Philip S. Gutierrez was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He joined the court in 2007 after being nominated by President George W. Bush (R). Gutierrez served as the chief judge of the court from 2020-2024. He assumed senior status on October 15, 2024, and retired on October 22, 2024.[1] Cynthia Valenzuela was nominated by President Joe Biden (D) to replace Gutierrez on the United States District Court for the Central District of California on April 30, 2024.[2][3]

Biography

Early life and education

Born in Los Angeles, California, Gutierrez graduated from the University of Notre Dame with his bachelor's degree in 1981 and later from the University of California-Los Angeles School of Law with his J.D. degree in 1984.[1]

Professional career

Gutierrez was a private practice attorney in California from 1986 to 1997 before becoming a superior court judge on the Superior Court of Los Angeles County from 1997 to 2007.[1]

Judicial career

Central District of California

Gutierrez was nominated to the United States District Court for the Central District of California by President George W. Bush (R) on January 9, 2007, to a seat vacated by Terry Hatter, Jr. as Hatter assumed senior status. Gutierrez was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 30, 2007, on a Senate vote and received commission on February 16, 2007.[4] Gutierrez served as the chief judge of the court from 2020-2024. He assumed senior status on October 15, 2024, and retired on October 22, 2024.[1]
