Abstract

934,142. Disc brakes. L. TAYLOR. Sept. 2, 1959 [Sept. 5, 1958], No. 28502/58. Class 103 (1). A disc brake comprises an axially mounted annular brake disc and a fixed housing extending on opposite sides of the disc wherein a movable member is urged into frictional contact with the brake disc by resilient means and moved away from the brake disc by fluidoperated means. In the embodiment disclosed in Fig. 1 a clutch-type disc brake is shown wherein an axially movable disc 18a, provided with friction lining 18b riveted thereto, is rotatable with the member 16 to be braked, and is adapted to be braked by means of a non-rotatable axially slidable annular presser plate 13a which is urged towards the disc 18a by spring means 14 to bring the brake disc into frictional contact with fixed annular member 12a which is joined to fixed annular portion 12b to bridge the brake disc assembly 11. The brake is released by pneumatic pressure applied to a plurality of spaced piston and cylinder arrangements 23. Spaces 21 are provided in the bridge member to permit ventilation of the brake. A valve (not shown) may be provided in the air exhaust pipe to control the speed of brake release. In an alternative embodiment disclosed in Figs. 4 and 4a, a fixed caliper member 41 surrounds a minor portion of the axially slidable brake disc 11 and carries an axially slidable pressure plate 42 provided with friction pads 44 and integral with a fluid pressure piston 46 which acts in a cylinder 47 to release the brake when pressurized. The brake is applied by means of resilient members in the form of four coil springs 52 to move pressure plate 42 and disc 11b into frictional contact with friction pad 43 secured to fixed limb 41b of caliper member 41. Outward movement of the piston 46 is limited by an adjustable stop 48.
