak is over. RHP Ivan Blanco (3.31, E, L) took a tough loss, going seven innings and giving up just two unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. RHP Mumba Rivera (1.59) followed him, giving up two hits and striking out one.
CF Brent Johnson (R, SB, .284) had another two hits and a walk from the leadoff spot, and his May line as of the 28th was /.343/.425/.438, which is about twice what he was hitting in April, minus some OBP and plus some SLG. RF Mike Wilson (2B, .341) and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, E, .321) both had doubles.

Wisconsin 1, Burlington 5 (KC + 1)
LHP Harold Williams (3.38, PO, L) pitched for four and one-third innings and allowed five runs to score on three hits (HR), SIX WALKS, and three Ks. Those walks are absolutely killing him. RHP Nick Allen (3.30), who’s pitching himself into the conversation of better arms in the T-Rats ‘pen, went the next two and two-thirds innings and gave up two hits while striking out two. Of course, with Guaramato struggling and Williams now in the rotation (and struggling as well, I guess), RHP Joe Woerman (1.78) is still the big dog out there and proved it by striking out the side in the eighth, bringing his K/9 to over fourteen.
2B Ron Garth (2 2B, .273) took the place of Valbuena on the infield and had two hits in the leadoff spot, while DH Curtis Ledbetter (3B, R, .213) had a triple further down in the four spot and CF Michael Saunders (RBI, .221) had a hit and two walks batting behind him.

Aguirre 5, VSL Orioles/White Sox 6 (+ 5)
To give you a more proper idea of what the VSL can be like at times, I’ll tell you this: both teams combined to make nine errors in the game. Surprisingly, few of them led to unearned runs, but they did end up deciding the game in a way. RHP Yovanny Olivero (3.29, 2 PO, E) opened it up by going five innings and allowing two runs to score on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks with two strikeouts. RHP Carlos Sanchez (4.70, E, BS) only lasted a third of an inning, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits, a hit batter, and a walk before being pulled in favor of RHP Jessie Nava (5.14), who went two and two-thirds innings and gave up another run on a hit and two walks while punching out two. LHP Jose Jimenez (4.26, L) opened the ninth giving up two hits and a walk, which turned into an unearned run as RHP Victor Duarte (0.00, E) came in and made a failed pickoff move that let a run score. I’ve been waiting for Jimenez to come around for a while, as he made a couple of great starts his first year in the league and struck out batters in the bunches, but since then he’s stagnated.
CF Dwight Britton (R, .296), 1B Humberto Espinoza (2 R, .324), and SS Jetsy Extrano (2B, E, .286) each had two hits. It’s really those three guys plus Agudelo and Colina who are carrying the lineup day in, day out. LF Rayon Lampe (RBI, .205) had a hit and a walk. Still waiting on his breakthrough as well, unfortunately.
Also, thank you VSL for having an even number of teams this year.

  Game Recaps (5/29/06)

Colorado Springs 0 (COL - 12), Tacoma 1
RHP Francisco Cruceta (3.55, W) was dealing again, giving up only two hits and hitting one batter through through eight innings and striking out eleven. RHP Emiliano Fruto (2.87, S) gave up a double and a wild pitch and struck out two in the ninth. Marc at Mariner Morsels has some first-hand goods on this game, as well as Sasquatch, of which I am quite jealous, but it would explain why he was a no-show Saturday.
3B Greg Dobbs (2B, RBI, .285) had two hits for the Rainiers, and DH Chris Snelling (2B, R, .250) and 1B Todd Sears (2B, .269) both doubled. That accounted for all the offense, as no one in either lineup managed to draw a walk.

Tulsa 1 (TEX + 11), San Antonio 0
LHP Ryan Feierabend (4.89) pitched two innings, giving up two walks and striking out three before he was pulled after taking a liner off his arm. RHP Chad Fillinger (2.73, L) pitched four innings after that and gave up the game’s only run on a solo home run, accompanied by three other hits, a wild pitch, three walks, and five strikeouts. RHP Craig James (2.43) walked one, hit one, threw a wild pitch, and struck out three in two innings of work, and then RHP Jon Huber (3.74) struck out two in the ninth. James may be getting back on track, but I’m waiting to see it sustained for a while.
As bad as the Rainiers offense was, the Missions offense was worse. There were only three hits in the lineup, all singles, so I guess I mention RF Wladimir Balentien (SB, A, .267), who managed a stolen base and an outfield assist as well. Yes, he did strike out.

