この症状はAPD(Auditory processing disorder: 聴覚情報処理障害)として知られている。APDは耳が聞こえないのではなく、聞きづらいのである。つまり、耳から入ってくる情報に対して極端に弱く、理解しづらいのである。
このように、APDは会話でのコミュニケーションにおいて困難が生じる症状であるため、会話コミュニケーションの比重が小さい学校では発覚しづらく、社会人になってからその困難に気づく人が多数である。
症状には人によってばらつきがあり、例えば、増田の場合、周りで雑音や雑談が聞こえると集中できなくなり、理解が進みにくくなり、同じことを2〜3度繰り返して聞いてしまう傾向にある。
