An austinitic steel alloy for use in gas turbine parts or as weld deposits has the following composition by weight:- .Cr.12 to 25%, .Mn.10 to 20%, .Ni.4 to 18%, .Mo.2 to 6%, .W.1 to 4%, .N.0,1 to 0,6%, .and C.0 to 0,6%, .with Fe.as balance, the constituent elements satisfying the following equation:- <FORM:0886007/II/1> where y=1,6 (% Cr-12,5)+3,5 (%Mo) +1,7 (%W) and x=20 (%C+%N)+%Ni+ (%Mn-12).
