Chess pieces all over the table!
I have a simple wooden chess set I like (img here), approximately 12x12" with very nice slender pieces that are a bit too light for my shortish and stubby fingers. What would you suggest I use to add a little weight under the wooden pieces? Assume your regular wooden chess piece with felt glued to the bottom. The shorter-heavier and easier to get the better, I'll figure out the attaching the things! Thanks!
Fat cyclist, aluminum frame - catastrophic failure?
I got an excellent used bike for when my primary is in the shop. It's aluminum. [more inside]
Caloric, soft food? [Heads up for weight talk]
For various reasons, I have a lot of abdominal pain and total loss of appetite. I'm already underweight and I've lost another 6 pounds over the last few weeks. I'm working with my doctors and a nutritionist who agree that I need high calorie, soft foods for the time being. I'm struggling and could use some ideas and advice. [more inside]
How to shut down family commentary about weight/"health"
It's early morning on day 1 of a week long family vacation. My mother is already giving commentary about my "being healthy" and exercising, her code subjects for valuing thinness and being terrified of fatness. [more inside]
The weight of the world... on wheels.
So, I've wanted an e-bike for a while now, but I'm a giant 6'4"+ middle-aged dude, and the weight limits of almost all of the bikes are lower than my current weight (not by a huge amount, less than 50 pounds). I found a great deal on a quality e-bike with a weight limit lower than my current weight. Let's say that I got it. Is there any real risk? Is it just plain going to break, or should I just assume there's just the weirdness of invalidating the warranty, getting less range and putting some added wear and tear on it?
So tired of feeling unfeminine / low value
All my life I’ve been getting shit for very minor subversions of feminine expectations. I’m getting to the point where I am so angry and bitter. Help? [more inside]
Finding peace with food
[Trigger warning] I’m a healthy weight but my relationship with food is kind of disordered. I go between eating “normally” for months and slowly gaining weight, and then losing it quickly with an unhealthy level of restriction. I’m in the middle of a diet phase right now and realizing that I’ve sort of lost the plot. I just want to find peace and stability with food. [more inside]
How stringent are weight limits?
My wife and I are shopping for an inflatable tandem kayak. A good number of them have a 400 lb. weight limit. We just happen to weigh exactly 400 lbs when you put us together. So, just how hard and fast are those weight limits? We don't want to sink in the middle of a lake, but there are some really nice kayaks out there with 400 lb weight limits.
Question for the climbers of Ask Mefi

A question of weight and feelings
My family has generally been on the heavier side, and my mom has a... not good relationship with regards to her body and dieting and I have complicated feelings about all of the above. I was thin as a teen, but as I have aged, I have slowly gained weight despite exercising, eating fairly healthy, etc. Today, at 31, I got my first lecture from my doctor about needing to lose a little bit of weight for my health. I really don't want to do what my mom did and diet indefinitely (and harshly) with no real results and increasingly bad body image. How can I healthily approach this? [more inside]

Need a new kitchen scale
I’m in the market for a new kitchen scale that I need to be both precise and accurate to about 1/10 of a gram for cooking and some yarn stuff. I don’t need it to be pretty. Please recommend me a scale that you use and like. [more inside]
When did kitchen scales become prevalent in Europe?
Measuring ingredients by weight instead of volume has become more common in North American kitchens only in recent years (I think the US and Canada are similar in this regard), while it’s long been standard practice in much of Europe. So when did home cooks in European countries and other parts of the world begin using kitchen scales en masse? I can imagine it may have been linked to metrication to some extent, but I believe weights were typical in UK recipes (for example) well before the metrication of consumer goods there.
Your experience of intermittent fasting
I have some questions about intermittent fasting. The most important being, for those with eating disorders or a history of disordered eating, did IF exacerbate your issues? But other questions as well. Possible triggers for those with EDs. [more inside]
Dietician/nutritionist for trying to gain weight post-cancer in NYC
An underweight friend (mid-30s, ciswoman) who lives in New York City is looking to work with a dietician/nutritionist to sustainably gain weight after having remission from cancer, and is looking for recommendations for someone to work with. Does anyone have any general or specific recommendations in the NYC area? [more inside]
Another question about weighing down paper lol
I'm often typing on a laptop while referring to a book. I also sometimes want to photograph things from books. And so I've often found myself hungering for a large thick flat piece of glass, maybe with attached handles or a frame of some kind, that I could put on the book to keep it flat and open with the text or image visible. Surely this must be a thing that exists somewhere, and can be purchased. Please help me find it :) [more inside]

Forensic Chemistry and Drug Weights
I am a court reporter. This is what I heard: Ivollient (eye-vollient) milligrams. Googled 'til I'm Googled out. Knowing that "ivollient" may not even be close and that it could be more than one word, can you tell me what it actually is? Thanks.

