Anonymous career options?
I’ve recently been told by different people that for careers as diverse and seemingly not… self-promotey as ESL teacher and dietitian, in order to be competitive and succeed you need an “online presence” and a “personal brand “. Please tell me this isn’t true. [more inside]
who are we following on bsky for just pure fun?
Looking for more Bluesky accounts like “cats being weird little guys” that post fun silly stuff. Recommendations?
Converting my existing social media accounts into cause driven ones?
Hello. I find I have a very important message to get out to the world that is highly time sensitive and am unsure if I ought to start brand new accounts for this purpose or just convert my existing personal accounts into these more professional, purpose driven ones. [more inside]
How can I get my Bluesky posts into a CSV?
Recently I'd asked for help on getting my Twitter archive into a CSV format, and now I'd like to do something similar with my Bluesky posts. [more inside]
Help me find this thing I saw on social media about division of labor
On Insta, I saw a post that maybe originated there or TikTok or elsewhere: it was an example of the way household chores are handled, and started on a tight circle and then zoomed out as a man explained it. I want to find it again and failed to save it; details inside. [more inside]
Looking for a specific article/news release from October re: Israel
I have a memory that very early on, like maybe October 10 or the like, there was an IDF social media post featuring a very old veteran pitching in, wearing the modern uniform. It was then alleged by others that the same man was on the public record as having participated in a rather grievous crime.
The problem: Lost in the flood of news, I can't find *anything*. At very least, the original post did occur, I'm confident I didn't hallucinate it whole-cloth. [more inside]

Account instantly deleted by Instagram - no way to appeal?
I am uncomfortable with the idea of social media and am not a regular user. Nevertheless, today I tried to create an Instagram account for a photography project, which was deleted immediately for violating their terms with no possibility of appeal. Why would this be and how can I avoid such a fate for subsequent accounts I try to create? [more inside]
Navigating Child Safety in Roblox: Help Me!
I'm concerned about my 10 year old daughter's safety on Roblox and need some advice. How do I guard her safety, especially when existing safeguards like the 'no chat' feature are circumvented via "signs" that people write and hold up in the game? What other measure can I take? She's already blocked from chatting and spending IRL money. Also, I just need an over-anxious-parent reality check. [more inside]
Reengaging the neighborhood, building community. Print? Digital?
I'm on the neighborhood board in a mid-size (500,000+) U.S. city that, like many, has undergone major demographic shifts in recent years. Key among them, lots of large apartment buildings sprouting up, filled with childless folks age 20-35, many transplants to the city. I'm looking for suggestions on community engagement, w/ print vs. digital question within. [more inside]
How do older/non-mainstream songs go viral on TikTok?
I know, or can guess, that newer, popular songs can be promoted through the app. But what about the older ones that randomly go viral?

Social Media content creator is an actual job.
As a volunteer gig, I took over my UU church's Instagram account. Since I'm on social media a lot (at least as much, if not more than the average elder millenial), I thought it'd be an easy thing to do - post some pictures, figure out some hashtags, make sure that people know we exist, expand our reach. Step 1 of this process, making content to post, is not nearly as easy as it looks, or as easy and carefree as having a personal page. Do you have any good church Instagrams that you follow? Or, if not churches, community organizations? I'd like some inspiration of how to do a decent job of this. [more inside]
Trying to find the Oct 7/8 IG post everyone was sharing.
Hello! I'm working on an article regarding recent current events and I wanted to highlight the Instagram post many people (especially in the US) shared to their Instagram stories. It was a black background with white text and it started by saying something along the lines of "killing children is always bad" and then the second paragraph was about how your Jewish neighbors are scared. I've tried googling those criteria and I can't find it!
How do delete my reddit account with history
I'm late to the game, but I'm finally thoroughly sick of reddit and I want to delete my account. More importantly, I would like to delete all my comments, preferably by overwriting them with "lorem ipsum" or whatever. This is an old account -- back from when Metafilter introduced me to this albatross, and I help moderate a number of subs. So doing as thorough a job of wiping my comment history is important to me. I stand by all the comments I've made so nothing embarrassing to me or incriminating, but I want it all gone. The tools I'm finding via google seem to have been broken by the recent-ish api changes. Anyone have a current script or app that I could use to accomplish this? I can do this via Windows or Linux, just preferably not one comment at a time.
How can I grow my social media presence as a journalist?

How to nicely post links on bsky?
When I post links on Twitter, the link in the resulting post will automatically be expanded to a kind of thumbnail or snapshot that gives an impression of what the link content contains, which makes it easier to share with others. However, doing the same on bluesky/bsky just posts the link URL itself, and no thumbnail/snapshot. What can I do differently on bsky to automagically get the same effect as Twitter?
Posting social media with links
Help a social media newb out please! I would like to post short social media (Reels, TikToks, etc) that links back to very specific posts on MetaFilter. But this doesn't seem possible, probably because most platforms want to keep you on their platform.
Is there a way to do this or am I thinking about this in the wrong way? Explain it to me like Gen Xer who is mostly comfortable with technology.
Has Googling yourself changed how you interact with the 'net?
#metafilterfundraiser2023. Have you ever Googled yourself? Were you surprised by the information you found? Did it cause you to change how you post on the 'net and/or social media and if so, what changes did you make?

