Any states that require licensing of non-therapist social workers?
Are there any states in which all social workers are required to be licensed, not just therapist social workers? In California, most social workers do not have to be licensed because they are not trained as therapists, and they have no master's degrees. This creates tremendous potential for abuse of power by unlicensed social workers, with no oversight, unlike doctors, lawyers, nurses, and other persons who have power over poor, disabled and elderly persons. If something goes wrong in those and other licensed professions, the family has recourse to discipline by the state authority.
I'm looking for a state that has full licensing for social workers so that I can get help to advocate for such a system in California, where I have been shocked by the abuses of unlicensed social workers for the last 15 years. [more inside]

Social housing or government financial aid?
I've seen a lot of critique towards deprioritisation of social housing. But why isn't the problem of affordable housing solved with government financial aid for individuals, allowing them more freedom and flexibility? Is it a bad strategy, from a leftist standpoint? Seems like building and maintaining social housing might be harder and more expensive for governments than to just give financial aid to those who can't afford appropriate housing? [more inside]

How much am I worth to a social media platform?
Let's say I scroll on social media for 1 hour (yes, only one hour, that's accurate, it's certainly never longer than that. ahem). Assuming I just keep scrolling, without clicking any ads, or making any purchases - how much money did the platform make from my attention? [more inside]

Maintaining composure in face of an extremely beautiful person.
I lose my voice when anxious but just had an experience of losing it when overtaken by awe. Quick summary: I went to a singing recital of a graduating student because they were singing songs celebrating my ethnicity (in language my grandmother spoke). The performance was amazing and very meaningful to me (lots of crying). It was a small recital room and I did briefly notice the singer was attractive, but didn't obsess about it. Then... Scar story
I underwent Mohs surgery 6 weeks ago, resulting in a large noticeable scar on my forehead. With an upcoming job interview, I'm seeking advice on how to handle broaching the subject without revealing too much personal information or causing discomfort. Do i just not mention it and leave it out there? Or do I proactively say something? What might I say?
At 61, I'm also wary of potential bias, since this sort of health issue is common among oldsters like myself.
Any tips on addressing the scar professionally while keeping the focus on my qualifications would be greatly appreciated.

Should I join social media to help establish real world friendships?
My real-life social network has taken a beating lately, what with Covid and 2 cross country moves in the last 4 years. I'm in a new city where I know no one (except my husband), and I'm having a lot of trouble making connections. I have a few friends from my prior city that I keep in touch with over text/zoom, but I'm really missing in-person friends and connections. [more inside]
Please help me find ways to stop thinking and talking about politics
I am from the USA and vote Democratic. I would describe myself as center-left. I do a lot of international travel and spend very little time in the US. I am interested in world history and current events. Sadly, this is inhibiting my personal growth and interfering with my social life. [more inside]
What are position papers and reflective essays in scholarly journals?
Hello all, I am working on an academic opinion/essay kind of topic in the social sciences and I stumbled upon a social science Canadian scholarly journal, and I am wondering what exactly is a reflective essay and a position paper in scholarly journals. They are not exactly empirical/deep theoretical papers, but I'm quite unsure. [more inside]
Is it now considered weird for a male to be in public without a shirt?

X mutual who likes EVERYTHING
I know how petty this sounds, but really, I bet there are some of us on X/Twitter who feel this way: This nice guy is a mutual (we follow each other), but he lurks all day and gives me a Like -- many times the only one -- on almost everything I post. I'm sick of it. Reasons. The only thing to do would be to block him ... but this is a last grasp for any other strange option you know of. Muting doesn't prevent you seeing their Like in Notifications, and that's the cringe.

Social norms for person monopolizing a conversation in a group?
I always find it off-putting when I'm talking to someone and one of their acquaintances or friends joins in and starts talking to them, making no effort to include me (and, sometimes, someone they may be with) in the conversation. Simply put, am I being too sensitive or this pretty universally considered rude?

Article on TikTok potentially influencing US, comparing with Shein?
Last year, perhaps, I read an article highlighting the potential, latent risks of TikTok by asking, essentially, what is stopping the Chinese government from using the platform to quietly spread misinformation or influence opinion en masse? It described using AI (this was pre-ChatGPT) to pinpoint susceptible pressure points in the population (forming arguments that people would be more likely to buy, and quickly), and cited and compared fast-fashion company Shein as part of the discussion.
Anyone know the piece?
How well-founded or useful are neurodivergent categories?

In your opinion is shyness (not introversion) genetic?

Is the 'freedom of speech' rhetoric now just reserved for actual speech?
I, a simpleton and slave to social media forums and dialogues such as this, have become curious how in such a short period of time the common knowledge that we had the freedom to speak in our own voice about our own opinions as long as it didn't interfere with anyone elses freedoms or alter the truth of the moment. This is my own understanding of that concept, but if I'm not mistaken it is a Constitutionally protected human right. Now, in the year 2023, I'm being mocked by the very construct of "social media" that dares to invite society in to share the social aspect, but then arbitrarily ban or 'jail' those whose ideals once spoken irritate another user of same. i can elaborate: [more inside]

Like if Leslie Knope and Carrie Bradshaw had a baby, I guess?
I find that I really enjoy reading online content: articles, tweets, what-have-yous, by whip-smart witty women with their finger on the pulse of current events. Without any purposeful planning, I have naturally curated my podcast, social media and newsletter feeds to be dominated folks identifying as females such as Heather Cox Richardson, Emily Nussbaum, Anne Helen Peterson, Roxane Gay, and Sarah Marshall, among others. Oh, and Jessamyn, natch! I want to find more like this! Who else should I follow, subscribe to, or stan?

How do you deal with the donut hole (especially if self-employed)?
I'm married with two kids. Both my partner and I are somewhat disabled in ways that are hard to prove, but we both work part-time. We were very low income for a long time and lucky to receive various social services that made that workable enough. Now, though (thanks in part to previous assistance on ask.metafilter) I have more employable skills and a much better part-time job, and this year for the first time I'm worried about making too much money. New social security card after status change

How to be less of a hangry, tired toddler
I get cranky and disagreeable when I am hungry or tired, it seems (to me) more so than most people. I’ve been working on this by being more attentive to when I’m starting to feel it coming on, and having a quick solution on hand (having a snack or excusing myself to close my eyes in a quiet room, for instance). But sometimes it’s just not possible or practical to do anything about it immediately - is there some way I can “train” myself to function better when I’m feeling this way?
