How to stop Chrome suddenly pushing me unwanted news notifications?
Soon after doing a big Windows 11 update, Chrome started the fantastically irritating habit of pushing very unasked-for news notifications in vertical rectangles on the bottom-right corner of my browser window. This must stop. [more inside]
What are some good Youtube channels on current events for a 13-year-old?
A 13-year-old of my acquaintance is very interested in current events and Youtube, and I don't want to see the algorithm steer him into a cesspit of hatred. What channels should I recommend to help encourage a non-hateful, reality-based view of the world?
How Are You Planning to Stay Sane During Trump 2.0?
While I've been largely avoiding the news since November 5th, I can't bury my head in the sand indefinitely. What are your strategies for digesting news without being constantly nauseated by the latest Trump awfulness? [more inside]
Old Colleage - Terrible News, Pass Along (CW: bad stuff inside)
A couple of weeks ago, my old colleague (lets call her M) passed away tragically, and turns out all signs point to spousal abuse and eventual tragedy. We weren't super close, but I was her first manager, and over the years, we ended up working together a lot, with her even managing me at times. She was a pretty big deal in our company eventually. I know that some of my other current and ex colleagues knew her. They may not know about the situation, I am conflicted about letting people know and also pushing for our company to address it. Some details inside [more inside]
best ways to keep up with the best legislators for non social media user
What are the best avenues for keeping up with the best legislators for someone who has no social media accounts? Also: who are your favorite legislators to follow? [more inside]
Site that tracked the Trump administration?
Does anyone remember the site during the first Trump administration that posted simple factual statements each day about what the administration did that day? No judgemental phrasing, just "X said Y. Department of Z decided A." [more inside]
political podcasts I can stomach?
So I used to be a pretty regular (or obsessive) listener of political podcasts. I listened to The Daily, Pod Save America, The Weeds, etc. But for a few years I've just found the NYT/Vox/Crooked Media world to be smug, neoliberal, and not in touch with the current left. I think a lot of Mefites agree. Who should I listen to instead? [more inside]
How to keep up with the news in a sane manner (i.e. weekly)
For the next several years, I'd like to reduce my news consumption to once a week, while also getting alerts for truly critical events. Is this possible? [more inside]
So it's come to this
Cancelling the Washington Post; looking for a digital subscription to a paper/news org with good national coverage and, you know, integrity.

