When the temperature starts to drop, you can guarantee two things will happen: our lipstick shades get darker, and our skin-care formulas get richer to accommodate for the drier climate. Aside from that, it's always a gamble as to what beauty trends will come out on top. Much of the season is dominated by the holidays — it influences our nail art, our hair accessories, and our makeup choices – but after the holidays are all said and done, a select few trends stick around to carry us through the duration of the season.

Whenever we want to get the scoop on the season's upcoming trends, we turn to the experts, which is exactly what we did to find out what lies ahead in the makeup world for the winter. "The holidays are officially here, and the makeup trends coming up this season will be bold but also be able to withstand the rest of time," professional makeup artist Jaleesa Jaikaran says.

This winter you can expect lots of glitter, graphic eyeliner, and hydrated skin, but that's only the beginning. Keep reading for more on the top winter makeup trends of the year, according to the pros.

Burgundy Lips

If you're looking for a fun way to switch up your makeup look without too much commitment, why not try burgundy lips? "Burgundy lips will be major this year," says celebrity makeup artist Dom Della. "It's the color of the season, so think deep wines, dark red or plum shades. It looks bold but feels sophisticated and luxe."

Shop the look: Della says for this look, she likes to use the Morphe Soulmatte Filling Gel Lip Liner in Compatible ($5) to line the lips, then the Morphe Soulmatte Velvet Lip Mousse in Compatible ($8) to fill them in.

Burgundy Eyes

Yeah, burgundy truly is the color of the season, and you can plan on seeing it everywhere — eyes, lips, and face included. "We will definitely see burgundy tones on the eyes, including a wide range of shades from Chocolate Plum to Metallic Aubergine," says celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey. "Depending upon your eye shape, this shade can be worn in a multitude of ways — under the eyes with a strong line, smudged on upper lids followed with a line on the lower lids. Eyeliners have the most staying power and strength, and eyeshadows work well, too."

Shop the look: To achieve this look, I love the Jillian Dempsey Deep Burgundy Khôl Eyeliner ($20) and Jillian Dempsey Lid Tint in Plum ($28)," Dempsey says. "This look pairs well with a neutral lip in a pale gloss."

Soft Blush

We know, we know — you can never have too much blush. However, this winter, think about stepping away from the sunburned look and instead stepping into your soft blush era. "Soft, flushed cheeks are my favorite winter staple," celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg says. "I love using a creamy blush formula to give a natural, skin-like finish."

Shop the look: We're obsessed with the Rhode Pocket Blush ($24) in Sleepy Girl and the Persona Dreamstick Cream Blush Sticks ($26). "The brush you use is also a key part of achieving this look, as a fluffy brush helps to keep the look natural, like using the Anisa Beauty Multi-Powder Blush Brush ($32)," Greenberg adds.

Bold Eyeliner

If you find yourself wanting to switch things up for the winter but you don't want to commit to anything too drastic, allow us to introduce you to colorful eyeliner. You can keep your makeup as you normally would, just add in a bold color where you'd normally place a white, black, or brown eyeliner. "A simple stroke of vibrant hue can transform your entire look, adding an unexpected pop of festive cheer," beauty makeup educator Rose Siard says. "Pair rich jewel tones like violet, emerald, or deep aqua with shimmering champagne, rosé, or silver eyeshadows for a stunning contrast. This combination not only intensifies your eye color but also adds depth and dimension to your holiday makeup."

Shop the look: This one is easy to nail with either a colorful eyeliner or eyeshadow, but we love the Shiseido MicroLiner Ink ($22) and the Mary Kay Limited-Edition Waterproof Eyeliner in Amethyst ($14).

Frosted Eyeshadow

By now you probably know that the holidays are synonymous with glitter, and this year it'll be no different — only this time it comes with a nostalgic twist. This ranges from frosted eyeshadow to 3D gemstones. "Multidimensional eyes are trending for the holidays as people are experimenting more with textures, glitters, and colors," Jaikaran says. "Whether it's chunky glitter or bronzy, light-reflecting shimmers, this winter we'll find eye makeup looks that are all about lid embellishments."

Shop the look: Glitter eyeshadows are notoriously messy, but the Danessa Myricks Beauty Infinite Chrome Flakes ($26) are anything but. The pigments work for face and body and will give you some next-level shine. For more of a shimmery finish, we also like the KJH Brand Hyper Shine Lite Pigment ($26). If you prefer a traditional glitter look , the Half Magic Glitterpuck Pressed Fairy Dust Eyes ($28) twinkle and shine no matter if you want a more subtle eye or a full-on disco ball on your eyelid.

"Glazed" Skin

You've probably noticed that most people have taken a step back from the full-coverage look that was prevalent last winter, focusing on a subtle "glazed" look instead — and there's a reason for that. "Skin that looks hydrated — not glassy — will definitely be trending this winter," Jaikaran says. "This skin technique mimics healthy-looking skin and gives people the option to add extra coverage to only the places that need it, instead of putting on a full face and even more 'glossy' highlighting products on top of it."

That being said, regardless of how you like to do your base makeup, hydrated skin is really all about the preparation steps that you take before doing your base routine. Instead of using only a primer, when it comes to hydrated skin, opt for layering richer moisturizers and creams that can double as the first steps of your pre-makeup routine as well as skin care.

Shop the look: The Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Daily Face and Body Cream ($29) is beloved for a reason: it acts as a face primer and moisturizer in one and deeply sinks into the skin to provide lasting moisture. Another of our favorites is the Alpyn Super Peptide & Ghostberry Moisturizer for Eczema, Barrier and Wrinkle Repair ($62).
