How do I ask a store to pay for the serious injury I got there?
This weekend while entering a grocery store I walked past a mangled, low-lying piece of metal embedded in the parking lot where someone had hit a stop sign. The stop sign had been removed but 2 inches of the stump was still there. I cut my foot on it very badly and had to go to the emergency room to get a LOT of stitches. Since then, several people have told me that I should get the grocery store (a major national chain) to cover the emergency costs but no one can tell me how to do that. [more inside]

How should I rehab my injured calf muscle?
Playing tennis tonight, I injured my right calf. I had the same issue years ago, but it healed and I haven't had an issue since. I once thought it was Magnesium-related, but now I think it's just "tennis leg." What are the best exercises you've used to strengthen/repair/rehab/stretch your similarly injured calf? [more inside]

Coming home with newfound cognitive impairments (when u think ur fine)
Any tips for breaking it to a very independant 78 year old that he is not/cannot likely continue the lifestyle he had before he hit his head? He's been in the hospital for a month, but lately often thinks he is on a cruise. We and his doctors have been mentioning some of the major lifestyle adjustments he needs to make while he's been in recovery, but he forgets a lot.
He's coming home Wednesday, and we are nervous about his access to iphone, computer, his bills/paperwork, his car, and umm booze.

Two herniated cervical disks at difficulty level fibromyalgia
Apparently my extreme shoulder / arm pain is from two herniated disks in my neck, C4-C5 and C5-C6. Don’t know how I injured it. YANMD. I have to be especially careful how I treat it bc I also have severe fibromyalgia and could easily trigger a bad flare if I stretched wrong; am on the fence about PT but will definitely do acupuncture. If anyone here has been doomed enough for this combo, I’d love to hear what fibro-safe treatments helped.
What’s wrong with my shin?

bonk
I'm clumsy and poorly-sized for my environment and as a result, I hit my head kind of a lot. Never hard enough to knock myself out but sometimes hard enough to hurt a long time, or leave a knot. Purely out of medical curiosity, and because I'm currently sitting under an ice pack after whacking my head on the desk YET AGAIN while plugging in a charger -- how bad is this for me, short or long-term?
How can I make my house more accessible to someone on crutches?
My wife had an accident the other day and as a result ended up with a fractured leg, and so she's now facing at least 6 weeks in a ski boot cast whilst she heals. What, aside from ensuring that the place is tidy, can I do to make the house more easily accessible for her? [more inside]
Exercise adaptations, treatment ideas for post-traumatic osteoarthritis
I've got bad post-traumatic osteoarthritis in my left ankle, from a fracture in 2017. I'm in my mid-30s and (formerly) quite physically active. Help me brainstorm exercise options that don't involve weight-bearing or ballistics, especially safe, pain-free, non-ankle-weightbearing exercise I could do at home (or at my building's small gym) as part of my daily routine! Also please help me make a comprehensive list of all treatment options and better understand the basics of each, so I can have a productive discussion with my podiatrist this week. [more inside]
Sleeping Upright
I messed up my left shoulder and neck on Thursday and the only way I can get everything from totally locking up and leaving me frozen in pain is staying active. I gotta get sleep, though, and I can't figure out how to do that because even sitting is dangerous. What now?? 😩
Disability theory for a disabled gal
I want to learn more about current disabled-people-led (and probably radical) thinking around disability. What sorts of keywords should I be using when searching for resources? Who are excellent writers and thinkers in this field who I should explore? Please recommend books, podcasts, websites, art, music, and any other resources. I'm interested in a broad range of conceptions of what it means to be disabled. [more inside]
Light massage and bruising?
YANMD. Why did a very gentle post-injury massage leave me bruised? I'm recovering from a broken ankle and just started physical therapy. As part of my first session, the PT gave my foot/ankle the world's lightest massage while gently exploring my (very limited) range of motion. I was in zero pain. The next morning I woke up heavily bruised. I'm curious about why that happened. [more inside]

Why don’t pain meds work for me?