How to find ALL public statements made by Donald Trump in 2024?
I'm trying to make a virtual version of who he is right NOW. To do that means getting every rally speech, every interview, every debate answer, every time he's called into Fox and Friends or anyone else. Is there somewhere that keeps track of all this or anywhere I can find this all?
Journalism and Quote Farm usage
I read this comment * on BlueSky in a thread about NY Times poll voter quote from a low-key infamous disreputable source explaining that according to an insider that bad sources often come from "quote farm agencies" and I am wondering if anyone could provide some insights into this practice. What news websites have "lite" versions?
I am absolutely in love with CBC Lite (I might make an FPP about it) and wondering if there are other news sites that have a version like this. [more inside]
What does "outrage" look like?
Many of my fellow American liberals frequently complain about the media's coverage of Trump and the Republican Party. They say things like "Where is the outrage? Why not call it out as fascism? Why treat [X] as legitimate political policy and not the horrifying violation of the Constitution that it is?" [more inside]
How do news outlets come to have such strong political biases?
It's easy to observe that different news outlets have different political biases, but I'd love to have a clear, simple explanation of WHY those biases exist, and HOW they develop and intensify. Can you explain it? [more inside]
Tell me more about news music. What is it doing to me?
A lot of news and current affairs channels use theme music that I would describe as orchestral, rising, presidential, and military. It often has heavy use of brass, strings, drums, satellite beeps, and whooshes. Intuitively, I feel that this music inserts a lot of bias into the stories covered. It feels a bit aggressive and it also implies credibility, gravitas and urgency. To me, it feels like it could create a sense of danger, fear, and reliance on the news, or even a need for protection from "the assault" of the news. Has anyone studied or quantified this? Can any musicians break it down? [more inside]
What's the best news newsletter?
I've been subscribing to the Need2Know email newsletter for years because I loved that it was a brief, simple recap of the 10 biggest news stories of the day. Unfortunately, now that their parent company has been acquired, the newsletter is just a list of 5 clickbait links and no longer the useful daily news recap I liked before. What's the replacement? What do I need to read or watch to catch up on 94 days of genocidal war?
I had scheduled surgery across the US shortly after Oct 7th, and then stayed relatively out of touch since then. What's the best way to get up to speed? [more inside]
Exactly when did JonBenet Ramsey's death become a major news story?
When someone asks me "what was the first major news story you remember", my default answer is Princess Diana's death (I'm in my early 30s). I remember exactly where I was and my parents having to explain what happened. However, I remember the early media coverage of JonBenet Ramsey's death very well (which scared me as a child, especially since she was so close to me in age). Yet it couldn't have been a national news story on Christmas Day 1996. When did the story gain traction in the news (national and worldwide) and become a "household name"?
The (written) daily news in 2023— does it exist?
It seems much of the news has shifted to video or podcasts. Is there a news source that you trust that puts out a daily written edition? [more inside]
Trump trial coverage without politics?
I find myself refreshing social media waiting for updates on the Trump trials. Is there a rss feed, newsletter, or website that posts daily updates on what happens across the multiple trials? I'd like to get my updates and log off, instead of having to assess and sort out all the other news and opinion. [more inside]
Alternatives to the New York Times?
I just reached my breaking point with the Times this morning. Looking for highly-regarded sources of international and national (United States) news. [more inside]
Literal newsreader app
While I'm driving, it would be nice to hear the news, since I can't read it. I can tune in the radio, sure, but it's pretty much just the oasis of NPR in a sea of conservative extremist media. So I'm wondering if there is a way to listen to NYTimes or WaPo articles (for example) from my iPhone's web browser. Perhaps some iOS accessibility functionality, but perhaps something that is more automatic in reading text from articles I select to listen to whilst driving, instead of having to highlight text and copy and manually paste it into a reader, which I can't do while driving. Does such a thing exist?
Does this rhetorical device have a name?
A news story begins by describing a situation without identifying the protagonists or setting. The second paragraph then says, "You may think we're talking about blah blah, but we're really talking about blee blee." See, for example, this New York Times article about Google+ and Threads. Why a local TV station has more of non-local news
I cycle between KOIN, KGW, KPTV and KATU in Portland for TV news. I notice the first three focus almost exclusively on local news, that being west of the Cascades and mostly Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties. [more inside]
Horizon scanning service

How do you share a curated list of links to articles these days?
Is there a great and easy-to-use service for sharing a visually-appealing curated list of links to news articles these days, by making a public link and sharing the URL? Many services seem to be geared toward sharing with friends on social media, but I want to be able to share with people that I am not linked to on social media. Bonus points if the presentation is visually appealing--like Pocket or Pinterest--rather than just a bland textual list.

