A Sage (Japanese: ぼうず Monk) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that first debuted in Generation II. They appear to be Buddhist monks who are mostly only found in Johto's Sprout Tower and Ecruteak City.
They generally use Bellsprout and Hoothoot. The ones in the Ecruteak Gym use Gastly and Haunter.
Three additional Sages found exclusively in Crystal are collectively called the Wise Trio (Japanese: 3にんしゅう group of 3 men).
In the Generation II core series games, their sprites were edited outside of Japan and Korea, presumably due to Nintendo's policy at the time of removing all religious references in games that they published. This happened again with HeartGold and SoulSilver but only in the Korean version, where the prayer beads were removed, the robes slightly recolored and a red robe on their left shoulder added. Also, their title is changed from Monk (Korean: 중) to Ascetic (Korean: 수행자). This latter edit was not done for other localizations.
Li, the oldest of all Sages who is found at the top of Sprout Tower, is referred to as an Elder. This has become a Trainer class of its own in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
