Where to stay in LA with Kids

As part of a road trip with a 11 and 13 year old, we will be in LA from July 8-11. We will be flying into LAX. What part of town should we stay in? My first thought was Santa Monica but I keep hearing that Venice and surrounding areas aren't a good choice anymore. I'll leave it at that but would love to hear from people who are in the area. Other LA contacts have recommended Manhattan Beach, Silver Lake, or Culver City as good options. [more inside]

Things to do in LA with a 6 year old movie buff?

So we're taking 6.5 year old Schwingg! Jr. to LA next week and looking for movie industry things to do! He's very interested in the history of movie production, silent movies, and black & white comedies. Pretty much uninterested in going to Disney. To give you an idea, here are the stars he wants to see on the Walk of Fame: Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Erol Flynn, Oliver Hardy, Stan Laurel, Groucho Marx, and Donald Trump. I understand that most of the movie set tours don't allow kids under 8, so that puts us in a bind. Ideas for movie activities (and any other non-Disney activities?)

Vacation scope creep - embrace or avoid?

I am in the planning stages of a summer vacation, and am stressing about scope creep. We are flying from the east to the Big Island of Hawaii. Direct flights aren’t an option, and most flights have layovers, generally in California. It got me thinking…and then over thinking. Should we stop in ie. San Francisio on the way there for a couple of days, and maybe L.A. for a couple of ways on the way back? I have not been to either city. Or is that silly, and we should just extend our stay in Hawaii from a week to say 10-12 days ? [more inside]

Thoughts on an LA weekend?

My wife and I will be staying Friday night through Monday morning just within walking distance to Universal Studios LA next month. We hope to see a dear cousin and former editor of mine but he may be in San Diego for Comic Con. Our primary objective is Harry Potter first thing on Saturday. We've done a number of LA destinations over the years including the Getty and Norton Simon, Disneyland, the Griffith, even the Museum of Jurassic Technology, I have an interest in baseball and may be able to take in a Dodgers game, depending. We will have wheels. Where might we hie to?

Two days In LA

will be in LA for a week in late July but only 2 days are mine. Alone, staying near the Getty. Where are the most interesting places in Downtown Los Angeles?

I recently moved to Downtown Los Angeles, and am getting a kick out of exploring the neighborhood--it's changed a lot since I last visited in the early 2000s, has amazing architecture, and a fascinating mix of people and different communities. But I'm new to Los Angeles and unfamiliar with the neighborhood... what are the gems of downtown that are worth checking out?

What to do with a few weekdays in Los Angeles?

We'll be in L.A. for 2-3 weekdays in mid-March, and while one of our evenings is scheduled, we have no idea what to do with the rest of our time. We'll be staying in or near Hollywood, and won't have a car, but don't mind taking transit. We're especially looking for suggestions for one really very nice, splurge-y place for dinner, as well as great inexpensive places to eat. Also interested in: coffee-snob coffee; fancy cocktails; craft beer; fun/interesting/unique places to shop; anything else that seems interesting. We also really like live shows (comedy/improv/podcast/music), but most of the L.A. shows we know about are on the weekend. And I'm planning to go to Jenette Bras for a fitting, but I'd love suggestions for any other bra shops that carry sizes in the G+ range.

I reply to a fair number of L.A. travel questions here and many of the answers (including mine) often contain dire warnings about traffic. From L.A. to Santa Fe and back. By Car, necessarily. Next month. I'm planning a 1.5 day drive, a 3 day stay in Santa Fe (already taken care of, thanks), a 1.5 day drive back to L.A. Where should I sleep en route? I'm thinking Flagstaff, right? Sightseeing in or around Flagstaff? (touristy stuff is OK unless it's something horribily overcrowded or plainly for kids). Is the drive too long/boring? Any better ideas to make the trip more fun? Suggestions? Thanks.
