1936-37

• Tragedy struck the Montreal Canadiens in March. In January, Howie Morenz suffered a badly fractured leg when his left skate got caught in the dasher boards following as he was being checked by Earl Seibert of the Chicago Black Hawks. Two months later, X-rays revealed Morenz had blood clots in his healing leg. The night before a scheduled operation to take care of the problem, a clot stopped his heart, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Morenz was dead.

• With his team hopelessly out of playoff contention, owner Frederic McLaughlin experimented by fielding a team of all American-born players. McLaughlin had always dreamed of having an all-American team compete at the NHL level.

• The Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup, beating the New York Rangers, three games to two.