Meds decisions: Welbutrin? SSRI? Nothing? Something else?
I posted recently about my concerns about starting meds for anxiety/depression during a very stressful time. The responses were incredibly helpful!! I’m back, looking for (more) help making choices around these meds. The biggest concern: As a recently-divorced 53-year-old man hoping to start dating after many years of marriage, I’m very concerned about side effects like weight gain and sexual dysfunction. I’m hoping for any thoughts/suggestion/ideas on how to handle these concerns. [more inside]
Seeking parenting advice from people who grew up fat
My husband and I are fairly thin. Our 7 year old daughter is currently fat. We very much do not give a shit about her weight. This is NOT a question about weight loss or health. We are aware that her weight may change but for *reasons* we think that is unlikely. She is strong and curious and awesome and seemingly without hangups about her body. But we expect this to get more complicated as she gets older and we want to have her back.
I'd love to hear from people who grew up fat about what their parents did that was helpful and good and what their parents did that was...not so good as well as any advice you might have for me. [more inside]
Fizzy drinks cause weight gain?
I've been gaining weight. I did start drinking NO-SUGAR sodas again, like one a day, but was gaining before that. And I don't eat any more than I ever have. So: do carbonated drinks cause a change in metabolism, therefore weight gain? My sodas have stevia, sometimes aspartame.
Asymmetric love handles?
I'm mounting an all-out effort to lose the weight I gained during COVID lockdown. One of the motivators I use is to roughly measure the bulges that stick out when I wear a lycra bathing suit. I've noticed the one on my left is around 50% bigger than on right--does this indicate anything I should be concerned about? [more inside]
What can I use to weigh down paper so it won't roll up?
This is a ridiculous question but here goes: I have 12 very large charts, currently rolled up in tubes, that I need to flatten out and closely examine over a period of several weeks. What can I use to weigh them all down? [more inside]
Lockdown and disordered body image/eating
Covid-19 lockdown has changed my eating patterns and movement patterns greatly. I've gained weight and I was overweight to start with. I am really, really struggling with my body image, and functioning more generally. What can I do to get myself out of this hole, without exacerbating latent eating disorder and anxiety/depression/OCD around dieting and calorie-counting etc? CW for triggers around weight, nutrition and body image. [more inside]
Why is it bad to lose weight while pregnant?
I'm curious to know what is inherently so bad about losing a bit of weight if you are pregnant. I got pregnant unexpectedly while overweight and immediately made a lot of healthy lifestyle changes that could result in gradual weight loss. The internet is telling me this is terrible and I MUST gain weight, even though I am already overweight. I am wondering why that is? [more inside]
How to maintain no gain

I am terrified to exercise
What it says on the tin. I grew up in a sporty family where everyone exercised for fun, except me. Many years later, I learned I had pretty bad asthma, and that's why physical exertion always felt like death. Now I am struggling with my weight and I *need* to exercise, but I am super-embarrassed, and I need to get over that. [more inside]
Help me transition from plus-size to straight-size clothing
I was Very Fat Woman and now I'm just Fat, and given my height/weight/body shape I'm right on the brink of transitioning down from 1X size into "straight sizes." This is bringing up both practical and psychological issues as I try to get new clothes, mostly via online shopping. [more inside]
Have you seen this web comic?
I'm looking for a web comic I read on Tumblr three to four years ago. As far as I know it was a one off, and not part of a continuing comic. The comic features a person or group of people (maybe not exactly human) making balloons that are lifting other people up, but one person is making this massive weighted thing. [more inside]
SSRI Weight Gain
All I've seen for a reason they can cause weight gain is that your appetite may improve as your depression lifts, stuff like that. I'm more into knowing whether there is something in the SSRIs that causes you to pack on weight despite no change in your eating habits. Something chemical, or related to metabolism, whatever.
Firming up from weight loss?
I've lost some weight (actually, I've lost some fat and gained some muscle so am kinda +/-0). Where I had "hard" fat previously I now have very soft fat and while it is lovely and squishy, if there's something I should be doing to take care of my skin please clue me in. [more inside]