US network news year-end video montages from the 1990s
This front page post reminds me: when I was a child watching US network TV in the 1990s, I used to watch the evening national newscasts (ABC and CBS more than NBC, as I recall). I remember that, on the last weekday of the year, the news show would usually broadcast a collection of clips summarizing the year's news, often using a soundtrack of pop music released that year. I've tried and failed to find some of these online. How can I find and rewatch these montages? [more inside]
article about cheap and effective local news organization?
I read an article within the last three or so years wherein the author describes creating a new journalism organization that focused on local news in daily digest format; the model was (at the time of the article) successful and relatively inexpensive, and I'd like to read the article again, but I am having no luck finding it. What's the best replacement for Google News
I hate the new interface. It's harder to read, it takes more time to read, there is less actual content, the content isn't as varied (news, sports, entertainment, business, etc.). What's the best alternative that doesn't require me to log in or set up an account (which I also refuse to do with Google) and includes at least some Canadian news in the overall roundup? I don't want to limit myself to just one source (i.e. one news channel or one newspaper) as I like having a diversity of sources presented.
Cheap access to press release service
I am writing some press releases related to MetaFilter as part of the community effort to keep this boat afloat. In addition to targeted journalists/outlets, I also want to get the word out to as many places as possible. PR Newswire and similar services cost money. This is a zero-budget affair. Does anyone have deeply discounted or free access to one of these services? Would want to use it potentially three times; next week, in early December, and sometime in January. But getting access once only would totally work. Ideas?
How can I create a personal news and data monitor with autoupdates?
I have a third monitor for my Mac and am interested in creating an "at a glance" screen (either in software or a webpage) that would have multiple widgets that auto-update. Things like a news feed, Twitter feed, weather radar, stocks. A bit like Apple Widgets, but displaying all the time on a dedicated screen. Any options?
Stories about proliferation of "Internet News"
I'm seeing more and more "news" stories that are about the Internet. Not in-depth interesting stories but lazy things that are essentially copy pastes from r/AITA or descriptions of TikTok posts with no research into whether they are even true, who is involved, etc. They used to have headlines implying action where there was none, describing statements as "blasts" for instance, but now they pretend that the aggregate of internet opinions are some kind of polling data, beginning with "internet sides with____". Where can I find an article about these articles, like an article I read about the rise of the chumbox?
News Dashboard or App?
I want an app or a web page (or even a newsletter!) where I can select a variety of topics/places I'd like to see the top three headlines about (ideally from non-crap news sources), and only those things. It'd be nice if it also showed me weather in selected cities. [more inside]
Best sources of local news in the North Seattle metro area?
I recently moved to an area a bit north of Seattle (Everett/Marysville/Lake Stevens area) and I'd like to get some good sources of local and state news, preferably as an email digest to my inbox. I'm willing to pay for a subscription. Any suggestions? [more inside]

Why am I suddenly getting captcha pics on subscription websites?
I subscribe to the Atlantic and the Washington Post inter alia. A couple of weeks ago the Atlantic started serving me up captcha pictures when I try to log on. Today, the Washington Post started doing that too. I use Chrome, but I don't think it's a browser issue because I get the same with Opera. I still get it after clearing my cache. What's going on? Why such a weird layer of additional sludge clogging up access to websites I pay good money to view?
What Are the Best News Aggregators in 2022?
I've largely unplugged from social media over the past year. This has been mostly good, but I am trying to rebuild how I get my news (used to be Twitter). [more inside]
global context for every little question?
Is there a good place to find news and updates that inform people in the USA/western/liberal bubble about how other countries are doing? I'm particularly interested in how other cultures might have different conceptions, different responses to, and different outcomes for: (A) COVID (B) housing and homelessness (C) mental health (D) the economy, small businesses, and workers rights (E) quality of life (F) racial equity (G) pragmatism and resiliency [more inside]
Good European RSS feeds
I'm looking for good suggestions of European RSS feeds to follow. I'm in the UK and have been using an RSS feed for years to follow my favourite sites. I've become aware that I have a bit of a bias towards sites in the UK and USA - and would like to change this. [more inside]
Unbiased news sources?
I am looking for a more unbiased short-form news service. This particular report on the NBC Nightly News on 12/5/2021 seemed blatantly funded by the fossil fuel lobby. [more inside]
How do you print articles in 2021?
It used to be easy to print news articles from the web, and there was even a little printer button on many websites. Now it seems difficult to print anything. Even copying and pasting an article into a word processor does not always work. Are there any easy solutions to this?

Daily international news show a la The World in video form?
Looking for a daily international-focused world news and features program in video format, ideally accessible with a Roku or on Youtube. Thoughtful reporting, longer segments and a generally neutral tone. In short, something like public radio's The World, but on TV. Any suggestions?
Alternatives to The Guardian
As the title says, I'm looking for suggestions for alternative news sites to The Guardian. I'm in the UK, politically left, and am happy to pay for an online subscription. For context, I've cancelled my Guardian sub due to their trans rights coverage.
Need to find recent bar chart of global COVID relief amounts
In the last 7-10 days, I saw a bar chart of different countries' stimulus/relief amounts, most likely on a major English-language news site. The bars were ranked by amount of relief as a percentage of GDP, with the U.S. at the top. The U.S. bar included all three U.S. COVID relief bills, showing how much of the U.S. total each bill comprised. If it helps, the bars were yellow. Can you please help me find it?
Live TV news headsets
When a journalist or anchor is speaking to camera, what do they hear in their headset? Are there a lot of prompts? Or do they only hear corrections for when they make a mistake?
