- Building materials are classified into structural materials and design materials for use. Among them, structural materials are materials that constitute the skeleton of a building, and thus high mechanical strength and durability are required. That is, since structural abnormalities such as deformation or destruction of exterior walls throughout the building should not be prevented, difficulties in construction, properties for long-term use, weight, processability, corrosion resistance for special places, and fire resistance are particularly important here.
- Stone, brick, wood, steel, and concrete are mainly used as structural materials, and stone and brick are also used as finishing materials.
- Stone has been used as a structural material in the past due to its excellent durability, wear resistance and strength, but it requires a lot of effort for processing, has a disadvantage of difficulty in handling due to its large weight, and poor workability. It is used more as decoration or interior finishing material.
- the brick has a good workability and is widely used as a structural material and an interior decoration because of its excellent structural strength, durability, fire resistance and productivity, but when used as a structural material, the strength against direct pressure is good, but the structural strength of the lateral force is good. As it is very vulnerable, it is inadequate for earthquakes and high-rise buildings.
- the wood has a high strength and excellent workability compared to the specific gravity is used as a structural material and finish according to the direction of the wood.
- the corrosion and fire resistance according to the use site is significantly low.
- the most widely used material is concrete, and concrete is cement, sand, and gravel. It is hardened by water, and is used to increase the rigidity of the structure together with reinforcing steel and steel frame with excellent fire resistance and durability.
- concrete has a high specific gravity and formwork must be used to form the structure, it requires a lot of expenses and it is a wet structure that requires the use of water. Therefore, it is affected by external conditions during the construction period and takes a long time to complete the structure. There is a problem.
