Abstract

880,870. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. March 14, 1958 [April 1, 1957], No. 10510/57. Class 103 (1). In a spot type disc brake, pads of friction material are each connected to its associated fluid pressure piston by a tongue and groove or like slidable connection such that the pads may be disconnected from the pistons in a direction parallel to the plane of the disc through an aperture in the caliper housing of the brake for replacement purposes. In the embodiment illustrated, the pads of friction materials 17, 18 are bonded to backing plates 7 provided with a pair of tongues 12 which are adapted to slide into complementary grooves 13 provided in each piston 9. The pads are guided for movement in a direction parallel to the axis of the disc by the caliper housing 14 and are retained in place by radially-outer pad-stops 19, 20 detachably secured to the caliper housing and in the radially inner direction by a portion 16 at the inner periphery of the caliper housing. Other embodiments are described and illustrated in the Specification (e.g. as shown in Fig. 6) in which other sliding connections between the friction pads and the pistons are disclosed and the caliper housing may be manufactured so that the pads are slidable radially inwardly for disengagement or in a direction tangential to the disc. The backing plate may be provided with apertures to reduce the heat transfer from the pad to the piston and cylinder mechanism. Specifications 850,649 and 861,091 are referred to.
