I know you are not my doctor, but WTF is going on with my thumb ?

Backstory: Nearly 4 years ago, I severely pinched my left thumb between two boards when I was cutting them with a chop saw. It hurt like Hell, but nothing was broken, except the nail which was split midway between the base and tip across the entire width. The base part of the nail was slightly embedded, and the rest of it eventually detached over time. I kind of forgot about it except that I think I have some permanent nerve damage as the tip is slightly numb to the touch, but it really doesn't bother me pain wise. [more inside]

How to be sensitive about medical issues, while keeping my own sanity?

I have a family member who is often sick or injured. While the illnesses and injuries are nothing gravely serious, bad luck seems to befall them more often than most. They are also very dramatic about their pain and prognosis. I don't want to be insensitive or unsympathetic. But I am about to lose it. I need help figuring out how to manage my own frustration if there is no way to gently let this person know that they are being a diva. [more inside]

What kind of doctor for the whole body?

For the past few years I have been giving myself tendon injuries in quite a few of my joints... elbow's, knee's, and achilles mostly. I'm been slowly becoming more active for several years now, following an achilles injury that didn't quite heal up for 4 or 5 years. In my late 30's... I know, I'm shedding quite a bit of my invincibility at a steady rate now. As I said, I keep hurting myself. Mostly when I ramp-up the rigor, or try something slightly different at the gym. I have a pretty long and gentle warm-up and stretching routine, I don't think I really go for an increase too quickly, and only work out every other day or so... but various tendons disagree, at different times, and for different reasons. Based on the frequency and degree of pain/discomfort/etc, and how careful I am about not doing too much too quickly, I think frequency of injuries are out of the norm. Here's the nut of what I really want to know: What’s the best kind of doctor (already tried my GP) to see about this? It's hampering some of my hobbies and reasonable ambitions quite a lot, so I want to start finding more aggressive help/tests/advise. Who can help from a whole body perspective? Yes to yoga, and learning all kinds of stretches. Looking for more than a PT at this point. Thanks all!

How to prevent vision deterioration from excessive computer use

I use the computer for 16-18 hours a day becasue I have a online business and I have noticed my vision worsening since doing this. I really don't want glasses and have seen a eye doctor who said I don't absolutely need glasses my vision is 20/25 I think he said. I used to have better vision before I spent so much time on the computer. I'm wondering if there any any "techniques" used by OSHA or anything to prevent eyestrain or vision deterioration from excessive computer use .

Is there a healing power in the sun?

I live in northern New York where we have short hot summers of about 2 to 3 months and long cold winters. I have a variety of health problems, including joint problems, and hormone problems including low testosterone and higher than normal estrogen (I am a male) . I have noticed that in the summertime If I sit outside for one to two hours every day to absorb the sun I feel healthier, my joints hurt less, my hormones seem better, and I have more energy. Also if I have a cut or a twisted ankle It seems to heal faster then in the winter. Assuming that it was the vitamin D from the sun that was causing this , I took vitamin D pills every day in the winter. However, I did not experience any of the benefits that I experienced with regular sunshine exposure. This leads me to believe there is something else, some sort of other healing power in the sun that either science is not aware of yet or that I am simply not aware of. Is this possible?

How can an injured homeless person expect to be treated at a hospital?

How can a homeless person who has been injured (stabbed, for instance) expect to be treated at a U.S. city hospital with no money or health insurance? Surely they wouldn't let him bleed to death? And if they do turn him away, what are his options?

plywood in the eye

about three hours ago i got some plywood dust/splinters in my eye. I washed out my eye and put in a bunch of eye drops. My eye still hurts, which I guess is to be expected, but more disturbingly, the pupil in the aggravated eye is dilating more than the other one. any advice or suggestions?
