US wants lasting peace in Ukraine — top diplomat

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the negotiating process will not be smooth and each party will have to make concessions

NEW YORK, January 21. /TASS/. The United States will do everything it can to achieve a lasting peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

"It's going to be the official policy the United States that the war has to end, and we're going to do everything possible to bring that about and to help end in a way that's stable and sustainable. We don't want to see it followed by another war in two, three or four years," he said in an interview with NBC News.

He said that the negotiating process will not be smooth and each party will have to make concessions.

Putin said earlier at a meeting of the Russian Security Council that Moscow was open to dialogue on the Ukraine conflict with the new US administration, with the priority being to address the root causes of the crisis. He confirmed that Russia was taking note of statements by Trump and his team members about their willingness to restore contact. Putin also emphasized the need to do everything possible to prevent World War III.
