Where in LA is that one location that appears in every single LA movie?

You know the one I mean: high up in an overlook on a hill, looking down from it you can see all the city lights. It's paved, there's parking for two or three cars maybe, and there's a bench. [more inside]

Where to stay in LA with Kids

As part of a road trip with a 11 and 13 year old, we will be in LA from July 8-11. We will be flying into LAX. What part of town should we stay in? My first thought was Santa Monica but I keep hearing that Venice and surrounding areas aren't a good choice anymore. I'll leave it at that but would love to hear from people who are in the area. Other LA contacts have recommended Manhattan Beach, Silver Lake, or Culver City as good options. [more inside]

Advice for Moving on a Shoestring Budget? (Possible: FL, NY)

Goodbye Portland, Hello LA.......for Now

My sister wants to try living in LA for a year to pursue her very niche career in music supervision. However she loves Portland, where she's lived the last 10+ years, and doesn't want to lose her cute 1B apartment here in PDX if it doesn't work out. A thought she had was finding a housing swap type situation. Are there resources for this that aren't easily found by googling? Barring her finding an ideal housingswap, are there artists lofts (her partner is a bonafide artist) or other affordableish/out-of-the-box living situations she might consider? Things to do in LA with a 6 year old movie buff?

So we're taking 6.5 year old Schwingg! Jr. to LA next week and looking for movie industry things to do! He's very interested in the history of movie production, silent movies, and black & white comedies. Pretty much uninterested in going to Disney. To give you an idea, here are the stars he wants to see on the Walk of Fame: Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Erol Flynn, Oliver Hardy, Stan Laurel, Groucho Marx, and Donald Trump. I understand that most of the movie set tours don't allow kids under 8, so that puts us in a bind. Ideas for movie activities (and any other non-Disney activities?)

Off-beat, off-key, incredible, inspiring

I love this cover of Route 66 by Yo La Tengo. A child named Lila sings while Yo La Tengo backs her up on Yo La Tengo is Murdering the Classics. I saw a superhero band in LA at the Mar Vista Farmer's Market a few years ago, where a number of parents and their children dressed up as superheroes and made music and sang songs. I am looking for other things with this aesthetic. If you could direct me to the superhero band that would be great. Thanks!

Vacation scope creep - embrace or avoid?

I am in the planning stages of a summer vacation, and am stressing about scope creep. We are flying from the east to the Big Island of Hawaii. Direct flights aren’t an option, and most flights have layovers, generally in California. It got me thinking…and then over thinking. Should we stop in ie. San Francisio on the way there for a couple of days, and maybe L.A. for a couple of ways on the way back? I have not been to either city. Or is that silly, and we should just extend our stay in Hawaii from a week to say 10-12 days ? [more inside]

LA plants on the cheap

I am trying to beautify an ugly concrete slab at the front of my East LA house - I'm thinking potted plants. Where/how can I do this on the cheap? I'm hoping for drought-tolerant plants and also big pots that don't break the bank. Do you have any specific stores or general ideas for cheap pots and outdoor cute plants? the winter gets less full sun but the summer is full sun, and I am not the BEST waterer, so these are the battles the winning plants will have to wage.
