Abstract

812,988. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. July 3, 1957 [July 24, 1956], No. 22798/56. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] In a disc brake comprising an axially slidable rotatable disc 1, non-rotatable pads of friction material 9, 18 on opposite sides of the disc to frictionally engage the disc, an annular stepped piston 13, having a smaller diameter portion 14 and a larger diameter portion 15, is provided to be slidable on suitable portions of a non- rotatable torque plate 5 to force the friction pads and disc together in frictional engagement when fluid pressure is connected to the annular chamber 19 between the steps in the torque plate and the piston. Sealing rings 20 are located against each of the stepped portions to render the chamber fluid tight and spring means may be located between sealing rings and adapted to force the sealing rings axially apart. Fig. 3 shows one of three alternative embodiments showing different sealing ring arrangements. It is stated that among the advantages offered by this arrangement, the piston cannot seize in the cylinder when it expands under the influence of heat generated on braking.