Possible for Middle-Aged Men to Not Have "Muffin Tops" Around Waist?
I'm in my 50's and have a very ectomorphy body and have always been skinny. I had a year of gaining some weight (maybe 7 pounds above normal) and now I've lost it but still have those gross bulges protruding over my swimsuit. Is it ever possible for us old people to naturally lose them? [more inside]
how to increase physical confidence
[Embarrassing question filter] I'm not exactly an outstanding physical specimen. As a result of high body weight, lack of coordination, weak ankles, and fear that I will fall and hurt myself, I lack any kind of physical courage and will often avoid activities that might require normal levels of functional fitness and coordination. Becoming more physically active has helped me a little with this but I seem to have reached a plateau and it's not currently possible to incorporate more exercise into my schedule than what I am already doing. How can I become braver, physically? [more inside]
Will dieting make me fatter?
I want, but don't need, to lose 10 to 15 lb. I've read a lot of studies about how diets don't work, weight loss is impossible and "yo-yo dieting" makes you wind up heavier in the long run. Is it worth it for me to lose the weight? [more inside]
Good news: I've lost weight. Bad news: I'm mooning everyone
So I've now gone from around 190 to nearly my high school weight of 165. And dropping. Know what else is dropping? My pants. As in my butt, never much to speak of, has ended entirely. And now no pants seem to stay up. I've gone down waist sizes. I've tightened belts. Nada. So do any of those build your butt up things work for guys or is that bum-bunk?
Getting fit without losing too much facial volume? How?
I lost about 60 pounds of baby weight and lost a lot of volume on my face... so much that one of my eyes started to sag! Horrified- I went to a top harley street eye doctor and she did some filler that lifted my eye. She advised me not to do extreme exercise or to lose too much weight to prevent much further loss of facial volume. I would like to lose maybe 4 more pounds and get fitter. At the moment I am active with the kids but not exercising. Where to go from here? [more inside]
Is rapid weight gain on Abilify common?
I've been on Abilify since January, when I was about 150. It worked immediately, which was awesome. Now its efficacy has sort of plateaued... But I weigh 170 and counting. I feel a little like Tim Allen in The Santa Clause during his transformation into Santa. Psych says, eh, not a typical side effect. I say, mmm, sure Jan. Did you gain weight on Abilify, and if so, was it the kind that goes away, or the pernicious kind that sticks around?

i want to stop feeling defined by a number on a scale.
You're a fat person, but this doesn't interfere with your sense of self-worth, it's not constantly on your mind, it doesn't hold you back from putting yourself out there socially and romantically, and it isn't like, number one on the list of things that defines you to yourself. How did you get there? [more inside]
BECOMING diabetic after rapid weight loss?
A friend claims that someone she knew became type 2 diabetic after losing weight too quickly, that it caused a hormonal imbalance. I thought only the pancreas’ insulin outputwould make a person have diabetes. The person is male in his 30s if that matters.

How is it possible to gain weight while asleep?
Please help me solve this old mystery! For a while, i fairly consistently weighed more when i woke up than when i went to bed. I would weigh myself right before going to bed and as soon as i woke up. I would eat no food and drink no water between those times. Why/how is this possible? [more inside]
Thyroid slowly crapping out. Do I have to wait for it to get worse?
I'm pretty sure I'm in the early-to-middle stages of a significant decline in thyroid function. Two doctors have said they agree, based on my symptoms and family history, but said I'll just have to keep watching and waiting until it eventually gets bad enough to treat. Obviously I'm not thrilled with this, as I'm already experiencing frustrating and uncomfortable symptoms. I would love some advice on whether there's something I'm missing and/or ideas to try in these months before I can see an endo. Details inside. [more inside]
Pescatarian Keto... give me your best plans!
I'm fairly overweight, and my doctor and I have agreed to go on a ketogenic diet in January, likely for months. I've also been a pescatarian for the past four months or so, and I don't want to give that up. What are your best books, blogs, or other resources for vegetarian or fish-based keto diets? What worked well for you, and what did you do to deal with monotony and impulses? Thanks for helping!
How strict is Amtrak about dogs?
