Tips for lunchtime office running
My employer is imposing mandatory return-to-office in September. I'm a runner and I am thinking about whether I will need to start running out of the office on my lunch breaks. Any tips to make this bearable or even successful? [more inside]

recommend audiobooks for running
I listen to audiobooks when I run. Knowing that I have a fun book to listen to gets me out of the house, without it I don't run. [more inside]
Need to change my eating schedule, but there's a snag with exercise
For the past ten years, I've been skipping both breakfast & lunch and then consuming all my calories between 8:00 PM and midnight. Eating a lot of food shortly before bed probably isn't healthy, but there's one advantage: My evening runs are much easier after having fasted for 18 hours. [more inside]
What's next after Couch to 5k?
Seven years after my first failed attempt to complete the Couch to 5K program, I am in the 7th week of the program now and set to finish it next week. Yay for me! But what comes next? I know there's a 10k version, but I'm not looking for more distance, I'm looking for habit-forming. [more inside]
Living within walking distance of hiking
One of my persistent day dreams is how great it would be to live very close to a few hiking trails. Say, a few 3-5 mile options.
I live about a mile from a Great Lake where I jog frequently. Also less than a mile from several big parks, including a small nature preserve. So I have a lot of nature for a city person already. But my dream is to leave my backdoor and run through woods a few times per week. If you live this dream, how did you find your home? Is there an app for this or did you just slug through home listings?
I think this is probably the dream for a huge number of people, so I am open to being told I already have the best one could hope for in this category. Or, if this is a realistic dream, how do I do it? Open to renting or buying in the midwest.
Thanks!
How can I stop my toilet from overflowing?
I have an older house that we recently renovated in part. (And then the new part got flooded). There's multiple bathrooms, with toilets that are respectively 6 months old, 2 years old, and the other undeterminable (at least six years old, Kohler brand.) Every single toilet has overflown within the last year, and I would love to find a toilet that has a failsafe, and install new ones in every bathroom. [more inside]
Audiobooks for running
I ran my first marathon a couple of weeks ago and loved it. I’m thinking of starting another training cycle for a fall half or full marathon. I have a music playlist, but I’m kind of burnt out on it. I would like to give audiobooks a try. I’m looking for suggestions. I’ve found good reads from Metafilter suggestions before so I’m hoping y’all can help me with this. [more inside]
Can you adapt to running shoes that hurt at first?
I've bought new running shoes and they hurt the bottom of my feet (around the arch) when I run. Has anyone persisted with shoes like these and eventually gotten used to them so it doesn't hurt anymore? Details inside. [more inside]
Ye olde gym shorts
I'm looking for running shorts in a style that I can't find anywhere. Is vintage/deadstock my only hope? [more inside]
Please recommend a wireless Bluetooth earbud for running with sunglasses
I wear sunglasses and the earbuds that wrap around my ear are a problem with my sunglasses. Add to that a cord to keep the sunglasses from slipping and it’s really not working. I am looking for earbuds that are comfortable, will stay in place, and filter out noise. Decent. Thank you to all who respond.
Running headphones that won't fall out of my ears?
It's finally warm enough for me to trade my elliptical for running shoes (big cold weather wuss here). But I'm reminded how much I hate the headphones I currently use to listen to music while running. They are JLab earbuds. They are connected by a wire, and the wire has a volume button positioned near the right bud. This button is heavy enough that it drags the bud out of my ear. I've tried wrapping the wire around my ponytail, but this drags the left bud out.
Looking for alternatives. I'm willing to spend up to 50 dollars. Must pair with iWatch. I don't need fancy features; just want to listen to music while running and not have to put the buds back in my ear every 30 seconds!
Thanks in advance :-)
Help me find running headphones
You all really came through with great answers to my last question about upgrading my running tech. I’m hoping you can help me again. I need headphones to listen to music via my Garmin 245 music while I run. The Shokz headphones have failed me and I have no idea where to start looking next. Please help! [more inside]
Foot pain. Was here, left, and came back. What is it?
I'm experiencing a pain near the ball of my foot. It was here for two weeks, then went away suddenly, and now it's back. None of the diagnoses seem to fit. If you had similar pain, how did you address it? [more inside]
looking for wide-toe-box-only sneakers (not 'zero drop')
Have loved Brooks Ghost for years, but would like wider toe box now. The rest of the sneaker is great for me. Have tried Altras, they're not better in that respect, and worse in others. Do not want 'barefoot' sneakers, nor 'wide foot' sneakers. Just the toe box. [more inside]
Upgrading my running technology
I signed up for my first marathon after decades of being a casual runner. I have been making some serious upgrades of gear because now I’m running with goals in mind. I am pretty aware of how my current technology (watch, headphones, ipod) is obsolete, and I’m trying to figure out what I actually need. Runners of metafilter, please help! [more inside]
Help me find this shirt!
Hivemind, I got this shirt as part of a race that I entered this year. I’d like to get more running shirts out of this fabric, but the shirt does not have a manufacturer’s label. Can you help me find either the manufacturer(s) of this type of shirt, or search terms for this new-to-me fabric? Thanks!
Cushioned running shoes
I need very well-cushioned running shoes to create a low impact, because of some bone issues. I have liked Hoka sneakers, but I'm on my second pair and both times, wires broke through into the inner heel within a year. [more inside]
Did I see someone using some sort of posture alarm while running?
This was my experience this morning: I'm cycling, and I see this guy running, opposite direction to me. He has a cap on, and on top of the cap was what (at first) I thought was a light. Then I thought maybe it was a camera. Then as he got closer I thought it was a donut, like maybe an orange cream filled or something. then as I got closer I heard very regular beeping that I'm pretty sure was coming from the not-donut. And then I couldn't tell what it was, apart from it was orange and about 2 inches tall, maybe cylindrical or donut-shaped. My best guess is that it was some sort of device to help him regulate head/posture, kind of like "teach kids to walk while balancing books on their head". Google is not helping. Can the hivemind suss this out?

