A Doctor (Japanese: ドクター Doctor) is a Pokémon Trainer who specializes in healing and taking care of injured and sick Pokémon.
In the games
The Doctor Trainer class was introduced in Generation V. In Generation V, battling them is optional; they do not challenge the Trainer upon sight, but instead when spoken to. Doctors will challenge the player on sight in the Black Tower, where they will heal the Trainer's party only once, but the player may choose when. Upon being defeated, the Doctor will heal the Trainer's party fully, and any time spoken to afterwards, unless they are battled in Big Stadium or Small Court. Some will give out Max Revives or Full Restores when defeated. They are the male counterparts of Nurses.
They use Psychic- and Bug-type Pokémon, as well as Pokémon considered to be healers, such as Audino. Doctors will use Full Heals during battle if their Pokémon are afflicted with status conditions. Doctors appear primarily in locations without a nearby Pokémon Center, such as the Desert Resort.
In the Plasma Frigate, much like Juggler Dalton of Silph Co. before him, Doctor Julius is an odd one out as he is the only assumed member of Team Plasma that is not a Grunt. Despite his allegiance, he will still heal the player's Pokémon. He will not appear when the player visits the Plasma Frigate in the post-game when it is docked at the P2 Laboratory, however.
In Sword and Shield, female Doctors were introduced. Doctors in Sword and Shield are more akin to normal Trainers, challenging the player on sight. They no longer heal party Pokémon, either. Male Doctors keep their Pokémon in Great Balls, and female Doctors keep theirs in Heal Balls. A team of one male and one female Doctor joining together in a Double Battle form a Medical Team.

In animation
Unlike their real world counterparts, Pokémon Doctors do not appear to be preferred over Nurse Joy and the healing capabilities of Pokémon Centers. This seems to be evidenced by all of the doctors in Pokémon the Series operating on their own or in small offices located some distance from Pokémon Centers. Doctors have a wide range of knowledge, being able to treat many symptoms and knowing what types of Berries and other healing items to use. Some doctors are also experts with evolution.
Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire
In Gonna Rule The School!, a Pokémon Doctor's class was taught at the Pokémon Trainers' School in Rustboro City.
In Delcatty Got Your Tongue, Ash and his friends visited a Pokémon clinic located in Foothill Town. It is run by Dr. Abby, a Top Coordinator who decided to learn about natural Pokémon medicine after her Skitty was badly injured in a battle.
Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl
In The Brockster Is In!, Nurse Joy suggested to Brock that he become a Pokémon Doctor after witnessing him treat a group of poisoned Pokémon. In the next episode, Brock revealed that he would follow her advice and study to become a Doctor.
Notably, Pokémon Doctors have been present in the animated series long before the Trainer class was first introduced in the games.