Coming back after a near miss
A few months ago I had an accident and injured myself while engaging in a somewhat risky physical sport. I’ve made a nearly full recovery physically, but lately I’ve been a little freaked out about how easily that accident could have been life-altering, or even life-ending. How do I deal with these feelings in a healthy way? [more inside]

I hurt my knee. What to do I do now so that tomorrow I can walk?
I was stepping into the shower and I slipped. I hurt my knee. Twisted it or something. It initially hurt so much I couldn't breath. Now I can breathe and I can even walk on it with pain, but my sense is that this will get worse, instead of better overnight and tomorrow I will wake up significantly disabled. How do I prevent this? Young adult book about a family that can absorb other people's pain
I am trying to recall a young adult fiction book I read in the late 1970s or early 1980s. It was probably written in the 1970s or 1960s.
It was about a family who could experience and maybe absorb the pain and sickness of other people making them get better again. I have a vague memory of the setting maybe having been seaside or an island or near some kind of water.
The only other thing I remember was reference to the youngest child experiencing intense suffering when another child in town suffered an injury.

Sedentary hobbies for distraction

Breaking up when I broke my back
I finally realized I need to break up with my boyfriend due to differing life paths. Shortly after this realization, I injured myself in an accident that impairs my mobility pretty significantly, and will continue to do so for the next 2-3 months. We live together, and he has been an immense help in the immediate aftermath of my accident. Now that the initial shock is fading, I feel more and more conflicted about continuing to accept his help while also trying to disentangle my heart from our relationship. How can we proceed? How to cope with emotions connected to limitations in eating and motion?
I have joint issues which limit my movement (e.g., need to remember to reach toward things with one hand and not the other). I also have to follow a fairly restrictive diet (but, if I do, leaves me feeling healthy and well.)
Both factors hinder spontaneity and I have a mess of emotions connected to this (resentment, frustration, etc.). I've tried just focusing on what I can do (e.g., enjoying limited sort of swimming) and feasting occasionally with no limits (not so healthy), but I wonder if there's any other outlets people could suggest?
What to do about a post-bruise lump?
YANMD. I tripped & fell—spectacularly—leaving me with a large bruise on my lower rear leg (below the calf, above the achilles). Three weeks later the bruise is alllllmost gone, but I can feel a big lump under there, which doesn't feel great when I press on it but is otherwise not causing me any problems. Should I be doing something to break up this scar tissue/inflammation/whatever it is? [more inside]

I know you are not my doctor, but WTF is going on with my thumb ?
Backstory: Nearly 4 years ago, I severely pinched my left thumb between two boards when
I was cutting them with a chop saw. It hurt like Hell, but nothing was broken,
except the nail which was split midway between the base and tip across the entire width.
The base part of the nail was slightly embedded, and the rest of it eventually detached over time.
I kind of forgot about it except that I think I have some permanent nerve damage as the tip is slightly numb to the touch,
but it really doesn't bother me pain wise. [more inside]

Unrelenting back spasms
For the past ten years, about every two years, the muscles parallel to my spine go into spasm. It can happen from lifting something heavy, or it can be triggered by banal things such as standing up from a sitting position, crouching, leaning over, or for no apparent cause. The pain can vary from an inconvenience, to being so bad I struggle to walk and once I even fainted. Right now, my back muscles have been spasming for a month, and every time things feel like they’re improving, something triggers the spasms again. What can I do to prevent this? [more inside]
Meniscuses. Menisces? Meniscii?! (not a grammar Q, I kneed help)
Two months ago nagging pain and stiffness developed into real pain and hard time rising, sitting, going downstairs etc. My bodywork person said they were worried about my meniscus. Physio and doctor etc were thinking no trauma, no meniscal problem, but MRI confirms damage to outer meniscus and some ACL involvement. Fucksticks. [more inside]
