• The NHL mandates that dark uniforms be worn by the home team, and white uniforms be worn by the visiting team. This arrangement would be reversed in 1970, eventually changed back in 2003.

• Following several complaints that their uniforms were confusing to both players and fans, the NHL changed the uniforms worn by referees and linesmen to black and white vertical stripes.

• The Montreal Canadiens ended the Detroit Red Wings' seven-year reign at the top of the NHL standings. The Canadiens then ended the Red Wings' reign as Stanley Cup champions, beating them in five games to win the first of their unprecedented five consecutive Stanley Cups.