Wisconsin 2, Burlington 3 (KC 0) (ten innings)
LHP Paul Fagan (4.89, E) had a pretty good start, going seven and one-third innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. RHP Edgar Guaramato (4.88) gave up two hits and hit two batters pitching until the end of the ninth, and allowed one of Fagan’s runs to score, though none of his own. RHP Ruben Flores (6.67, E, L) got one out into the tenth before losing it, on a single, a sac bunt, and his own bad throw, which is kind of a shame since the T-Rats had a runner on third and no outs and couldn’t score in their half (though there was a play at the plate).
CF Michael Saunders (3B, SB, .217) was that runner on third, and C J.B. Tucker (2B, .260) doubled, but… I guess you’re seeing the trend now. There were only three other hits and one walk. No one on the farm was doing anything with the bats tonight

VSL Pirates 4 (+ 1), Aguirre 7
It wasn’t pretty, but I want to cheer just because RHP Alfredo Venegas (3.31, PO, W) got a win, going five innings and allowing four runs (three earned) to score on seven hits and a walk against two Ks. RHP Felix Correa (4.26) had a nice stint following him, going three innings with a hit, a hit batter, a walk, and two Ks to show for it. RHP Victor Duarte (0.00) walked one and struck out one in the ninth for his third save.
The VSL batters managed to put some offense together in this one, though they managed to get hit four times total. 3B Edilio Colina (3B, R, 3 RBI, .325) was the target of two of those stray pitches, but had two his in the other two PAs he had. 2B Jorge Agudelo (R, .472), who can walk in addition to raking, had two free passes and was another batter to get plunked, and DH Jetsy Extrano (2B, R, RBi, .267) had a double and a walk.

Very little change from the last one. Contreras got one more at-bat, Scott had thirty-one more at-bats, Agreste had twenty-five, and for the pitchers Lindgren got fourteen innings in, Hill had eight, and I'm hoping they forgot to update Welker the time before or one of us messed up somewhere along the line because 49 IP in two weeks is absurd.

And who might be interesting on the list? Well, I'd say the bigger question is whether the Dodgers sign Hochevar and how that might affect out first pick, but these guys?

* Contreras was billed as having exciting tools, but missed out on making and impact this year and didn't seem to have much of a chance with the ABs he was getting either.

* Holdzkom was probably the most exciting arm coming in, and is still regarded highly in terms of his velocity, but he decided he would pack it up and play in semipro leagues around his house after he had his fun at the community college level. He proved no one could hit him, but he also seemed to indicate that he had no idea where it was going. More data would've been nice in his case.

* Russell was a guy I had forgotten about, either thinking we had signed him already or he had moved on to a four-year school, but he certainly put up some interesting numbers, which reflect some of the polish he has compared to the others. Another left-hander with a sub-90 fastball and a good change.

* Lindgren was billed as a smart pick and arguably the top prep talent in Minnesota last year. He was signed for a community college in Florida, but later went back on that decision and ended up with Welker at Ryan Franklin's old alma mater. Lindgren had solid enough numbers, decent for a guy without much in the way of secondary pitches coming in from a cold-weather climate, but Welker pretty much outshined him and this may be the year they sign Tui's old high school teammate.

* The rest of the list is filled out by mystery men who weren't listed in the regional reports from last year or were mentioned in name only. There are some appealing lines in there... while I don't think Scott was getting that many games behind the dish, he was hitting enough to make you take notice. So was Agreste, to a lesser extent. Hill and Brown were guys that seemed to show well in the pitchers selections, and Roy wasn't bad, though I'm a little leery of college relievers. With some variance among the JC/CC divisions and a lack of scouting data on any of these guys, it's more difficult to get the right kind of context on any of these numbers. We know they were above-average for where they were playing, but what that means is mostly unknown.

I have no idea who they'll be signing at this point. There seems to be some decent talent in there, but we'll find out what they liked from it in the next few days.

  Game Recaps (5/28/06)

Colorado Springs 6 (COL - 11), Tacoma 4
RHP Clint Nageotte (4.47, L) had another oddly mediocre start, going four innings and giving up four runs on six hits, a wild pitch, and two walks against six strikeouts. I mean, I like to see the strikeouts, as they’re getting more and more scarce these days, but I’m not entirely sure what’s wrong with him. He was looking like a different and more dominant pitcher coming out of the AFL season, and the opening day start did its best to support that notion, but since then it’s just been the same old, and not vintage old in this case. Speaking of old, RHP Kevin Appier (3.71) went two innings after that and allowed two more runs to score on three hits, a hit batter, and three walks with one strikeout. RHP Aaron Looper (4.68) went the final three and gave up three hits and a walk while striking out two.
SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2 R, .266) had two hits and a walk, but by my usual standards of grading offensive production, the rest of the lineup went out fairly quietly.

