Abstract
806,919. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 12, 1956 [Sept. 15, 1955], No. 26461/55. Class 103 (1). In a spot-type disc brake in which one friction pad 35 is fixedly secured to one side wall of a calliper shaped housing 24; the other side wall carrying operating means to urge the second pad 36 towards the first, the housing 24 is formed as two rigidly connected portions each forming one side of the calliper, the portion 28 carrying the operating means being formed of light metal and the other portion 29 being formed of cast iron or steel. The operating means comprises a piston and cylinder mechanism 41, 42 which when pressurized forces pad 36 against brake disc 10; the reaction forcing the housing 24 to move about pivotal connection 22, 23 to urge pad 35 against the opposite face of the disc. Spring release mechanisms (not shown) effect the release of the friction pads when the brake operating means is released. Automatic brake adjusting mechanism is provided for limiting the clearance between the pads 35, 36 and the disc 10. The mechanism takes the form of a buttress-threaded stem 53 fixed to the outer end of the cylinder 41 and projecting into the interior of the piston 42. Associated with the piston 42 is a slotted sleeve having a plurality of resilient arms 55 which co-operate with the thread 54 on stem 53, the free ends of the arm 55 are so shaped that they ride freely over the thread 54 as the piston moves inwardly, but engage in the thread to limit movement in the opposite direction to a maximum which depends upon the pitch of the thread 54 and the angular spacing of the arm 55.
