Virginia Emerson Hopkins is a federal judge on senior status on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. She joined the court in 2004 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.[1] She assumed senior status on June 22, 2018.

Early life and education

A native of Anniston, Alabama, Hopkins graduated from the University of Alabama with her bachelor's degree in 1971 and from the University of Virginia School of Law with her J.D. in 1974.[1]

Hopkins was nominated by President George W. Bush on October 14, 2003, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama vacated by Edwin Nelson. The American Bar Association rated Hopkins Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Hopkins' nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on November 19, 2003, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on March 4, 2004. Hopkins was confirmed on a recorded 98-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on June 15, 2004, and she received her commission on June 17, 2004.[1][2][3] She assumed senior status on June 22, 2018.