Wichita 5 (KC - 8), San Antonio 3
Ah, new blood, but let’s start with the old blood, as LHP Jason Mackintosh (4.26) went six and two-thirds innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits (2 HR) and a walk against one K. The home runs went to Alex Gordon and Billy Butler, so that’s nothing to think about, but I’ve been noticing a drop in Mac’s strikeouts lately and that may be a warning sign. LHP Eric O’Flaherty (0.00) didn’t have that problem striking out three of the four batters he face and getting a groundout on the fourth, but RHP Stephen Kahn (18.00, L) gave up a couple of runs in the ninth on two hits and a walk to get the loss.
CF Sebastien Boucher (SB, CS, .219) and 2B Ismael Castro (2B, R, RBI, .327) both had three hits, and SS Oswaldo Navarro (3B, R, .257) tripled and scored. Castro now has an OPS around .800, albeit in just over fifty at-bats. He isn’t a bad hitter for a second baseman, and could conceivably improve, but keeping him on the field is always an issue and he isn’t nearly the glove that other guys are.

Inland Empire 12, High Desert 2 (KC - 4)
LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (1.33, PO, W) rocked the house to the tune of one run on five hits against five Ks over the course of seven innings. He gave up four times as many flyouts as groundouts, which is usually a recipe for disaster in the Mavericks’ park, but he seemed to get out of it okay. RHP Aaron Trolia (6.75) gave up a run on three hits and a strikeout in the eighth, and then RHP Mike Hrynio (0.00) walked one in the ninth.
Rohrbaugh didn’t succumb to the “launching pad” effect of the park, but LF Chris Colton (HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, .237) had his first home run of the season along with two other hits, and three other batters, RF Mike Wilson (HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, .344), who had two hits and two walks, 1B Reed Eastley (HR, 2 RBI, .268), and C Omar Falcon (HR, .273) each had home runs of their own. 2B Yung-chi Chen (2B, R, RBI, SB, .320), who seems to be getting back on track, and SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, 2 RBI, .323) both had two hits, and CF Brent Johnson (2B, R, 2 RBI, .277) had a double.

Wisconsin 5, Kane County 19 (OAK + 11)
I’ve been covering minor league baseball for three years now and following it intensely for five or six, but I can’t remember too many occasions when a game got this out of hand with the pitching. I know some out there have been wondering aloud what LHP Justin Thomas (3.44, PO, L) has to do to get a promotion, and I can’t speak on that other than to say “not this”. In an inning and two-thirds, he gave up ten runs (six earned) on nine hits, a hit batter, and two walks. This is his second straight terrible start. Well, the hits kept on coming, for everyone involved, really, and RHP Jeff Gilmore (6.58) went an inning and a third after that, giving up four runs on four hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk, and was followed by LHP Rollie Gibson (6.57), who gave up three more runs on four hits and a walk against two Ks in two and a third innings. LHP David Asher (2.45) came in to finish up the inning and ended up scoring both of his inherited runners on a hit (HR) and a K, but then things started to get weird. Position players being brought into pitch levels of weird. So in the eighth inning, we had RHP Chao Kuan Wu (9.00) come in and give up a run on two hits, a hit batter, and a walk, and following him in the ninth was SS-RHP Robby Hudson (R, RBI, .285, 0.00), who had a strikeout, a groundout, and a flyout. Might want to keep that guy on the staff for a while.
I’m tempted to have Hudson as the hitters MVP too, as he had two hits in the game, but so did 2B Luis Valbuena (RBI, .242) and CF Casey Craig (HR, 3 RBI, .253) and C J.B. Tucker (3B, R, PB, .261) both had extra-base hits that led to them scoring.

  Game Recaps (5/27/06)

Colorado Springs 6 (COL - 13), Tacoma 10
Well, I was actually at this one, hanging out with the Lookout Landing crew plus the three guests that bothered to show up, and we were talking and watching the game about equally, so I don’t have a whole lot of observations for this one. RHP Cha Seung Baek (3.76) gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits (HR) against two Ks before it became fairly clear that he was done with two outs in the sixth. RHP Rich Dorman (2.92) got a fly out to end that, but walked three and struck out just one in the rest of his inning and two-thirds of work, seeming to miss up a few times. RHP Renee Cortez (3.07) came in with the bases loaded and one out, and stranded all of the runners, but gave up a run of his own on three hits and a walk against two Ks.
LF Shin-soo Choo (2B, 2 R, RBI, .290) had three hits out of the leadoff spot, and RF T.J. Bohn (2B, R, RBI, .251), DH Todd Sears (2 2B, R, 3 RBI, SB, .268), 3B Hunter Brown (2B, R, RBI, SB, E, .274), and SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, R, RBI, .255) had two each.