Started running: did I permanently wreck my knees?
Ok, so my completely sedentary 30-something ass decided to start running but did not read the instruction manual, as I literally thought "just run, bro!" was basically all I had to do. I am wondering if I permanently hurt my knees, or if at what point I need to see a doctor or physical therapist. [more inside]
Paris in August

Crossing the road
My 13 year old daughter belongs to a running club. Her coach in encouraging her to join the Gold Group which is made up of mostly high school kids. Supposedly certain 13 and 14 year old girls can complete with high schoolers. Every Monday there is a informal run where the Gold Group crosses a 60mph road here in Austin to head down towards the lake. I really want to support my daughter here but I am having a really hard time supporting this. [more inside]

Training for a half marathon without running
Pre-covid I signed up to run a half-marathon, which then got cancelled due to covid. They are restarting it again this year, and I'd love to do it, but I can't train by running. Is there another way? [more inside]

Running with my little bro, virtually

Running shoe recommendation? One foot smaller than the other.
I’m new to running (just finished couch to 5k) and having some trouble with my running shoes. I've got a new pair of Brooks Ghost 14's that I put Superfeet running insoles in. The left shoe fits perfectly and feels great, but my right foot and ankle moves around in the shoe a bit -- enough that during runs my right foot cramps up and feels sore in the arch and outside of the foot. I tried the next size down just for my right foot, but it was definitely too small. I do heel lock lacing and try to tighten up the lacing through the rest of the shoe, but my foot still moves around and if I tighten it up too much, it makes my foot ache and my arch hurt even worse. Plus-size women’s cold-weather exercise gear
Before pregnancy, I used to run for exercise, but I haven’t been able to do it regularly since then, and that was a few pants sizes ago. Life is settling down now and I’ve begun biking and running regularly again, but cold weather looms. What should I wear? [more inside]
Sneakers/trainers for aerobics

My Garmin 645 Watch Is A Lying Liar Who Lies
I’ve been tracking my running with a Garmin watch for the last year or so, and have found it very useful. This week, though, I’ve been staying with a friend who tracks his with an Apple Watch, and on two runs together, we have significant differences in elapsed time, distance, and speed when we were running right next to each other for exactly the same time and route. Walk or run tracker like Garmin’s

Is 185 too high a heart rate while running?
I’ve been an off-and-on runner for the past 15 years. I use a very unambitious training schedule every time I start again, and I’ve gotten up to the 40 mile per week range without any injuries. This is probably my third time restarting, but this time I have an apple watch and I notice that my HR is always around 180 when I’m running. [more inside]
One Year to Train for a Half Marathon

Running on pavement
I want to try couch to 5k, but I live in the middle of a city and really do not want to drive anywhere for excercise because that has always reduced my motivation to zero. I have good running shoes. Will I ruin my knees by running on pavement?
Release the peach
I'm a reasonably fit male-bodied person carting around a bit more in the saddle, especially after a year of pandemic quarantine. I like short and fitting running shorts, but I'm looking for something with a more forgiving elastic waistband. All the ones I've tried are seemingly meant for dudes with bony twentysomething midsections. Options? [more inside]
Why are so many people running in the street lately?
In the last year, I've noticed a huge increase in the number of runners who are using the edge of the road rather than the sidewalk. I thought it was a response to poor snow and ice clearance, but it hasn't changed now that we're experiencing summer weather and the sidewalks and parks are wide open. Why are they doing it? Is it organized? Does it have a name? Or, am I just now noticing something that's always existed? [more inside]
How many km per hour pace is considered jogging and what pace is running
I'm not sure if age matters. I'm 67. Last summer, my last 5k races, I was 6.37 and 7.07 min per km. Now I started training for a 10k race and I'm started to work up my distance to 10k before I work on my pace. I'm very slow now having been in all winter so I wondered when am I jogging and when am I running.
Run coaching app with in ear instructions?

What kind of maximum heart rate are elite runners hitting?
I am having an argument with a friend. And I claimed that I think elite runners are very capable of going well over 200, or even 210 BPM. I can't find any reliable article to back this up. I found a reddit thread where plenty of people claimed over 210 or even 220. But can someone help me find an article with reliable data? Thanks!!
Help me find something positive to read about running short distances
I'm looking for some things to read about running regularly but briefly. I know, intellectually, it's good for my brain (also, I'm guessing, my heart?) to actually get out and do the 20 or 30 minutes of running, and definitely better than not doing it, but it feels small and sad to me sometimes. Help me find some motivational things to read. [more inside]
