What is the best food in in the WORLD in Brooklyn?

I'm not saying what's something that #27 on a world pizza list. Or really good coffee. I mean what's a food in a specific niche, that's generally, if not universally acknowledged to be the best there is on the planet AND it's in the borough of Brooklyn? Restaurant OR grocery OR food manufacturer.

Help me follow up on a trivia fact I encountered as a kid!

Recently, I had a memory knocked loose of a Big Books of Facts for Kids fact from childhood: "there is a society where being seen eating is shameful, but no taboos around pooping." I hadn't thought about it in decades until someone mentioned it exactly thus, and tried to look up a source, but haven't found anything. Does anyone else remember this and/or have details? It feels like a fable about how social mores aren't universal, especially given my inability to track down evidence that it was ever real beyond the book I encountered it in.

What utensil do you use to eat salads and if it's a fork, how?

So Frowner's question reminded me that I have been eating salads (leafy ones with lots of lettuce or arugula or baby greens) with chopsticks whenever possible. I have never figured out how to use a fork to effectively get a leafy green to my mouth. Or a chickpea (the kind that shows up in salad bars). What's your technique if you use a fork? Or do you use a spoon? [more inside]

Earplugs that don't make eating sound louder?

I have hyperacusis, so I wear construction earmuffs and/or earplugs often. One thing I hate about them is how they make eating noises sound louder. I'm wondering if there's a solution that doesn't - or better yet, that muffles eating noises. Sometimes I find myself wanting chips or an apple, but deciding not to because it's going to be such a loud experience.

Eating disorder specialist recommendations

I’ve struggled with various forms of ED for the past 15 years. Covid has worsened a lot of the symptoms and my normal coping strategies are no longer sufficient. If anyone has a reco for a specialist in ED, CBT emphasis who is straightforward and is able to call me out on my bullshit if needed. Someone who identifies as a woman is preferable. Nothing inpatient/outpatient. Your help is appreciated.

Reading material request

I am at the bottom end of the BMI, and I have to work hard not to fall off. I do not have anorexia, I do not have bulemia.* I have overcome enough of my childhood picky eatingness to pass as normal. I am not a child, I am not the parent of a child. I have a high metabolism.** Executive function issues with preparing food are also play. I don't know anyone who deals with this and I feel alone. Any workarounds I've figured out, I've had to reverse-engineer from articles directed at people who aren't me. I'd really like to read some articles written for people who are like me.*** [more inside]

Easy eating for lots of activity

I’ve upped my activity a great deal this summer. I’m going to CrossFit 4-5 days per week. This is seriously tiring me out, and I’m pretty sure that a big reason is what I’m eating. Attn: Picky Eaters of Metafilter

I want to try to understand why picky eaters are picky. A weekend spent with my 11-year-old niece is prompting the question, but this kid's issues are clearly shared to an extent by one of her parents (and some, but not all, of her siblings) and it seems to be an innate thing, not a kid being stubborn. How can an under-eater get enough protein?

Ever since I remember myself, I never had a big appetite. I don't have an eating disorder or any sort of complexes around food, I love and enjoy food very much but in small quantities. Moving away from the terms good and bad food during weight loss

I've been trying to lose some unwanted weight that has had bad physical and mental effects on me, with the help of a nutritionist. She tells me that treats are healthy in moderation. For example I can have one small thing a day. My problem is I can't stop thinking about treats and carby stuff as "bad" because they could potentially affect my weight loss progress. Likewise, I see things like veggies as good. That seems like a harmful mindset. Any suggestions on moving away from this good/bad dichotomy? [more inside]