Thoughts from the game:
· They play Pantera for Bohn’s at-bat music. Not really something I expect.
· Bo Hart has more hustle than you could possibly comprehend with 100% of your brain. So they tell me.
· Dorman and Cortez both need to be come better acquainted with the strike zone, though in different ways.
· For being a game in which sixteen runs scored, it was kind of boring at times.
· Adam Jones dug himself holes early in the ABs and couldn’t really pull himself out after that.
· They weren’t playing Choo to pull, anything in the RF corner would’ve been a triple.

Wichita 5 (KC - 9), San Antonio 3
RHP Nate Mateo (4.39) didn’t do so badly out there, giving up three runs (one earned) in five innings on five hits and three walks against the same number of Ks. RHP Mike Flannery (6.17, L) arguably pitched better, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits, a wild pitch, and a walk while striking out four the rest of the way, but I guess the defense ended up letting both guys down.
2B Ismael Castro (2B, R, .294), 3B Jesus Guzman (2B, 2 RBI, .256), and RF Wladimir Balentien (2B, R, .271) all had doubles.

Changes afoot on the Missions roster, according to the Express-News, as RHP Brandon Moorhead was released, RHP Justin Jordan was sent back to the Sixers, and RHP Stephen Kahn and LHP Eric O’Flaherty were called up. I dig the aggressive moves. It looks like no other moves will be made because the Sixers were already shuffling pitchers around on paper to and from Everett. OF Jon Nelson is on the shelf with an oblique injury.

Inland Empire 6, High Desert 4 (KC - 3)
RHP Aaron Jensen (3.60) went another two innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks against two Ks. RHP Mumba Rivera (1.67, W) pitched after that and got enough of a lead to win it before he even took the mound. Through four innings, Mumba allowed two hits, a hit batter, and two walks while punching out four. RHP Jose de la Cruz (4.88) walked one and struck out one in the seventh, and then RHP Mark Lowe (1.98, S) pitched the final two, giving up a run on three hits and a walk while he struck out four. Lowe’s K-rate is approaching fifteen per nine. Insane.
The Sixers lineup had two hits each from DH Yung-chi Chen (.318), RF Mike Wilson (.336), SS Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, 2 R, RBI, .320), and 3B Ron Prettyman (R, .319). They also picked up three runs in the third on the first home run of the season by C Brian Schweiger (HR, 4 RBI, E, .429).

Wisconsin 8, Kane County 6 (OAK + 10)
Take that, Cougars winning streak. RHP Jason Snyder (5.23, E) got chased out after four and two-thirds innings, having given up five runs on seven hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and two walks. LHP David Asher (1.35) pitched an inning after that, giving up another run on a hit, a hit batter, and two walks against two Ks, but that would be it four the Cougs, as RHP Nick Allen (3.62, W) held them to a hit and a walk while striking out one in the next two and a third innings, and then RHP Joe Woerman (1.85, S) picked up a tense save in the ninth with a hit, two walks, and one strikeout.
The offense had some decent production as well, with 3B Ron Garth (R, E, .273) and C-1B Nick Prosise (HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, .231) with two hits apiece and CF-LF Casey Craig (2B, 2 R, .255) and 2B Luis Valbuena (3B, 2 R, .237) both having an extra-base hit, two runs scored, and two walks. I haven’t busted out the old blockquote in a while, but let’s go for it with this one…
Wisconsin Top 9th
· Eddy Hernandez singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jose Pineda.
· Ronald Garth singles on a ground ball to first baseman Steve Kleen. Eddy Hernandez to 2nd.
· Casey Craig walks. Eddy Hernandez to 3rd. Ronald Garth to 2nd.
· Curtis Ledbetter out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Jose Pineda. Eddy Hernandez scores. Ronald Garth to 3rd.
· Luis Valbuena walks. Casey Craig to 2nd.
· Nicholas Prosise grounds into a force out, third baseman Jeffrey Baisley to second baseman Frank Martinez. Ronald Garth scores. Casey Craig scores. Luis Valbuena out at 2nd. Nicholas Prosise advances to 1st, on throwing error by second baseman Frank Martinez.
· Robert Hudson grounds out to first baseman Steve Kleen.

Aguirre 5, VSL Mets 11 ()
RHP Juan Ramirez (1.50) pitched four innings and gave up one run on three hits, two wild pitches, and two walks against four Ks. RHP Yoervis Medina (4.09, E) was less impressive following him, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in two+ innings, and RHP Jessie Nava (6.43, E, L) followed suit and gave up the same amount of runs in the same pattern on three hits, a hit batter, and a walk in his inning of work. RHP Leonardo Rodriguez (11.57) let two more runs score in the ninth on two hits, a wild pitch, a walk, and a K.
CF Dwight Britton (2 2B, R, CS, .298) had four hits out of the leadoff spot, and SS Jorge Agudelo (R, SB, 2 E, .486) and 1B Humberto Espinoza (R, CS, .310) both had two hits.