Changes to Discord?
I've seen a few mentions recently in the context of the brouhaha at Reddit about enshittification-style changes at Discord. But I use Discord and the only thing I'm aware of is a change to the formatting of usernames (which is still in the process of being rolled out), which seems to me to be not a big deal at all. Can someone explain what's afoot at Discord (if anything) and why people are upset about it?
Confused about Facebook giving access to another user...
I haven't used Facebook for many years, but I wanted something on Marketplace that a friend sent me a link to. I signed up for a new account using my long-time phone number. It texted me a code to use. I used it. And found myself logged into some Chinese person's account with friends and a feed and everything. I logged out, created a new account with the same number, and now I seem to have a fresh new account and still have access to the Chinese account. What's going on here? [more inside]

Completionist internet projects
What are your favorite blogs or social media accounts based on documenting the process of doing everything on a list? For example, cooking every recipe in a cookbook, Julie and Julia-style, or traveling to the highest point in every US state, or reading every Shakespeare play, or...
For extra credit, I'm especially interested in examples where the creator did successfully complete their project! [more inside]
Which social media platforms do conservatives/the far-right use most?
I found this article which listed thirty places where conservatives seem to gather and am assuming by the way the list is ordered that gab.com is where most of the right congregates but wanted to see if anyone knew otherwise (Truth Social? Parler still? Twitter?).
Late Adopter Contemplates Image Sharing: should I sign up for Imgur?
I am not interested, mostly, in sharing images of my life, apart from texting family and using a private Instagram. However, in a recent free thread I had the urge to share images of my recent pottery, and am thinking of signing up for Imgur specifically to share the occasional image here on Metafilter Dot Com.
What is Imgur's reputation? If I post things there can other people use them? Do people regret using it? What are best practices when using it? [more inside]
A Free Personal Relationship Manager
So there's a commercial social app out there that claims to help you manage your personal relationships using AI. The marketing is compelling. What I am looking for is even simpler, and potentially free: I want a methodology or app or something that will gently nudge me to reach out to friends I haven't talked to for, say, six months or so. In a sense, it would be the social equivalent of the spaced repetition algorithm employed by flashcard apps. [more inside]

Chinese social media sounds: Wheezing laugh, derpy puzzlement. Why?
I hear these sounds on Chinese social media a lot. I don’t hear them anywhere else. What more can you tell me about them? When did they start to appear and why? Are they regional or generational? Coastal cities, the capital, certain provinces, Gen Z, Boomers, influencers, who is likely to favor them? Do other countries have similar favored sounds?

What does a Mastodon user I blocked see when I use a tag they clicked?

TikTok suggestions for a teen who is flirting with toxic ideology?
My 13yo has become obsessed with a TikTok personality who espouses a lot of toxic ideas. I feel comfortable having conversations with him about misogyny and more generally why this guy is a scam artist, but I would also like to direct him to some entertaining TikTokers who aren’t pushing a lot of toxic masculinity. Interesting topics could include logicical fallacies and how they work, US History [more inside]
Social Media trends for the too-busy Social Media Manager
I am my organization's entire Marketing and Social Media department. As a result I do not, for example, have the time to scroll through TikTok for the latest trending sounds to pair with my content. I am looking for resources (blogs, newsletters, other social media accounts) to help me stay current on trends, algorithm changes, strategy, etc. [more inside]
Who's left and who's leaving - twitter and afterward
Are you on twitter? What decisions have you made about your non-twitter social media? I am especially interested in replies from people who are Really On Twitter so it's not just a matter of spending a bit more time on Instagram instead. [more inside]
Archive/save all of someone else's tweets
With the potential demise of Twitter, I'm wondering what's gonna happen to the amazing accounts I've found over the years. How can I save the entirety of someone else's tweets, graphics included (retweets not included)? I'm thinking of people with massive archives, like 350k+ tweets. How could I save it in a way that would be easy to read, search, and maintain as a forever archive? I'm a luddite in these things.
Mastodon servers like Metafilter
I’m moving on from Twitter for obvious reasons, and am looking for a Mastodon server to occasionally toot from about civic tech, gardens, and dogs. With this whole federated situation, I’m looking for a server that has a strong focus on community safety and a sustainable model for operation. [more inside]

Stories about proliferation of "Internet News"
I'm seeing more and more "news" stories that are about the Internet. Not in-depth interesting stories but lazy things that are essentially copy pastes from r/AITA or descriptions of TikTok posts with no research into whether they are even true, who is involved, etc. They used to have headlines implying action where there was none, describing statements as "blasts" for instance, but now they pretend that the aggregate of internet opinions are some kind of polling data, beginning with "internet sides with____". Where can I find an article about these articles, like an article I read about the rise of the chumbox?

Satire moderated as misinformation - solutions?
A colleague recently started a new satirical website akin to The Onion. Time and again they have attempted to utilize Facebook, Google and Twitter to advertise and share articles, but moderators consistently flag content for policy violations, even though all content is satire and labeled as such on the website. Because the client is not allowed to monetize or advertise with major tech companies there is little web traffic and almost zero revenue. [more inside]
Finding out which of my Instagram followers have the most followers?
I'm trying to start an influencer marketing campaign for a fundraiser, and I want to identify my most-followed followers. When I search for a platform or plugin that can do this, I'm... barraged by SEO garbage that I can't parse. Is there a simple way to do this? I need to sort through 25k followers.

What’s being done about social media algorithms?
Frances Haugen exposed how FaceBook’s engagement algorithms have had horrible outcomes for humanity, ranging from worsening teen girls’ self-esteem to throwing elections. The same happens with YouTube and probably Google. Have there been any serious attempts to legislate or otherwise constrain these algorithms? Is there anything a private citizen can do?
How to become a better texter?

Facebook imposter imposter?
Since May 20th, I've gotten 5 messages from Facebook (purportedly) that make me worry that someone might be trying to get my account taken down. But people accidentally use my email address to sign up for things all the time, so it could be innocuous. Is there any way I can tell what's up without attempting to deal with the clusterduck that is Facebook support? And either way, what should I do? [more inside]
