What is the best food in in the WORLD in Brooklyn?
I'm not saying what's something that #27 on a world pizza list. Or really good coffee. I mean what's a food in a specific niche, that's generally, if not universally acknowledged to be the best there is on the planet AND it's in the borough of Brooklyn? Restaurant OR grocery OR food manufacturer.
Business lunches for messy eaters
I am a messy eater and 5/7 days I will have food spots on my shirt by the end of the day. What are the best strategies for eating in a business context? [more inside]
Help me follow up on a trivia fact I encountered as a kid!
Recently, I had a memory knocked loose of a Big Books of Facts for Kids fact from childhood: "there is a society where being seen eating is shameful, but no taboos around pooping." I hadn't thought about it in decades until someone mentioned it exactly thus, and tried to look up a source, but haven't found anything. Does anyone else remember this and/or have details? It feels like a fable about how social mores aren't universal, especially given my inability to track down evidence that it was ever real beyond the book I encountered it in.

What utensil do you use to eat salads and if it's a fork, how?
So Frowner's question reminded me that I have been eating salads (leafy ones with lots of lettuce or arugula or baby greens) with chopsticks whenever possible. I have never figured out how to use a fork to effectively get a leafy green to my mouth. Or a chickpea (the kind that shows up in salad bars). What's your technique if you use a fork? Or do you use a spoon? [more inside]
Earplugs that don't make eating sound louder?
I have hyperacusis, so I wear construction earmuffs and/or earplugs often. One thing I hate about them is how they make eating noises sound louder. I'm wondering if there's a solution that doesn't - or better yet, that muffles eating noises. Sometimes I find myself wanting chips or an apple, but deciding not to because it's going to be such a loud experience.

Full English breakfast on a weekday in New York?
Weekends in New York a full English isn't too hard to find, but are there any places that will do a fry up on a weekday -- specifically Friday? By full English I mean full English, with black pudding and sausage as a breakwater. Bonus points for a full Scottish with haggis.

Is it normal to need more than 3 meals a day?
I'm just annoyed that I can't seem to get by with 3 meals a day and I need to "waste" time by organising healthy snacks for work and then figuring out when my energy is flagging because I need a snack (rather than the million potential other reasons I'm not being productive). I just want to know if this is normal or if I'm doing something wrong? [more inside]

Eating disorder specialist recommendations
I’ve struggled with various forms of ED for the past 15 years. Covid has worsened a lot of the symptoms and my normal coping strategies are no longer sufficient. If anyone has a reco for a specialist in ED, CBT emphasis who is straightforward and is able to call me out on my bullshit if needed. Someone who identifies as a woman is preferable. Nothing inpatient/outpatient. Your help is appreciated.
Reading material request
I am at the bottom end of the BMI, and I have to work hard not to fall off. I do not have anorexia, I do not have bulemia.* I have overcome enough of my childhood picky eatingness to pass as normal. I am not a child, I am not the parent of a child. I have a high metabolism.** Executive function issues with preparing food are also play. I don't know anyone who deals with this and I feel alone. Any workarounds I've figured out, I've had to reverse-engineer from articles directed at people who aren't me. I'd really like to read some articles written for people who are like me.*** [more inside]
Winter outdoor eating accessories
My parents have been eating on their covered front porch since the beginning of the pandemic. It doesn’t snow much in North Alabama, but it does get cold. They’re installing heaters, but what else could I get them as a gift to improve the experience?
Here comes the traaiiiin!
Growing up (1980s, USA) I remember people encouraging tiny kids to eat by pretending their spoon was a train. As in, load utensil up, draw arm back, and “Chugga chugga choo choo! Here comes the train!” it until baby’s mouth opens and accepts the food. Does this happen in other places? Is it always a train, or something else? [more inside]
Lockdown and disordered body image/eating
Covid-19 lockdown has changed my eating patterns and movement patterns greatly. I've gained weight and I was overweight to start with. I am really, really struggling with my body image, and functioning more generally. What can I do to get myself out of this hole, without exacerbating latent eating disorder and anxiety/depression/OCD around dieting and calorie-counting etc? CW for triggers around weight, nutrition and body image. [more inside]

A Singapore fridge is about to die. What can be cooked that will keep?
My friend lives in Singapore and her refrigerator is about to go. The tech to fix it says he can't get there for a week. Which means she'll have to throw out all these meats, fish and other perishables. OR WILL SHE? What kinds of foods - jarred, jerky, kimchee - can she make with her foodstuffs that will keep in the locally high heat and high humidity.

What did people eat? Central England c. 600AD edition
I am trying to find reliable/accurate information on what the inhabitants of central England - the area around the South Midlands especially - ate around 550 to 650AD. What was their diet? What did they hunt for food, or grow themselves? What did they drink? Looking for accuracy - there's a lot of hazily speculative information I've been digging up online that isn't of reliable quality. Bonus points, therefore, for links to good sources; thank you.

Easy eating for lots of activity
I’ve upped my activity a great deal this summer. I’m going to CrossFit 4-5 days per week. This is seriously tiring me out, and I’m pretty sure that a big reason is what I’m eating. Right now I’m mostly eating microwave Quaker oatmeal and frozen meals from Trader Joe’s (Cod Provençale, Chicken Burrito Bowl). Those are about the level of effort that I want to put in. What else can I be eating at that level of effort so that I’m less tired all the time?
How can I best support friends struggling with disordered eating?

Attn: Picky Eaters of Metafilter
I want to try to understand why picky eaters are picky. A weekend spent with my 11-year-old niece is prompting the question, but this kid's issues are clearly shared to an extent by one of her parents (and some, but not all, of her siblings) and it seems to be an innate thing, not a kid being stubborn. She has been this way virtually since birth. [more inside]

How can an under-eater get enough protein?
Ever since I remember myself, I never had a big appetite. I don't have an eating disorder or any sort of complexes around food, I love and enjoy food very much but in small quantities. I cannot eat large meals or even too frequent small ones and I feel tremendously uncomfortable if I force myself to eat what general guidelines indicate I should be eating for my weight and height. I am concerned however, that my under eating could mean I'm not getting the macronutrients necessary to be healthy. [more inside]

Moving away from the terms good and bad food during weight loss
I've been trying to lose some unwanted weight that has had bad physical and mental effects on me, with the help of a nutritionist. She tells me that treats are healthy in moderation. For example I can have one small thing a day. My problem is I can't stop thinking about treats and carby stuff as "bad" because they could potentially affect my weight loss progress. Likewise, I see things like veggies as good. That seems like a harmful mindset. Any suggestions on moving away from this good/bad dichotomy? [more inside]

Excellent tours ideal.
